I love driving past gas stations in a car that runs on sunshine

Armaced | 2026-03-10 19:31 | 229 views

My wife has had a Model 3 as her commuter car for a couple years, and we’ve had insufficient solar panels for a while. She’s at work during the day and we charge her car at night when the electricity is off-peak. This last winter I picked up a used Model X and we expanded our solar array and added a power wall. I set up the Model X to also charge at off-peak hours. I charge it off of a standard 110 outlet, which is sufficient for my errands (I work from home and drive across town in the afternoon to check up on my dad). I noticed something that should have been obvious: my solar panels sometimes feed the grid. They will do this when the powerwall is full or when the panels are producing more excess energy then the powerwall can absorb at once. PG&E will charge me 36¢ - 40¢ per kWh to pull electricity, but only pays me a tiny fraction of that when I push electricity back to them, so I really don’t like pushing electricity to the grid. There isn’t anything I can do about my wife’s car, but I changed mine to start charging at 9 AM. My panels are producing enough juice to charge my car (slowly at 1kW) and still top of my powerwall. That means my car is running almost purely on sunshine - just by changing the time of day that I charge. That energy would have otherwise been practically given away to PG&E and sold back to me at an exploitative rate later that night.

Hey everyone look - this guy owns a roof in the “Bay AreA”!

Armaced 2026-03-10 20:00

Not quite - Closer to Stockton. I’m lucky to have it.

acethinjo 2026-03-10 20:01

Don't be so mean.. that's my job..

Letmeaddtothis 2026-03-10 20:07

Darn, good luck, AC season is coming in a couple of days. You need all the Sun juice you can gather. My cousin’s summer bills were like $900/month in Vacaville. He just got a new heat pump, can’t get solar because of the “architecture” roof or something.

Annual_Grass538 2026-03-10 20:07

We are basically charging for free for most of the year for the next 9 years until the laws on solar change or whatever. We only pay for electricity during the winter when it gets rainy/foggy.

Worth-Reputation3450 2026-03-10 20:19

Don't brag too much. Government will want to start charging for the Sun usage. California is quite good at squeezing out every dime from their citizens.

Armaced 2026-03-10 20:21

Oof. Yeah, AC is going to put a crimp in my plans. I did get a heat pump a couple years back, and I try and go easy on the AC.

Armaced 2026-03-10 20:22

Good advice! Yeah, the day when they start taxing sunlight will be a dark day indeed. Literally.

Armaced 2026-03-10 20:30

What kind of laws are you anticipating around Solar? You have unlocked a new fear in me...

Massive-Painting-802 2026-03-10 20:30

Did anyone else notice the Name 🤣🤣🤣

SocraticBruin 2026-03-10 20:32

💀💀

Armaced 2026-03-10 20:39

Yeah - we loved watching [Lexx](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexx) back in the day. It turns out Canadians and Germans working together can make the strangest Sci-Fi. Sometimes it is terrible, and sometimes it is brilliant. I love the pope from New Jersey walking across Vietnam, and the space shuttle with the brake pedal.

Annual_Grass538 2026-03-10 20:50

NEM 3.0; it’s coming for everyone unless the laws change.

RWL7 2026-03-10 20:57

Interesting car name.

Big-Dingo-8625 2026-03-10 20:57

Xev is a pornstar…

SocraticBruin 2026-03-10 20:58

Bruh lol 😂

Armaced 2026-03-10 21:01

Oh, yeah. I’m already on that. I was switched over when I expanded the array. The powerwall (and day-charging my car) help prevent me from feeding the grid at the drastically reduced rate, then being charged astronomical rates when I need a little power at night. https://preview.redd.it/2uxxrxk18aog1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73f7ef8978129db039a158740a96599a719112fa

Annual_Grass538 2026-03-10 21:13

Glad you’ve found a way around it. We have 9 years left until we have to change over. I thought about naming my Tesla 790 but husband never got into the show.

Armaced 2026-03-10 21:16

I love it! I wanted to go as Stanley Tweedle for Halloween, but it turns out orange jumpsuits aren’t cheap.

CR8VJUC 2026-03-10 21:33

Feels good, man. Solar on the roof, Tesla charger in the garage, haven’t paid for gas since 2021. ![gif](giphy|glvyCVWYJ21fq|downsized)

ZucchiniMaleficent21 2026-03-10 21:35

Apparently you just need to get convicted of something and you’ll get one for free! Win!

ZucchiniMaleficent21 2026-03-10 21:37

Even in the Great White North we get to drive for free and cut the electricity bills by 40%.Solar panels are seriously cool

Nulight 2026-03-10 21:52

They already just passed something regarding NEM3.0 solidification recently.

BlankStarBE 2026-03-10 22:05

And how long will it take for the ROI? How much did you pay for the powerwall and extra solar panels? And how much electricity did you use at night to charge the X? I’m from Belgium and here it would take 7-8 years for a powerwall which is ridiculous

TsunamiBob 2026-03-10 22:11

They might build some kind of sunblocker... Have you ever seen the sun set at 3 PM?

Armaced 2026-03-10 22:22

I am leasing the power wall and solar panels. I pay a monthly bill for their usage, but with the price of power in California it makes it way more affordable.

[Huh...](https://i.imgur.com/adXXeB6.jpeg) Yeah, no. Xev Bellringer is a pornstar.

Armaced 2026-03-10 23:02

That’s funny, but she was a [science fiction character](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zev_Bellringer) first.

SE_MI_CT 2026-03-10 23:22

Well, just be aware that whenever you take that bad boy in for service, you know those guys are looking at you like "who the hell is this gooner..."

Quin1617 2026-03-10 23:52

Is she really popular enough where the average joe would recognize her name? I’ve never heard of her, or even the show that she got the name from.

hmspain 2026-03-10 23:53

Just wait, it gets better!

Armaced 2026-03-11 00:01

I watched the show maybe twenty years ago. It’s weird. It’s terrible. It’s wonderful. You’ll either love it or hate it - probably both.

ponyloverr 2026-03-11 00:06

Hopefully an upgrade to the 110v is in order

SE_MI_CT 2026-03-11 00:07

>Is she really popular enough where the average joe would recognize her name? Not that I'm some pornstar guru, but she's up there. Probably a top 20 name of the past 10 years. 6 years ago an electronic billboard near me was hacked and they put a Xev video up on it.

Armaced 2026-03-11 00:37

I have an L2 wall charger for my wife’s car that I can use if I want to, but the slow charge of the 110 gets the job done without exceeding the output of the solar panels.

mrandr01d 2026-03-11 05:00

Oh, so it IS what I thought that was...

mrandr01d 2026-03-11 05:01

What's that?

mrandr01d 2026-03-11 05:06

Leasing from who? Who owns them?

orTodd 2026-03-11 05:15

With the Tesla wall connector, you can charge the Teslas on solar automatically. It talks to the panels and the battery to take whatever is leftover from solar production. If the AC turns on,for example, it cuts the car until it’s done so you don’t accidentally draw from the grid.

Armaced 2026-03-11 05:41

Sunrun

Armaced 2026-03-11 05:44

I see that for my wife’s car - a “Charge on Solar” section in the app. However, I don’t see that option for my car. I suspect I don’t have it because my car is so much older (2018).

yankees3k2 2026-03-11 11:54

Nem 3.0?

Armaced 2026-03-11 13:21

Yes.

yankees3k2 2026-03-11 13:23

Btw Tesla has a mode called charge on solar.  You can try that to capture all extra solar instead of selling to the grid.   Sorry about new 3.0, the California commission is corrupt.

Armaced 2026-03-11 13:27

I actually don’t see “Charge on Solar” for my 2018 car, but I do see it for my wife’s 2023. Perhaps it’s only on the newer models?

pipinngreppin 2026-03-11 20:48

That name certainly rings a bell.

pipinngreppin 2026-03-11 20:49

I don’t have solar, but I do charge at home. I haven’t thought much about the savings, but the time saved by never going to a gas station to or from work is priceless.

Armaced 2026-03-11 21:34

Seriously. It’s the biggest advantage of an electric vehicle. Going to a gas station now (for a rental or my son’s car) feels akin to going to the laundry mat after having owned a washer/dryer. Before getting my solar act together I’m not sure I was actually saving any money. * My electricity rates are sky-high thanks to PG&E * My insurance went way up for each Tesla * My registration went way up for each Tesla Yeah, I save on oil changes, smogging, and other maintenance, but it wasn’t a slam dunk. Still, I freaking love owning EVs just for the convenience of having my own private fueling station in my garage. Everything else (and there is a lot) is just gravy.

Glum_Perception_1077 2026-03-12 14:26

Being that you wfh, why not just charge a couple days a week or maybe once your wife's charges from her week long commute, you charge.

Armaced 2026-03-12 14:41

I certainly have been thinking about that - swapping cars and alternating charging of solar. The only problem is that I use the Model X to take care of my dad, and he can’t get in and out of the Model 3 - it’s too low. Still, there are days where he just needs me to get something for him and I could be driving the Model 3 those days.

Glum_Perception_1077 2026-03-12 14:52

If you don't drive far in the X, you should have enough battery to last you. I drive my Model 3 at least 4 or 5 days a week for work and some days I can get up to 300 miles round trip on my long weeks. So if its a long week I'll only be able to drive it 4 days because the fifth day it's too low (i charge 12a at home). So yes you can swap out the days he doesn't ride with you and still be able to kinda alternate or leave maybe 1 or 2 days where you both charge versus 7.
