The employees at the dealership were quite interested in seeing it and comparing it to a new spec sheet. They were amazed that the price of the car was $61.5K.
Unexpected?
If you paid that price in 2018, then you definitely got ripped off EDIT: I stand corrected. Had no idea that they actually cost this much back then. My apologies.
It’s dead. RIP
Cool find. I’m fairly new to Tesla, whats the difference between EAP and the regular autopilot?
https://preview.redd.it/i4ugpgk16xng1.png?width=1879&format=png&auto=webp&s=e74eda0c1e1b76535eba164a0c0ccf2e8c219404 A hit a car backing out of their driveway and swiped the whole side of my car. I didn't think the damage was that bad but the insurance came back with a \~$18K claim and declared the car a total loss. I was pretty stunned. I was planning on replacing the battery in two years to keep the car going. Edit: added photo. It really didn't seem that bad -- the damage did run down the entire length of the passenger side and scratched up the rims too. I can't believe this was $18K of damage.
That's quite a lot more than I paid for MYP in 2025. Crazy
Not ripped off, that’s just how much they were in 2018. The 18’ Model S P100D was a $135,000 car
Tesla. Defying inflation lol Sorry for your loss!
The was the ‘cost’ for having the coolest car on the block for sure. I remember people rolling down their windows at stop lights asking tons of questions about ours… and the conversations in parking lots etc. It was good to be part of that early growth making Tesla what it is today IMO.
Why? This is what the car cost in 2018. I have the same car, black with white interior, premium wheels and enhanced autopilot. Keep in mind also that buying in 2018 meant a $7500 federal credit plus in my case at least, $2000 state credit as well.
Enhanced includes some features of autopilot but was half the cost. It was only offered a few years and is no longer an option when buying.

Awesome - thanks for the response!!
Yep I paid the same in June 2018. After 124k miles have the battery at 261 miles at full charge. Wonder what the battery replacement costs.
same here -2018 M3 LR just like this. I think we also got a credit from PG&E..
If the damage is only cosmetic, you might think about talking to your agent and just cancelling the claim so the car doesn't get totalled out. You can paint it yourself or have a body shop / paint shop do it and keep driving it for the great car it still is.
Someone will buy that car and drive it as is How many miles did the car have?
yep mine was $85K ish for performance. With FSD it was close to $90K
51K ... I was planning on replacing the battery in two years and just keeping it going.
bye bye bye
Sorry to hear that. Last month my Model Y was totaled from being rear ended on the highway. Only had it for a year and planned on keeping it forever
Wtf? Why? That battery was barely used.
Main battery? Why?
Can you keep it for free lol that damage doesn’t do anything to the battery
That’s a cool sticker. Do you mind sharing what state you’re in? I will keep my eye out at the salvage auction. I wouldn’t mind buying this car if I see it pop up.
Woah! Mine is a 2019 and I have 111K miles on it!
Oh man. I should have asked for my window sticker. I never had one on the car at pickup when I got mine last month.
Ikr I saw this and thought wtf why would anyone pay that much. My 2024Y was 44990 and I got the 7500 credit. Feels like we did okay haha
what the hell I'd take whatever insurance is offering and just keep driving this
Lmfao not at all. That car at that price in 2018 was worth it. Do your research bud
Not for free, insurance would have a value on it if they wanted to buy it back.
That's why I traded mine for a Truck. Sad but true!
Also a 10/2018 Model 3 Midnight Blue With EAP and then folloing year FSD Thanks for the reminder on the cost - gulp.
61k!
Agreed
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Omg well I recently totaled my model 3 and I just purchased another used one. But I would’ve never guessed this is 18k in damage. Mine was supposedly being fixed for a week before Geico told me it’s totaled. I got lucky to get a good actual cash value offer from them. Was expecting to get robbed and was ready to dispute but wasn’t necessary. Wishing you the best sorry this happened. If it helps I got a much better deal on my second model 3 on the APR and price of the car. Made me feel like everything happens for a reason.
Enhanced autopilot over FSD? What?
Why would you "plan" on replacing the battery? You can't really upgrade it... and that's not something you would plan on replacing in "2 years"... If it fails you gotta replace it immediately.
Why would you replace the battery? My 2018 M3 with 76K miles has lost 16% range, down to 260, more loss than most people but I wouldn't consider replacing the battery.
If you want to keep driving, as is or not fully repaired it that's very possible. Generally if you ask to buy it back they are pretty on board it's a lot cheaper for them than having it go to a copart auction. There are some states where you would even be able to avoid a salvge title brand. You would probably end up with a deal like they pay you 10 grand and you keep the car. I would also probably try to courter a 18k offer on that generally insurance company we will not fight to hard if you contest the valuation and push for ~20% more if you have a decent example or two. If you have included software like FSD or auto steer that should also work into the value though insurance generally will not work it in by default.
Wait a minute. 2018s didn’t have black trim. I had a 2019 and it still had chrome trim.
Something weird here. Why would the battery need replacing “in two years”?
Wow, that's not a lot a miles either. I've had my car for 13 months and I just hit 51,000 miles myself.
This is the key point that explains why write offs are so common for damage that seems otherwise cheaper to repair than pay out a write off for. The insurance company doesn’t just look at the repair costs, they look at the repair costs minus what they can get for the car if they sell it.
Paid the same and was upset that a year later, the performance version was the same price. 135k and 235 full charge. Massive degradation of the battery.
My 2018 M3P was $72,000! (Before $7000 credit) My 2026 MYP was $56,900!
That was the good old days. Same experience for me. You felt like a celebrity driving it 😂
I paid the same for my 23 after adding everything to it and making it white on white.
I got a $4k state credit. Thank you Illinois.
Lmao. OVERPAID. 😂😂😂
That is completely unnecessary.
It's just a wrap.
I'm keeping my late 2018 M3P (low mileage and in excellent condition) for as long as possible. I spent the extra $2K to get FSD and the HW3 upgrade quite a while back. It is still a great car to drive.
That’s crazy. It definitely doesn’t look like $18k in damages. Body shops are charging up the wazoo lately for a few hours of touch up. It’s no wonder insurance rates are continuously climbing.
Mine's a 2022 and it has 25,000 miles
HW4 or bust, good riddance.
I found mine today, 79k, going to have the crumpled paper framed by a shop. Only time my dumbass buys a new car, ever.
Maybe same reason why this guys is totaling his perfectly fine low mile vehicle just listening to insurance. Maybe it’s a kinda dead give away :) I would love to have him as one of my client. Imagine all the things you can sell and pull out. Imagine….:)
With free supercharging? Ditto.
Wow I paid less for my 26 model Y performance
You must be young. You don't even want to know what I paid in 2007 for a 46" TV. Or what a 386sx PC with 1MB of RAM cost in 1991.
Hahaha… uhm .. amazing how fast people forget that by 2019 that 2018 car had NEGATIVE depreciation. That’s right, It INCREASED IN VALUE! (due to wait times to order). Also, as others said, there was $7500 tax credit (not applied at purchase time, you received it when you did your taxes), plus state, and local (in my case, $2500 for California and $750 from city + city reimburse for level 2 home charger install).
Wrong! It actually INCREASED in VALUE for a while. It was worth about $65k in 2019 (as a used 2018) due to long wait times to order a new one. Supply and demand.
why would you need to replace the battery in two years if it only has 51K miles? I have about 45K miles on my 2018 M3 LR and battery depletion hasn’t been bad
RIP rainbow tinted rear glass! I still have the OG 18 RWD 3
You’re so wrong. To the original question. EAP offered things that regular autopilot did not. It was basically the step before FSD was. For example before FSD was offered, you had “navigate on autopilot” that allowed the vehicle to change lanes during navigation and take highway exits. It also allowed smart summon, which regular AP did not.
Sorry im not wrong. When I bought my M3, I had the option of buying FSD or Enhanced. FSD offered everything that Enhanced had plus more - for a higher cost. If you bought FSD, you got everything you mentioned. It wouldn't make sense to offer only features in Enhanced for less money and not have them available in the higher FSD package.
Then yes you’re entirely wrong. Your original post states “Has some of the features of autopilot but half the cost”
This right here!🙌😅
i'd buy that at auction in a minute - nice car for the price
You were planning on replacing the battery as proactive maintenance?!
No, I paid for exactly the same price for nearly identical specs of the same car. that’s just the cost for early adopters.
Wow! My ‘24M3LR (Highland - AWD). White on white. Paid cash brand new @ just under $41k with the $7500 EV credit and an additional $1k off for mil discount. https://preview.redd.it/atv8opyqb0og1.jpeg?width=1320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a47525c8171cf0ce1e48f3172f3ecf802b80ef87
Not agreeing with the OP commenter but most of those credits were still available in places up until last year
Insurance takes the car
You can’t keep the car if the insurance writes you a check for the write off amount
> I saw this and thought wtf why would anyone pay that much Same reason why people bought the original Apple Macintosh for $2,500 in 1984 which is over $7k adjusted for inflation, technology advances and comes down in price over time.
What are you even arguing? It has more features than AP but isn’t the full FSD, which is what he said.
My 2021 did as well. All in price was around $56K after taxes, then after all the supply shortages a year later in 2022 I was offered $58K at trade in
That is a pretty wild claim for that type of damage. My 2021 had the whole passenger side rocker panel replaced as well as the front passenger door realigned after an accident and the total cost at a Tesla repair shop was $9K
I don’t recall paying $5k for EAP but I must have since my manufacturer date would be 10-11 months before yours. I also have an S with AP 1.0 so that’s why I had to have it on the 3. It would also explain why FSD upgrade was $2k. Just brought the car in yesterday for the HW 2.5 to 3. Got a loaner 2022 with Ryzen MCU and HW3 to test out.
Dude thank you, you and others like you allowed me to get a cyber truck for about the same price. I hope you love the new one!!
Probably "planning" as in setting the money aside required to fix the battery, more so "expecting" the battery to need replacing within 2 years.
When I bought my 2019 M3SR, people were guessing it was a $60k car and looked surprised when I told them $35k (but really $41k after adding tint, 3rd party wheels, midnight silver paint, destination and autopilot).
That is not what he said. His original message stated that it had half the features of AP. Maybe he meant FSD but that is not what he said. Instead the person doubled down and still believes they are right then moves the goalpost to say it was then FSD in the next reply.
Did they offer free Supercharging at one point? I have a 2017 and one of very early VINs and wasn’t offered free Supercharging.
Not sure if that model had it or not but they stopped the alcantara headliner also for fabric. That was a big deal back then.
Was $18k the estimate to repair or the actual cash value? Insurance companies will total a vehicle when the repair cost > ACV and pay the ACV.
I'm cheap, so I would rather just drive it with the scratches and pocket the cash for the repairs. Put it in a mutual fund and let it grow for my next car.
🤣 I found mine when I going through stuff at my mom's house several years back. No idea how it ended up there. Wasn't even living with her at the time I got my Tesla 🤔
I wanted one so bad back in the day, to watch all the delivery videos and their customer service was amazing. It’s crazy how much their customer service has gone down lol
Still got it? If not how much did lose on it.
I’ve got a 2018 M3LR with 73k. Trading it in for a MYP 2026 to keep my FSD. My car is perfect, hate to get rid of it.
I’m curious how you primarily charge and how often? To further clarify, are you using home slow chargers or fast charging most of the time? And how often. That seems really good and just want to know how I can have that little of loss over a similar time. Thanks!
Stop saying he got ripped off. Gotta thanks the tech or whatever that make tesla cheaper. Unlike those legacy car companies, they are always increasing the price. My kid might see a $100,000 honda covic base model. What a joke
$7500 federal, $2000 State, $3000 local, and $500 from the utility for me. My $56k RWD Model 3 went down to $43k. I then sold it in 2022 for $39k for a $51k AWD Model 3 with no incentives.
Or what a 1MB stick of RAM will cost again in 2031
They attracted dudes and children like no other car. It was a fun time, but now they are more common than camrys and Rav-4s around here.
I would buy that back for sure and keep driving it
Meanwhile my 2023 has 44K miles.
This is how much I paid for mine in 2018. plus 10.75% tax rate :(
Thats what I paid for mine as well... keeping for the free lifetime super charging.
Ya. Performance only.
Are you getting another one?
The only model that'll do that now is a Cybertruck, but the con is how polarizing it is.
Yep. 140k miles. Free supercharging. Still drives like new. Disheartening with the value drop but one of those - if you’re happy when you got it, and you’re still happy with it, then no need to concern yourself with the price drop thing…or denial… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why is he not answering this question
I got a Model X 100D in the Netherlands. The price drop is insane, mainly because of regulations and Tesla price cutting making it less attractive. It was €135.000 new and is probably valued at €27.500-€25.000 now But as long as it is still in my possession it feels less like a loss of money 🙈
That’s why I bought Hummer EV Edition 1 SUV 😜. It makes me find an opportunity to get out and drive around and enjoy my car.
What is it ?
The other comments make some good points but even my AWD in 2021 was 56k and that's because the incentives were gone.
The insurance carrier also needs to consider other expenses/issues that are tied to repairs - rental cars, parts availability and in some cases diminished value. All those add to the likelihood of a total loss as well.
I have left my window sticker in the car on purpose when I traded in my 2018 Model 3 for the 2025 Model Y. The Model 3 Long Range RWD was more expensive than my Model Y AWD
Hey, exactly like mine that I had. Even same birthday. I let mine go after 220,000km. Upgraded into a 2024 Model Y
Looks like 80% of it might buff out
Yes. How time flies!
Yup! Bought another Model 3 Long Range premium.
Big fat bald faceted lie.
Is he talking about the 12 volt?
Smart deal
I think the batteries are going to last much longer than people think.
Nice it's worth framing
I bought my 2016 90D model S (after Oct)with all the bells whistles including moonroof from TESLA for 54k (after someone else had for 3yr lease). Still going strong at > 125k miles. Just put brakes on for first time. Third tire change maybe next year. It came with the original sticker too. North of 100k. I’m pretty happy with the decision.
The more time that goes by the more I'm really bummed about losing this car. It was a great car! I will say the difference between hardware 3 and hardware 4 is like night and day. It's something you might want to go take a look at.
Wow!
just got rid of mine and went to a 2026 y, loving it so far
My 2017 MX p100d (bought used) had the original sticker at $180k
I recall a cop stopping me for watching TV while driving. He made calls and know one knew anything about it. Convinced I mounted a tablet on my dash 😅. Lack of any guages convinced him, finally and he left scratching his head. Also, had border guard do trunk inspection, while stuff in the frunk whent unnoticed🤣.
Why are you replacing the battery only even in 2 years if the mileage is super low now like 50k
2022 Model 3 is like $16k today. That one is like $10k now. Ouch.
Did you transfer the EAP/FSD !?!
Yep!
I actually had the same model. Was fortunate enough to upgrade to a 23 model Y because I drive a ton.
I still have my 2018 model 3 with 40K to it. Best car I have ever owned. My wife drives E300 and it has been a pain to own it!! I paid $59K less $10500 incentives.
Not sure about where coolest car came from? But that’s fine!
How much is that going to be?
