How does FSD transfer work with the March 31st deadline?

drahgon | 2026-03-08 20:03 | 21 views

Anyone know how it works if I buy a model y right now am I still eligible to transfer my FSD from my old Y? I'm seeing things say that I have to actually get my new y by the 31st?

Website says take delivery by 3/31. Used to be order by 3/31 but they changed it last week

drahgon 2026-03-08 20:09

So what if I order and they say it's going to be here by then and then it's delayed for whatever reason am I screwed?

TheNoLifeKing 2026-03-08 20:17

According to the current rules, yes. I have reached out and confirmed as much.

Yes

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-08 20:24

Correct, you now hav ot actually take possession of your new Tesla by 3/31 to transfer or your are SOL. Ordering date no longer matters. That was changed recently. So if they are not saying you will receive it by then, assume you cannot transfer. You should probably focus on existing inventory if this is important to you.

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-08 20:26

Correct again. They were clear about that. Again, don't chance this with a new order that is supposed to get delivered days before the deadline. Focus on existing inventory and take delivery ASAP (like within a week).

My delivery date now is between 3/15-3/31 and I have to take delivery in Vegas more than a 5 hour drive away. I hope I don’t get screwed!

drahgon 2026-03-08 21:13

Dang man thanks for letting me know. Yeah I was looking through that existing inventory and all they got is that stock gray yuck.

drahgon 2026-03-08 21:14

Damn man keep me updated. it tells me I can get it in 2 to 3 weeks. And I think 3 weeks would basically be pushing it. What happens if it gets delayed do you know if you can refuse delivery and then go get an existing inventory at that point?

drahgon 2026-03-08 21:14

Do you know if you can order a new one and if it gets delayed refuse delivery and then get an existing inventory one?

Kirkandree 2026-03-08 21:19

I will, the worst part is I can’t find my title for my existing M3LR 2018. Waiting for NV DMV to expedite my new title to me so I can transfer my FSD, car title is one of the requirements of course.

fratzba 2026-03-08 22:09

Actually, having the title is not a requirement for the FSD transfer, unless you are trading in the car. If there’s anyway you could float the money, you could get the new car and do the transfer, then sell the FSD-less old car to CarMax or carvana, or whatever when you get the title.

Well if you don’t get what you want, the Rivian R2 will be out soon.

Call your local Tesla delivery center and ask them about this. You want a custom order but if say it's the 25th or 26th of the this month, can Tesla sales help you get an inventory car for you to transfer FSD. Hopefully they'll do what they can to make a sale this fiscal quarter. I bought an inventory car and picked it up on Friday to transfer FSD. Good luck to you.

drahgon 2026-03-09 01:09

Not a bad idea to give them a call thanks for the tip congrats on your new car!

Full_Tap_4144 2026-03-09 01:11

I transferred FSD from my M3LR 2018 on Friday. Title of old car not needed. I kept my M3, not trading it in to Tesla. Does NV require car title to sell car to a dealer? I've sold cars to dealers in CA, where I didn't have the title on me. The dealer takes my car and I sign a form that I don't have my title. Are you trading your car in at Tesla? I found other places offered more to buy my car than Tesla.

Redvinezzz 2026-03-09 01:25

I read that if Tesla gives you a delivery date before the deadline then Tesla themselves have delays that push past the deadline they will still honor the transfer but if you delay it then they won’t

manateefourmation 2026-03-09 03:28

They honor the deal that was in place when you ordered the car. So if you ordered when it was take delivery, they should honor that

TheNoLifeKing 2026-03-09 04:14

They don't. There's plenty of evidence in the other threads that this is not the case.

manateefourmation 2026-03-09 05:54

If they changed this, that sucks

Kirkandree 2026-03-09 14:47

Carvana only offered me $500 more for the car than Tesla. They ask for pictures of the title in the trade in form.

LeoVicard 2026-03-10 06:26

Personally, I think the fsd transfer program will be back in 2027-2029 sometime. They always run promotions every quarter to boost sales. It will just depends how bad sales are / how desperate tesla is to boost the sales numbers.

Kirkandree 2026-03-11 20:40

If your delivery date is past 3/31 now, without an order in, you can pick an existing vehicle and transfer it. If you design something new and its delivery date is 4/1 +, you’re out.

This time may be different due to moving to a subscription model going forward
