Yeah, $600+ month car payment plus $200+ insurance to save $150/gas money vs paid off 2016 Pilot, I’ve been there

lanamakesart 2026-03-08 18:22

any other comparable car is that price, plus the gas on top

farmerMac 2026-03-08 18:27

Not been driving much ?

koffee_addict 2026-03-08 18:32

60-70 miles a week. Work commute and groceries.

koffee_addict 2026-03-08 18:34

No payment. I paid in full. Insurance $98/mo. Same as my previous gas sedan.

glockitsthecops 2026-03-08 18:47

I mean that’s like saying $600 a month car payment and $130 insurance and $150 in gas on a new car. Any new car is going to have a car payment I don’t see how you’re dinging that

OldShadow128 2026-03-08 18:50

I pay $210/month car payment, but my insurance is $280 because I only just bought the new car this year. So because the car is new I pay high insurance. My insurance agent actually LAUGHED on the call when I told him about my 2 tickets on my recent driving record, and told me when they fall off, my insurance will only drop \~$40/month. Compared to my gas truck I used to drive, I generally save anywhere between $250-$350 in gas savings, and I also don't pay for bi-annual oil changes or annual brake pad changes. tire rotations are $65 at Tesla service, or I can just buy a donut wheel, a couple carjacks, and a power wrench, and I can save another \~$3100 by doing it myself for the life of the vehicle.

shiftfury 2026-03-08 19:09

Any other car these days runs you for around the much monthly. My insurance only went up slightly vs. my previous ICE car. Why the negativity? You can have a 2016 paid off Tesla as well, by the way. This is such a stupid take.

jvandenburgh27 2026-03-08 19:39

Yup, that's the way. Almost the exact same. Paid cash via wire right before pickup of my M3P and insurance is under $150 a month. I bundle my auto and homeowners. Home charging is an absolute game changer. ⚡

BrightOnT1 2026-03-08 19:44

Not only that, most states are now charging an ev annual registration fee to recoup loss of gas tax. Minnesota it is 325 bucks. People convince themselves of the cost savings because it makes them feel better.  Nothing will replace driving a well built and maintained car, with cheap insurance and no car payment. Buying a used car is underrated for environmental purposes too even if ICE.  US is just so broken in terms of people going into debt to drive new cars.

jvandenburgh27 2026-03-08 19:50

Not everyone wants to drive a shit box and not everyone goes into debt buying a new vehicle. 🙄

Atomic-Bell 2026-03-08 20:04

He compared it to a paid off car, not a leased ICE vehicle

Blazah 2026-03-08 20:04

Mine is 312 a month, insurance is 110/month - I've paid 190 in "gas" since May 2025. It's a Model 3 RWD highland. I have had to put about 3 gallons of washer fluid in it though. Love free charging at the apartment and at work, and at the gym, and at hotels that I go to.

PurpleSausage77 2026-03-08 20:30

Good job, we are ahead of the game. Feels good af. I went for an old one with free SC01 charging & internet connectivity. Freebies from a billionaire, I’ll take it. 75k mile 2014 S 85 ran me $13k usd. No payments just insurance which you have to run on anything anyway. I can source 19” tires cheap and have a good mobile tire guy. DIY fixed the $60 hvac fan motor, $40 cooling fan motor, and $20 fan resistor. Remedying front suspension squeak with a grease needle. Sourced extra set of Tesla 5x120 rims with tires for $500, and $250 level 2 charger complete with 6awg teck cable, just need to buy a 60A breaker and I can also DIY that as I’m an electrician. Iran got bombed two days after I purchased, then oil went to the moon. Let’s see if it hits Russia invasion in to Ukraine levels ($100+ to as high as $115 oil). Once I get my S more dialled in I’ll sell my beater 08 Civic for $3k. Also don’t forget the power as well as power delivery that we get in an EV would almost certainly in most cases be the equivalent of a turbocharged or supercharged gasser requiring premium gas, or diesel which is even more expensive in most places North America.

Master-Journalist888 2026-03-08 20:32

Need to have a vote how many people here have $98/month Tesla insurance and buy the car outright. I think the number should be well over 0.5%

mont1ff 2026-03-08 21:06

To me it's not the cost of gas, it's the not having to go to a gas station ever again.

Kilo_Juliett 2026-03-08 21:09

I do that daily lol

Lambor14 2026-03-08 21:14

Ok?

trinityiam72point5 2026-03-08 21:16

Shit OP, where are you at? I pay $187 a month here in SoCal, via Tesla insurance, checking with triple A for a cheaper rate.

TheIzo 2026-03-08 21:26

What's wrong with going to a gas station? Most have EV chargers as well, no?

Havegooda 2026-03-08 21:34

Takes time out of your day and are generally gross, and have the opportunity to interact with some sketchy folk if you're unlucky

DougForsyth 2026-03-08 21:38

My Model Y performance has $910/6 month insurance, which is $50 less than my Camry hybrid was.

Ordinary-Map-7306 2026-03-08 22:09

7000 kWh this year. $273.

mont1ff 2026-03-08 22:12

This guy knows the truth I speak.

Not-An-FBI 2026-03-08 22:57

I do that hourly lol

THEOLDCWO 2026-03-08 23:11

Where do you buy .04 kw electric? Or do you have free charging?

itsmeumkay 2026-03-08 23:11

I’m so glad I made the decision last year.

Fitzwoppit 2026-03-08 23:47

We bought ours outright, but got insurance through the company we used for house insurance. It turned out to be cheaper that way since they gave a discount for having both through them.

joafonso2020 2026-03-08 23:54

People. Hear this man

Zealousideal_Aside96 2026-03-09 00:25

That you have to go somewhere you don’t need to if you have a charger at home. Plus you need to wait there vs just plugging in and going into your house for the night

boiboiboi666 2026-03-09 00:37

This guy goes 60-70mph

choicemeats 2026-03-09 02:12

Not around here and if there are they are priced similarly to gas. But I do stop in time to time for snacks

PhoteksTTV 2026-03-09 03:44

I actually still enjoy stopping at the gas station to get a red bull and snacks lol

xXavi3rx 2026-03-09 06:10

Where I live is exactly.04¢/kWh for home. Before I moved cities I was paying .02/kWh.

PapaEchoLincoln 2026-03-09 06:25

I'm guessing anywhere besides California

Firetuna2108 2026-03-09 06:47

It’s more the extra time it is to detour rather than charge in unused time

Tradetheday2093 2026-03-09 07:26

Cali charges us to breath

lonestarbrownboi 2026-03-09 12:42

100% supercharger is crazy...

lonestarbrownboi 2026-03-09 12:48

https://preview.redd.it/ay1zjzh8n0og1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb7f0896b892b464f6b60814bd9c1a8a6843e583 My stats for (almost) 1 year, over half the total cost is from 1 24h road trip where I supercharged a bunch. Free charging at work is awesome

Master-Journalist888 2026-03-09 13:47

There is a land far, far away Where there's no night, there's only day Look into the book of life and you will see That there's a land far, far away Where Tesla insurance is $98 a month Where people don't have car payments. That there's a land far, far away

Worried_Ad_1288 2026-03-09 15:10

What's crazier is that you've never heard of tesla owners living in apartments

lonestarbrownboi 2026-03-09 15:52

You're right, I think it's crazy to buy a Tesla if you have 0 access to charging at home or work. If you charge 100% at superchargers you're literally better off buying an ICE

Worried_Ad_1288 2026-03-09 16:03

People buy different cars for different reasons - not always about the fuel. For example, some people buy Tesla's because of the software or the less frequent maintenance schedules vs. ICE or because they like the white interior or because they wanted a frunk. Food for thought :)

betmaster2 2026-03-09 17:19

Why? I still got a tesla 3 from 2019 100% supercharger still working fine

junlowe 2026-03-09 21:04

7000kwh in less than 3 months??

KlutzyConsequence952 2026-03-10 01:02

If you do alot of mileage daily like me ±200km your better off getting a ev. I used to spend 200 to 300$ in gas every week. You can get a pretty decent Ev for alot less than that.
