Looking to buy a used Tesla. What is the best place to buy one?

Anywhere other than Tesla. Cars.com is more reasonably priced in my experience, and you can test drive the car, you can’t do that if you buy through Tesla.

Alternative-Bit-5398 2026-03-08 11:06

Do they come with warranty if you buy from cars.com?

drewtt 2026-03-08 11:23

They will have the remainder of the original factory warranty.   If you buy directly from Tesla, they add 1 year /10,000 miles ( the lower between them)

thisoilguy 2026-03-08 11:28

Auction

PapaPapi33 2026-03-08 12:12

Anywhere but the Tesla website.

Frozenboyblue 2026-03-08 12:26

This is helpful Ty

Virtual_Telephone_36 2026-03-08 12:44

No. But even if you have the warranty from Tesla, they are slow, and may not cover it. Take the money you save from cars.com and set it aside as a rainy day fund if repairs are needed. Probably 6-7k cheaper vs buying from Tesla

CrustyB123 2026-03-08 13:05

What’s the most important thing on a used Tesla out of interest - is it age or mileage? Feel like for a petrol car is more mileage but seen Tesla’s that have reached 300,000 miles so is it more age that degenerates the batteries?

BeginningScarcity939 2026-03-08 13:09

Definitely not carvana, some of their listings were 13k higher than what I was finding privately and I could not figure out why

mjsimmons1988 2026-03-08 13:10

I disagree. I’ve been looking for a few weeks religiously. Car.com, Carvana, Carmax, cargurus etc. are all pretty damn close to Tesla on what I’ve been looking at. Those other sites may be a few hundred to a thousand cheaper, but definitely not 6-7k. I’m looking at used 2023 model 3’s LR AWD with low mileage.

Tin_Can_739 2026-03-08 13:11

I would avoid salvage, unless you can fix the car yourself and get it <half market price. Getting some warranty on the battery and motor is worth something. I got mine from hertz and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. I have had some fairly nice luxury lexuses and Mercedes vehicles.

Asleep-Set6868 2026-03-08 13:24

From an "adding to your account" perspective Tesla is best.  I got my 3rd from them and it was quick and easy.  It is scary / I have heard horror stories as you can't see it before you get there (and might need to pay a relocation fee) but I showed up at pickup with a cashier's check ready to walk if anything was wrong but was pleasantly surprised.  I did get one that was very low mileage though (<7k miles). Also no dealership frustration or runaround.  Probably not the best if you're looking for the lowest price though.

EVauto. Com

ja_staubin 2026-03-08 13:32

Great experience buying a M3P from Tesla. Same price as everywhere else and get the extra +1 year to your bumper to bumper.

ConclusionFlat1843 2026-03-08 13:37

Same here. I just searched three months for my Tesla. The prices on Tesla's website were similar to what used Teslas were selling for at random dealerships in my area. I was looking for FSD included so I ended up buying a trade-in from a Jeep dealership.

ConclusionFlat1843 2026-03-08 13:39

I just bought my used MYP last month. The biggest help to me was autotempest.com. They aggregate listings from multiple car sites.

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-08 13:46

You just have to accept a massive premium when you buy from them though.

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-08 13:48

For the MX the only place to not pay thousands extra is a private sale. Tesla charges five-figures over market value and other dealers or national sites thousands. They will accept a car in trade in then sell it for $20-30k more.

Asleep-Set6868 2026-03-08 13:53

True. It was worth it to me as I was looking for a lightly used highland M3P last year and there weren't any in my area and I couldn't do a long drive / fly to look at and buy one out of my area. It was still 20k less than buying new and low mileage so I'm not complaining. It could be a good option if you're considering new vs used, but you'll definitely pay more than auction / some other used dealerships.

TheUnknownStuntman51 2026-03-08 14:11

Age. Mileage isn’t nearly as important with electric motors or battery degradation. Tesla also doesn’t release service history, so look for one that looks like it’s been well taken care of on the interior. That owner likely was particular about the car, and had many things taken care of under warranty.

Lawlmuffin 2026-03-08 14:18

Can you elaborate why?

Relative_Carpenter_5 2026-03-08 14:46

FSD app.

spewing-oil 2026-03-08 14:55

I disagree with this as I just purchased CPO on Tesla. Pricing was cheaper for 22 mylr than other options, plus AB and extra year warranty. But do not expect them to actually inspect it thoroughly. I’m not sure they even drive them. Mine is going in to service to fix multiple issues with the car after pickup.

PapaEchoLincoln 2026-03-08 15:01

I just got a 2023 M3 LR AWD with 25k miles from Tesla for $35k after all fees and taxes. I chose a specific color combo for it. What prices are you seeing?

PapaEchoLincoln 2026-03-08 15:01

What issues are you seeing? Not sure if I’m lucky or just didn’t notice any issues yet with mine that I just picked up

RedBandsblu 2026-03-08 15:05

How much is the 2023 model 3 going for now? I got mine about a year ago for 25k with 30k miles

Minimum_Contributor 2026-03-08 15:09

I think because they have been offering really fair “buy” prices for people then adding their standard markup/sales cost

Minimum_Contributor 2026-03-08 15:10

This. Their “trim” field doesn’t directly match up with everyone else’s sites but it’s a really good start

spewing-oil 2026-03-08 15:13

Whining noise from power train (main issue) Passenger Electric seat heater not working Passenger seat Cushion not secure Rattling sound from ac/heater at low speeds Wheel weights falling off

BeginningScarcity939 2026-03-08 15:22

Yeah that must be it, cause I literally was seeing cars that are around 10-13k for older S going for 24k when I was looking for one and I was like... wtf

HistoricalJob2807 2026-03-08 15:27

Got mine at Tesla. Traded in my 3 to Bidbus for a good amount, and basically swapped it for a MYP. Felt like a brand new car. Maybe I was very lucky, but it seemed like Tesla refreshed the car, and added OEM parts to make it look at feel new. I only paid a thousand more than local dealership. I mod cars, so I freak out when I buy used because you never know what’s under the plastic/suspension upgrades/removal. I wouldn’t trust a used car on the lot unless they give me warranty. Tesla will comfort you the most with that 1 year/10k warranty.

username17charmax 2026-03-08 15:38

I have bought 3 preowned cars from Tesla and I was able to test drive them all. The key is to find one st one of your local locations.

QuentinLCrook 2026-03-08 15:38

FSD Hunter?

hawkaluga 2026-03-08 15:55

Are they covering all that under warranty?

SD_Aztec 2026-03-08 16:47

I’ve purchased twice through Tesla, both great experiences and good pricing that was comparable. Plus, get the extra warranty. I think there are deals to be had with the right timing.

anopy1 2026-03-08 16:51

Yes! It’s where I bought mine and Alex is a solid guy!

Virtual_Telephone_36 2026-03-08 16:54

I’ve bought 3 from Tesla, one from Carvana, one from a different dealer, my preference is waiting to see what’s available outside Tesla. The warranty is nice, but I have a mechanic nearby that works on teslas and it’s worked out better to buy cheaper and pay to fix

trinityiam72point5 2026-03-08 17:46

Shit mjsimmons1988 you find a couple options, please please let me know. Looking for the exact same thing for my kid going to college. Out here in Cali and gas is wild. I’m a current owner of a 22’MYP and obviously she loves Tesla cars.

trinityiam72point5 2026-03-08 17:50

What is CPO? Excuse my ignorance please.

spewing-oil 2026-03-08 17:51

They will. They shouldn’t have sold the car as it is.

spewing-oil 2026-03-08 17:53

Certified pre owned. Not sure if Tesla calls it that exactly, but it’s the equivalent of other manufacturers CPO offerings.

htdwps 2026-03-08 18:01

Is that the app that tells you which cars are equipped with permanent FSD purchase?

quentech 2026-03-08 18:05

> No. Yes. You get the remaining original warranty. > Probably 6-7k cheaper vs buying from Tesla lmfao, in your dreams.

TapiocaFish 2026-03-08 18:05

Yes

trinityiam72point5 2026-03-08 18:06

Awesome, thank you!

ConnectionNearby6732 2026-03-08 18:27

From Tesla themselves, they give another year added to the warranty.

Farplaner 2026-03-08 18:30

Nice. Never heard of this app before, looks great

Any_Mulberry_2435 2026-03-08 18:52

I researched and Tesla itself had competitive pricing. Got a model 3 for $24k with 20k miles. Peace of mind with Tesla having the warranty protection. I've heard of folks buying from a dealer just to find out Tesla has cancelled warranty and super charging on their end since the car was marked "damaged" in their system. Rather avoid that but YMMV

openslot 2026-03-08 19:57

Not everyone has a reliable mechanic so you shouldn't put that into the euqation. I think buying from tesla is the best option for the average buyer because they wont get screwed over by third parties. Although you need to wait for good deals

openslot 2026-03-08 20:00

Buy it from tesla. You get the one year of warranty to fix any problems from the previous ownership

mattriver 2026-03-08 20:25

Both cars.com and Autotrader.com are excellent places online to buy used Teslas. They both have excellent filtering and overall search options, plus you can almost always get free carfax reports, either at those websites or the dealership’s websites which are linked.

regmeyster 2026-03-08 21:29

I found a better deal going to a local car dealership and not Tesla, at the time I was shopping. I bought a 24 MYP last year from a Benz dealership and still has all the warranty and was low miles so it was a win for me.

Disastrous-Push906 2026-03-08 22:34

You pay the premium but you get a year’s warranty for it

ryan4069 2026-03-08 22:46

I have been using a site called visor.vin. It has a decent number of filters and has a cool price/mileage visualization. It doesn’t show private party listings though, only dealers.

Feisty_Crab7052 2026-03-09 00:57

Tesla

SuddenBackground6127 2026-03-09 01:17

I used autotempest to find the 2022 MYP + FSD a year and a half ago. I opened 120 tabs and when it didn’t fit the bill I closed it and moved on. Was left with like 4-5 tabs and then negotiated a deal (not from Tesla), flew out, and drove the car home that weekend. 1 week later I installed my charger (I’m a sparky) at my house and it’s been a great experience.

PocketShock 2026-03-09 03:01

Anywhere if it has a warranty. Facebook marketplace is where I found mine.

matt0947 2026-03-09 03:07

Tesla’s used inventory on their website

Wahoowa15 2026-03-09 15:45

Shifting gears to new. Do we think Tesla will offer discounts on new inventory within the next week ahead of quarter end?

mjsimmons1988 2026-03-09 16:04

This morning I just bought a 2023 LR AWD with 22,000 miles for $28,900 before taxes. Still has a year and 8 months of warranty plus the extra year and 10K miles they give for used. From what I’ve been watching, that seems to be where the price bottoms out before someone nabs it.

mjsimmons1988 2026-03-09 16:04

This morning I just bought a 2023 LR AWD with 22,000 miles for $28,900 before taxes. Roughly $31,00 after taxes. Still has a year and 8 months of warranty plus the extra year and 10K miles they give for used. From what I’ve been watching, that seems to be where the price bottoms out before someone nabs it.

CombinationLower2010 2026-03-09 22:01

From Tesla directly, they provide perks, like extra warranty ect

ReasonableBranch7337 2026-03-10 06:20

I have a 2023 M3 I bought for $25,000 with 20,000 miles from Carvana while trading in my 2019 Silverado with them which pretty much was a straight trade because of the crazy good price they offered for my truck. It wasn’t a bad experience by any means and the car has always ran amazing with little to no issues. That being said I would still stay clear of them unless you know exactly what you’re getting into, there’s far too many horror stories and I may have been the exception. Carvana also doesn’t include mobile chargers with their cars and the ones that do have mobile chargers already included are “universal” style mobile chargers so if you didn’t previously have a Tesla or any EV at all for that matter your relying solely on superchargers until you buy a mobile charger or install a L2 charger. I would’ve definitely considered other places but Carvana kinda swooped in with a too good to be true trade in price and I didn’t hesitate to take it.

Illustrious-Read-852 2026-03-11 05:05

Tesla! There’s a Tesla pre owned sales center were I live so I went there. They had hundreds in stock. I got to test drive the ones I was interested in and the buying process was very smooth.

peppermintpattymills 2026-03-11 15:01

Yeah, I bought a 2023 Model 3 with 45000 miles expecting some scratches on the bumper and wheels, it was flawless. I don’t know if they touched everything up or what, it looked brand new.

peppermintpattymills 2026-03-11 15:02

You’re basically paying for the extended warranty which was worth the peace of mind for me (also I already had something covered).

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-11 16:07

For the X, the premium for buying from Tesla is \~$10K. That's an expensive one year warranty.

LordFuqo_the_Adequat 2026-03-14 04:34

I searched everywhere, n by far the best value overall, by a long shot, was right through Tesla..offered me the best interest rate out of 4 too
