I've owned my first Tesla since August 2025. (Model S) And it has been an ABSOLUTE blast.
Every time I drive it, I fall in love with it again. Me and my wife love it so much. Whenever we plug it in, and realize how fast it charges, we smile. Whenever we floor it, we smile. Etc.
Absolutely no it does NOT get old. Especially with those modern Teslas like a 2026 model Y, you'll fall in love with that thing and not look back. With the new one you'll have an 8 year warranty on the battery so you'll be good for at LEAST 8 years.
I'd finance a new one if I was you.

A new MY is $50k + tax. If you've only saved $15k in 11 years, a new MY might be out of your price range. Insurance is higher, too. And FSD is an extra $100/mo. And if you don't own a home, there are no savings in fuel cost. Check out used. Even a 2023 MY has HW4 but will be almost half the cost.

Not sure which MY you are renting right now, but you should test drive and play around with the model years you are considering to see if the newer updates are worth the extra cost.
I own a '23 MY with HW3 and IMO you should get the newer Juniper MY if you can afford it. The HW4 has a better outlook regarding FSD updates. It also supposedly has a quieter cabin and more comfortable suspension. Little things like the touchscreen controls in the rear passenger area is a good convenience feature. I also heard that the PowerShare feature is enabled on the Performance trim using an adapter.

Buy the newest you can afford. Newer tech, newer battery. Go dual motor. You’ll save a fortune on tires.

It doesn't get old.
I have the 2024 HW4 MY, absolutely would not trade it for a Juniper if someone paid ME to swap. Juniper is ugly, associated with right wing extremism, and no improvements.
Not sure if you have kids, but putting a screen in the back just seems like a constant source of family conflict unless you want to have your kid glued to a screen on every single drive anywhere. Car chats are some important bonding time that seems like it would be lost with the refresh models.
You will save a lot of money and enjoy your car more if you get a pre-Juniper.

It doesn't get old. There are teslas with many hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Ice cars start to break down at 100k, and are crap at 200k. There are teslas on the road at over one million miles. I know a tesla on the road with over 400k and still has the original battery. Since my tesla will probably outlive me, I financed mine so I'll never have to buy new (unless I wanted new hw)

finance it
hw4 yes or yes, some 2023's older generation came with hw4, the model 3 only comes with hw4 on new redesign, I'd still recommend the new designs instead, they're WAY better than the old ones
just buy it, used from tesla for the extra warranty, or from a dealer if u get a great deal, but USED, with 10k miles or less so you save the instant 10k depreciation from buying it new
account for the 99 for fsd, you WILL use it

it never gets old. my wife drives a M3 SR during the week for work, and I drive a f150. safe to say, im dying to get into the M3 on weekends. I love driving it, as it genuinely makes driving anything else less enjoyable. Not even necessarily because its "fun", but just because driving seems so easy in the Model 3, not to mention turning on FSD and having a personal chauffeur

It does get old, but in that long term satisfied kind of way. No piece of tech, even as good as the y, will be able to excite you forever.

A new car with a monthly payment is by far the worst investment you can ever make. Put what you’ve saved in the market or buy a 15k car.

It doesn't get old -- unless you are in love with the torque and acceleration.
Then it only gets old if you get in something with more ummppph. Then you'll want that!

Just make sure it is HW4. The HW3 experience isn't as good as far as FSD goes. It also sucks seeing updates come out, but none for you.

FSD never gets old. Road trip charging does get old. FSD still makes it worth it and I’ll always buy a Tesla going forward if it has enough seats and load for the job.
Get a white one the AC is a bit underpowered do the heat especially with that glass roof in AZ.

You'll still save some money buying slightly used. You can get a 2024-25 in the mid to high $30k's.

I still love my Tesla 5 years later, the only reason I didn’t get a second is the price of insurance.

There’s a used car dealer near me that has a bunch of high milage teslas that seem to be good prices. 2022 dual motor with 150k miles for 13k or so. I’d go that way if I had to do it again. Sure it’s probably got some creeks and battery degradation, but it’s also $30k less than new.

FSD is awesome. But according to my Chinese friends those electric cars are amazing. I bought my two teslas and don’t regret it. But I would search BYD in case that changes your mind for a financial decision.

What are you paying for insurance
aspiringengineerJ
2026-03-07 14:48
It’s complicated, my first car didn’t make much of a difference because the bulk of the cost was how high my coverages are. But for my second car i shopped a model y and Kia ev6. The y was $810 MORE per 6 months than my Kia ev6. I just wasn’t willing to pay $135 more a month indefinitely. If was the price of the car was higher that’s fine by me, something about it being an insurance thing turned me off. I got such a good deal on a lemon-ed ev6 because of the iccu (not a true lemon imo) I could t justify the ~$2-300 a month premium for the y.
I really wish Tesla offered insurance in NY. I even called an insurance broker to try to get it down but no one could beat it but that’s another story.
FWIW. My 6 month premium was 1700 with a Y and a beater, now it’s 2k and would’ve been 2800 per 6 months for 2 model ys.
