Still the best EV on the market

Codeandcoffee | 2026-03-06 00:51 | 217 views

I spent some time shopping for a new car last week. I’m coming from a model 3 and wanted another electric. I checked out a Tesla model S, Mercedes EQS, Audi E-Tron GT and a BMW i5 M60. Everything but the Tesla just felt like a sacrifice. Shorter range, slower 0-60, worse “self driving”, and so on. I was town between the BMW i5 M60 and the model S for a moment, but I just couldn’t justify sacrificing for a slightly nicer interior and luxury branding. So I bought a 2023 Model S long range with HW4 Annnnd it’s incredible. I have FSD on my model 3 but it’s HW3. Even the first time using it on the S I could feel the difference in sophistication.

Missed out on test driving a Mach E GT performance ;)

Still a great car. Might pick one up a 6 seater Tesla soon.

2nd best, it's missing the Plaid badge ;)

I’ve been sleeping in mine for months! It got me through the winter storm and in 20 degrees I only turned the heater on twice throughout the night

Yes look like the best one

He's poor.

bitwise97 2026-03-06 04:32

What's it like driving with that steering wheel?

2Easy2See 2026-03-06 04:33

Couldn’t agree more, it’s my favorite car I’ve owned so far.

brandinimo 2026-03-06 05:29

Taycan is better for engaging driving experience. I sold my Taycan Turbo and got a Model S. Prefer the S as an EV. If you want an engaging driving experience, go all in and get a 911.

There is no substitute for instant torque. I hope we’ll see an EV Boxter in the future

loki_the_mischief 2026-03-06 06:40

Where do you actually sleep? Don't you feel unsafe sleeping in the car

FrugallyFast 2026-03-06 07:06

No I don’t feel unsafe. Before my van broke down I was living the van life rent free. I just change locations everyday and never sleep past 6am. I’m about to sleep for a couple hours now and be up again before the sun lol

FrugallyFast 2026-03-06 07:06

Tonight I’ll sleep at a hospital parking lot and blend in. But travel centers and truck stops are where I feel the safest

_RFAML_ 2026-03-06 11:01

That's not correct, the model 3 is even better

Fuzzy_Club_1759 2026-03-06 11:25

But he has model s

obxtalldude 2026-03-06 11:32

Needs a hatchback. The amount of storage makes the S a much more useful car for moving stuff.

kloogy 2026-03-06 14:01

Who puts a bumper sticker on a nice Model S ??

loki_the_mischief 2026-03-06 14:50

That's a crazy idea, but it actually works. I used to park in RV slots to keep costs down during budget trips

Twofu_ 2026-03-06 15:10

Is taycan ev not as realiable comapred to model s?

brandinimo 2026-03-06 16:09

Head over to the Taycan subreddit. Unfortunately there’s a very consistent theme with electrical issues and battery cell defects.

fanstoyou 2026-03-06 18:10

Keeping it in the family

The first gen is as reliable as the Model S was before 2019 (not very). Second gen (>=2025), while still early, seems to have sorted things.

boltup949 2026-03-07 15:19

Was thinking the same thing…ruined it with the bumper sticker!

AreaPlayful142 2026-03-10 08:22

I never could pretend to like that steering yoke

jordangoody 2026-03-13 00:02

Where do you physically sleep in it? Do you put the back seats down?

FrugallyFast 2026-03-13 00:07

Yes seats down. Legs in the trunk and pillow behind the drivers seat. I have a rollout camping mat that I roll up everyday. Last night I slept in a warehouse parking lot that also has a lot of cars.

jordangoody 2026-03-13 00:08

That’s pretty cool. I’d try that. How much battery does the car use overnight usually?

FrugallyFast 2026-03-13 00:10

Not enough for me to notice. When it was cold it was more usage because I had to have the heater on. I only sleep for about 5 to 6 hours in one place
