Advice for buying a used Tesla

No_Mathematician2807 | 2026-03-04 02:29 | 25 views

I have never owned a Telsa and do not have much exposure to them. I test drove a new standard edition and a 2022 model 3 long range. I need to get back and forth to town for work and errands 50 miles daily. I think I want white interior and long range 2023 model for $24-27K. Is this a good idea? I have a little fomo about the hw4 but I dont think it is worth the extra $10K they are asking. I have been shopping at Carmax, carvana and Tesla's used, which I will have to travel 500miles to get becuase of state laws.

I just went thru this. I was set on a 2023 M3P.. bought the 2024 and I’m glad I did. Exterior, interior.. the whole car got updated. And the HW4 will keep you good for a while. If you don’t want to do that. I still suggest going with Tesla pre owned. They tack on another year of warranty. And you get free stuff. I got 3 months of free FSD, Premium Connectivity and Super Charging. I feel like Tesla is more thorough than a random used car lot. My car was damn near flawless and I’m really happy with the whole process. Plus you can get a referral from a friend where you get $500 off and the friend gets $500… pretty good deal to me.

Don’t use the Tesla website. Cars cost more and they give you less on trade. Service is non existent, they have no incentive to try and sell you a car, and delivery estimates are way off. Carvana is 10x better.

Buy local. Test drive it. HW4 is better than HW3 for sure but both work fine if you are not going to pay $100/mo for FSD. Enjoy your new to you car, odds are you will never buy a different brand again!

Thanks for the info on tesla website!

Look on autotrader.. try to check the battery health whe you can and if you can look for an LFP battery, Long Range sounds nice but the difference is minimal..you can probably find a M3 performance for that price range 25k

If you're buying through Tesla you get some type of warranty. I would watch their prices day to day because you can come across a good deal with a combination of a recent car, low mileage, at a decent price (and if you're trading in a car.) Check the car for cosmetic issues when you get it so they can fix it right away. Don't be shy about doing that. Put tint on it right away 🕶️

There's a Facebook group "OnlyUsedTeslas" that I found useful. Also, to save a bundle, consider a salvage titled car. Insurance companies total a bunch of EVs with a tiny bit of body damage. Most of the negatives go away in an older car. The big one, liability-only insurance, is easier to stomach if your car was cheap. Get one that can be supercharged.

Checkout the Tesla inventory. They have certified cars still under warranty and I got my late model 2023 Blue Model Y Long Range (w/HW4) for $30k and it has included the Tow package an Acceleration boost. And they even extended the warranty an additional 10,000 miles. Worth checking out. I love it.

How does FSD work without the front bumper camera?

Meanee 2026-03-04 13:29

Pretty well. FSD does make some idiotic decisions, but that's not due to the camera or HW3, what I have. There's a front facing camera array in the rearview mirror assembly, so it will use that.

No_Mathematician2807 2026-03-04 15:42

Thanks for the info on long range.

10,000 mile warranty doesn’t move the dial for me. I love my car but after my experience only a fool would buy from the Tesla Website directly. My car was delayed two months in delivery and they offered me 1 month of FSD (a $99 value) to make up for it. Carvana would’ve had the car to me within a week. Tesla employees just flat out don’t care about selling cars or providing good service. They have no incentive to care so I don’t blame them.

unshiftedearth34 2026-03-04 16:13

Tf? I know someone who bought used from Tesla and they got a 50k warranty.

PapaPapi33 2026-03-04 19:34

If you go on the website right now - the used warranty is 1 Yr / 10k miles. Your friend probably purchased an additional warranty which you can do if you buy the car from Tesla or literally anywhere else.

unshiftedearth34 2026-03-04 20:13

Probably got it included while Tesla was offering it a while back. Guess they switched it up, that sucks.

Capital-Control308 2026-03-04 20:24

My wife has a 50 mile round trip drive. You only get 60% of the advertised mileage. You charge from 20% to 89% to extend the life of your battery. She has to charge twice a week. We have a home charger we had installed

Salvaged will be a gamble if you don't know what you are getting into. If you do, it can be a deal. Just know your resale value will also be crap when you sell. Also some insurance don't cover salvage.

flintsmith 2026-03-04 20:54

Yes. It's a risk. AAA had no issue adding the car to my others, none of which have collision insurance. Liability only.

Ok_Lawyer3693 2026-03-04 21:40

I got a used 2021 Model Y with HW3. Happy with it, FSD works well, no major complains. For sure HW4 might be better but this gets me to office and back with minimal to no intervention. I don’t care too much for the fact that I need to take control during parking and some unusual condition which are pretty rare. If the price is right, go for it. You can always upgrade the vehicle in future.

Ok_Database_8706 2026-03-05 12:32

optimus can carry you and run 🤣

openslot 2026-03-05 16:29

How is service non existent? You get a year of manufacturer warranty which fixes everything wrong with the car compared to a car that is out of warranty

PapaPapi33 2026-03-05 17:31

And? You can buy a one year warranty from anywhere. Buy a Tesla at a better price elsewhere and purchase the warranty. You’ll still save money.

openslot 2026-03-05 17:44

I dont know where you live but I would not trust any 3rd party tesla warranty

LordFly88 2026-03-06 00:37

I bought my 3 as a rebuilt title. It was about $10k less than it would have been unbranded. I found pictures of the original damage, which was so minimal I can't understand how it was written off in the first place. Only thing I had to do was get tesla to do the HV inspection to get supercharging re-enable. Never had a single issue with the car. It's been so great that after the first year, i bought an S to go with it.
