My theory is that the biggest reason people hate screens is because most car companies software is so shit it makes it slow and difficult to find what you are looking for. But since they don't know exactly "why" they hate it they just blame the screen itself.

Got a Honda and love the new dials for the HVAC controls. I personally don’t care about the size of the screen, a small 8inch is more than fine. I’d rather a small screen behind the steering wheel for basic info like the S/X has if there was that option. And in trade off get smaller center screen and several buttons.

If you take a good look at the X it is pretty basic in the rear seats simply because of the way the falcon doors are built in. Feels pretty bland

Tesla's implied heavily that their design direction was more of the "we'll take care of you. Just relax. Don't need to touch any buttons" style. Which would work if autopilot is standard in all their vehicles.  Now they're raising prices and making it an add on. I'm waiting to see how the market will react to this.

Car guys don't love the EV driving experience though. EV's are not very engaging to drive even though they are fast, and are not great on corners coz of their weight. I do enjoy EV's, but I do think EV's are a bit boring to drive.

Big screens are distracting for sure, and while I don't think it is much of a hassle as I don't change a lot of settings while driving, it is suboptimal if not dangerous to fiddle thru the options while driving. You can use voice commands - they are not the fastest, and don't always work. Rotating the AC knob for temp, pressing radio buttons for different channels or sources are much faster than going thru the screen.

We’re keeping our attention on what’s happening around us. If I need to adjust a mirror for any given reason, I don’t want to dig thru a menu for it, taking my attention off the thing I want to adjust the mirror for.

They just don’t like change. Model 3 corners amazing the weight of the battery is offset by the fact that it dramatically lowers the center of gravity u can turn as hard as tires will allow and the car stays planted. And then the acceleration out of a corner is amazing. It’s very engaging and responsive if u drive it on the edge. I think “car guys” just don’t like the fact that it’s not challenging and there’s no build up or project aspect to it.

Why though? I’ve set mine one and haven’t touched it for years as it’s saved to my profile. Tesla added custom mirror position when in reverse last year (took them long enough…) that is saved to your profile. I wish they allowed custom position when in park instead of a default that is clearly designed for LHD even for RHD markets. Edit: Also, it’s only 2 presses in the menu. I’ve seen some cars where it’s 4 presses.

The acceleration out of a corner is very nice but the cornering itself is mediocre compared to a lighter vehicle. I would rather say it’s good for its weight class, which is a heavy sedan. This is on the stock MPS4S tires, haven’t tried racing tires on a track. On canyon roads in CA. Only had one case of rear wheel slip ever.

Model 3 performance's weight is 4,000 lb, whereas cars like civic type R, golf R, etc. are well within 3,300-3,400 lb. When you are braking hard, taking a corner, etc., all of the extra weight comes into play, even with regen braking, etc. The tires are pretty much the same size, and they are working so much harder with a heavier car. So is the suspension. Drive your car hard for some time, and it will also overheat much more than gas cars. You're right abt the car guys not being able to mod these is a big gripe, but engagement comes from working with the car by choosing a gear, experimenting with what works best in terms of using your driving skills vs. just pressing the accelerator and brakes. Which is why even with automatic transmissions, people want to use paddle shifters to choose their gears instead of relying on the car to decide what's best for you. It's a bit like using a food processor to chop up vegetables vs. using a fine knife and your knife skills. The food processor may provide better results sometime/most of the times, but you can achieve higher quality output using a knife, and also the results you want

I can’t tap the screen without looking at it. Just like with keyboards. I don’t need to look at it when I type on a conventional keyboard. But on my phone or iPad, I have to look where I’m pressing. anyway, I solved a lot of this stuff with the S3XY Buttons.

I have a new body model 3 and yes the interior is terrible quality of the leathers is so bad. steering wheel is rock hard like a go kart wheel. And seats don’t compare to anything in its price range but that’s not why I bought it

I've come to appreciate that I can get in any tesla and instantly find everything in the same spot. not the same for knobby cars who update their button location with many being unlabeled or hidden from view.

That’s understandable (it’s a touchscreen after all), but why the constant adjustment? What makes the angle of the mirror off for you? For me personally, the only time it may be slightly off is if I’m wearing a thick winter jack. In that case I just adjust the seat a notch and I find I’m fine and it’s more about the reach to the steering wheel. Then next time I’m in the car it’s back to original position as I may not be wearing the same jacket.

In 4 lane traffic or parked on a busy street or merging from an exit ramp into traffic or for any number of reasons, I need to see further left than the side mirror’s default position. Would much rather give it a quick nudge while looking at it than use the touch screen. That’s all it is. No biggie.

They know why, It’s not that hard to understand. physical buttons mean you can operate on muscle memory and tactile feedback and never have to take your eyes off the road. Power to you if you don’t care about that but we don’t need to pretend Tesla is objectively correct and everyone with a different opinion just doesn’t understand teslas brilliance

Their software is genuinely ass, the screen is unresponsive and it lags making it harder to actually get to the screen you want. Yes physical buttons would be better in your first point but it isn't helping that other automakers are putting subpar UI into their vehicles.

I have a Tesla and 2 weekend ice cars a I somewhat agree. The Tesla platform forces you to do everything on the screen, which makes it less confusing, and what others call bland, I call a clean Look. It’s a look that works on the car. Other brands mix and match screens and physical buttons and it gets more confusing, but I do think physical buttons to functions you use a lot while driving is still superior, although Tesla has some important ones covered on the wheel. Personally I think luxury brands today look WAY too busy and I prefer the Tesla’s “bland” look. In the end it’s not a big deal, you get used to each car and how it works for you, people that can’t are just not very adaptable or just love complaining.

I don't even think it's the software or the laggy computers in some brands. the biggest complaint i hear is that you have to be actively looking at the screen to get anything done. And I fully agree with that complaint.

I’m a car guy and I sure do love the ev driving experience. Not sure why you’re panting with broad strokes. Every one of my car guy buddies who’s driven my Tesla has enjoyed some aspects of it. It’s a great car to have in the fleet for a totally different experience

Yeah I am not saying it's bad, its power is unrivaled for the money. I am just saying that it does feel a bit numb after a while as there is not much to do in terms of driving. Car guys don't like automatics also vs. the manual because there isn't much to do there also. I think there is something about a gas car - the feeling of starting the engine, being able to rev it to your liking, hearing it, etc. An EV just goes and goes fast - which is a great experience, but it lacks the other aspects. You can change lanes, overtake, etc. without even having to think in an EV, something you cannot do in most gas cars. Tesla's also don't have any wheel slip/ tire squeal, which is also a bit of a bummer for driving enthusiasts.

You seem like a grounded, even-keeled person, and I hear a lot of your points as a convert. That said, the Model 3 Performance has track/drift mode and will hang tail and liquify the rear tires no problem. In track mode it's a pretty playful, intuitive, and responsive platform. Yeah, it's not a spec Miata, but in the class of spicy commuter cars (Golf R, Civic SI, Hyundai N, etc) it is the absolute best bang for your buck and the ONLY ONE that can be properly RWD and drive like one. I have a few manual cars.. ive worked on BMWs for 20yrs for work every day. i do understand what you're saying. My m3 is awesome for every day driving, though, and beats the pants off any manual. Automatics suck so bad it hurts. The single speed doesnt have the downsides of automatics, no painful gear hunting/shifting to get power. my 6spd manual bmw 5-series used to have that crown as best ride around town comfort wise. it still rides a bit better than the tesla suspension wis.. but as an every day car around town, the tesla is hard to beat because its so smooth and easy to drive in traffic. To go have fun the manual is fun, but its so much slower even though i would have rated the 530 as pretty decent before.

Yeah I agree that the Tesla is the best for daily driving and manuals of course are slower than even their automatic counterparts. I do think though that you are not using all the power of a Tesla most of the times, whichever model you might have, and flooring it most of the times will definitely get you some tickets. You could floor your manual car though and cover the same distance in the same amount of time maybe. You can drive your Tesla fast at night without anybody noticing coz of the lack of sound...that's a big plus too.

You're right! I had never even looked at a Civic Si closely given its low to avg horsepower, but lately I have watched some videos and I can appreciate why it has such a big fan following! I think if Tesla can program some simulated gears in there like the Ioniq5 N, it might satisfy some of our cravings ;)

instant torque is definitely addictive if you're into cars and driving. its a whole new experience. that being said, im lucky to live in a part of the country with lots of space for parking and storage, so i have 7 super varied cars/trucks in the family fleet that i maintain and get to drive whenever i get an itch to scratch i pick whatever feels the best

Because it puts important info right in front of you without making you look away from the road? Speed, blind spot camera, navigation stuff it’s all right there. That’s literally why HUDs exist. With a normal gauge cluster you barely move your eyes to check something. With one center screen you’re looking further off to the side, even if it’s quick. It just makes more sense ergonomically. There is no world you can convince me that removing the buttons was a good idea for climate control or glove box opener etc

realistically what normal car has navigation or blind spot cameras in the gauge cluster? 90% of people probably do not ever look at the gauge cluster, the only useful stuff it shows you is your speed and your MPG. Sure it'd be nice to have a Model S cluster but most normal cars don't have it like that anyway.

Yeah, I wish they kept the way the 2012-2021 model s did it. The right scroll wheel was exclusive for adjusting the right side gauge cluster and then used for ac temp, fan speed, display brightness, or whatever you set it to at that moment. It was physical with minimal intrusion into the ui. I miss my model s but I will say, I love having my ice miata. Both a dream cars for 2 different reasons.

no, i'm saying that i realized none of the information in a typical gauge cluster is actually critical when you're driving, including the speed. i set everything to auto for climate and it just works. i never needed to use the glove box other than put in my annual insurance because of the huge spaces in the center. everything else that i actually do use are on the physical buttons of the wheel or stalks.

Even in the EQS???? My experience with an 2022 E-class hybrid was generally pretty good in regards to smoothness and design, and it had all the physical buttons I needed, so that was a good experience overall. Sad to see that the experience is worse in newer and more expensive models.

Yea my dad just bought one last year, dont get me wrong visually the entire interior blows away any Tesla interior by a large margin. But for the tech part and the screen itself is just so bad for a luxury car.
