2026 Model 3 Rear Glass Cracked With No Apparent Impact

Woke up this morning to find a long crack across the rear windshield of my 2026 Model 3 (Highland). The car is basically brand new — I took delivery on January 6th. There was no rock impact from what I can see — no chip, no star point — and I don’t remember hearing or feeling anything while driving. I literally just found it like this this morning. The crack starts near the edge and runs across the defroster lines. Temps here in NH have been around 10°F overnight, and the temperature has been fluctuating quite a bit this week. I also haven’t used the rear defroster or heated glass for at least 3 days before noticing it. I considered booking with Tesla under warranty, but the next available appointment was 12 days out, and there’s always a chance they classify it as environmental/external damage anyway. Since I have $0 deductible glass coverage, I went through Progressive instead. Safelite has already contacted Tesla and is waiting for the OEM glass to arrive — no ETA yet. Progressive confirmed they will honor OEM replacement while keeping the $0 deductible. Pretty frustrating considering how new the car is. For anyone who’s experienced this — did the crack spread quickly? And is there anything I should avoid doing until it’s replaced

That center point definitely looks like an impact point. Something probably hit it while parked.

Sorry to hear that. Frustrating. Could you “feel” the crack on the outside? I had something similar happen. They tested with a ball point pen to see if the crack was on the outside. Seemed like that meant something hit it caused it, but I don’t know for sure. It turned out to be a defroster that went bad and caused a crack. It didn’t seem to spread too badly, but we weren’t having extreme temperature change either.

Can’t feel from the outside just inside

If there's no impact point I'm guessing a defroster line that overheated. I had something like this happen a loooong time ago, like 1985 or 86 with a POS Ford Escort GT. I was driving peacefully down the street, turned on the rear defroster, and within about 5 minutes the back window just exploded. After going round and round with Ford, they finally admitted that they knew about a possible issue and they finally replaced the window at no charge.

10F nights in NH with those temp swings is enough for thermal stress cracking on its own, no defroster needed. Rear glass on the Highland is thinner and edge-originating cracks from manufacturing micro-defects are a documented thing in cold climates. To slow the spread: avoid sudden big temp swings if you can and stick some clear tape across the crack ends until the OEM glass arrives.

Oh? That means no impact, so... Tesla's fault :)

This is key. It is a **stress crack** all day long. Use that term. I’m a former Safelite tech and I’ve spent nearly my entire life in the auto glass business. Show them the damage is on the inside with the ballpoint pen and they will replace at no cost to you.
