just bought used 2020 model 3

TumbleweedUpbeat2037 | 2026-02-28 06:09 | 20 views

I just bought a used tesla model 3 from carmax today it still has all of the previous owners key card and info still on it. I have two physical key cards. What should I do? Should I factory reset everything and set up my own profile or what should I do because the dealership didn’t reset anything and it has all the old buyers info

I was told that it doesn’t change anything for ownership so that’s why I was asking for advice since I’m new to Teslas lmao???

I was told by Tesla that that didn’t change anything for ownership so what you’re saying is I should factory reset it and it will basically be like a brand new Tesla with no previous owners? And should I wait until I have access to my key card in the mobile app to do a factory reset

Word of advice. If yiu ever ever ever buy any tech. Used. Always factory reset it. Just rule of thumb kinda common sense.

completely understand but I was just told not to so that’s why I held off on it and I wanted to ask

When you do a factory reset in the car, it doesn't remove ownership in the app. So whoever is still the owner there can still do things to your car (see its location, lock/unlock, etc.). There are 2 ways to get ownership in the app: asking the previous owner to transfer ownership to you (preferable way, if possible), or by following the steps in the app to get the ownership transferred to you by Tesla (will require documentation as proof). So you can do a factory reset in the car now and add your 2 key cards if you wish so while you wait for the ownership transfer into your account in the app (without it, you cannot do things to your car through the phone, including using the phone as a key).

Please ask, here to help and Welcome to the Family. Lots of new things to learn from those of us using Tesla for a while…

You can go to locks in the screen menu and add new cards and delete old cars. To get actual ownership transferred, you will have to contact Tesla to get the vehicle assigned to you in their system. You usually need proof of purchase, vehicle details and it takes a few days

Factory reset, log out and log back in with your own Tesla credentials. Then remove all the keys paired that you aren't yours. Take it back to service center if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself for some reason. They'll do it for you mostly likely for free.

I bought a used M3 from carmax as well. They should’ve explained to you how it works setting up your tesla account. Carmax does this automatically and It takes up to a few days for the car to transfer over to your Tesla account. Mine actually took the next day though. Wait till the account transfers to you then you can start deleting key cards on the infotainment screen in the car.

Reset the cars settings, take out the old owners phones very simple.
