2023 Model 3 RWD Cracked Rear Tinted Window at defroster warrenty advice

Hey all hope you are staying warm and out of all that snow that has blanked the Northeast as of late. I am writing to you all from Oralando Florida with a rear window warranty issue. As many have experienced, I have a lovely crack that has now engulfed both sides of my clear window. I bought my model 3 with 30k miles in it about 4 months ago. It was already tinted when I bought it. Well as many of you may know about two weeks ago we had a few days where it was 70 to 80 degrees during the day and then 27 degrees at night. Well one morning when it was 27 degrees I set to ore warm the car in defrost mode. When I came out I noticed this 2 inch crack on the left middle side right at the defroster line. no outside damage at all. Well within two days the crack went all the way to the defroster pad on the left side and ran down from the initial crack and then back up the passenger side to that defroster pad. Not knowing anything I did bring it into the Tesla near me and this guy took one look at it and said it was the tint. I am confused as to how this is not a stress crack. This car was tinted from the moment of purchase and we had no issues in the last four months, only went it got so cold so quick was it an issue. the crack seems to come from the inside, you cannot feel it at all on the outside. any advice on how to get this covered this happened at 52k and it seems obvious to me that it is a stress crack cause if it had been the tint wouldn't it have presented itself before now. Any advice on dealing with Tesla to get this covered because the quote I have from a 3rd party is $768, and we'll , getting it covered would be a much better solution. Thanks in advance, Jay

You bought it used, Tesla will likely not cover it. They rarely covered glass for in warranty original owners. Yes being an original vs second owner means something in terms of goodwill ability. It’s typically only reserved for issues with original owners.

You can try multiple service centers. I’m getting mine tinted tomorrow and I’m nervous just because of this.

Bought mine used. Had a tint installed. One winter later I get a crack that started at the defrost element. Went to service center and they had a tech look at it, no appointment needed. Right away they documented as a warranty repair. Looking at your photos I’m seeing on the left side a sharp angle which makes me question if it’s an impact crack. Hard to tell given the image. One last thing. I opted NOT to have rear tint reapplied.

I had my entire car tinted, other than the rear window. Not worth the risk, to me.

Is the glass cracked because this photo appears to show a hairline backwards S-shaped crack?

If there's a tint, there is a nearly zero chance they'll cover it I'm afraid.

My 2023 model 3RWD had a similar issue. I had tint installed and after utilizing the rear defroster, it melted the tint. After a close inspection, I realized there was a break in the defroster element, causing electrical arching, which therefore melted the tint. I, smartly, removed the tint before bringing it to Tesla, and they determined it as a manufacturing defect and replaced my glass. The tint company also replaced my tint free of charge.

Mine did this on my 2024 Model 3 a couple days ago, I removed the tint and it's going to Tesla on Monday, if you have no warranty since its outside of the 50k warranty you are probably going to have to pay for it out of pocket unless your service center determines it was defective. Tesla tries to fight hard to deny any and all glass related things.

Glass is not a warranty issue. When you get the glass replaced you can have it tinted again.

How is this possibly a warranty issue if it happened at 52k?

Tint damaged the defrost lines, this one's on you

it started as a 3 inch crack right on the driver's side defrost line. snack in the middle of the window

I've never seen that happen unless it's one of those multi-piece tint jobs where the installer splices two or more pieces of tint using the defroster line as the splice point, and inadvertently cuts into the defroster strip with his blade. But I have seen plenty of windows crack due to an overheated defroster line. I've personally had a rear window actually explode from that.
