Considering buying my first Tesla: what do I need to know?

OtherwiseMarket2239 | 2026-02-18 06:10 | 9 views

Hey all, I’m thinking of buying myself a used Tesla Model 3 2021 for around \~$15K (100k Mileage). I’ve had my Honda Civic 2006 for around 4 years now and while it’s serving its purpose, I feel an itch to upgrade and explore EVs. I think what appeals me most about Tesla’s are their AI features and low maintenance cost (allegedly). I typically drive for 55 miles every week day for work, gas prices here where I live in California, \~$55/ week, or \~$3K annually. The appeal for lower fuel costs is enticing and I’ve even thought of getting older models (SC01) for roughly the same price, losing AI features, but having free charging. With that said, I’m very interested in the FSD mechanics, so I’m not so sure I would like to miss out on that. Some weeks I’m scheduled to work at a different location, further than my usual job site, and I would be driving for 1 hour to get there, but the way back is 1 hour and 30 minutes because of the traffic on the freeway. With all of that in mind, how much money does it cost to maintain a Tesla Model 3 in terms of: gas, tires, repairs, and other expenses such as insuring the vehicle? If you charge at home, how much more does it affect your electricity bill? I’ve only really driven Honda’s, some people have mentioned that the Model 3’s suspension is poor and the driving experience feels stiff, would you recommend me looking into their more premium Model S’s but more around \~2018 used? Anything you’d like to share regarding your experience I would appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Your budget is 15k. You’re over thinking this purchase. HW3 FSD is really bad, I wouldn’t concern yourself over FSD with a 15k budget.

I use HW3 with FSD daily and love it

OtherwiseMarket2239 2026-02-18 14:05

What’s so bad about it?

Normal_Choice9322 2026-02-18 14:43

It's not a luxury car by any stretch. Think of it as an ipad on wheels

Hw3 fsd is fine.

It’s shit compared to HW4, I drive a HW3 car, have had two of them. Doesn’t even compare to 4.

Ok well that’s not my experience, I absolutely love it

Can you elaborate the differences? I’m not getting much from that statement.

If you love AI in a car you need to get one with the Grok AI assistant. You need a Ryzen processor to get that. If you like FSD, then HW4 is best. We got one of both. HW4 is significantly better - it is way more confident and seems to predict issues better. But to get both of those you will go above your budget. Getting Ryzen is easier. HW3 FSD is still better than what every other car manufacturer offers. Grok is amazing.

Thanks for your advice, it was very helpful.

Look at this guy’s history. He’s just a troll. HW3 is fine.

Otto_the_Autopilot 2026-02-23 05:00

Yea it's fine, but having just used a HW4 car, I can see why people are reacting the way they are.  I think FSD is a great price at $100 in a HW4 car, but is woth about half that for HW3.

You will same in gas saving if you charge from home but probably not what you are estimating. The fsd is great, while the hw4 is better the hw3 is good as well and you will appreciate it in the traffic for sure. It is definitely a computer on wheels. Check the battery health and make sure the degradation is less than 20%. Watch the tsk streamer
