FSD in HW3 Every Day!

Bickenchutt05 | 2026-02-18 02:39 | 49 views

Just like the title says, I use FSD HW3 every day in my ‘22 LR M3. I often read on here how everyone doesn’t trust it and it’s so terrible, but I don’t have that experience. My car gets me to and from work with generally 1 intervention max per day and that’s due to a map error. So, why does everyone hate on HW3 so much?

Go try HW4 and report back

Super_consultant 2026-02-18 03:04

Because HW3 sucks in comparison to HW4.  It’ll make you not want to bother driving the HW3 car if you have a HW4 car. For those that have subscriptions and both HW versions, I’m sure they don’t think it’s worth paying for the same price when the performance is asymmetric.

It makes me motion sick on my highway drive because it can’t stay centered in a lane and can’t maintain a single speed. I went back to AP because of that. Don’t know if HW4 fixes that

Sublime-Chaos 2026-02-18 04:39

Comparison is the thief of joy.

diaperpoop_ 2026-02-18 06:28

My wife loves FSD and uses it all the time when she uses my 2018 M3 for work. I don’t use it often just because it’s fun to drive the car myself.

rsg1234 2026-02-18 06:44

We have both and 3 is pretty damn good but I trust HW4 more.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-18 07:23

Not in self driving cars where safety and peace of mind is the main priority.

Sad_Principle_2531 2026-02-18 12:01

Idk. I havent subbed to FSD because I use AP and the amount of times it slams on the brakes for no reason makes me not trust it.

Philosopher115 2026-02-18 12:07

Autopilot absolutely sucks. FSD does not have that issue thankfully, so its worth a shot IMO. Only thing it does bad now is that it makes me look stupid when it does a stupid maneuver lol

ChiFxxd 2026-02-18 12:21

I use TACC and basic AP, it works for me 90% of the time and costs nothing. I did sub to FSD for a few months, I found it was especially slow and I took over many times due to how long it would take to "decide" things like left turns, and general slow driving. FSD also has no speed control so who knows what the car is trying to do. With TACC I set it at 10% above the limit and it works extremely well.

ConclusionFlat1843 2026-02-18 13:16

Same here. 2022 MYP with HW3 and Ryzen MCU. I love FSD so much. During the day it has no issues whatsoever. At night, I have to take control when I enter a parking lot. Any problems I have are always due to bad routing, which has taught me to check the route it creates before I go.

jacob6875 2026-02-18 13:35

I use it also on HW3 and don’t have many issues. Works well 99% of the time for me. I just want a mode between standard and hurry. Standard never switches lanes and hurry does way to much.

mystarrocks7 2026-02-18 13:35

I haven’t even experienced HW4. HW3 FSD has been pretty bad for me on its own.

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 13:46

I did! We also have a ‘23 LR MY HW3 that my wife drives with FSD 108 miles round trip every day. She loves it! I took hers in for service and they gave me a ‘25 LR MY that I had for 3 days. I will note that there are differences. But overall, I really didn’t notice that big of a difference in the way the car drives on FSD. Yes, HW4 will avoid potholes and roadkill, but otherwise the car drives me to and from work exactly the same. I like the profiles better. It’s nice not having to mess with speed. I actually felt like HW4 would hesitate more at stop signs and when making unprotected lefts and right turns on red. I don’t know, I think they are both good! Keep FSDing!

BikebutnotBeast 2026-02-18 13:47

Less safe. It's hard to prove. Less smooth and steady, yes that's easy to showcase. Also a few features that were released after v13.2. Reverse, and destination park options, etc.

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 13:47

Interesting, I haven’t noticed this in our 22 M3 or 23 MY. I wonder if you have another issue going on?

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 13:49

You should give it a try. I tried AP for a while like this as well and when I switched to FSD it was night and day. My wife switched over immediately too and we never looked back. We haven’t used AP since.

crazyjonwayne 2026-02-18 13:55

I have M3 LR 23' and use FSD daily. Only issues I have are in South Louisiana we have a ton of trees that hang over the roads.. sometimes I find it will ghost brake during those areas. Other than that I would say FSD does fine. I use it daily and love it. I do think about upgrading at the EOY, depending on the lite version of v14

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-02-18 14:00

Don’t get overconfident. It’s really not that good

SaltyATC69 2026-02-18 14:22

Because I tried it on a HW4 loaner and it was night and day compared to my 21 MY

Lokon19 2026-02-18 15:39

It simply does not work as well as HW4 and that’s to be expected.

Yep_why_not 2026-02-18 15:45

Where do you live and how far do you commute? 1 intervention could be a lot tbh. I have an X and Y with HW3 and it can’t navigate even the suburbs of Chicago let alone anywhere in the city driving under what anyone would consider normal patterns. It’s quite bad on both vehicles. Seems like it really depends where you live.

LMrningStar 2026-02-18 15:57

My M3 has HW3 and is running 12.6.4. The only issues I run into are navigation related where it takes a route that I wouldn't. I haven't had an intervention, other than to force it to reroute, in more than a year. My last real FSD based intervention was nearly 2 years ago and was due to a truck in front of me (about 150 metres) having it's tyre explode (no kidding ... explode is the correct word) and rain debris down on my car. I gave FSD about 1 second to change lanes before I took over. The only differences I can see between the latest FSD versions for HW4 (from watching other people use HW4) and my FSD is at the start of the trip and the end of the trip. 12.6.4 with HW 3 won't start from a parked position for me nor will it find a parking spot in a parking lot for me and park. It's also pretty bad at getting out of a parking lot (only about a 50% chance of even allowing me to engage at that point).

I really wish they would allow this information to be viewed if you weren’t on Tesla insurance. 🤞

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 16:26

Yes! I so agree with this.

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 16:28

What do you mean by, don’t get over confident?

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-18 16:33

East Tennessee area. I commute 54 miles a day in a ‘22 LR M3 on back roads, interstate, and city. My wife has a ‘23 LR MY commutes 108 miles a day same conditions but also over a mountain. Very busy interstate conditions. The interventions are almost always maps related. I guess I just have a different experience than others or others just like bashing HW3? I have even driven FSD through Atlanta in rush hour with no issues in my M3? Explain that?

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-02-18 16:50

It still is not perfect. It has a lot of issues. It can do dangerous things…. Either from its own actions or its own inaction. I have FSD with HW3. Even minor software updates have made it better or Worse over the past 18 months. Have you ever driven a FSD 14 vehicle? It’s very obviously better. By don’t get overconfident, I mean…. It sounds like you are relying on and trusting FSD 12.x and thinking it’s great. Just warning you…. It still does some very weird shit

DigitalJEM 2026-02-18 17:08

Yes!! If you’re in California, you should be able to enable safety score without being on Tesla Insurance. Unless they’ve changed it. I have Tesla insurance now so I can’t check, but before I switched to Tesla insurance I had safety score enabled.

HW4 does this too.

MartyBecker 2026-02-18 20:49

I have both a HW4 and HW3 vehicle and drive them both interchangeably on the same routes under the same conditions. HW4 is “better”, but they’re both about the same drag on my attention. They make the same knuckleheaded navigation errors. They both see new speed limit signs and then not adjust. They both need to be nudged along at 4-way stops because they wait to long when nobody else is there. They both need very few safety interventions. HW4 will continue to widen the gap, especially once “look at your phone while driving” is approved. But HW3 is a great driver’s assistance feature.

Clean_Extension7234 2026-02-18 21:07

Left on red light… that’ll make the pucker factor of 10 hit

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-02-18 21:07

Yea. Definitely.
