Parents of young kids: Model 3 now at 0% APR, or wait for Model Y offer to return?

Conscious_Song_1207 | 2026-02-17 22:06 | 25 views

Hi everyone, First time asking a question here ..Family of 4 here. kids are 5 and 2, both in car seats. I previously ordered a Model Y (Premium) this month when it had 0% APR because the higher seating position and hatchback seemed like the more practical long-term family option but I cancelled due to delivery timing uncertainty. Now I’m ready to reorder, but the 0% APR is no longer available on the Model Y premium in Belgium. It is only available on the Model 3 or model Y standard. Important: I will only finance at 0%. So my realistic options are: 1. Get the Model 3 now at 0% APR 2. Wait and hope the Model Y premium 0% offer returns 3. Walk away from Tesla altogether I test drove the Model 3 and liked how it drives, but coming from higher cars/SUVs, it felt quite low. My main concerns are: • Daily buckling of two kids in car seats • Back strain over time • Trunk practicality vs hatchback • Regret factor 5 years down the line For parents who chose a Model 3 with young kids, are you still happy with it? Or do you wish you’d gone with the Model Y? Trying to think long term here, not just react to the financing incentive. Appreciate real-world experiences.

Model Y is 0.99 for 72mo as well.. we prefer the Y for our 2 kids. 3 felt small for me. But take a test drive, or ask for a 24hr one.

2 kids, plenty of room. No issues with car seat (mine rotates 90 degrees) With the boot, gets your buggy but I’m sure it folds flat-ish. The boot is big and really deep.

Nahhh…. M-Y is easily more comfortable compared to M-3. Personally I’d prefer it if it were even 3%APR. I’d say go with M-Y(predominantly urban usage) or any other hybrid SUV(if need to travel long distances too). What I love about my 24MYLR: -the almost zero maintenance, -0-60 -safety -constant updates from Tesla (other minor aspects that aren’t significant). What I hate: -Long distance travel -ever increasing Supercharger cost/kWh and wait times -expensive repairs(if and when they happen) -Range anxiety(shall not go above 70mph when the next estimated recharge stop suggestion shows arrival car battery % of 7% or lower—- esp in winter) TLDR: just urban driving as 2nd car: happily take M-Y

Model Y all day. Car seat to front seat distance is a major improvement. Stroller storage in trunk is huge as well.

The roofs on both Y and 3 are somewhat curved with the apex around driver/passenger position - lots of headroom. That same curvature goes down towards mid of the trunk for 3 and the end of the car for Y. That means much less headroom in M3, and still good in MY. Next, rear doors in M3 have even lower sloping opening, that makes ingress and egress not that comfortable. I would expect not comfortable buckling kids in their car seats whatsoever. In 5 years they will be 10 and 7, so much bigger space in back would be preferable. Think about their sports gear - you will need a lot of space. Model Y.

What do you drive now? Model 3 is low man, I would break my back getting two kids in everyday. But maybe you're used to a low car already?

I’m late 20s early 30s, can get in model 3 fine. Parents 50+ did not enjoy getting in the 3 and preferred the Y. I have both 3 & Y. If I could only have one, I’d do model Y with kids.

What is the Model Y premium APR? It's 1% in the US right now. If it's the same in Belgium, I wouldn't let a 1% vs 0% difference be the decision maker.

This. If you calculate the actual payment differences between 0% and 1% it is tiny, especially when compared to the hit of buying the wrong car and having to live with regret and selling the car too early.

I have both the 3 and Y. 100% get the Y with your family makeup.

Conscious_Song_1207 2026-02-18 08:22

the Model Y has a 3.45% APR here. I would only consider financing if the APR is 0%, otherwise it makes more sense for me to buy a car outright or just wait

Conscious_Song_1207 2026-02-18 08:24

Thanksss, that’s really helpful. The roof height and hatchback practicality are exactly what make me hesitate on the Model 3. With two kids in car seats, I’m trying to avoid daily compromises long term. Sounds like the difference is more noticeable than I initially thought..

Conscious_Song_1207 2026-02-18 08:25

Coming from a VW Tiguan, so a model 3 will be much lower

Conscious_Song_1207 2026-02-18 08:27

Its 3.45%, so around €50 difference per month. So ye, financing the Model Y isn’t something I would consider.. I would only move forward with financing if the 0% offer becomes available again; otherwise I would either buy something else outright or wait.

We have both; Y Juniper and 3 Highland. Basically I would say more or less no major differance. Kids bike (7 year old) does not fit inside the trunk of Y anyway. You can not put 4x19' wheels inside of model Y trunk, you have to fold back seat, then it works somehow. It really is a bit sh\*t this back window design. If you are using this trunk cover thing, space is really really shallow. Of course you can easily remove it, but still not great functionality. Going skiing is easier with Y, due to middle seat possible decline... Yes, a bit more space in general and more roomy at the back. I mean we use 95% if the time Model Y as a family car. But we easily "survived" 1 year with just Model 3. Model Y has higher consumption, bigger and more expensive tires. Also car itself is more expansive.

As a taller guy my wife’s model y is much more pleasant with a car seat in the back than my 3

BidHead2364 2026-02-18 12:29

It's your back lol your choice. I would think you want a bigger car.

Ill-Warning-596 2026-02-18 13:03

Get MY if you prefer bigger space and convenience. I like my 25 M3 but I wish I got MY for many reasons

FYI - Recently lane centering was removed as a free feature on new purchases. To obtain it you'll have to pay $99 a month.

A 2 and a 5 year old? If this is secondary vehicle, 3 or Y is fine. But if this is your primary or only vehicle, I would only consider an AWD Sienna. They are all hybrid now and I think they get closer to 40 mpg. You will love AWD Sienna. It will go everywhere. Those sliding doors are a life saver in many ways. In the pouring rain, you can literally stand inside and buckle the kids up. You don't want to deal with potty issues while looking for a charging station. When the youngest turns 6, that's the time you move to an EV. By then, kids should be mostly independent and buckle themselves in and out.

Because you got a family get the y.
