Battery replacement

Bronjovi | 2026-02-17 21:13 | 35 views

Bought my used 2023 standard range awd model y at 68k miles, hit 70k and now it already needs battery replacement. It’s covered under warranty but I was just warming up to the car. This has me doubting the future of owning it. 2k miles was not enough to build confidence. Is this a special case of being unlucky or par for the course?

It is a special case of being unlucky.

Thank you Mr sour balls, I figured. Par for the course for me

Omacrontron 2026-02-17 21:30

Then get rid of it dude. Get rid of the car.

fastoid 2026-02-17 21:30

I'd say this is pure luck. Get your new battery for free and start taking care for it's long life. All uncertainty of the previous owner abusing the battery is solved and paid by Tesla!

Brandodude 2026-02-17 21:31

My infamous 2021 I bought half a year ago still going strong 5k miles in

ippleing 2026-02-17 21:35

It's a good thing IMO. You get a fresh battery!

Remote-Ad1209 2026-02-17 21:35

The "new" battery is not new. They will give you a used battery and that uses battery might also be going out.

thecrispyleaf 2026-02-17 21:43

I've heard mixed reports on that, seems some people do indeed get a brand new one. OP has to try their luck :)

561Jupiter 2026-02-17 21:47

Yes you get a new to you spec battery… model y batter swaps are a pain in the ass vs model s or x… whole interior has to come out

Bronjovi 2026-02-17 21:50

You’re right

aim4squirrels 2026-02-17 22:00

I'm of the opinion a reconditioned battery is likely better than new.  A reconditioned battery is going to have to be tested, bad cells replaced, rebalanced, connections and interfacings checked, etc. by a human before being reinstalled in a car. New batteries are just Robot Go brrrrrrr down the assembly line and minimal spec checks, which is why this previous one failed so early in the first place.

Master-Journalist888 2026-02-17 22:12

What Toyota V6…

Talkin_Out_My_Ass 2026-02-17 22:20

Not always true. I have a 21 m3 and I got a brand new battery. They did have to retrofit it because it was one of the newer charge to 100 batteries (forget the name) but it was new

BootFlop 2026-02-17 22:24

Pretty much all of them iirc. 3.4l, 3.5l, and the 4.0l, but especially the 5VZ-FE 3.4l. That’s the one used from mid-90s until about 2005.

Master-Journalist888 2026-02-17 22:27

I get that. Guy has a dead Tesla battery. You can respond that Toyota has a very reliable engine and I can respond that a Kohler toilet is the most reliable toilet.

Dull-Organization106 2026-02-17 22:28

Ya imo this is a good thing. To me it speaks as better longevity with a fresh brand new FREE battery. I hope mine goes out too before warranty is up.

MangoAtrocity 2026-02-17 22:28

Do you? I thought they were refurb

BobbyBrackins 2026-02-17 22:29

Exactly, and if someone’s kohler toilet exploded after they flush it, we’d chalk that up to unlucky and not par for the course 🤷‍♂️

Sublime-Chaos 2026-02-17 22:35

It’s like buying a car and the engine blowing out. Price for replacement is going to be the same. You were just unlucky. It happens in EVs, it happens in ICEs.

BootFlop 2026-02-17 22:36

Oh, you’re just having difficulty following the analogy. The point that “some times unlikely things happen”. 🤦

Bronjovi 2026-02-17 22:41

It’s under warranty, all is good in the world. Just wondering if this happens more often than I hear about. I was joking with Dr. 1%er

4680 battery? Wonder if they even have replacements lol

UpbeatPhilosophySJ 2026-02-17 23:07

New battery for free . Lucky

Remote-Ad1209 2026-02-17 23:21

Maybe some vehicles get a new one? Guessing depends on the stock or something. Not sure but one guy had the og battery and they had to replace it two times and both of the new ones were refurbished. I guess the first refurbished one went bad after 10k miles but the refurbished batteries have a warranty so all good.

BootFlop 2026-02-17 23:24

Should have gone with the toilet seat, you say? 😂 It’s probably because it is a car, cars & car durability being the overarching topic. Also a different make/model car being the alternative path. Not sure why it’s sent such a burr up your saddle-holder?

dantodd 2026-02-17 23:26

It's either bad luck or there were signs and the previous owner didn't want the hassle of the downtime for the warranty work.

BootFlop 2026-02-17 23:39

😂😂😂😂😂

skhanmac 2026-02-18 00:12

New? It’s refurb

Bronjovi 2026-02-18 00:34

It was manufactured in Austin…. It may be the 4680 I’ll have to look into that but I already dropped it off. Let’s see what I get

gilbertesc 2026-02-18 00:37

If it’s standard range AWD from 2023 then it’s 4680, not very many were sold though Let me know what battery you end up getting Wife has a 4680 and curious what would happen if needed a new one under warranty

Talkin_Out_My_Ass 2026-02-18 00:45

Now that I think about it, it wad definitely a stock issue. They could either retrofit and put in the new battery in a day or 2 or it would have to wait in their lot for 6 weeks or something crazy for a replacement to come in

Blazah 2026-02-18 01:01

I would personally be so happy if this happened to me. You got a great discount on a good car and now one of the major parts is going to be replaced. I'd call it a stroke of luck!

dja942 2026-02-18 01:57

\+1 - My 2021 showed this at 47K miles. I was under warranty but I have same feeling.

[deleted] 2026-02-18 05:44

I bought a new model 3 in 24. Going on 20k now no problems. It has so far been my least problematic car ever but it’s still young. People get 100,000s of miles out of these bad boys with no problem and the warranty backs that up. Having said that, if you’re having buyers remorse that’s valid.

Send_N00dB00bs_Plz 2026-02-18 06:21

Bro youre lucky. My buddy bought a 2022 awd lr that had 122k miles on and it’s only got only 75% soc left. Of course it’s just outside the warranty window as well.

Jaws12 2026-02-18 12:29

Our 2021 MY, still going strong from new 71k miles in. 💪

word-dragon 2026-02-18 15:30

It’ll be a refurb so not new. They promise you a certain level of performance but don’t promise to replace packs with new ones. Most packs fail for reasons unrelated to the battery, so while they swap packs, they aren’t giving you a $15k part because a capacitor goes pfft.

word-dragon 2026-02-18 15:33

I had a 2020 which needed the pack swapped after 4 years and 67k miles. It’s usually just a minor part that fails, but they swap the whole pack for someone else’s repaired pack, and send your back to be repaired.

Darry-Man 2026-02-18 18:11

This is some level of unlucky, we have a 2023 MY LR and since new we put about 48k miles and had no issues with the battery.

Basic_Twist404 2026-02-19 20:19

For a used old Tesla this is actually a blessing a disguise while under warranty. A lot of times it the battery being unlucky but people with low mileage who sell their teslas do not take care of the battery at all. My friend leased a model 3 awd and within 2 years he’s at 78 due to him not caring and letting the car sit at 100 for long time or below 20%. That’s kills the battery
