Job market for foreigners in auto industry?

TechnicalStart9678 | 2026-03-10 12:37 | 18 views

What is the job market like for foreigners who want to work in Chinese auto companies? I am currently studying for an MBA at a Chinese university. After I graduate, I would like to pursue roles in international marketing, international export/distribution, or partnership/global media. Has anyone had experience working for larger companies like Xiaomi, BYD, Geely, Chery, Changan, etc, or heard about others experiences? I am a white American, if that is relevant. Would these roles be suitable for someone like me? The auto industry is definitely where I want to establish my career, thanks!

I don't see much advantage for foreigners in Chinese auto sales/export roles—local teams usually dominate due to language, networks & market knowledge. Curious: why focus on auto sales in China specifically?

I reckon if you're older and experienced in the industry you could get into the foreign marketing/sales department of a Chinese car brand but not if you're a graduate.

The best way to do this is to start a social media platform or page. If you can build a following and show a proven record of consistent content, companies will value it as real experience and an asset.

What can you do that someone who is cheaper can’t do? What can you do that a Chinese counterpart wouldn’t be able to? Those are the questions you need to think about especially if you’re on the Chinese side of things.

There's a "influencer" that I saw on YouTube who's a program manager or something working for Audi, Changchun. Jobs like this do exist, but often with local field offices of Western auto companies.

Chinese car firms hired in recent years quite a few foreigners, but generally experienced designers and engineers. That’s kinda the profile they want/need. For the big state ones they all have already JV with Western partners who send expats over, but most of them are doing quite badly currently. Normally the program you’re in should have figures and placement service, so they should have a better idea.

There's a decent amount of foreigners in the marketing, comms, and overseas sales departments as well as engineers in r&d of chinese auto companies but none are hired from entry level out of school. Every foreigner I've met in the industry has entered as mid career with 5-10 years relevant experience overseas, not neccessarily in auto but at least transferable skills like people in ex-media or social media people would join comms or marketing depts as mid-level managers working with teams of entry level or intern local chinese. People with overseas dealer management or network experience would join overseas sales depts as mid-level hires or regional heads. I've met a few in the privately-owned brands like Geely and BYD. There are less foreigners in the state-owned brands though.
