BYD Shark cops?

01bigsnake22 | 2026-03-12 01:38 | 453 views

Is this a common thing or is it just a marketing vehicle (“you should be a cop”)? Spotted at the Marrickville Metro, Sydney

Up in Queensland some of them have brand new 250 series land cruiser prados

j12000 2026-03-12 01:42

Bit of column A, bit of column B. I mean it makes sense, they're plug in hybrid so if they're charged overnight and they're not driving far then they will be not using much fuel. Plus they can carry heaps of pamphlets and banners in the tub!

CreamyFettuccine 2026-03-12 01:43

I wouldn't think the opportunity to drive a BYD Shark would act as an employment attractor...

ProbableFiend 2026-03-12 01:45

It'll be a community engagement vehicle, so won't be used for normal duties. Probably donated by a dealership. Surry Hills Police just posted a Suzuki Jimny on their Facebook page as the same kind of thing.

RedditUserThomas 2026-03-12 01:46

I once saw a BYD Shark do a 10 point turn just to get out of a parking spot.

Anasterian_Sunstride 2026-03-12 01:47

Looks like it’s sponsored so… taxes saved I guess? 🤷‍♂️

01bigsnake22 2026-03-12 01:48

I guess it depends on who the target audience is… marrickville is in the inner west, lots of left leaning people…ahaha

Copie247 2026-03-12 01:49

Plenty have 300 series as well, and you see the occasional ram or Silverado to

mwsparky 2026-03-12 01:50

Yeah it's not like the old days where you got to drive a police pack falcon or commodor it's camrys and Hyundais now

MoNercy 2026-03-12 01:52

"You're under arrest! Now get in the tray. Promise not to jump out?"

Money-Ad-545 2026-03-12 01:53

Don’t think they are procuring them because of petrol. They may not have procured it at all and had it given to them.

CreamyFettuccine 2026-03-12 01:55

Even if it's a hybrid I don't think a 2,710 ton ute is a beacon of left leaning virtue :P

F14D201 2026-03-12 01:57

KU at one point had a BT-50 from Hornsby Mazda, I think the current car is a VW Amarok

Select_Repeat_1609 2026-03-12 02:02

Very appropriate for around town duties, if you ask me. Enough space in the rear seats for a perp or two, enough payload for a light bar and gear in the boot, good electrical architecture and ICE-to-HV battery generation. The amount of time that general duties cars get thrashed over short trips makes a PHEV sensible. Not appropriate for Highway Patrol as those cars need their engines warm at a moment's notice for 0-140km/h pulls.

Glad-Lobster-220 2026-03-12 02:10

Taking a bite out of crime?

Sgt_BracK 2026-03-12 02:10

Promotional Lolly Car.

notsocommonsense92 2026-03-12 02:24

Why would police need a ram or silverado? What a waste of fundsb

r64fd 2026-03-12 02:25

I’m left leaning and my vehicle weighs 2.8T and is a V8 turbo diesel. What’s your point again…

ResistPatient 2026-03-12 02:26

That windshield tint looks like much more than 10% coverage to me.

PsychoLamas 2026-03-12 02:28

I had the cops theme only as "shark cops, shark cops. What you gonna do when they swim to you"

Additional-Simple248 2026-03-12 02:28

I think Chatswood Police have a sporty Subaru as well.

Copie247 2026-03-12 02:30

4.5t towing. For horse floats and smaller patrol boats

techb00mer 2026-03-12 02:37

Pretty sure the TOU have a couple of RAMs

vanillaninja777 2026-03-12 02:41

It'll have its uses. NSW (or any state) police don't really fuck around when it comes to equipment and ability to perform. They seem to spread the love with fleet purchases, and they do need a vehicle to suit whatever comes up. Maybe they used to outsource or rent for this vehicles purpose, and maybe businesses are less inclined to offer their services nowadays. The police are definitely becoming more self reliant, and in the current political climate it's becoming more and more obvious why.

XDXkenlee 2026-03-12 02:43

Are those Yowies on your dash

Wood_Duke75 2026-03-12 02:46

It’s not uncommon for dealers/manufacturers to tart up a new car for the police and let them demo it. Wouldn’t be rated for pursuits.

IntroductionSea2159 2026-03-12 02:47

I imagine the fast acceleration and very bottom-heavy weight distribution would be useful in a high-speed chase.

IntroductionSea2159 2026-03-12 02:48

>Not appropriate for Highway Patrol as those cars need their engines warm at a moment's notice for 0-140km/h pulls. Don't know about warmth, but EV's have famously fast acceleration.

CreamyFettuccine 2026-03-12 02:49

Even those who lean left may hold beliefs that drift right, because real life rarely fits into tidy ideological boxes.

marcellouswp 2026-03-12 02:54

So basically institutional bribery.

CameronsTheName 2026-03-12 02:55

Sometimes dealerships will "donate" a car to the police. NSW police had FPV GTF 's and HSV Clubsport 's. I believe they were fully setup for police duty but not actually used. They are more so for community events. I have seen a FPV GT F and a Clubsport at a Beat The Blue event at Eastern Creek race track.

Car-face 2026-03-12 03:07

What do you believe BYD are getting in return?

Select_Repeat_1609 2026-03-12 03:12

The acceleration isn't the issue. It's simply that EVs don't suit the overall use case of HWP. Those cars sit on the side of the highway, drawing a few kW for onboard electronics and air conditioning, then chasing down speeders at full power, then cruising to a new location. Rinse and repeat. Then at the end of shift, it's handed to another officer that will do the same. The use case and energy draw doesn't even suit a 120kWh BEV with fast charging. For every factor including reliability and resale, a diesel internal combustion engine is *still* currently more suitable.

Turbidspeedie 2026-03-12 03:15

Increased payload, bigger cabin for police monitoring equipment, more comfortable, more space for criminals, the list goes on. These vehicles serve a lot of use cases and they're here to stay, just get over them already they aren't that bad.

Turbidspeedie 2026-03-12 03:15

Cheap advertisement

notsocommonsense92 2026-03-12 03:15

I love them? Just think the police already waste a large portion of their funds (my partner is a cop). They were able to function perfectly fine without them

Turbidspeedie 2026-03-12 03:17

What has the left or right got to do with anything?

Turbidspeedie 2026-03-12 03:18

Yeah but they make things easier and I doubt they paid anywhere near retail and probably got one or two for free as advertisement for the manufacturer.

Car-face 2026-03-12 03:19

That doesn't make it a bribe, that makes it a cheap advertisement

marcellouswp 2026-03-12 03:21

Publicity, mainly. More for the dealer than BYD itself. But there will always be the suspicion of something more. It's like apprehended bias rather than actual bias.

No-Search-7964 2026-03-12 03:25

No it really does mean “Bring Your Dildo”

KvArt996 2026-03-12 04:11

I saw both in Sydney few weeks ago

wwnud 2026-03-12 04:11

Ego. Qld conservative government trying to attract the exact type of person who shouldn’t be a cop to the job.

Car-face 2026-03-12 04:31

Publicity doesn't make it a bribe. Lots of people and organisations will provide goods and services in return for exposure or acknowledgement of the donation. Under 8s football usually have stuff donated in return for acknowledging the company that provided it - it's usually done as publicity, but that doesn't make it a bribe either. > It's like apprehended bias rather than actual bias. Again though, apprehended bias in what context? What are people supposed to reasonably suspect bias about here? That the police might be less likely to pull over someone in a BYD because they're driving one?

marcellouswp 2026-03-12 04:39

Football club is different. Police exercise state power. Context could be anything where donor potentially subject to possibility of police exercising police powers.

breno_mac_ 2026-03-12 04:43

It’s a community engagement vehicle, won’t be used in any frontline capacity, dealers loan these vehicles to various commands to roll out at community events

Car-face 2026-03-12 04:46

> Football club is different. Perhaps you could provide an example of the bias you believe could reasonably exist in this specific situation then, where a single vehicle is donated by BYD for use in community outreach activities, to the point you think it constitutes a bribe.

BorisButtplug 2026-03-12 04:51

Left leaning people are probably the least likely demographic to become cops.

Speedy-08 2026-03-12 05:19

Vicpol had a Model X join their fleet briefly in 2019, it definitely was the downtime that killed the idea of the car.

online-earnings101 2026-03-12 05:44

Is that a hippo

HonkyHam 2026-03-12 06:22

Seems pretty odd for a chinese manufacturer (or any company for that matter) to be sponsoring the police. The fuck is going on here?

HPRobloxCarsFansMore 2026-03-12 06:33

I’ve also seen one of them at BGC in the Philippines which is the security vehicle to catch the geng geng squatters. So on I am Filipino

tmccormick123 2026-03-12 06:35

Pretty comparable to Land cruiser prices and better comfort, space, towing and tbh probably fuel consumption

TTPP_rental_acc1 2026-03-12 06:49

ah we're in Australia theres no need to warmup the engine, just rip through it cold she'll be alright

Joel006 2026-03-12 07:58

I mean the same argument can be made for civilians who buy land cruisers and American trucks. “You don’t need a 79 series” or whatever it might be. Then you consider that caravans, trailers, horse floats, anything that can be towed, you name it, they’re all increasing in size and weight meaning your GVM/GCM is now at or beyond limit. Far too many people towing far beyond the vehicles limit and running on the “nah I’ve always done it” mentality.

jjbabes87 2026-03-12 08:17

You can just make out the words "Proudly sponsored by BYD", so yeah community engagement with a side of advertising 😉 https://preview.redd.it/h9c00zxmpkog1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afbf5813e1f34e61baa87db5754cdfcff1e3a967

vaudiction 2026-03-12 08:22

I've found after the demise of our domestic market, the vehicles the police department get are about supply. All highway patrol pursuit cars went to the BMW 530d a few years ago. It can do the job or sure, there's alot of vehicles that can, but that was the rig they could get alot of quickly. At Hyundai where I worked the Santa fe was used as a cop car, nice car, shit for cop use, but it's what the police department could get in large numbers at the time. Most divvy vans now are rangers, but also seen the Tasman being used as kia had surplus supplies. We see heaps of different rigs used now by the cops. Quality don't matter, so long as they can get them and use them today.

Nos_4r2 2026-03-12 08:25

Its a Chinese Branded car, its the only reason people are kicking up a stink about it. If it was a Ranger PHEV with 'Proudly Sponsored by Ford' on the side it wouldn't have been turned into a post on reddit. The way I see it, thats a $60,000 car that taxpayers didn't have to fund. If we want govenmernts lowering spending then we should be encouraging more automakers to donate vehicles like this.

notsocommonsense92 2026-03-12 09:41

This made me chuckle 😂

notsocommonsense92 2026-03-12 09:43

I can confirm they basically paid the full cost minus gst because they didn’t do a major fleet purchase 🫠

Specialist_Reality96 2026-03-12 10:26

TBH that makes sense most of the roadside assistance vehicles have massive battery banks in them for jump starting running tools compressors etc etc.

Turbidspeedie 2026-03-12 10:27

And you know this how? Why wouldn't dodge/Ford give them some at a lower cost as a sign of good faith to hopefully get more sales down the line?

notsocommonsense92 2026-03-12 10:31

Because they currently dont need to… they’re already on back order. Partner is a police officer as I mentioned earlier, I was curious if you were right because of the backorders … so asked her. She read your comments and had a little chuckle

ozy_e3_gt4 2026-03-12 11:28

Could be worse, nt has paddy wagon Kia tasmans. Imaging having a good night out and being forced into a Tasman

Gross

Fart_On_My_Dick_ 2026-03-12 16:42

Good to see our tax dollars paying for the cops to drive around in a $100-200k brand new Land Cruiser while most people can barely afford rent and groceries.

The couple of American trucks that I have seen in the police are 1. Mounted units (who do tow floats) and also Maritime who tow large boats.

"Proundly sponsored by BYD" - it's more a marketing vehicle than a patrol one I guess

Bchliu 2026-03-12 21:56

Yeah, it's a marketing thing. NSWPF has special cars which are used to promote their careers department to "lure" in kids to join the police force. This is just one of them and not used for active duties. They had a Stinger GT before as well which might still be currently used along with the older Commodore SS and Falcon FPV GT ones used for show purposes.

lord_sydd 2026-03-12 22:44

What in the animal farm is going on your dashboard

Kahuna808 2026-03-12 23:18

Hungry_Elephant_6104 2026-03-13 02:55

Qld highway patrol used to use f6 typhoons. Number plate was heat1 and heat2

CameronsTheName 2026-03-13 02:57

They had heaps of cool cars back in the day. I remember Impreza WRX' and Skyline's were a couple I can think of.

CreamyFettuccine 2026-03-13 03:15

Political beliefs often inform car purchases. Inner City electorates with strong green or progressive voting patterns have much higher adoption rates of EV vehicles. Normally this is because they function as a cultural marker for environmental values and have a reduced commuting distance.

spitfireonly 2026-03-13 03:30

Their backup plan to the oil problem

Fozzeneric 2026-03-13 03:40

Missed when HWPs used to drive falcons and commies.

Keiowolf 2026-03-13 03:50

Mounted police would probably need horse floats They likely have some command and control or protracted incident support trailers too. (I'm not police, am a different emergency service, but we have a variety of trailers for staff support and additional functions during major/prolonged incidents) Wouldn't be surprised if water police have trailers to move some of their boats over land if needed.

Arrowbreakrr 2026-03-13 04:01

I suppose they need something big but still fast

Top_Mortgage9097 2026-03-13 04:04

I just rented one of those for a week. Had so much fun driving it.

Significant_Koala_61 2026-03-13 04:06

Yeah I’d like one

Arrowbreakrr 2026-03-13 04:07

It’s a hybrid, it sits at idle fine - has a 1.5L turbo petrol generator to maintain the battery pack to at least 80% Great on the highway too, it accelerates hard Overtakes road trains like a dream - it’s very “oops I’m doing 160”

Arrowbreakrr 2026-03-13 04:08

Well backseat or close the cover

Local-Poet3517 2026-03-13 04:10

You must be new here mate. Qld cops are infamous for refusing to do things efficiently. Theyre still using paper rosters and using paper forms for admin. Its almost like theyre proud of being dumb cunts. When people talk about government waste, qld police is a shining example.

Local-Poet3517 2026-03-13 04:15

Because Ford dont care right now. Theyre booked out for yonks. And its not qld police policy to give a fuck about cost. In fact, its the opposite. The more they spend in one year, the more they get the next year. There is no oversight regulatory body with any teeth. They have no incentive to save. Because it would mean less funding. Its a use it or lose it system. Yes, you should be fucking pissed off.

Ok-Two-1685 2026-03-13 04:21

Tax pAyers dollars hard at work while country is in debt!!!!

jedburghofficial 2026-03-13 04:29

Different commands get all sorts of vehicles from time to time. The Hills have a new Amarok. I think it has come into its own since there's no default Aussie option. The HWP have been trialing electric vehicles too. https://eftm.com/2024/08/nsw-police-electric-car-test-highway-patrol-252822
