Normal vs EV winter tyres?

Runflats are hard compound rubber. They keep their shape after deflation. Winters are soft/super soft compound. If you're using runflats in winter in snowy/icey areas, it doesn't matter if you're an EV or ICE, you're gonna have a bad time. Runflats are only for summer or consistent +6⁰c weather, NOT for winter. (Side note, they're also loud AF!)

Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea. I chose those asy car doesn’t have a spare tire and the salesgiy recommended it strongly, saying they were the best winter tires they had. And they were the most expensive definitely. Almost 1000 bucks for the set. That’s really bad news, but good to know for the future. Many thanks! And in terms of EV vs ICE tires, does it make a big difference use ICE winter tires on EVs?

EV tyres are more expensive and are made to withstand the additional weight of an EV. ICE tyres aren't made to carry the load.

EVs tend to be heavy so you need tires that will handle the weight but this is a normal part of choosing tires, you need the correct dimensions and they need to be able to support whatever the weight of the car is.

I run SUV tires on the Atto3, built for the extra weight and cheaper than 'EV' tires

All good. I learnt about all this when I lived in Canada for a bit and how different compounds work. EV tyres sound like a scam if I'm honest. Your Atto 3 has a kerb weight of about 1600kg. A Honda CRV has the same weight. There's no special tyres for them.

Actually, run flats can be built with softer compounds and have a harder internal casing strength so they don't deform as easily when flat.

The Atto 3 weights the same as a 2015 BMW 3 Series 4 or a Nissan Leaf. Would you put SUV tires on a BMW 3?

My Dolphin Surf weights 1300kg, same as a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Accord. You don't need special "EV" tyres for that.
