De-influence me: spending 1.3M for PHEV upgrade BYD Sealion 5 / Geely EX5 EM-i

bobfreking | 2026-03-19 06:08 | 19 views

Planning to ditch my 10 year old diesel Everest to get a PHEV. Using the gas prices as a justification. I’d probably spend 11k for the loans monthly, to save 5k in diesel costs - assuming prices don’t roll back.

Wala. Hirap umisip ng reason. Bilhin mo na lang then pakabit ka solar panels

SouIskin 2026-03-19 06:21

Buy if you really want to upgrade, have the means (di need utangin) and not because of just the gas prices. Don’t buy if you need the space. Kasi mas maliit yung options mo vs yung size ng Everest

bobfreking 2026-03-19 06:24

Haven’t actually looked into solar panels! Worth it ba kumuha para lang sa car? (Mahal ata if i-solar everything sa bahay)

boykalbo777 2026-03-19 06:30

geely ex5 ugly af

sotopic 2026-03-19 06:33

The higher your electricity usage, the higher the ROI on Solar. If you are already averaging at 12kphp+ per month sa meralco bills mo, sulit na ang Solar. You also hedge yourself against future price increase sa Meralco

sotopic 2026-03-19 06:34

Only switch if plano mo na talaga mag palit ng sasakyan (even before the war). Don't decide na papaltan gawa lang ng diesel price.

MiddleAged_Man 2026-03-19 06:38

Sealion 6 ka na haha

SheepherderChoice637 2026-03-19 06:40

Kung bibili ka ng phev, make sure mkakapagpakabit ka ng wall charger sa house or else sayang yung benefits ng EV. Don't rely din sa mga free charger sa malls. Pipili ka at maguubos ng oras.

wetryitye 2026-03-19 06:42

Sayang ung 60k diacount sa ex5 haha

GroceryImmediate9581 2026-03-19 06:45

No need, PHEV din ako pero portable charger (2.2kw) lang gamit ko. more than enough :)

Charming-Drive-4679 2026-03-19 06:52

Amen! Solar panels are totally worth it. The initial investment could be expensive but in the long run it’s gonna be cheaper

Charming-Drive-4679 2026-03-19 06:54

BYD na! I hear more good reviews re BYD than Geely. OP Make sure your DP is not too low ha (at least 50%) otherwise the interest would be so damn high it’s like buying 2 cars. Banker here!

SheepherderChoice637 2026-03-19 06:57

Yep agree. Portable or wall charger will do as long as me charger ka sa bahay.

Glass_Carpet_5537 2026-03-19 06:59

D naman pumuputok breaker mo or nasusunog socket mo? Thats already 10A on a typical 40A household setup.

Ok_Stomach_6857 2026-03-19 07:12

Here's my take. Ditch hybrids altogether and get an EV instead. You end up saving more ₱₱₱, you get better performance, and the future capability of getting free "fuel" courtesy of solar.

Efficient_String2909 2026-03-19 07:13

Same thoughts. Kaya yung aken natatakot ako gamiti

yourshoetight 2026-03-19 07:21

Depende talaga sa usage mo. Pero sample computation: If 60L consumption mo per month at 100 pesos per liter: 1 month = 6,000 x 12 months = 72,000 yearly PMS = 30,000 average per year. Total of = 102,000 cost per year. 1.3M / 102,000 = 13 years worth of fueling + pms if gusto mo i keep yung everest mo. If phev naman, kapag cash mo binili or full upfront. BYD Sealion 5 = 1.3M Charging dock station at house = ranges 20k to 40k yung installation alone nito, enlighten me if may plug and play charger na si BYD. Battery replacement = roughly 250k to 300k after 8 years. Renewable energy or 7 kwp solar panels = roughly 300k to 350k the cost and installation of solar panels. Full charging - roughly 800-1,000 pesos added to your monthly meralco bill.(if walang 7kwp solar panels) PHEV PMS - roughly 5k to 15k a year? The estimates are not applicable to everyone. This is my own estimate lang and currenly owning 3 ICE cars. Medyo mahal pa sakin si PHEV or EV in terms of full upfront cost.

WarmLiquid30 2026-03-19 07:22

Pwede siguro magpa lagay ng dedicated na saksakan na may sariling breaker para sa peace of mind.

annabanana316 2026-03-19 07:28

pa kabit ka ng outlet with own breaker and ground din. shouldnt cost above ₱5k

ongamenight 2026-03-19 07:39

Paano ang tires hindi ba mabilis mag wear out kapag EV? Mas okay ba ang EV kaysa HEV? 🤔

taasbaba 2026-03-19 08:08

Nasa umaapak ng accelerator yung pag pudpod ng gulong

s0jk4 2026-03-19 08:09

Matagal ang pyesa pag mga major repair. Pwede kang bumili, pero gawing backup yung ICE. Which means, 2 car ime-maintain mo

taasbaba 2026-03-19 08:12

This. Get an EV tapos mura pa pms ng EV. Although I would only recommend getting an EV if you have a backup car

ongamenight 2026-03-19 08:16

I mean mabigat ang battery diba so that weight can wear out EV tires faster than sa ICE. Let's say same ang pag-apak mo sa ICE and EV, I can only imagine mas frequent pagpalit tires pag EV as compared to ICE. I don't have point of comparison since ICE lang meron ako. ☺️

woodencrafter 2026-03-19 08:20

I have a friend who bought the byd sealion 6. Her trunk door got smashed in a collision. Casa (byd greenfield) replaced it in only 10 days. Maintenance is only once a year so very cheap.

the-tall-samson 2026-03-19 08:31

Lol bat downvoted to? Take my upvote man.

peacekeeper05 2026-03-19 08:35

Decent range EVs are more expensive than a decent PHev. Installing solar para magmukhang “free” ang charging is also stupid and expensive. Parang yung matitipid mo eh wala rin dahil sa laki ng initial cost na nilabas mo. Charging infra has improved but still very poor. I love EVs just because it’s easier to repair and maintain but to say na mas “makakatipid” can be misleading. It’s not as simple as 1+1

Efficient_String2909 2026-03-19 08:42

Oo nga eh, may nga ready made ng extension sa lazada for EV portable chargers pero 2-3k hahah.

corb3n1k 2026-03-19 08:43

BYD Sealion 5 + Solar panel for both house and car yung plan namin i-invest ng wife ko considering both wfh kami pareho, so malakas consumption ng kuryente namin. we have an ICE sedan that we still want to keep. plan din namin ipasok sa grab yung BYD since sayang naman yung nai-store from solar panel everyday kung di magagamit yung BYD.

WinterSonata_ 2026-03-19 08:50

It will rollback soon. But only get it if you can charge at home.

s0jk4 2026-03-19 08:54

Di ganyan kwento ng ibang owner sa fb group page.

s0jk4 2026-03-19 08:56

Thanks, mga owner siguro sila. Just like other car brands, ayaw nila na makabasa ng negative sa purchase nila

Ok_Stomach_6857 2026-03-19 09:07

The Omoda E5 has a 430km range and is ₱1.35M. It is cheaper than the Sealion 6 by 200k. And for 200k, you can get a 3kW solar energy system which can cover up to ₱3k of your monthly MERALCO bill. My EV barely even uses half that amount per month for my 2.5hr worth of daily driving. It's plainly clear that you don't have an EV and don't have solar yet trying to speculate that it is "stupid". Welcome to the conversation, Dunning-Kruger.

iamjjdg 2026-03-19 09:10

SL6 owner here. Headlights and bumper took 1 month and a half to get ordered when i had to have it replaced due to an accident.. Is that long considering other brands?

peacekeeper05 2026-03-19 09:15

Again. A decent EV is more expensive than a decent PHev. Sabi na nga ba papasukan mo ko sa argument na any EV na lang bastat majustify mo yang point(less) mo. Para kang nagpasok ng mirage sa usapan ng honda city. And 430km range is NEDC. Real world is probably only around 300-350km. Welcome to my world, A tesla Model Y owner and a Byd Tang Dm-i owner. Suck it

Kartoffel_ 2026-03-19 09:16

Yes. Sakin sa Toyota, parts complete agad after 1 week pagkabayad ko ng participation fee - Hood, bumper, headlight replacement and fender pair. Then inabot ng 10 days yung actual repair. Meron pang kinailangan na idagdag na part na nasa likod ng bumper habang nasa casa na yung sasakyan ko kasi hindi nakita ng insurance agent habang iniinspect, for replacement din.

Ok_Stomach_6857 2026-03-19 09:24

I'm glad that you're enjoying your PHEV. But the 430km WLTP range (not NEDC) was already confirmed by both Malaysian and PH FB groups. Hope your disappointment with not getting solar doesn't dissuade you from EV's that are below your budget.

RegularStreet8938 2026-03-19 09:52

Di naman lahat pare pareho ng experience. Bobo lang?

woodencrafter 2026-03-19 09:58

Depends on the casa i guess but you can’t just generalize na matagal pyesa and repairs when there are a lot of customers who experience the opposite.

raju103 2026-03-19 09:59

Sana ganyan lahat ng casa

OrionPax1973 2026-03-19 09:59

I guess EV specific tires will “slow”down the wear rate

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 10:10

Get the Sealion 6 instead

s373n_w0rds 2026-03-19 10:24

I charge using the granny too. 5 hrs lng ang sl5. no need na pakabit ng wall charger. overkill na.bumili ako ng extension na may breaker at grounded na for 3k. 5 meters cya. i charge twice a week. friday and sunday. di naman umiinit or wla naman signs s outlet ng pagka sunog. as long as hindi same ng circuit s ref or other heavy duty na appliance oks lng. ung akin same circuit ng tv electric fan oks naman

jjriley007 2026-03-19 10:30

geely should not be an option may napatunayan ng yung byd for a short time palang sa reliability and almost walang major issues eh yung geely may napatunayan na .. sirain

s373n_w0rds 2026-03-19 10:39

may 3k na extension cord na nabibili na type a with breaker and grounding na. aksaya ng pera pa install. but sa sl5 i think nasa 10 to 20k lng pakabit. 25k if full ev. 13kw lng ang batter and only 9kw lng magagamit mo since mag eengage ung engine matically below 25%. 9kw is only about 100 something pesos per charge assuming lagi kang mag start sa 25 percent. Lfp batteries have a long lifespan. 3k to 4k cycles. thats 28 years if you charge twice a week. mas mauuna pa mabulok lahat ng parts bago mag degrade ang battery. watch teamdy. his sl6 was on 98.xx soc after a year. at that rate it will take a minimum of 15 yrs pra lang mag 80% soc battery nya. so dont be too sure na papalitan agad ang battery after 8 years. may atto 3 taxi na 300k kms na mileage sa brazil and the battery is still okay pms is 11 to 12k per year or 56k in 5 years.

Ok_Economist8055 2026-03-19 10:39

The math on PHEVs can be tricky tbh. You're looking at 6k net increase monthly (11k loan vs 5k fuel savings) which is 72k annually just for the privilege of driving electric sometimes. With a 10 year old Everest, you're probably looking at maybe 200-300k trade-in value? So you'd be financing most of that 1.3M. Even if diesel stays high, you'd need to drive A LOT to make those numbers work in your favor. Might be worth running the actual numbers on your monthly mileage and seeing how often you'd actually be running on electric vs hybrid mode. PHEVs are great but the financial justification usually only works if you're doing mostly short city trips where you can stay in EV mode most of the time.

L_Dawg412 2026-03-19 10:41

Not sure if the Sealion 5 comes with a wall socket charger, but the Sealion 6 does. You don’t really need to charge it anyway, running it as a hybrid cut my fuel costs by two-thirds. PMS on these cars is once a year, less than 10K.

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 10:48

BYD do have portable chargers Battery replacement? That's not needed.

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 10:51

It costs twice as much though. Seal 5 vs Model 3 for example. Less than 1M vs 1.9M. Edit: Acceleration (0-100KPH) : 7.9s/7.3s vs 6.2s There's the Seal Performance also. 2.5M (cheaper with discounts). 3.8s.

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 11:15

Apparently it's just around 20% more wear

Ok_Stomach_6857 2026-03-19 11:54

There are other EV's not named Tesla or BYD but are just as good and under 1.4M. 😉

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 11:57

With acceleration close to the Model 3's 6.2 second 0-100?

Ok-Goat2200 2026-03-19 12:43

Xi thanks you for your support

PlayfulMud9228 2026-03-19 12:45

Batteries are disposable so yes it's very much needed. 8 years more or less is a believable estimate. You can't trust their claims, since the Philippines have a different weather so we don't know how the unit will degrade.

PlayfulMud9228 2026-03-19 12:46

The hell do you need that features for though?

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 12:49

Well if I'll upgrade I want tangible upgrades. I won't be satisfied with a sidegrade.

RespiratoryCenter911 2026-03-19 13:05

go mo na yan!!!. tas balitaan mo kame

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 13:45

8 years is the warranty. It's reasonable that it'll last longer than that. Battery tech is much more advanced today compared to years ago.

PlayfulMud9228 2026-03-19 14:17

Well good luck with that. Its not as advance as you might think. I will try EV once i fully see them lasting 10 years here in the Philippines.

AmIWeirdVegtable 2026-03-19 15:01

Geely!

Charming-Drive-4679 2026-03-19 17:36

This is such a good advice. I ran the numbers on my current 6 year old mitsubishi xpander vs buying an HEV/EV. Factoring the cost of gas, battery replacement, insurance, service/repairs, utilizing my current car is still cheaper than buying a new HEV car despite the increase in gas prices.

_TheEndGame 2026-03-19 17:39

Yeah I'm not trying to convince you. Just correcting some misinformation.

kikaykillerrr082187 2026-03-19 19:42

Pangalan BYD build your dreams. Enough na yan para wag ka bumili

GroceryImmediate9581 2026-03-19 20:26

Gamit kung outlet ung abang para sa aircon.

alikabok 2026-03-19 22:48

I have the Sealion 5. Here are the things that owners seems not to like about it. \- Horn delay. This is most of BYD models naman. BYD only fixed Sealion 6 \- No Spare tire. This is normal to other EVs? \- Air from outside is going inside kahit naka circulate na yung AC. \- Slow charging. If im not mistakem, 3.5KW lang ata ang max charging ng Sealion 5. I dont mind since I usually charge overnight naman. \- Small screen (10 inch) small for BYD but big compared to other brands. \- Some people are have engine vibration on the 1st 1K km when EV is shifting to HEV automatically. Mawawala naman after ng 1st PMS. Here is what I like naman. \- Torque! Grabe ang hatak, as in! hindi ka mauubusan \- No coding. \- Quiet ride, as in wala ka marining inside. No vibration etc. Overall, no complaints naman for me. Ofcourse, isipin mo pa din na this is a China car and there are a lot of uncertainties about it. I went for BYD as this is the most selling one, hopefully parts/support is better as mas madami ang nabenta nila. Would i recommend as a primary car yes. Pero have a backup car pa din as I have said, they still have a lot to prove. Few things people might ask. Sabi ni Chatgpt 1 full charge of the battery 70km range is around 200PHP or less. It can handle naman office and home balikan for me and natitira pa 50%. This is where you save money specially now mejo mataas na ang gas prices.

Beginning_Meringue97 2026-03-19 23:29

The car brand has been one of the best-selling cars in Europe, Australia, Africa, and even South America.

s0jk4 2026-03-20 00:54
