Looking for ev car for uber. Please advise

Fun_Reason0345 | 2026-03-19 23:26 | 10 views

I am planning to buy a car for uber. Please recommend an ev in $45K budget. I test drive BYD atto 2. It looks good but the boot space is only 400L. If you own an EV for uber driving. What's your experience from cost benefit, maintenance and comfort? Thank you for reading my post.

How many kms would you do every day?

Weekdays 200Km, Weekend 300 to 400Km.

I see a lot of Uber drivers using Tesla M3. Price is come down a lot for second hand stuff, long range and the driving features seem useful when doing a lot of driving Atto 2 would be too small, but Atto 3 would be worth a look

I am doing uber eats part time. Thinking to move to Uber.

I'd go for an ioniq 5. Lots of space, fast charging, vastly superior passenger comfort and rear leg room.

Other than its unproven safety record the Dong Feng Vigo is pretty good for leg room and a big boot in a smaller 'SUV'. $38k new with 8 years roadside and warranty.

I take a lot of ubers for work - for example ive been in 8 different ubers over the last 2 days. Pretty much everyone has an atto 3, there's a couple of id4s and the occasional model 3/y, but the byd drivers all seem really happy with their purchase based on my chats with them.

Aquas get used for Uber. As a passenger I'd be happy with an Atto 2

Was going to suggest the Niro Plus (literally designed for taxi / ridehail use), and BYD E6 for well under your budget, but see there are no roadworthy examples left on trademe. Read through the Uber list, and decide if you want to be eligible for Big boot, & Comfort. [https://www.uber.com/nz/en/eligible-vehicles/?city=auckland](https://www.uber.com/nz/en/eligible-vehicles/?city=auckland) If you just want to do UberX you will be competing with aqua's, so just get something cheap. BYD dolphin premium packs more range than the atto 2, will have cheaper tires, and you can get a two year old on for $32k. [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/byd/dolphin/listing/5621087316](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/byd/dolphin/listing/5621087316) Potentially could get something like a model 3 if you wanted a couple of years of comfort eligibility: [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/tesla/model-3/listing/5841747900](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/tesla/model-3/listing/5841747900) Try get something with a LFP battery, and you will want to have the ablity to charge at home if you are using an EV for uber.

I love the Ioniq 5, but bit of a risk using one of them for your living given the ICCU issue seems still unresolved.

How do the economics work out? I'm trying to picture how many rides to pay for a $45k car?
