What’s the next step after a Leaf?

Impossible_Gap_8277 | 2026-03-18 21:06 | 14 views

We’ve got a 2014 Leaf. Love it. It fits 3 car seats and it’s cool to drive. It has 100km range, which is fine for around town and 95% of my driving. We have solar at home too. We are thinking of trading our ICE in for a second EV that has longer range and can tow a trailer. I’ve driven a BYD ATTO 2 and hated it. Not keen to spend lots of money. I’d love a Kia EV 9 but not in the budget. Maybe under $40,000. Obviously not buying brand new. Any recommendations?

Used Model Y RWD. Heaps of space, within your budget, and decent range & performance.

RobDickinson 2026-03-18 21:34

$40k used gets you a lot of options, it gets you some NEW options like the Dongfeng Vigo, byd Dolphin, couple $k more gets you into leapmotor B10, Jaecoo J5 etc teritory so I assume a bunch of mid/high $40k SUV evs would have ex demo/deals ones under 40k etc [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/omoda/e5/listing/5453406796](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/omoda/e5/listing/5453406796) [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/leapmotor/b10/listing/5803429228](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/leapmotor/b10/listing/5803429228) [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/geely/ex5/listing/5669295592](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/geely/ex5/listing/5669295592) [https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/dongfeng/vigo/listing/5766615203](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/dongfeng/vigo/listing/5766615203)

Stop supporting a fascist!

Moist-Shame-9106 2026-03-18 21:59

If you’re willing to spend exactly or just a bit over $40k you could look at the Ioniq5 - it fits your requirements and is a great car!

Moist-Scientist32 2026-03-18 22:00

You realise that since it’s a second hand purchase, no more money gets sent to Elmo. So you can still benefit from the vehicle based on its own merits and also not support old mate.

L3P3ch3 2026-03-18 22:02

Similar question asked a 5 months ago, and someone posted - "Polestar 2 LRSM for $29,210. 540km of WLTP range". No experience, but its a Volvo brand (reliability) seems to have a good overall reputation. Plenty of second hand reviews on YT. Otherwise, noting your like of the Kia, the Kia EV6, second hand gets close to that budget. Not Tesla. We dont need to support fascists.

Azurik80 2026-03-18 22:02

We're about to pull the trigger on an Omoda E5 for under 40k new from Winger. Very good spec and range for the price.

Fragluton 2026-03-18 22:28

I'd consider Tesla options as they are a proven car. Will tow a trailer no worries and will have that extra range. Go scope out a model 3 and model Y and see how they might work for three car seats. I'm amazed you get three in a LEAF, I have two in mine and they aren't small but there is no way i'd get a third in haha. I'd also look at Kia Niro, a bit bigger inside than the Kona. I'd pick any of the above options over something without a proven history, be it car reliability and workshop support if anything needs fixing.

Fragluton 2026-03-18 22:29

Yeah this is a solid option.

thelastestgunslinger 2026-03-18 22:29

People don’t want to hear that the brand they love is run by a white suprematist, even when it’s true.

Fragluton 2026-03-18 22:30

You should search for that model in this sub.

dissss0 2026-03-18 22:31

Depends on what you disliked about the Atto 2 really. I have a 2017 Ioniq and a 2023 Niro - I'm very happy with both vehicles but the Ioniq has no tow rating, and the Niro has a very low unbraked rating so neither would tick all your boxes.

Exact-Catch6890 2026-03-18 22:38

Sorry to hijack your thread but we're in a similar situation (old leaf 100km range) and aren't yet ready to trade in the hybrid. However, do you have a dedicated car charger and was it worth it to divert excess solar and utilize cheaper electricity fee times? We're thinking of getting one as we're now using the Leaf as much as possible with petrol learning to count beyond 3.

DoughnutRadiant6049 2026-03-18 22:57

Everyone should stop buying from facists. There are so many options now available

moratnz 2026-03-18 23:03

We have one and are pretty happy with it

nzkieran 2026-03-18 23:27

PHEV? Best of both worlds. Do all the driving you can electric and then petrol for those longer trips

First_Regret_1 2026-03-18 23:31

Poleatar 2s can be found for under 40k.

zl3ag 2026-03-18 23:31

Take this puppy for a test drive. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/listing/5834954804

deftassent2 2026-03-18 23:42

Isn't the 2019 just fraught with issues? Like crap infotainment system, bad battery cells (LG, same issues as etron?) Etc..

Cregkly 2026-03-18 23:51

Why take a fully electric car and add an ice that still needs to be maintained. IMHO it just removes one of the major benefits of going electric.

Mouldtastesgood 2026-03-18 23:53

Does buying second hand really count as supporting Musk?

DoughnutRadiant6049 2026-03-18 23:58

I guess that's up to the individual but in my opinion it is

nzkieran 2026-03-19 00:13

Some people still suffer range anxiety 🤷‍♂️ I guess you could be like that Tesla in Aus that made the news a while back for having a diesel generator in the trunk connected to the charging port

zl3ag 2026-03-19 00:14

The centre console is "sluggish". I use a USB stick full of mp3's and voice recognition to navigate it, along with FM radio. I think the battery issue was one poorly designed busbar connection that needed replacing. Would be good for someone in the know to confirm.

hkdrvr 2026-03-19 00:30

3 child car seats in a LEAF? How? This is the main reason we are needing to buy a larger EV

sakura-peachy 2026-03-19 00:41

There's like 30 different car models that should be available under $40k. Hyundai Kona or Kia Niro. Atto 3, not 2. MG4 and MG ZS. Peugeot e2008. Hyundai Ioniq, the newer ones. Also the Ioniq 5. Cupra Born. Ford Mach-E. VW ID 4 or 5. My pick would be the Niro.

thelastestgunslinger 2026-03-19 00:50

It’s a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, you aren’t giving one your money, directly. On the other, you’re ensuring there’s a market for secondhand cars, which increases their lifetime value, and you’re driving a vehicle that nobody knows is secondhand, giving free advertising, and letting others know it’s ok to buy from one. If you can mitigate the latter issues, I don’t see any issue… other than buying parts when something needs to be repaired, of course.

Willuknight 2026-03-19 01:05

You ever heard of VW? BMW?

Willuknight 2026-03-19 01:06

I tow a trailer to Auckland regularly with my 40kw leaf. Getting more annoying now so I'm trading up to a Tesla soon, any of the Tesla's will do the job, bu if you want more space, a Y or an S is the way to go.

thelastestgunslinger 2026-03-19 01:11

Or Hugo Boss? Are they *still* run by white suprematists?

richms 2026-03-19 01:53

Only makes sense while they get half price RUCs on them. Once that is over they will be a worse choice.

Nervous_Bill_6051 2026-03-19 02:09

We still have our 2014 leaf which is OK but looking at mg s5 as replacement of petrol

Willuknight 2026-03-19 02:59

I'd rather support a fuck like Musk who built an all electric car compnay that makes good cars than a company like Toyota who has set EV adoption back decades.

nzkieran 2026-03-19 03:17

But isn't RUC going to hit every car soon?

richms 2026-03-19 03:20

Yes then carrying around the petrol engine becomes pointless

DoughnutRadiant6049 2026-03-19 03:22

Yeah I worked for Volkswagen. They might be cheating when it's comes to environmental issues but I wouldn't call them facists

thelastestgunslinger 2026-03-19 03:30

They good news is you don’t have to support either.

nzkieran 2026-03-19 03:48

Well not really if you still do a lot of driving. Plenty of people drive between towns on the daily. And electricity prices are a little unstable atm with a high likelihood of increasing. I know you could set up your own solar array but that has it's own set of challenges. Good thing there's a diverse range of options for a diverse range of uses

Relative_Drop3216 2026-03-19 04:18

Used tesla model y or 3 2023

Greedy-Mind-7624 2026-03-19 04:48

So everyone involved in building a Tesla is a fascist? Didn't know that, I always come to Reddit to be informed.

Greedy-Mind-7624 2026-03-19 04:51

L3P3ch3 has it bad. Normally we would say keep on taking the tablets, but you need to consider asking your psychiatrist for a different medication.

kiwiupnorth 2026-03-19 05:15

Mg4 ? Aside from a couple of minor gripes (lane keep assist, one fault covered under warranty) ive loved mine

Careless-Stable6563 2026-03-19 05:57

2019 leaf :)

Sniperizer 2026-03-19 05:58

We are on the same boat with the Polestar after trying a couple of others with the same spec. Trying to save some dough for it as we don’t want to get into finance. Hopefully later this year.

Careless-Stable6563 2026-03-19 06:02

Phev have much shorter range and then when we run out of fuel you wont be able to get around much. Ev + solar to future proof

Kingoflumbridge123 2026-03-19 06:53

lets see some evidence to support that last fallacious statement.

Kingoflumbridge123 2026-03-19 06:55

this 100%. Guy is an absolute cooker

nzswedespeed 2026-03-19 07:38

Geely EX5? Over $40k but close. Brand new with 7-8 year warranty Geely own Volvo / polestar/ lotus / Zeekr so some serious brands in their stable

the_pretender_nz 2026-03-19 08:21

I am currently driving an MG ZS EV and it’s… not great. I know that the open road is not the most efficient place for an EV, but I recently had to do a 180km road trip and *barely* made it - driving in eco mode, air con off, no hills to really speak of. Supposedly 300km+ range!

eggheadgirl 2026-03-19 09:06

Which year? The more recent models have better range.

the_pretender_nz 2026-03-19 09:15

2022

Lasereyes64 2026-03-19 09:19

Diono Radian x 3

sakura-peachy 2026-03-19 10:12

My flatmate has one and it's pretty average. Poor quality fit and finish. Lots of wear on buttons and fabric for a car so new. And yeah poor real world range. Has been reliable though. No software issues and no hardware issues. Just a bit meh. But other brands with better fit and finish have had some pretty public reliability issues, namely Hyundai with the ICCU.

GoGreen-5854 2026-03-19 13:46

That reason is not good enough to support Musk. Disgusting and ignorant.

AndNikMinute 2026-03-19 17:22

Range anxiety is a thing of the past. There are plenty of EVs that have a range of 400 km or more. E: spelling

Zealousideal-King757 2026-03-19 19:05

Here‘s a good website that might help with tow rating and price, and then you could look at second hand markets to see if you can get one in your price range. [https://evdb.nz/l/tow](https://evdb.nz/l/tow)

Willuknight 2026-03-19 19:58

You realise that climate change is more of an existential threat than racism right? Show me a car company that makes better EVs than Tesla and isn't morally compromised.

GoGreen-5854 2026-03-19 20:15

Personally I would rather take a less deluxe car if it meant I wasn't supporting a homophobic, racist fascist. Yes climate change is an existential threat, and while Tesla might make better EVs, it gets to a point where you are buying for your own comfort, rather than the good of the world in general.

miljack 2026-03-19 21:18

Any more right? Right?!?!
