$40k used gets you a lot of options, it gets you some NEW options like the Dongfeng Vigo, byd Dolphin, couple $k more gets you into leapmotor B10, Jaecoo J5 etc teritory so I assume a bunch of mid/high $40k SUV evs would have ex demo/deals ones under 40k etc

If you’re willing to spend exactly or just a bit over $40k you could look at the Ioniq5 - it fits your requirements and is a great car!

You realise that since it’s a second hand purchase, no more money gets sent to Elmo.
So you can still benefit from the vehicle based on its own merits and also not support old mate.

Similar question asked a 5 months ago, and someone posted - "Polestar 2 LRSM for $29,210. 540km of WLTP range". No experience, but its a Volvo brand (reliability) seems to have a good overall reputation. Plenty of second hand reviews on YT.
Otherwise, noting your like of the Kia, the Kia EV6, second hand gets close to that budget.
Not Tesla. We dont need to support fascists.

We're about to pull the trigger on an Omoda E5 for under 40k new from Winger. Very good spec and range for the price.

I'd consider Tesla options as they are a proven car. Will tow a trailer no worries and will have that extra range. Go scope out a model 3 and model Y and see how they might work for three car seats. I'm amazed you get three in a LEAF, I have two in mine and they aren't small but there is no way i'd get a third in haha. I'd also look at Kia Niro, a bit bigger inside than the Kona. I'd pick any of the above options over something without a proven history, be it car reliability and workshop support if anything needs fixing.

Yeah this is a solid option.

Depends on what you disliked about the Atto 2 really.
I have a 2017 Ioniq and a 2023 Niro - I'm very happy with both vehicles but the Ioniq has no tow rating, and the Niro has a very low unbraked rating so neither would tick all your boxes.

Sorry to hijack your thread but we're in a similar situation (old leaf 100km range) and aren't yet ready to trade in the hybrid.
However, do you have a dedicated car charger and was it worth it to divert excess solar and utilize cheaper electricity fee times?
We're thinking of getting one as we're now using the Leaf as much as possible with petrol learning to count beyond 3.

Why take a fully electric car and add an ice that still needs to be maintained. IMHO it just removes one of the major benefits of going electric.

I guess you could be like that Tesla in Aus that made the news a while back for having a diesel generator in the trunk connected to the charging port

The centre console is "sluggish". I use a USB stick full of mp3's and voice recognition to navigate it, along with FM radio.
I think the battery issue was one poorly designed busbar connection that needed replacing. Would be good for someone in the know to confirm.

3 child car seats in a LEAF? How? This is the main reason we are needing to buy a larger EV

There's like 30 different car models that should be available under $40k. Hyundai Kona or Kia Niro. Atto 3, not 2. MG4 and MG ZS. Peugeot e2008. Hyundai Ioniq, the newer ones. Also the Ioniq 5. Cupra Born. Ford Mach-E. VW ID 4 or 5. My pick would be the Niro.

It’s a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, you aren’t giving one your money, directly. On the other, you’re ensuring there’s a market for secondhand cars, which increases their lifetime value, and you’re driving a vehicle that nobody knows is secondhand, giving free advertising, and letting others know it’s ok to buy from one.
If you can mitigate the latter issues, I don’t see any issue… other than buying parts when something needs to be repaired, of course.

I tow a trailer to Auckland regularly with my 40kw leaf. Getting more annoying now so I'm trading up to a Tesla soon, any of the Tesla's will do the job, bu if you want more space, a Y or an S is the way to go.

Well not really if you still do a lot of driving. Plenty of people drive between towns on the daily.
And electricity prices are a little unstable atm with a high likelihood of increasing.
I know you could set up your own solar array but that has it's own set of challenges.
Good thing there's a diverse range of options for a diverse range of uses

I am currently driving an MG ZS EV and it’s… not great. I know that the open road is not the most efficient place for an EV, but I recently had to do a 180km road trip and *barely* made it - driving in eco mode, air con off, no hills to really speak of.
Supposedly 300km+ range!

My flatmate has one and it's pretty average. Poor quality fit and finish. Lots of wear on buttons and fabric for a car so new. And yeah poor real world range. Has been reliable though. No software issues and no hardware issues. Just a bit meh. But other brands with better fit and finish have had some pretty public reliability issues, namely Hyundai with the ICCU.

Personally I would rather take a less deluxe car if it meant I wasn't supporting a homophobic, racist fascist. Yes climate change is an existential threat, and while Tesla might make better EVs, it gets to a point where you are buying for your own comfort, rather than the good of the world in general.
