We totally underestimate China manufacturing, it's shock the world

pantytearer | 2026-03-19 14:48 | 270 views

I'm German, been working in machining for ten years, like a handcraft mechanic. Last month I go China, first stay Shanghai two weeks, then go Yiwu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, visit Huaqiangbei, before after I see maybe tens of factory, big and small, really open my eyes. Before people always say "Made in China" = bad quality, but truth is not like that. Almost all famous brand is made in China now. LV, Hermès these luxury, their OEM is in China, Putian factory can make exactly same quality, only like 50 dollar. Same quality Yeezy, no brand version, 20 dollar in China. BYD electric car is pretty good, only 15000 dollar. Philips and Braun shaver, all made by one Chinese OEM factory, same factory also make for small brand like MANSPOT, quality almost same, price only 1/10 of international brand. Swiss army knife those brand also basically made in China, Honda, WD many things also China made, even this phone in my hand for review is China made. Made in China is having second global shockwave, but most people in our industry still use it to insinuate bad quality, this is pure selection bias, thinking inertia. Sometime I really don't understand, how people in manufacturing can be so igorance and reluctance about China made. Now good quality and cheap China products flood into all industrial country, we totally no way to stop. At the end, it's because our ignorance and prejudice. Really need stop treat "Made in China" as synonym for cheap crap.

This, 100%. The only reason the myth of "cheap Chinese crap" persists is so hate based political parties can use it to try and attack free trade. Like whats going on right now.

dmrlsn 2026-03-19 15:07

a lot of the machining they do in china just wouldn't be possible in europe/usa. and even if they tried, the quality would be way worse. it's not the china it used to be

expendable117 2026-03-19 15:10

Just outdated. Folks still snag on cheap crap from 20 years ago as China was ramping up.

expendable117 2026-03-19 15:11

Folks still linger on outdated 20 year ago. The lingering affect of cheap crap from 20 years ago latches on even till today. Most of the tech patent in China is heavily on manufacturing improvement. They are top of the line these days.

One_Study52 2026-03-19 15:12

I’ve been to China and I’ve sourced from China. China can absolutely beat American quality manufacturers when it wants to. It’s more efficient and high quality. The problem I have found is consistency. They don’t always have the culture of keeping up the high quality. We buy stuff from them and then a few years in they decide to switch to cheaper components without telling us. They replace dyes with different ones to save money. They start to cut corners. So they can do better than us, but they don’t seem to have the legal systems to ensure they do better.

TipAfraid4755 2026-03-19 15:16

Yup. Just take a look at political subs on Reddit. They still think China is the 1960s communist red menace wearing gray mao jackets and travelling on bicycles

LasyKuuga 2026-03-19 15:17

Ppl just racist tbh The country that’s been the world’s factory for decades is obviously gonna be good at it Temu stuff is low quality because you’re paying Temu prices

baycenters 2026-03-19 15:19

I've seen big improvements in consistency over the past 27 years, but I agree with your statement.

sirlost33 2026-03-19 15:25

That’s because US companies sell the cheap crap to American consumers to protect their profit margins.

pantiesdrawer 2026-03-19 15:25

If it required a physical visit for you to finally recognize something that has been plainly obvious for quite some time now, and if you think the underestimation is only in the area of manufacturing, then you (and very likely the rest of the non-Asian world) continue to underestimate them.

titsmuhgeee 2026-03-19 15:27

I don't think most people associate Chinese manufacturing with low quality. People associate low quality with **cheap** manufacturing, no matter where it was made. China used to own that market, but now that's shared by other Asian markets as China moved to higher quality and higher cost.

New_Ambassador2442 2026-03-19 15:30

lol cheap Chinese crap is real

corporaterebel 2026-03-19 15:35

Dood, the Ivy League Elites decided that globalism was good and that nobody really likes factory jobs. So the US (and EU) would just do the fun high paying jobs and leave China to the machine shop floor for the world. Everybody wins! Westerners do creative management and "learn to code". And the East gets crummy factory jobs. The US/EU gave up their hard won leads for FREE. Gave up IP and handed over factories. I had a family member that would survey US factories, spec a landing site in China, pack up the entire factory in containers, and, voila, 10,000 Americans out of work. China gets 20,000 jobs at 1/5 the cost. The C-suite and stockholders win (short term, but 20 years is a long time for most people). Listen to Freakonomics from 2017 [https://freakonomics.com/podcast/did-china-eat-americas-jobs/](https://freakonomics.com/podcast/did-china-eat-americas-jobs/)

4cardroyal 2026-03-19 15:38

I used to sell auto parts. One time a customer called up looking for a radiator and said "I don't want any of that cheap Chinese crap".... I explained to him "Its all made in China. Some of it is crap and some of it is OEM quality... and anyway good luck finding a USA made radiator; there are none"

CheekyClapper5 2026-03-19 15:38

You can't convince me that the dirt cheap Chinese clothes or endless trash my wife buys on Temu is quality

grindleetcodenonstop 2026-03-19 15:42

Doesn't every company do that? Pretty sure enshittification is practiced by American companies too.

Capt-Crap1corn 2026-03-19 15:42

I think they do in the states. I can't speak for everyone though.

fotren 2026-03-19 15:43

It’s known, at least in smart circles, that china gives what you pay for. You can buy shit in china, but also quality. Traditionally who chose Chinese products used to focus on price. The inertia is not giving a chance to the Chinese companies who ask for somewhat more than others, their quality usually much better.

Survive1014 2026-03-19 15:44

Most fast fashion actually doesnt come from China. [Most of it comes from Indonesia and African countries. ](https://www.britannica.com/art/fast-fashion)

The most capitalist communists you have ever met.

FryForFriRice 2026-03-19 15:47

Hey, I don't mind a suit like that and be a powerhouse

GrimAccountant 2026-03-19 15:48

Of course it isn't, but it's not being sold on quality but rather on being cheap. Occasionally you'll get decent quality as a bonus, but that's not what they're known for.

rollingron 2026-03-19 15:49

Yes, but it's easier to have site visits and QC checks that can be rapidly returned to production if production is more local. Seeing something after it ships over an ocean can create a lag time that impacts a lot of units. Oftentimes, you'll see companies employ an agent in Asia to handle this, but that relationship directly affects the output. It's not impossible to have good consistency, just harder.

PigMannSweg 2026-03-19 15:49

People in the US definitely still do, it's part of the culture. China is synonymous with cheap. There are tons of cheap stuff with that "made in china" tag/sticker. "made in america" is a sign of pride. We're in for a rude awakening tho

snyderman3000 2026-03-19 15:49

Your English reads way more like a Chinese person attempting English than a German attempting English.

real_bro 2026-03-19 15:51

Yes just wait until private equity buys up your favorite brand.

Sea_Entrepreneur6204 2026-03-19 15:51

I think a lot of Western prejudice lies behind this. In North America people still rely on American cars - where in many parts of the world American made is synonymous with expensive and unreliable. European manufacturing used to mean good but expensive - often now its just expensive. Going beyond manufacturing even Management though we see the move happening slowly here. Westerners thought Asians arent creative, Western management is best....and we're slowly seeing its actually replaceable with often cheaper and equal if not better quality across Asia. Mind you the bias is still there that a C suite of westerners is probably better than one of Asians but the reality doesnt match this.

LegoRedBrick 2026-03-19 15:51

I think the anti-China sentiment mainly stems from globalization fears going back decades. People believe outsourcing ruined the job market for skilled labor. They’d rather blame China than Wall Street, the ones who actually cannibalized and sold off domestic manufacturing. Other than the occasional “plastic” product that doesn’t last because it costs $5 I don’t think China makes low-quality anything. The product would be the same quality if made in US except the cost of labor would be exponentially higher. That’s the only difference.

rollingron 2026-03-19 15:53

Happens every time….

GrimAccountant 2026-03-19 15:54

I would say they have a wide spectrum in terms of quality. Yeah, there's cheaply made crap for things that aren't expected to last long. There's some higher end items if you're willing to pay for quality. And there's a wide middle of pretty good for a decent price. Nabbed a little mini pc years back that's been a solid home server. Top of the line? Nope. Reliable years on under constant use? So far. The power of good enough is seriously underestimated.

LastEconPoet 2026-03-19 15:55

Rage post. The poster is not German. I’m German and our English doesn’t sound that shitty. This is obviously a Chinese person trying to be German. What a weird world we live in.

rollingron 2026-03-19 15:56

You can outsource production, and that company should have its own QC. But if you are outsourcing your own QC on something where precision matters to you, you are doomed to fail.

Appropriate-Claim385 2026-03-19 15:56

China is ahead of the world in just about every important scientific and technology category. The West is arguing and fighting about religion and ideology while China speeds ahead. However, they still have a repressive regime and U.S. billionaires want the same type of government for us. [The Plot Against America](https://theplotagainstamerica.com/) * *They're not hiding it anymore.* * *A network of billionaires is openly calling for the end of democracy—in their own words, in public, on the record. This site documents their statements, investments, and connections. Every quote is cited.*

DorkSideOfCryo 2026-03-19 16:00

How are they at English grammar?

HotIntroduction8049 2026-03-19 16:02

I have bought some cheap Chinese machinery compared to big brand names. Less stringent QC but for what I need, its very cost effective. And you are right, there is brand pricing, high QC, low QC prob all made in the same plant.

woopwoopscuttle 2026-03-19 16:06

Or it’s tankies who think because they’re geopolitical opponents of the US that China is a morally superior egalitarian country and you, know, not an authoritarian state with their own genocides and corruption.

InnerWrathChild 2026-03-19 16:10

We started sending it their way on the 80s. Now they reap the benefits while we slide.

Joeyfingis 2026-03-19 16:11

That jumped out to me soooo hard. This is 100% either AI that got confused since the subject matter was china and went with a chinese accent, or this person is chinese pretending to be german. The grammar is chinese english not german english. I know a lot of germans and chinese, I hear both flavors of english frequently. It was jarring to start out thinking narrator is german and then just have the lingo not fit at all.

Joeyfingis 2026-03-19 16:12

This was 100% written by a chinese speaker, or AI that got confused about which "accent" to use.

Joeyfingis 2026-03-19 16:13

For real. This is so obviously chinese-flavored english. OP is definitely not german, unless they grew up in China and only recently moved to Germany.

kostac600 2026-03-19 16:14

Japan had the bad rap decades ago. A plant might order 1000 widgets from Japan with 96% acceptance requirement and they might 960 pieces on a palate and 40 defective peices in a small box. That’s what they ordered.

Joeyfingis 2026-03-19 16:14

Yeah all these points stand for sure. It's really jarring how obvious it is that OP is chinese not german though. Weird post. The grammar is not how germans speak in english and is so clearly how chinese people speak english.

milkcarton232 2026-03-19 16:20

While I don't disagree on your premise that china is good at manufacturing, hermes specifically does not mass produce their main products and they are not made in a factory in China

libertinecouple 2026-03-19 16:23

I don’t doubt the content of your claims. However, i do not believe you are german at all. The consistency of the linguistic errors in your post are not ones that someone from such a similar language to English would ever make as there are german analogs. This is from a native speaker of a language that is eastern asian where the combinations of grammar is replaced by tonality.

scormegatron 2026-03-19 16:26

Yeah, surprised I had to scroll so far to see this called out.

tenchichrono 2026-03-19 16:28

People are retarded. You get what you pay for is usually true.

Tamarahskincare 2026-03-19 16:48

This is key, the manufacturing owners always want to make more money for themselves. You have to actively audit and do checks on their raw material suppliers. This is also easier if you know someone who can speak chinese and has direct links to the manufactuer owners wechat line. You need to pressure them.

chiaboy 2026-03-19 16:48

Apple seems to have it dialed in

nplbmf 2026-03-19 16:54

Yeah…the entire world is racist. Except you.

stevenip 2026-03-19 16:59

Stuff isn't bad because it's made in China, it's bad because we are asking China to make bad stuff. If you paid them enough to make good stuff, they would make good stuff.

Vast_Orange6629 2026-03-19 17:03

low salaries and low cost of living coupled with devalued yuan. It is unfair competition.

kaiser-pm 2026-03-19 17:10

I am German and I thought this 💯. Nothing against "Made in China", but the sloppiness of this blunt attempt to influence the public discourse is actually not helping to improve the brand 😅

rpatel1228 2026-03-19 17:14

it’s shock the world

PassengerStreet8791 2026-03-19 17:16

Ok Chinese man. Your WeChat translator crapped out on you.

ddongpoo 2026-03-19 17:17

Exceptionalism is a lie our countries like to tell to keep us believe "us good, they bad". Too bad, because if we were honest about our faults and copied models from countries who have strengths, we'd be much better off. Look at Korea's food waste disposal program... every single country should be following.

titsmuhgeee 2026-03-19 17:59

I would say most are aware that China makes high volume, low cost, low quality goods but is also improving rapidly. The problem in the US is that we aren't allowed to import any of China's *good* stuff so we see a slice of their capabilities.

Rugaru985 2026-03-19 18:01

It’s actually a North Korean being paid by a Chinese agent to pretend to be German to manipulate South Americans by directing this post at North Americans where the South Americans can see it…. It’s a small world after all. Oh, and there’s an Australian laughing at it.

I'm German. No German writes like this.

stkim1 2026-03-19 19:07

The sheer scale of the Chinese manufacturing capacity is simply beyond anyone's imagination, and it has been like that more than two dacades. There was even a joke 'everything is made in china' in the US. Let me tell you a bit of history. In 1939, the good old US took 43% of the global manufacturing capacity. Germany took 14%, and Soviet had less than that. Everything was made in the US, just like China now. The top quality products were made in Germany like now, but the US overwhelmed in capacity. When the ww2 broke out, the US supplied the Soviet everything including SPAM. Nikita Khrushchev wrote in his memoir that Stalin said the Soviet would have lost the war against Germany if the US didn't help. In the end, it was manufacturing capacity that decided the outcome of the war. There's a reason the Western allies bombed and bombed again the German manufacturing region during the war. In 2023, China takes up more capacity than the US and the western Europe combined. Go search yourself. Now, which side China is on?

baycenters 2026-03-19 19:11

+0/-0.05mm is the tightest tolerance I specify on two parts, and I have that stuff done stateside about a mile from my office.

No_Accident8684 2026-03-19 19:16

Welcome to the world of propaganda. China is long ahead of Europe. It may take another 10 years for the chips but then it’s over. I never understood why Europe is so far up the US‘ ass and is not working WITH china

Guac_in_my_rarri 2026-03-19 19:22

I am sorry to say, your realization is like 10 years late. China has been one of the best places to source and manufacture since mid to late 00's and be able to trust the quality. It's one the of the few places where one can buy the quality level.

NewsWeeter 2026-03-19 19:23

Makes me cringe so hard when chinese is equated to bad quality.

Background-Singer73 2026-03-19 19:47

This sounds like someone who is Chinese. You type like the Chinese not the Germans

d1no5aur 2026-03-19 19:52

right? this is the pot calling the kettle black lolol

Capt-Crap1corn 2026-03-19 19:56

Two things in this specific situation can be true and I agree. We haven't got a chance to really understand that Chinese products in the United States equal good quality. It's always been cheap and available.

Draxx01 2026-03-19 20:02

German capitalization is very distinct.

warmchipita 2026-03-19 20:25

The really cheap crap goes to developing countries that are not in Asia (Latin America/Africa/Eastern Europe). Cheap crap in USA is mid to top tier in a lot of developing countries that are outside of Asia. The t-shirts sold at gas stations in USA is honestly bad quality to the American consumer, but you go to Latin America and it's mid to mid-high quality in the respective market. Why do I say out of Asian countries? Because a lot of the raw materials, manufacturing, and logistics are in developing Asian countries, so they actually get decent stuff for a decent price (minus electronics).

theactiveaccount 2026-03-19 20:54

Did everyone forget that china used to make most of the iPhones? They'll make what we pay them for.

They are starting to give the Swiss a run for their money in watch making too. It will probably be a while before the perception of poor quality goes away for them, but it’s definitely happening, and I can easily imagine a world in which they become known as the preeminent manufacturer of high quality luxury goods

CreepyConspiracyCat 2026-03-19 23:28

Now’s a good time to swoop some of those pieces up. I remember when Japanese guitars were considered knockoff inferiors but now they fetch a premium on places like Ebay.
