Moving to full EV household

Leading-Preference11 | 2026-03-18 13:00 | 11 views

Hi all I currently have the OG etron (20 reg) launch edition as our primary EV. Car is fantastic but range is adequate/poor and Audi maintenance is expensive. I then have an Audi a6 3.0 TDI which is the motorway cruiser and the car is getting on a bit and to be fair it is hardly being used as I mainly work remote and it’s used for the kids clubs and the boot is just awesome as I have a lot stinky sport bags (think footballs, hockey goalkeeper kits and etc) Now I don’t know what to replace the A6 with, the Tesla M3 and Byd seal were high up on my list boot the boot “entry” is quite small? Was thinking do I got SUV with a MY and I believe 2022/2023 reg is better? Or the polestar 2? Looking to spend £20-£25k I do need a car that can do long range (ideally high 250-300+) as if I get called out for work need to do 150miles easily and not worry about charging the next day and the big boot! The etron is the daily driver, although I might be looking to replace that. Any advice

You have loads of options, as far as boot opening goes you could look at: 1. BMW i4 2. Polestar 2 3. Skoda Enyaq 4. Kia EV6 The top three you should be able to get 350+ miles of WLTP range the EV6 at least 300 miles

LesDauphins 2026-03-18 13:08

VW ID7 tourer?

klawUK 2026-03-18 13:09

would the etron not cover those work distances? If not a MY LR would be a simple candidate. roomy, massive boot and plenty of range. We have a RWD standard range and its plenty for us, and wife has e-golf for commuting only mostly due to lack of range MY22/23 gets you ryzen and heated rear seats I think? I’m a 2023 and I held out for that specific mini refresh

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-18 13:09

Thanks chief I’ve been mainly reviewing car wow videos and their long range test And they didn’t have the bmw i4!

Disastrous-Trash1025 2026-03-18 13:10

Get the model y for boot space Enyaq isn’t bad either, id4 is a little smaller

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-18 13:11

I personally like the ID7 tourer but wife would be caught driving an estate

Think_Perspective385 2026-03-18 13:15

The i4 is such a sleeper in the EV world right now because nobody thinks they can afford one but if you look they are surprisingly reasonable second hand and fantastic cars, they have a hatchback so the boot opening is useful and they look quite nice too. Officially I think the range is 365 miles or around there and ive seen a few tests doing 355+ in summer so it seems to be holding up well.

We have a '25 Model 3 LR AWD & a '24 Model Y Standard Range. You're correct about the boot on the 3, its reasonably capacious but the opening is small. That's why we have the Y as well, hatchback and big boot means large suitcases go in without issue. In terms of years, they improve year or on year but yes '22 as a minimum to make sure it has the Ryzen chipset rather than the Atom.

I have an EV6 and the space inside amazed me. Loads of boot room, loads of back seat, a frunk and the charging speeds are immense. Did a 250 mile motorway run on a single charge a couple of weeks back, with the temperature in single figures, so I'm assuming that'll bump up a little further come the warmer months. I'm also a huge fan of the ID.7, estate or hatch, they both have plenty of luggage space. I found the Polestar 2 and i4 to be quite cramped, and couldn't have gotten anybody in the rear seats behind me but obviously that's a personal thing. Our fleet users seem to love the Elroq's and Enyaq's, especially the Enyaq coupe's.

P2 long rane. Pilot Plus edition. Wont regret it.

SomeGuyInTheUK 2026-03-18 13:47

MY has a huge boot plus huge underboot space.

user0179 2026-03-18 13:54

Given the muddy kit, you will want a big hatch opening. Model 3 and BYD Seal have small openings, so I would look at a Model Y, VW ID.4 Pro or Hyundai Ioniq 5. All of these will do your 150 mile work run on one charge and have square, easy boots. Take the goalie bag to a viewing and test the load height. At 20 to 25k you can usually find Enyaq, ID.4 and Ioniq 5. Model Y RWD sits near the top end but does appear in that range. You also might not need a 300 mile car if you use a planner like RoadToaster.

Demeter_Crusher 2026-03-18 14:53

If you don't need much rear seat space, BMW i4 - proper hatchback with a properly big boot.

Amazing-Visual-2919 2026-03-18 14:57

Early etrons were abysmal for range.

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 15:01

We have an E-Tron 55, and on a good day it'll do about 210 miles, we could probably eek it up to 250 if we really, really tried! That's out of it's 95kwh battery

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 15:04

Is your E-Tron a 50 or 55? We have a 55, and whilst it'll only really do 210 miles on a charge, it's charging curve is pretty much flat, so it'll hold 150kW most of the way, and still does 50kW at 95% (faster than my old Leaf at it's peak!) Combined with the open Tesla Superchargers, it's actually a fairly decent road trip car, and would actually be cheaper to road trip than my Leaf if I didn't have my Chademo to CCS adapter and had to rely on expensive Chademo chargers!

klawUK 2026-03-18 15:19

I mean - that still sounds like 150 miles easily. If IO wants two long range cars that’s totally fine of course

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 15:23

In the dead of winter, 150 miles is still just doable. Our average efficiency over January was 1.8mi/kwh, which puts the range at about 155 miles!

BigJDizzleMaNizzles 2026-03-18 15:30

Pshhhh estates are peak motoring! Sack the Mrs, get the ID7. Mine is being delivered on April fools day. I'm gonna be so pissed off if they don't show up.

Amazing-Visual-2919 2026-03-18 16:10

That's not great efficiency is it though? 2 and a bit miles per kWh?

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 16:13

The 'and a bit' is doing some heavy lifting there! The lifetime average over 80k miles is 2.05mi/kWh!

23RBc 2026-03-18 18:28

We just got a 72 plate IX3, was just under 24k, only a week in but love it so far

Comfortable-Fall1419 2026-03-18 18:50

A6 Etron - Win win. For a boot bonus get the Avant. If you’re looking to lease there’s some insanely good deals on them ATM if you can pull the trigger before the end of March and don’t mind taking pot luck on what’s in stock. 400p/m 🤯

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-18 19:29

This is the problem with the OG etron 55 at 80% charge winter range is 140 at best and it’s so weather dependent, there’s no preconditioning of the battery. In summer it’s easily 180+ at 80% But it is a brilliant and comfy daily driver for trips within (100miles there and back), and the school trips, clubs. The air suspension makes you waft around and it is nice big and roomy inside. Bought it 3 years ago for £35k and it’s worth £20kish now. Don’t mind the deprecation but with Audi servicing costs, and don’t get me started on the £3k I had to pay for the sunroof leaking I am just really wary of the bills but as they say German cars - big bills but I have Audi extended warranty

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-18 19:33

Yea we have the 55, I do love wafting to a Tesla supercharger and then depending on layout taking two bays, as the Tesla chargers had/have short charging wires! It is a brilliant car for daily, just the winter range is just poor at 80%

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 19:36

We paid £20k for ours 2 years ago, but it's a higher mileage example. We haven't had an issue with the sun roof, but I checked the drains straight away and they were clear. I read about the horror stories! We have a VAG specialist that services ours, I think it was about £280 for a full service, including brake fluid change, coolant tank change and cleaning the sun roof drains, plus they update the Audi online service shite. Well worth it IMO as that covers the main issues. I personally prefer my Leaf 62kwh as it's a lot more fun to chuck around the back roads, especially with grippy tyres. Although tbh it's not much better on leccy when you drive like a 17 year old, on the 13 mile journey to work I usually only average 2.6mi/kWh 🤣🤣 I've only had it 6 months, done 10k miles and averaged exactly 3mi/kWh.

yolo_snail 2026-03-18 19:41

All the superchargers around here are V4, bar the one up in the borders, so it's never been an issue for us. My Leaf doesn't have an issue, since the charge port is at the front. Although, with the newer layouts where they put the chargers at the side of the bay, I have to take up 2 bays to reach the front! The Kempower chargers Sainsbury's and others use are ballache for the E-Tron though, the charge port is just far enough back that it puts a fair amount of pressure on the port, a bit too much for my liking. If I'm being honest, we mainly charge to 100%, even though the car constantly gets upset about it.

BaronE65 2026-03-18 20:58

We have an ID.Buzz which we absolutely love. But even used they are pricey

Shreddasaurus 2026-03-18 22:02

Could check out the Renault Scenic too for another SUV option.

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-18 22:39

So your the only person whose mentioned the scenic and autotrader is “flooded” with them. I do have to admit they do look nice!

bugra101 2026-03-19 00:48

Not sure if can be found for 20-25k but EV9 or the Ioniq 9 are absolutely massive in boot space. If not definitely an EV6

Shreddasaurus 2026-03-19 08:30

Yeah, I really like the look of it. It has an Android based software so works pretty seamlessly for navigation etc. Renault have been killing it with their EVs lately! They probably don't quite have the value proposition or size/space of a used Model Y. But my neighbour has one in black and it looks very slick. The Nissan Ariya is the same platform, but doesn't have the Renault touches on the software and interior.

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-19 08:42

I know a school dad who had the Renault on lease and did say it was riddled with faults and just had to cancel his lease as it spent too much time in the garage, it’s the only thing putting me off.

Leading-Preference11 2026-03-19 08:46

Yea the issue with the sunroof wasn’t the drains. It’s the seals holding the sun roof assembly in place, any bit of standing water just used to leak through, it wasn’t bad but reason why I keep going back to Audi is they did extend the sun roof warranty for another 2 years and for actual warranty has to be serviced by Audi 😢
