Hi all, Choosing between: • Tesla Model Y • CUPRA Tavascan • BYD Sealion 7 Coming from an Audi Q5. Family of 4, mostly school runs + occasional long trips. All around £300–£350/month on lease. Which one would you go for and why? 👍

I personally would not get a Tesla because of Musk. If you have no issues with that, the model Y is the better car out of all three. Between the other two, it's a hard choice. I prefer the larger boot and outside aesthetics of the Cupra (also a family of 4) but the interior and software on the BYD seems so much better to use. Maybe have a test drive of them so you can get a feeling on which one you prefer

i test drove the sealion and Y yesterday - i'm getting the Y because i know where i am with it. sealion was lovely and comfortable, quiet cabin noise. Y cabin and comfort not \_as\_ great but the space in that bad boy! A friend of mine test drove the Tavascan, he thought it was really bad. I'd advise a test drive of all three first.

One of these immediately gets thrown out as an option in my opinion, which is a shame because the car itself is great. The other two are both perfectly good EVs, so I'd recommend you take the Cupra and BYD for a test drive and see which you personally prefer. They'd handle a long trip with ease. Coming from an Audi you may be more familiar with the VW Group software.

Thanks .. even I am not leaning towards Tesla on the same reason. Test drove BYD and liked the interior and overall driving experience. Will test drive the cupra. How about the tech and overall real time mileage figures of both ?

Given your use case I would pick the BYD over the others because: BYD Big Wins 1. Great software being updated regularly 2. Feels like a traditional luxury car the materials feel nice the build quality seems solid 3. That 360 degree camera is great 4. Top notch battery tech 5. Its a comfortable well made, well thought out car that is great to drive, the looks grow on you, I hated it completely to start with but the more I see it the more I like it and you don't see the outside when you drive and all its best qualities are under the skin BYD Negatives 1. Slowest charge speed of the three but given your use case that isn't an issue and for me it wouldn't be either it charges fast enough Tesla Deal Breakers 1. No physical controls. everything on the touchscreen, this doesn't work for me 2. Ultra minimalist interior 3. Material quality isn't so good 4. Build quality has improved greatly but its not a class leader 5. Styling feels boring to me 6. Musk being a dick Cupra Deal breakers 1. Its not cutting edge enough tech wise, its good but a bit behind 2. VW is slow at updating its software side 3. Ride quality isn't great in rural areas

Model Y the best of that bunch however the very minimal interior is not for all so do test drive them all and make sure you are comfortable with it. The others will appear to have more shiny knobs and bells and whistles which can make them feel more premium which is largely just smoke and mirrors. You do need to be comfy with doing everything via big screen and voice control which is where the Y is at. To my mind 5 buttons to control AC doesn't suddenly make a car old school. One thing to remember, on a Model Y test drive there will feel like a lot of setting up is needed on the big screen, that's because you'll be using the Tesla Centre key card. As an owner you set up once, assign the settings to your phone or key card and then the car recognises you and applies them when you get in. So there is minimal further faff.

Have you considered the Xpeng G6? Really nice car.

But they not 350 a month are they, more like 550 with deposit

Polestar 4 sits within those ranges. Direct competitor to the MY. Love mine, epic car.

I drove P4 and loved it but I am looking for SUV style .. P4 feels like a saloon ..

Positive_Ad6134 2026-03-18 17:38

Haven’t tried and didn’t know much about it .. thought BYD is best Chinese EV in UK atm .. I may be wrong

nongingertreeninja 2026-03-18 18:16

I get that. I came from an X3 and it does feel low slung and wider although it’s not far dissimilar dimensions wise.

Probably the Cupra. The Tesla and the BYD are a bit too political.
