Which public charger is cheaper

Stepho_62 | 2026-03-19 20:15 | 9 views

I live in Far North Queensland an took delivery of a BYD Atto 2 yesterday. On the 400k trip home i used 2 public chargers one to top up the battery and one mid trip to get home. The first ( Noodoe) was 33¢ per Kwh but it was slow, and the other was a Yurika charger managed by Chargefox which was much faster but 55¢ per Kwh. Is this common across the charge networks? Whats the cheapest option when not charging at home

You can get the PlugShare app and see chargers from all networks around you. The faster the charger, the more it will cost. The 150+ kWh chargers can be closer to 70 and 80 cents depending on the time of day.

Yep, that's pretty common. Fast DC chargers are more expensive, a bit more aggressive with your battery, but, well, faster. Generally all the AC chargers I've seen are in that 30-35c range, and DC chargers around the 50-80c range. Talking about which chargers are cheapest isn't usually worth it. At 35c, a full (45kwh) charge on an Atto 2 is under $16. Yeah, that could almost double with a particularly expensive fast charger, but you're still talking $25/$30. With the difference in price being so small, your time, and the convenience, are likely going to be a very important factor in your choice of where and how to charge!

hi, I use public charging and the prices range between 35c - 50cKWh for AC charging, like the AC pole chargers and car park chargers. The national median price for fast DC Tesla Superchargers is 49c/kWh. Some other brands of fast DC chargers are dearer (50-80ckWh). In remote locations, like Tully in Qld, the prices for non Tesla chargers are sometimes higher. For example the two Evie locations in Cairns are 68 or 82c and Evie in Townsville are 82-85c, but the Tesla chargers in Townsville, Tully and Cairns are only 43c/kWh. Here is a [list of prices](https://evlog.net.au/price-list/)

Mate, thanks so much for this. I did a half charge in Tully before the run up the Palmerston Highway yesterday (in shocking weather I might add) I used the Yurika charger in the car park at the supermarket. It was at that point I realised that the Tesla Chargers are not just for Tesla's D'oh

I had 38% when I started n charged it to 100% in 52 minutes. It cost me $20. I'm not remotely complaining about price, its more about the variability. I'm slowly learning, thanks for the input :-) it all helps

All good. In my experience, they're all close enough in price, for the same speed tier. You just need to keep a handful of apps on your phone to actually pay for the different networks.

The charger that costs less is cheaper. DC charging is in general quite expensive. AC charging at home on an EV tarrif is much cheaper.

Yeah, your right. I think I'm up to 4 in two days. Thats also 4 more companies that have my CC details which makes me very uncomfortable

Mine had been on the 240v 8 amp charger for the last 12 hours. Its fully charged now from my home storage so no cost at all.

DC fast charging is always going to cost more. An exception is to find off peak times on some networks. For example I know Tesla Superchargers can cost as little as 25-30c/kW at midnight and before 9 am for Tesla owners. You can subscribe to Tesla for $9.99/m to get the same prices and subscribe for only the month of your trip. Check the Tesla app for the pricing for each site.

If you're worried about sharing credit card details you could open an account with a company like Wise. They let you make virtual credit cards and freeze them anytime. I use it for the charging apps and just have $100 in wise and top it up with a bank transfer as needed. It makes me feel more comfortable than them having the details of my main account.

Thank you for this. Ill definitely have a look at this. Suppliers cant be trusted to protect your card details and im keen to minimise that risk.
