Tesla Model Y vs VW ID4 vs XPeng G6 vs BYD Sealion 7 comparison

Friendly_Menu5332 | 2026-03-19 19:33 | 13 views

Winner: Tesla Model Y Second: VW ID4 Third: Xpeng G6 Fourth: BYD Sealion 7 The Tesla is the best in this comparison, but as a VW enthusiast great to see the ID4 come second. Why aren’t VW selling more? It feels under appreciated by the market.

Price point would be a large factor. We all know many companies drop the price at the whim of a hat. Many waiting for this to happen. Personally I’m a fan of the ID buzz although at that price point i can’t justify it.

Relevant-Priority-76 2026-03-19 19:46

Xpeng is a no go imo. Too many importer issues and has had the update pending since before it released

drprox 2026-03-19 20:24

Pretty convenient the Zeekr wasn't there. Not sure they journos can't drive it until September. They'll have delivered thousands by then... Edit - my gripe with the VW is the interiors are so low rent. A mate got one of the full.optioned ones and it's just cheap, compared to really almost anything petrol or electric.

cosmicr 2026-03-19 20:35

When I was doing my research the VW didn't even come in to the equation. I feel they're quite off the mark here in terms of understanding what people want.

No Connectivity on VW. No App Like buying a blackberry in smartphone era

Visible_Area_6760 2026-03-19 21:07

$59,990 seems like a ripper price for that car, surely there sales are about to take off.

Visible_Area_6760 2026-03-19 21:08

They do have an app, but it isn’t as good as some others. Put the app to the side and the car is great and I’ve test driven most now.

Visible_Area_6760 2026-03-19 21:10

Is it the connectivity you’re referring to? I’m in my research stage and the id4 is a front runner for me, only negative I can see is I can’t turn the heater on from my phone…but the salesman said I can schedule it to fire up at a specified time which will work for me as I leave for work at the same time every day. Otherwise the car has it all and some features others don’t.

Flightwise 2026-03-19 21:42

Which are those features important to you the others don’t have?

Unhappy_Armadillo_81 2026-03-19 21:44

⏰ waiting 😛

LoadedSteamyLobster 2026-03-19 21:51

Yeah, xpeng and the current importer are in a legal battle currently, so good luck if anything goes wrong and you need parts

Relevant-Priority-76 2026-03-19 21:54

The importer not too long ago came out and said customer were wrong and their expectations of getting parts were too high. It’s a real shitshow

LoadedSteamyLobster 2026-03-19 21:58

It’s a shame that xpeng didn’t just launch locally themselves. Now they’re holding back the facelift g6, I guess to punish the importer, while every other market has it already

Relevant-Priority-76 2026-03-19 21:58

‘There is a surprising amount of lag before unlocking that. There is a split-second of hesitation between pressing the accelerator pedal and the car starting to build speed – and then upon lifting off, the car will keep the power on for a moment.’ Exactly my experience with the Sealion (though reddit folk always shout me down on it) it’s really unnerving that a car that accelerates so hard keeps accelerating for a small time after the throttle is lifted. The excessive squat is always pretty poor form. Sealion 7 is so close to being a great car but a few issues that could easily be fixed means it’s really off the pace.

Relevant-Priority-76 2026-03-19 22:13

Even with all the problems I would still buy a P7 if they released it here. Such an amazing and unique car

antigravity83 2026-03-19 22:15

Shouldn't it be the ID5? Zeekr should also be in there.

antigravity83 2026-03-19 22:15

Yeah I looked at the ID5 but couldn't get past the interior. Hard plastics, piano black everywhere, touch buttons on the steering wheel. No carpet liner in bins etc. No app/connected services is also a killer.

AffectionateGas9915 2026-03-19 22:20

Yeah I’m currently in the hunt for a vehicle and would have definitely purchased a facelift G6 by now, especially if you run the price conversion of what they’re charging in NZ to AUD. Hopefully Xpeng can get this sorted out sooner rather than later and turf the importer. The 7X definitely is the best car but price wise probably can’t justify it. The SL7 and budget option of Leapmotor B10 are probably the next most appealing for me.

Noonewantsyourapp 2026-03-19 22:24

I would make the sale person show you that feature before you sign. ~~I have an ID.4 and haven’t seen it as a feature.~~ VW made the settings for charging at specified times linked to locations (good idea in theory) but AU delivered ID.4 don’t have GPS, so you can’t set a charging schedule at all. Edit - I’ve since had a look and found it in the menu.

locksmack 2026-03-19 22:25

Yeah give me a cheaper ID.Buzz and I’d be all over it. It’s too expensive at the moment, especially considering the range.

drprox 2026-03-19 22:25

You get very used to it. That said I find our polestar throttle makes more sense.

cryptofomo 2026-03-19 22:31

Odd that the Škoda Enyaq 85 is excluded - it’s got more space, longer warranty, and is nicer to drive (imo) than the ID4, for the same price.

noisymime 2026-03-19 22:56

It's a REAL shame because the car is honestly great. We tested the Tesla, BYD and the Zeekr as well and purely on the car itself the Xpeng was our favourite. Hoping it's resolved fast and HQ takes over. We'd be down for the facelift model immediately if that happened.

noisymime 2026-03-19 22:59

> Pretty convenient the Zeekr wasn't there. Not sure they journos can't drive it until September. this article is from August last year. They're referring to September 2025.

roflpops 2026-03-19 23:13

My shark does it too. Some people literally don't feel it but it's absolutely noticible and I find it very unsettling. This is only under heavy acceleration but I really don't like it, especially compared to Tesla which is instantaneous in my experience

Carmageddon-2049 2026-03-19 23:15

Xpeng G6 and Model Y have to win out. They have the smoothest software

hammeroztron 2026-03-19 23:15

Appealing! No Musk overlord

hammeroztron 2026-03-19 23:16

Has the range of a mobility scooter

hammeroztron 2026-03-19 23:18

Buy a second hand model y and wait for next gen BYDs with blade 2 and gigacasting

xjrh8 2026-03-19 23:23

For anybody that hates videos, Tesla in first place, followed by VW, then Xpeng with BYD in last place.

da_leroy 2026-03-19 23:56

VW has no internet connectivity. Being able to do OTA updates as well as remotely control car is pretty much mandatory for most car buyers these days.

hammeroztron 2026-03-20 00:46

Certainly look good.

Visible_Area_6760 2026-03-20 00:56

They showed me in the menu on the test drive. I’d have a look through your infotainment.

noisymime 2026-03-20 01:50

2nd hand Model Y will start to become more appealing once the 2026 cars hit the used market as they came with the 5 year warranty rather than 3. Buying even a 1 year old Model Y at the moment means you've only got 2 years of warranty left, which isn't great.

MrsCrowbar 2026-03-20 01:56

We have a Buzz, you can absolutely set it to fire up heating/cooling at certain times in the infotainment system.

drprox 2026-03-20 02:07

Why do I always need to check the bots are actually posting current articles :(

MrsCrowbar 2026-03-20 02:07

It's really not, especially for new buyers that haven't had it before. I know we shopped for a car. The app was secondary and didn't even register as a concern. The car, the specs, the safety, comfort, and practicality for transporting people are and should be the main criteria for buying a car. If anything, we were happy NOT to have an app that can allow the car to be controlled by external sources. The VW app has the ability to contact the dealership and for VW to contact you. It has location and logs trips. It shows you the charge and updates it when charging. You can set the car itself to do the things these apps do. It's not like it lacks the ability. You just get in the car to set it up. Also, if enough VW owners people in Aus really wanted the app connectivity, then VW will bring it here. It just doesn't have the user case for them to bring it here.
