Quick questions before buying a BYD Sealion 7

Both-Nature-617 | 2026-01-12 12:51 | 31 views

Hi everyone, I am very close to buying a **BYD Sealion 7 Excellence AWD**. I have already watched a lot of reviews, read articles and searched this subreddit, but I could not really find clear answers to the specific questions below – so I thought I would ask you directly. 1. **Software updates** If I buy a 2025 model, how long can I expect proper OTA support? I would like to avoid the typical “new software = buy a new car” situation that many traditional brands have. 2. **Driver profiles** I will share the car with my wife. Does the Sealion 7 support driver profiles (seat, mirrors, climate, infotainment), or is this planned? 3. **Warning sounds** I saw in some videos that speed and lane warnings can be quite persistent. Is it true that you have to disable them again after every restart? Thanks a lot for any insights – and if you have any other tips or things worth knowing for a future BYD owner, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for the feedback. Does not sound that great, but good to know.

In Germany/EU it is mandatory to have these sounds on at every restart of the engine. So there is no way to avoid it beside of programming, which will of course influence the warranty. You can quickly disable the speed warning by 3 clicks (in my Seal). It is also not that annoying. Only two beeps and then again after a while or new speed limit. Lane assist you can choose 3 settings but I’m not confident about the duration .

I live in Switzerland (even though we are not eu), so very good input from you. thank you! did not know that.

Hi, thanks for this very helpful. On the child detection, if you leave child seats at the back without turning the alert off, does this trigger the alarm? im also considering this car but a bit worries about the software niggles? also is there a shortcut to turn the adas and child detection off easily?

EU owner here (Portugal), Sealion 7 Comfort, bought last month. I already received an OTA update to 3.0.1. OTA / software: So far OTA support looks active (at least right after purchase). I can’t guarantee how many years it’ll stay “feature-heavy”, but it doesn’t feel like a “new software = new car” situation. Driver profiles: I don’t see full driver profiles like some brands (seat + mirrors + climate + infotainment all tied together). What it clearly has is seat memory, and I think it can also store mirror positions with the memory, but I haven’t tested the mirror part yet. Warning sounds: EU-spec warnings can be persistent. Some settings may need re-disabling after restarts depending on the function/software version, but once you know where the toggles are, it’s quick and easy to turn them off. Overall: It’s been an excellent car so far, and I’m really happy with the buy. I’m honestly enjoying it more than I expected, especially coming from premium European brands. This is my first Chinese car, and at this point I wouldn’t want to go back.

Thank you!

-2. Drivers Profile: Not **yet** supported. The BYD Dolphin Surf (the small compact car) just got driver profiles in the newest update. Therefore **I** (just me personally) suspect this will also be in the next update for the bigger, more premium cars. (would be weird if not)

Cheers, thank you

Are you referring to seat positions? Or are you referring to profiles saved to keys which depending on which key is used to unlock the car will adjust to the linked seating position accordingly?

I also was an early March 25 delivery in AU. Looks like there are issues pushing out V3 for 2410. I was able to get the service centre to update this manually to V3 for me last year. I've found CPD warnings have been close to none on V3.

Different profiles which you can activate with the app. When yo then open the car via the phone, the user's settings will be loaded. (seat position, rear view mirror, ambient lights, infotainment design) In the car it will show you a QR Code, which you scan with the BYD app for initial initialization: https://i.imgur.com/7C4aobs.png https://i.imgur.com/mwFUW7h.png Sadly, no word about a binding to the physical keys.

Also in Australia and currently have an Atto 3. What sort of real-world range are you getting out of yours? Is it the performance or premium?

Compraria novamente ou iria de Tesla Y?

Do you use mostly Apple CarPlay? I think that the entertainment system is clunky and not ux friendly.

Before buying the Sealion 7, I test-drove several models, including the Tesla Model Y. I tried the Audi Q3/Q4, BMW, Volvo EX40, and the Model Y, and the Sealion 7 felt like the best fit for me, choosing a car is often very personal. For example, I find the Sealion 7 much better looking than the Model Y, but that’s obviously down to personal taste. Tech-wise, to be honest, I found the Model Y stronger, but overall the Sealion 7 feels more “complete” as a package. I preferred the Sealion 7 driving experience, the interior space (it’s very roomy), and the overall comfort. The technology is obviously good as well, and BYD is known for having really good batteries, which, in the end, is one of the most important parts of an EV. To answer your question directly, no, after one month with the car, I still feel the same. I’d choose the Sealion 7 over the Model Y. My suggestion is always to test-drive the models you’re considering. I never buy a car without trying it and comparing it to others, it’s a big investment, so I want to be sure of what I’m getting. And I don’t usually follow trends or buy based on brand or any preconceived ideas about whether a car is Chinese, European, or American. I go with what feels best for me, plus the overall feedback from other owners of course.
