Tesla's Cybertruck is falling far short of Elon Musk's ambitious sales targets

***From Business Insider's Tom Carter:*** The Cybertruck is running out of road. Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in the US last year, according to data from Cox Automotive released on Tuesday, as demand for Elon Musk's "apocalypse-proof" pickup fizzled. That's nearly half the number Tesla sold in 2024, and sales dropped 68% year-on-year in the final quarter of 2025. The figures are a far cry from the target of 250,000 sales a year Musk set before the Cybertruck rolled off the production line in 2023. The divisive electric truck amassed over 1 million reservations, but early models launched with a price tag of over $79,000, significantly higher than the nearly $40,000 sticker price Musk had floated in 2019. Since then, demand has been underwhelming — and collapsing sales have not been the only speed bump. The Cybertruck has faced a series of quality issues, with 10 recalls since 2023. While some of those issues have been fixed with a simple software update, others have proved more problematic. Tesla has issued recalls for accelerator pedals that could get trapped at full throttle, an optional off-road light bar that may detach and fly off the truck, and the Cybertruck's comically large windshield wiper failing. Meanwhile, the Cybertruck's highly distinctive design, which caused Tesla significant production issues, has had the unintended effect of turning the angular EV into a target. Multiple Cybertruck owners told Business Insider last March that they had been hit by vandalism and verbal harassment amid the backlash over Tesla CEO Musk's federal cost-cutting at the Department of Government Efficiency. Tesla has employed some creative strategies for turning around the Cybertruck's sales slump. I am actually floored they sold 20k of them in 2024.

hillybeat 2026-01-13 17:19

I reserved two when it was announced. I am not sure I would buy it at the 40k price if I was offered that today.

ShotBandicoot7 2026-01-13 17:19

This is not moving TSLA anymore. It‘ at this point just reconfirming that the sky is blue. What will move the stock is when robots won‘t make it or robotaxis are not progressing further. It will take months and years until TSLA converges back to its real valuation based on future profits.

ShoemakerMicah 2026-01-13 17:23

I said in 2023 that Rivian would beat Cybertruck sales soon. Everybody laughed. Rivian beat the Cybertruck by roughly 22,000 sales in 2025.

mishap1 2026-01-13 17:25

They sold 39k in 2024. 2025 only hit 20k. Less than half the # of Lightnings Ford sold over the last few years.

RulerOfSlides 2026-01-13 17:26

Wow, that’s a brutal drop. I mean I figured it was gonna be small volume, but ouch.

Major_Turnover5987 2026-01-13 17:26

Didn't at least 10k get "sold" to SpaceX? Essentially $1 billion? My opinion is those 10k, or more, didn't actually exist in the first place, nor will exist. And who heavily subsidizes SpaceX? The US taxpayer. Who received heavy tax breaks this past year? Billionaires. Fuck republicans and fuck anyone giving this fraudster money.

flying_butt_fucker 2026-01-13 17:27

Many parties are leveraged over their eyeballs, so when it comes down, half the stock market will come down. That's why some parties will do everything to prevent TSLA from crashing. It'll take the Musk house of cards that has been built down immediately. Not that I'm **NOT** looking forward to that PoS losing everything, but I'm just not so keen on the fall-out. edit: words

Business insider on top of a trend that started at release. 👏

amahendra 2026-01-13 17:32

Don’t be. Elon created CT to prove to the world that his fanboys would buy anything from him. Even the ugliest truck on Earth. Well, he did. Unfortunately, if you expect your customers only come from a cult, you have to expect a steep decline of sales soon after that.

duncansmydog 2026-01-13 17:35

I mean, it is a giant piece of shit that is embarrassing for any normal person to be seen in.

Boundish91 2026-01-13 17:36

What were you thinking?

fastwriter- 2026-01-13 17:37

So Tesla is essentially a one model car Company now. 3 and Y are the same platform. S,X and CT do not sell anymore. The Roadster is vapourware. And the Semi obviously dead before arrival. And in this one model, the Y generates 80 percent of the sales. So effectively Tesla only can sell one car model well. And this has not been updated fundamentally since it’s launch over six years ago. Charging speeds lag behind the competition, Quality always had. If you analyse Tesla pure as a car maker, the stock price would be close to penny stock levels. In a normally functioning car company, the CEO would have been sacked months ago. As this is impossible at Tesla, there will be bankrupcty not in the distant future unless a miracle happens.

a_Sable_Genus 2026-01-13 17:37

Not to worry they will keep creating fake sales to SpaceX and then force what they can't sell on other Elon outfits. I'm surprised ICE isn't pissing away Taxpayer funding on these too as it fits their theme of playing the baddies

Engunnear 2026-01-13 17:38

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 17:40

At least 1k are known to have been sold to SpaceX. The number sold to xAI are undisclosed. We don't know how much SpaceX paid for them.

therealCatnuts 2026-01-13 17:41

I would absolutely buy it today for AWD and 500 miles range for $50K as advertised at launch, and what I reserved for. I don’t care how ugly it is, that’s a value prop. The current truck comes nowhere near those though.

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 17:42

Ironically, Ford cancelling the F-150L benefits Tesla. Albeit, not enough for Tesla to sell a meaningful number of these trucks; the market for EV pickup trucks just isn't there yet, and most people of sound mind don't want to be seen in a Cyber-swasti-dumpster. That said, there's still competition in the EV truck market for Tesla from GM and Rivian. Ford is looking to push out their newer cheaper EV truck soon which could again steal market share from the other players, and multiple companies are looking to start pushing out EREV pickup trucks, including Dodge, Ford, and GM. I think these will see much higher demand than the full EV trucks.

AcadiaLivid2582 2026-01-13 17:44

The car widely regarded as the biggest flop in automotive history, the Ford Edsel, moved 111,000 units over 3 years. Musk has sold less than half that number of Cybertrucks.

Time-Entertainer-105 2026-01-13 17:46

LMFAO why

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 17:47

I think you're including R1S sales in that figure, which IMO, isn't necessarily a fair comparison. Not to defend Tesla or to suggest that CT sales haven't sucked. FYI, Rivian's total sales, and especially their R1T sales declined in 2025. They're in desperate need of their cheaper vehicles hitting the market.

hillybeat 2026-01-13 17:48

I had a Mach E. Someone crashed into me, and insurance gave me 50k. I took that money and got a Model Y because there was zero wait time. In 2025 I purchased another Mach E used for 19.5K, and received another 1k back from SoCal Edison. It has new tires, great condition, only 29k miles, and drives like I got it right off of the lot. I would NOT spend another 20K to get into a Cybertruck deathtrap.

hillybeat 2026-01-13 17:48

Didn't know Tesla CEO was a Nazi.

Roadgoddess 2026-01-13 17:49

Somebody posted her photograph of the SpaceX parking lot and it is nothing but cyber trucks. Imagine that’s where a significant number of them have gone

AffectionateSize552 2026-01-13 17:50

Gee, Musk made a prediction that didn't pan out. I saw one of the 20,000 out in traffic the other day. I was rolling in the Bolt, having a nice afternoon, when suddenly a great big ugly wedge of revulsion and bad karma oozed across the intersection up ahead. Hey, remember the Tesla Semi? Do you ever sit around and wonder how much better the EV sector might be dong if Musk had never come along and taken a great big dump all over it?

PKnecron 2026-01-13 17:51

Falling short? This is the most epic failure since the Edsel, which sold 116k units over two years.

zombieda 2026-01-13 17:52

Idk how much the lighting cancelation will affect cybertruck sales. The Lighting was essentially in the F150 form factor, so that has much broader appeal than the Cyber monstrosity. Agree on the EREV sales... this is the one that will appeal big now until solid state batteries are ready for prime time (I.e. can meet or exceed an ICE engine in cost and performance)

2ndcomingofharambe 2026-01-13 17:53

Waiting for the Trump tweet "unlocking" $200 billion of taxpayer money to custom order solid gold Cybertrucks (solid gold is the name of the spray paint brand at Home Depot).

I think the kind of person who would have bought a Ford probably wouldn't want to be seen in a cyber truck, and they have access to reliability statistics now, no reason to buy a truck that has body panels that fly off, or no water runoff control in the engine bay...

superchiller 2026-01-13 17:56

Saw one yesterday parked near a Whole Foods, and it looked dirty and incredibly ugly. The "stainless steel" body and ugly design were terrible decisions, no wonder it failed.

doomer_bloomer24 2026-01-13 18:00

“Falling far short” is very generous for something that is currently selling only 1% of its claimed demand.

Rolling_Pugsly 2026-01-13 18:00

> Elon created CT to prove to the world that his fanboys would buy anything from him. I agree, but think it's not quite that. He created the CT because he was high on his own ego and ketamine, bought into the fanboy bullshit, believed he could do no wrong, and refused to listen to anybody during the design of the CT. He was, and is, fully convinced of his own genius and that's what made him build the CT.

farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr 2026-01-13 18:06

Less than 1000 were sold to SpaceX

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 18:06

I'm sure plenty of F-150Ls were sold to employees, Ford family members, Michiganders, who only bought it for the novelty, and who would never touch a CT. I'm not saying all of the people people who were in the market for an F-150L will consider a CT, but I'm sure the number isn't zero either. Could be a few hundred. Could be a few thousand.

ArchitectOfFate 2026-01-13 18:08

DeLorean sold 6,700 cars over three model years.

PKnecron 2026-01-13 18:14

Yes, but that was never a mainstream automaker, like Ford and Tesla.

ShoemakerMicah 2026-01-13 18:15

I was including all models as both the truck and SUV are more truck-functional than the Cybertruck. Agree, Rivian has yet to get into their stride.

0o0o0o0o0o0z 2026-01-13 18:15

> I am actually floored they sold 20k of them in 2024. Lotta vehicles went to SpaceX, and other Musk "ventures" think the CTs and various other models.

torokunai 2026-01-13 18:18

I reserved a trimotor w/ FSD for $77k. Man that was a long time ago! I wanted it for an overland adventure vehicle since it was "sold" as well-suited for that, but as the actual product came out in 2023 it was basically nothing like the 2019 version, and six figures to boot. So I traded in my 2018 LEAF for an AWD Model Y and called it a day.

torokunai 2026-01-13 18:20

500 mile version was $70k in 2019. One of the real discrepancies in the announced features of the 3 trims was they all had the same payload but different ranges. That's unpossible.

Emotional-Heron2643 2026-01-13 18:20

Didn't he prove that with his $300 shitty tequila? Or the 'flamethrower'?

bonfuto 2026-01-13 18:20

If anything, they would buy a Rivian

torokunai 2026-01-13 18:22

yup, when I saw how the "30X Series" unpainted steel was in the wild in 2023 I knew the CT would be a crap owners experience.

hillybeat 2026-01-13 18:26

I got an AWD Model Y in 2023 because it was the only EV that didn't have a wait time. Its a great car, but I still hate Elon so looking to sell.

bonfuto 2026-01-13 18:27

There are a few in town, and whenever I see one it's a shock because everything about it is wrong. It would be funny, but you know that person thinks Elon is smart. One of them has a wrap, I'm wondering when it will corrode off. But at least for now the owner can wash it without it staining.

TheHipsterDufus 2026-01-13 18:36

I hope they turn the platform into an SUV

Boundish91 2026-01-13 18:37

CouncilmanRickPrime 2026-01-13 18:40

Musicman1972 2026-01-13 19:16

Why?

sidc42 2026-01-13 19:17

Also, they do exist mostly because they have parking lots filled with them all across the country that they built but can't sell. What SpaceX is doing with them and how long they hold on to them before they're written off, that's another story that won't show up on Tesla's books because it's a different company.

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 19:22

If I had to guess, SpaceX will end up selling the vehicles back to Tesla at a steep discount. It's very possible SpaceX paid well above MSRP to purchase them. It would be like double dipping. Tesla sells CTs to SpaceX at huge markups. SpaceX sells them back to Tesla for dirt cheap. Tesla re-sells them for the going used prices, receiving far more in the sale than they paid for them. So, Tesla sees huge margins from selling them to SpaceX, then huge margins through buying them back cheap and re-selling them again. SpaceX loses money on the deal, but that company is heavily funded by the US government, and they're a private company, so their financial records aren't publicly available. \_\_\_ Edit: Ironically this type of move would be akin to the US government subsidizing Tesla without giving any other OEM access to the program. It could also be considered round-tripping, an illegal action to boost the revenue of both companies, even though only Tesla would see a gain in income while SpaceX would experience a loss. SpaceX is allowed to specifically buy vehicles from one company without consideration for allowing other companies to make competitive bids to supply the vehicle fleet. Although should it be, given how much government funding this company is pulling in. If SpaceX were a nationalized company owned by the federal government, this action for the head of the company to buy vehicles specifically from his other company would be considered corruption.

admin_default 2026-01-13 19:23

Nobody forced Elon to make the CyberTruck incompatible with an SUV variant. So IMO, it’s totally fair to compare both Rivian’s R1T and R1S - a smart, modular design is part of the appeal.

EarthConservation 2026-01-13 19:23

I wouldn't do that on account that you would then need to include Tesla's SUVs into the calculation.

Musicman1972 2026-01-13 19:30

I’m an F150 Lightning owner. I’ve put 90k miles on mine. When it’s time to replace it I’ll get another Ford this is my 3rd F150. And 4 th Ford. The only other EV in the running is Rivian.

[deleted] 2026-01-13 20:25

I'd put the Delorean up there.. they only made around 9k of them and sold around 6-7k of them. Thats what I compare it to. I also suspect we may see a BTTF type movie in the future where the CT is a central piece of the movie.. A movie where part of it is making fun of the CT.

It’s definitely going far above and beyond my expectations, tbh. I didn’t think they’d sell 100 of these in Q4 2005, and they’ve sold more than that.

likewut 2026-01-13 20:58

I think we just need battery prices to keep coming down, and pull-through charging (w 800v charging) infrastructure to expand. The Silverado EV is a great road trip / towing vehicle EXCEPT you would need to unhook a trailer to charge pretty much everywhere right now. We're stuck in a chicken and egg situation with it now though, and without government support and low truck sales, there's not a lot of incentive to build out those pull through chargers. Tesla would be the biggest hope but no one in a Cybertruck tows anything anyway.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:03

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:05

I would think they should have been embarassed to even announce such a thing. I'd rather have a Homermobile.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:06

I think I've only seen one so far, but Teslas are not very common around here anyway.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:07

Yes, and its forerunner Bricklin only made about 3000. Let's not forget Fisker which I think was sold to some other company now using the body design on an ICE product.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:08

Rivian's design is actually practical, a real \*truck\*.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:10

I wouldn't buy that fugly toaster oven if it sold for $400.

ShoemakerMicah 2026-01-13 21:10

Exactly. I’m seeing quite a few on the road and almost infinitely more electric F150 fords. Guess the Ford is gone now though.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:15

Tesla isn't really a mainstream automaker either. They barely qualify as an automaker at all. They make widgets as props to their ponzi stock scam.

hillybeat 2026-01-13 21:16

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-13 21:20

Yeah, you could probably sell the tires for that and scrap the rest.

[deleted] 2026-01-13 21:32

To be fair, none of these companies were the size of Ford, so i'm going somewhat recant what I said.. It's the biggest flop of a car from a major manufacturer since the Edsel.

rellett 2026-01-13 23:42

Stock goes up

DevilRenegade 2026-01-14 00:19

Unsurprising. It's a vehicle built to cater solely to Musk's inner circle of Tesla stans, and literally nobody else. Everyone who actually wants one has already got one, so demand has absolutely cratered. It's not an especially good long range EV cruiser due to the unnecessary extra weight of the stainless steel bodywork panels tanking the range. It's also not particularly practical or usable as a work truck either due to the woefully small load bed size. And that's without going into all the obvious other flaws such as the terrible workmanship, poor design, body panels held on with glue, multiple recalls, terrible reliability etc. The whole thing just reeks of a Musk vanity project and if the Tesla board were in any way fiscally loyal to the company they'd have vetoed the crap out of this thing before it ever got off the drawing board.

practicaloppossum 2026-01-14 00:21

Why do you say that's unpossible? I mean, to move a given weight takes the same energy for all three models, but that just means they have different energy storage - either because of different batteries, or because software manipulates how they charge, or probably a couple of other ways they could play games with it.

torokunai 2026-01-14 00:49

at the annoucemement/reveal, the 250 mile range 2WD had a payload of 3500lb and the 500 mile range trimotor had a payload of 3500lb. That was clearly not possible. I sensed it at the time but dismissed it w/ a bit of cognitive dissonance. Musk was basically displaying the payload without any powertrain at all.

JTxFII 2026-01-14 01:09

I think they’re replacing it with a hybrid though. Full EV with a smaller battery and an ICE generator. I’d much prefer one of those anyway.

Beezelbubba 2026-01-14 01:11

EREV heavy-duty truck that can tow and will sell even less

JTxFII 2026-01-14 01:14

But the Delorean is beloved vehicle of pop culture history. The CT will be remembered as a symbol of hate, racism, and pedos.

neonmantis 2026-01-14 01:36

> Common theme. The common theme is that Musk explicitly rejects market research claiming that he, a hilariously out of touch billionairre, knows what people want better than they do. He designed a cybertruck that looks like a vehicle borne IED that everyone hated, he designed a semi that doesn't do any of the things that truckers want it to do, and now he's designed a taxi that is spectacularly ignorant of what passengers want.

Yes I agree. He’s a douche.

There was no way CT was going to succeed, but it could have been remembered like a delorean if Elon didn’t turn out to be a full blown Nazi.

I do. It would compete with BYD, instead of being a useless farce.

Lost_Purpose1899 2026-01-14 04:38

Making an unconventional (ugly) looking truck with less range and much more expensive than was promised. CEO went all in on MAGA racism. Headed a department that fires government employees left and right. Professes ignorance and bigotry on social media. What could go wrong?

FlipZip69 2026-01-14 04:45

Not a chance he is doing this. SpaceX is mostly owned by Musk and there is no way Musk will want to take a loss or write down the trucks like this. That is money directly out of Musk's pocket. The opposite it happening. Musk is trying to get as much cash out of Tesla as possible. He will not be taking this kind of loss.

FlipZip69 2026-01-14 04:54

They get 'dirty looking' almost immediately after washing them. If you spend an hour a day hand cleaning it, you can keep it looking 'ok'. (Ignoring the design itself). But if you do not dedicate your life to wiping it down, it looks all blotchy and just kind of gross. And where you touch the door frame, looks like a dirty wall after a few months.

musk "Doesn't matter, my stock is going up anyways."

Big fail! As always overestimated demand

Hopefully future articles about Musk’s “ambitious targets” (read: lies) incorporate this into the reporting. Rather than just mouthpiece his nonsense for shareholders.

Coming soon, a long but only 2 seat cybertaxi, with flap wing doors. Low seating so it is difficult for overweight or old people to get in and out. Flop in the making.

[deleted] 2026-01-14 13:58

I own a Model 3, and have played with FSD on it. I get the free trials from time to time. There is absolutely ZERO chance I am getting into a Tesla Cybertaxi using FSD. None, zero, will never fucking happen.

Well... think about it... SpaceX, one of Musk's companies that doesn't have to publicly report its financials but is claiming a potential IPO valuation of $1.5 trillion (that is super hyperinflated BTW), writes down $150+ million on these trucks (or at least will when they sell them)... while Tesla, another Musk company, gets to report $150+ million in high margin revenue on their very public quarterly financials, during one of their worst quarters ever. Which company would Musk prefer to boost at this point in time at the expense of the other? SpaceX regularly gets contracts, grants, and subsidies from the US government; often for well over a billion dollars at a time. Their latest StarShield contract, for which conveniently all details are classified, got a $1.8 billion contract from the US government. As far as anyone knows, this was just free money given to them by the government, and the government just uses SpaceX's regular ole Starlink satellites... maybe with a bit of extra encryption. I don't know what could make it more clear to onlookers that the US government is in full support of what SpaceX is doing right now, and is willing to subsidize all of it with taxpayer dollars. Musk, can use that to his advantage to boost his other companies.

John DeLorean was a lifelong auto industry insider who was heavily subsidized and put together a dealer network that was across an ocean from his manufacturing. The only reason they never got to become mainstream was because they made one product, and they made it badly, but I'd argue that it still counts, because the guy should have known what he was doing.
