Should I buy BYD Shark 6 or Sealion 7.

RentOk6852 | 2025-12-15 23:00 | 27 views

I work in healthcare. I really wanna buy Shark 6 just for looks and I have no use of it as ute. I travel just home to work 5 times a week which is 40km one side. I am making down payment 20k and 45k finance for 3 years. I am getting 2 offers either choose 1.88% finance rate or get $4500 cashback. I am really confused.

What about the whole EV vs PHEV thing? Surely you have a preference? I would have thought EV is better for your use case?

SexyDraenei 2025-12-15 23:06

Sit in the SL7 before you commit, as I found it uncomfortable. You won't have any problems with that distance in a pure EV, my commute is 30km each way and im typically only charging on the weekends, but you might not make it on battery only in the shark consistantly.

Suntzu_AU 2025-12-15 23:08

Honestly, I've driven the Shark and it's a really good vehicle, but I don't have any use for it either and it's too big to fit my garage. I think for 95% of the time, the Sealion's going to be a better drive and more useful.

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:09

As I checked Shark 6 has 100km range with battery or just 2L/100km so I thought that would be enough for me as I don’t travel more than that in a day. Am I wrong here?

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:12

Yeah I had a test drive yesterday for SL7 it’s good but not as comfortable as Shark 6 but SL7 is bit cheaper in comparison and my Dad said you don’t need a ute hence the confusion

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:14

I won’t have the garage problem as I am the only one parking in my garage. Are you planning to sell your shark 6 then? And How’s the performance? How many kms do you drive everyday? Do you have to charge it frequently?

HoboNutz 2025-12-15 23:19

No that’s my point. The whole hybrid thing seems wasted for you and you might as well go full electric.

Suntzu_AU 2025-12-15 23:20

I drove the shark at the BYD performance day at Mount Cotton around the track and I drove it off road during that test. It's a really nice vehicle to drive and doesn't feel like a truck, though it is very large, which I don't really like. In fact, a Shark about 80% of the size would be perfect for me. I can't get the benefits through my business with a PHEV, so I have to get EV anyway, as I need to claim the FBT exemption. So I'm a bit biased towards pure EV.

simsimdimsim 2025-12-15 23:24

Please don't buy a Shark if you don't need a ute. Massive yank-tank style vehicles (yes, the shark absolutely fits that description) are a scourge.

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:34

If you think Shark 6 just as a car even then it has luxurious feel whereas SL7 is just regular car. And that tank style is just too good to avoid

Sandymayne 2025-12-15 23:43

Reading your comments it kind of sounds like you’re set on the Shark in your own mind, but I’d be considering a fully electric car like the Sealion 7 if you’re just doing ~80km a day. You’d likely find with the shark that you’d be dipping into fuel every day, especially as the battery gets older. Can only go to about 25% before the car will kick the engine on, and it seems like a bit of a waste to have to worry about an engine and it’s servicing for maybe 5km a day. Whereas you could go full EV and as long as you could granny charge every night you’d be laughing, and it’d be cheaper to service and maintain over the long run. Electric motors are proving to be incredibly reliable over the long run and BYD batteries are elite. I’m probably going to get a shark myself but it’s because I’ll have to do some pretty long trips semi regularly (8 hour drive to Perth) and don’t want to wait for EV charging + want some light off road capability and a large tub too. If I could reliably take a Sealion 7 off road though and tow with it I’d be getting that in an instant. For your use case it seems to make even more sense in my mind. Edit: also if you go the novated lease route you’d save so much on a full EV thanks to the FBT exemption.

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:46

Okay thanks for that, I will definitely think about it

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:47

Okay thanks for that, it is really helpful I will definitely think about SL7. I had a chat with Maxxia re novated lease and when I did numbers it’s not really worth it

simsimdimsim 2025-12-15 23:47

>tank style is just too good to avoid 😞

RentOk6852 2025-12-15 23:48

Yeah that makes sense, thanks for your input bro

Sandymayne 2025-12-16 00:05

Probs wouldn’t be worth the lease for a shark unless you’re in the higher tax brackets and want savings that way, but it’s 100% worth for an EV because you get the tax savings + the FBT savings too. I think you can go a lightly used EV and still get it too and save even more on the early EV depreciation they experience too. There’s a lot to consider but generally speaking I think an EV would suit you so well.

RentOk6852 2025-12-16 00:21

I’m in high tax bracket but not sure if I can get FBT saving as I am not using vehicle for my work purposes just commuting to work

MisterBumpingston 2025-12-16 00:33

What confusion? If you don’t need a Ute don’t get a Ute.

We've got a SL7. It's pretty good, but if you don't need the space, go for smaller and cheaper.

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss 2025-12-16 01:56

You don't need the ute tray, and you don't need the petrol engine. Seems like the Sealion 7 is the obvious choice. I have one, it's a great car.

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss 2025-12-16 01:58

EVs on a novated lease are exempt from FBT. You don't have to use them for work. It makes EVs much more affordable than PHEVs or ICE cars on a novated lease.

bmwrider2 2025-12-16 02:19

we are at peak hybrid, not a good idea anymore…. Hybrids are DEAD https://youtu.be/SRUeWJ7zq5E

RentOk6852 2025-12-16 02:56

I am 26M so it’s more like a want

roadkill4snacks 2025-12-16 05:38

What about the xpeng g6? Esp the 2026 LR version

cnm132 2025-12-16 07:52

If you ever want to go camping or transport stuff, get the the Shark 6.

esotericloop 2025-12-16 12:39

Things to consider: - Sealion 7 will use a whole lot less electricity than the Shark in EV mode. - Sealion 7 is pure EV vs. Shark 6's PHEV drivetrain, so much better EV range around town but conversely no ability to run off fuel away from chargers. - Shark is much heavier built with tray and much more offroad capability. - Shark is friggin' huge and can be hard to park in city high-rise car parks etc. Basically if you want a nice efficient town EV, go Sealion, if you want to carry stuff, go offroad or do long country trips away from EV charging infrastructure, go Shark.

esotericloop 2025-12-16 12:44

To be clear, that's 2L/100km average if you're charging the battery every 80-90km. If you charge the battery every 70km it'll do 0L/100km indefinitely. It won't do 2L/100km just on fuel, though, more like 8-10L/100km round town and 12-14L/100km country driving.

IcarusPanda 2025-12-17 11:25

A mate that works at byd said to go a dolphin or a full EV cause the shark and the sealion have constant problems

RentOk6852 2025-12-17 11:27

What kind of problems?

IcarusPanda 2025-12-17 11:31

"The sharks consistently have issues with their Sim card reader.. honestly theres probably a shark Facebook page that they should go look at" Apparently there's like none of the accessories in the country ATM, "The sealion is notorious for knocking sounds in the front, paint defects" My mate is quite tired atm and doesn't spare much brainpower for these cars because they'd never buy one lol

[deleted] 2025-12-17 12:18

numbers are wrong, I'm saving 25k novated leasing a sl7
