BYD charging for Data soon in UK?

BlueWeasleyl | 2025-12-07 20:48 | 42 views

Was doing something on the BYD app and notice there is an option in the Store bit. Said BYD Connect for £99/ year. I know BYD Australia start charging user data per month for data usage .

yep. BYD in Australia always said you got 2 years of free data, but didn't say what would happen after that. Various people got upset about having to pay, but its not like you couldn't see that coming. Also, its not required for app access or updates. Only browsing/streaming. I never use that so I won't be paying when my free 2 years runs out.

No where it said it need to be pay when I got my Atto3 2 years ago . Just did my first service and dealer mention nothing on it . Anyway I can still use the data currently for streaming music

Well, with £150 VED that I didn't expect being lumped with, then a 3p a mile surcharge being proposed, and a more than likely mileage excess on the PCP plan I'm on - I won't be paying this too! I'm sure I'll just tether it to my phone if I need a network connection.

I have a 5G Mobile hotspot in my car 🤣

I’m in NZ and we were given 2 years free data. I ended up with almost 3 years. As I use Spotify and navigation I just hotspot to my phone for data now, it doesn’t affect my data cap and I prefer the cars software to CarPlay, the interface suits me.

I’ve sideload Apple Music on the Atto3 and also able to disable the traffic control thru another app . So I can freely use the data on any apps like before

If that happens here in my country, I would just use the Hot-Spot on my cellphone. There are autostart-apps, which automatically activate the hotspot when you get in the car. No hustle at all.

Having to pay wasn't the crux of the frustration from people in NZ/Australia. Yes, lot of people knew it would happen at some point. My car was nearly 3 years old when this occurred. I'd even asked BYD about it and what their plans were months earlier and was told there were no plans currently, but they would let us know when there was. The main issue people were complaining about was getting an app notification after 5pm one day, saying it would take effect the next day. The storefront didn't work initially for many people and needed a cache/data clear or uninstall/reinstall of the app to see it and purchase data. Most of the negative comments could have all been avoided if there was just a couple of weeks notice before that date saying "your initial free data will end on x date in 2 weeks time" and allowed people to purchase data ahead of time (effectively recharge it like you can with any other mobile phone sim) - this could have allowed BYD to actually provide support if there were app issues accessing the store (like there was). It was a poor change and communications exercise, even if the vast majority of people knew it would end.

yeah the only thing I care about is app access, and in Australia you can still use that without paying, so I won't be.

I ended up buying a cheap sim usb modem stick and a cheap data plan with physical sim and it works like a charm

JohnnyD1980 2025-12-08 00:08

How about features like remote a/c, location and software updates. I read they disable if you don’t pay the monthly sim plan regardless of providing data through hotspot?

Same question here

I have finished my data, those remote control function still works. Only spotify and all other apps that requires internet doesnt

In Turkey, during the warranty period of the car, that is, for 8 years, 2gb Internet is offered free of charge per month, it is sad and surprising that you charge a fee in such a short time.

Kent_Kong 2025-12-08 19:33

Ours finished too and we just use Android Auto. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

SiHuWa 2025-12-09 21:19

Here in Australia the data is handled via Telstra. However, when we got our Atto3 we were told that you can just swap out the mobile sim to another plan when the charging for data begins. Has anyone tried that?

cosminmarin 2025-12-10 09:26

Hope not it’s 1Gb after all, not much. And I have asked them already if they would be willing to expose the SIM location to add our own card. If you think about it for £10/mo you can have gigs more of data on a sim only plan.

Own-Peace-5431 2025-12-12 02:21

I tried that but there was a problem in that you can't have WiFi connected via hot-spot as well as android auto on your phone.. Will try again later
