Elon Musk has fired one of his top Tesla lieutenants

forbes | 2025-06-26 16:03 | 1286 views

Elon Musk fired Tesla’s head of operations in North America and Europe, amid declining sales in both regions and the electric vehicle brand’s falling popularity, according to people familiar with the matter. Omead Afshar, who started with Tesla as an engineer in 2011, had become one of Musk’s top lieutenants and was elevated to vice president to oversee business in the two key regions last October. He didn’t respond to a request for comment, nor did Musk or Tesla. Read more: [https://go.forbes.com/c/tSyG](https://go.forbes.com/c/tSyG)

Fired because he can't clean up all the shit Elon dumped on the brand fast enough.

Theferael_me 2025-06-26 16:06

Imagine blaming someone else for low sales when you're the one who's been prancing around doing Nazi salutes.

reeefur 2025-06-26 16:10

Getting scapegoated by your boss for his own Nazi antics is wild... But then these people all knew who they were working for. I have a friend high up at Tesla and the stories are crazy af. None of this is new to them, they stayed for $$$, theyll be fine.

CRXCRZ 2025-06-26 16:10

JohnHazardWandering 2025-06-26 16:11

What stories?

bonfuto 2025-06-26 16:12

Anyone with any sense would have started looking for a new job soon after Musk tanked the brand. Who wants to be associated with that?

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-06-26 16:12

Anyone who is working for Tesla at this point is simply collecting a paycheck and waiting for the high-tech job market to improve. There is no way that anyone there still gives a shit about the company.

As someone else said. Imagine having a liberal customer base, doing TWO nazi salutes \[among many other things\], then firing your guy when sales drop. Raging, raging mega narc.

banditcleaner2 2025-06-26 16:17

Money talks at the end of the day. Especially if they had stock options from back when the stock was cheap and held until today. Hard to convince someone to leave a company whose stock paid massively. People will look the other way or ignore the crazy antics if it means they’re paid handsomely.

Longjumping-Panic401 2025-06-26 16:18

Ya hes such a Nazi most of his top tier employees are non-white.

TacosAreJustice 2025-06-26 16:18

I’ve heard stories about Elon having a to go box of pills and basically always fiddling with a Ritalin pill… 3rd hand, but people who wouldn’t repeat stories they didn’t believe… I’m sure it’s 10x worse for the people in the know

ManifestDestinysChld 2025-06-26 16:18

I wonder if all the pragmatic Tesla execs with functional eyes and ears have fled already, or if there are any left who are quaking in their boots now that they've seen the price of failure to protect the boss from himself.

banditcleaner2 2025-06-26 16:18

Imagine all of that, and then imagine being a MAGA dipshit who’s invested in Tesla. Incredible stupidity. My dad is one of them. Tells me to ignore politics for investing but fails to realize politics massively impacts Tesla as an investment.

It is very rare that a good engineer becomes a good business manager. Edit: I'm referring to Afshar.

Particular-Break-205 2025-06-26 16:19

I feel bad for sales teams. Your job is to sell but sometimes the product just sucks and you get the blame lol.

[deleted] 2025-06-26 16:20

Yeah the sales won't recover until both Musk and Trump is gone.

Wonder if this is smart on Elon’s part, considering he wants to make everything look Rosy before the shareholders vote on his 50 billion compensation package in a few weeks.

delaware 2025-06-26 16:23

This is a guy who fired his extremely loyal and hardworking personal assistant of 12 years because she asked for a raise. Dude will suck you dry and then throw you overboard without a care.

Lazy-Elderberry-3867 2025-06-26 16:23

Care to share some of those stories? 👀

Wonderful-Run-1408 2025-06-26 16:23

It's literally Elon. I will not buy another Tesla if Elon is in charge. And I've only owned Teslas since 2014. My current is a 2023 X and I bought that just as Elon was going off the rails (in fall of 22). I almost didn't buy it. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have. That's hindsight. I can't imagine the Tesla board trying to give Elon $50 million (or was it billion) still? And are they still trying? The board should have fired Elon.

[deleted] 2025-06-26 16:23

Poozipper 2025-06-26 16:27

I would think a common rule in business is to not alienate your customers with your political opinions. Musk did it first to the right wing and secondly to the left wing.

lump77777 2025-06-26 16:30

I think it was $65 billion. I share your opinion of Elon, but 80% of the stock’s value is tied to his cult of personality. Mind-numbing, but the board knows this.

bonfuto 2025-06-26 16:31

There were news stories about insiders selling. Maybe they have enough money from the stock sales that they don't have to work if Musk fires them, so they don't have to worry about him tanking their reputation.

"declining sales in both regions and the electric vehicle brand’s falling popularity" I wonder why that is?

Rolling_Pugsly 2025-06-26 16:36

"controversial salutes." Tesla, and all United States media

Rolling_Pugsly 2025-06-26 16:38

I've long suspected this. Anyone with real talent isn't going to put up with hostile (and often incompetent), micromanaging and would likely leave for greener pastures.

EdOfTheMountain 2025-06-26 16:39

Stock options are normally a powerful incentive to remain employed. In case of Tesla stock however…

GreatCaesarGhost 2025-06-26 16:40

I'm sure it's like many other high-paying sweatshops: you go in knowing that you'll likely burn out or be fired within a few years, but hoping that the pay and resume material will be worth it.

Iintendtodeletepart2 2025-06-26 16:41

Yes they did. Sort of illuminating is not it.

RadiantMog 2025-06-26 16:42

Rolling_Pugsly 2025-06-26 16:43

*and I bought that just as Elon was going off the rails (in fall of 22)...* Anyone that paid attention saw through this long before then. Issues with The Boring Co. should have blown the lid off that fraud, and that was 2016 or so.

NotFromMilkyWay 2025-06-26 16:44

The board is filled with his people. It will never do its job. And he will still be the major shareholder and profits go to him, no matter if he is in charge or not.

LiquidJ_2k 2025-06-26 16:44

Omead was Musk’s fixer. I guess the fixer got fixed today!

avoozl42 2025-06-26 16:47

He's always blaming someone else

Rolling_Pugsly 2025-06-26 16:48

He wasn't "hired." He bought into the already established company, and then paid extra to have the title of "founder" added to his title. Even at this time, and with all the exposure, people on this sub fall for the lie.

Cant they also jump to another company if offered?

lovely_sombrero 2025-06-26 17:37

To be fair, it is not just the Nazi salute. Tesla had to cut prices in early 2024 because of low demand and at that time Elon Musk was still in good standing with the liberals, Biden was going around the world telling other countries to put 100% tariffs on Elon Musk's competition - and they did. But that was also all Elon Musk's fault, by focusing on stupid shit like FSD and Optimus, instead of investing into new car models.

FunFunFun8 2025-06-26 17:37

happymancry 2025-06-26 18:01

No, it’s a laborious and expensive process for companies; and the current admin is not in favor of them. So companies are very hesitant to hire. Plus the job market is rough, which makes it harder to justify an H1B when there is labor available locally. For H1B holders right now, a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.

catslikepets143 2025-06-26 18:03

I do know someone that left just like that. Department head , I’ll omit which department to keep it vague, but he said that he did take a significant cut in pay, but you can’t have stability at Tesla because Musk is not stable. He said the pay cut was worth the boost in mental health he received by no longer being employed by a lunatic

MarchMurky8649 2025-06-26 18:52

It's been obvious to me for a while this must be widespread. Even if it were possible, starting from where Tesla is now, to achieve i.e. true unsupervised FSD, for example, it would require a lot of highly competent people working in a well-managed way to do it. Well, I find it hard to believe many competent people will stay if they're there, or join if they're not, and as for well-managed, that seems even more unlikely from Mr. $4.20-a-ride, King of the Edge Lords, Musk.

I wonder if this is the real guy behind the Fake It Until You Make It culture at Tesla. One article said he was in charge of Giga Texas, Purchase of Twitter, Rebranding of X, Glass House, banished to SpaceX 2022, then snuck back in after everyone got fired or quit in 2024. Giga Texas has the lowest utilization rate ~25% of all the factories… failure. Purchase of Twitter… total cluster fuck legally and still has SeC on him about stock purchases. Rebranding to X… fucking joke includes the checkmark and advertising revenue losses. Glass House aka “Project 42”… board investigated and Omead magically left to go over to SpaceX. SpaceX… Starships all explode and Zero progress on moon landing NASA paid them for. Tom Zhu went back to China after Donald won… not a good look for a Chinese national to be running the bro-President’s US operations… deported? Then magically Omead becomes the new head of Americas and Europe. 🤔 Edit: I forgot… his latest failure: he was in charge of RoboTaxi rollout.

Difficult_Eye1412 2025-06-26 21:15

Love it. Dig that hole Elon. DIG.

m0viestar 2025-06-26 21:15

Wasn't he fired back in 2022? https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-21/tesla-tsla-executive-under-scrutiny-in-internal-probe?leadSource=reddit_wall

jmk5151 2025-06-26 21:29

from engineering to Ops leadership at an auto company is pretty slim pickings to begin with - especially without ice power train experience. I'm sure he's financially in a place to never work again and that tesla took care of him leaving though.

happymancry 2025-06-26 21:34

Is this a joke? Stephen goebbels Miller has a lot to say on the subject.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-06-26 21:51

PRANCING!!! And jumping up and down on stage like an obese special needs child.

Manning88 2025-06-26 22:04

He fired the wrong guy.

John_Lee_Petitfours 2025-06-26 22:12

I hear you. But also: capitalism.

Electrical-Sun6267 2025-06-26 22:18

I mean, it isn't JUST the Nazi salutes, he also cut so many corners of the Cybertruck that it is a punchline in the automotive industry. Maybe the rest of the Teslas are well made, but who's taking the chance that pieces are not going to fly off them. The Cybertruck tarnished the entire brand, it should have never been brought to market, but at least he can blame engineers for that. Despite the fact that he probably dictated the timeline and when the engineers suggested it wasn't ready he overrode the decision (pure speculation on my part, but we've seen his slapdash methodology with DOGE).

IntensityJokester 2025-06-26 22:22

His dad owns a hot popcorn company and his grandpa has a kgb connection, I recently learned.

IntensityJokester 2025-06-26 22:24

“teach the debate”

just_chilling_too 2025-06-26 22:48

You almost need to be fired , so people know your not a nazi and can get work

IceInternationally 2025-06-26 22:58

They can but is ridiculously hard that is why they normally they don’t move unless is between large companies

sullen_agreement 2025-06-26 23:18

well he cant fire himself

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-06-26 23:46

Elon got rid of this fixer just like Stalin got rid of Nikolai Yezhov. Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini all erased people who no longer served a purpose. Now Elon wants Grok “to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors”…

AstroRanger2084 2025-06-26 23:53

This departure is a good sign for the future of Tesla. There is good reason Omead’s internal nickname was “Darth Vader”.

Quirky_Tradition_806 2025-06-26 23:54

Mr. Omead Afshar failed to learn how to do the Nazi Salute!

Pale_Bookkeeper_9994 2025-06-26 23:57

Classic act of corporate assassination.

Pale_Bookkeeper_9994 2025-06-26 23:57

They are all trying to sell their stock or options first.

[deleted] 2025-06-27 00:00

Omead: "But, what did I do wrong?" Elon: "You fucked up - you failed to muzzle me."

techbunnyboy 2025-06-27 00:06

Awesome. More quality products coming ahead

Low_Shirt2726 2025-06-27 00:11

Also may be some waiting for stock to vest

SawtoofShark 2025-06-27 00:11

Musk created a gigantic stink (pun intended), and now he's trying to pretend it's someone else's fault? How on brand and part of why he'll never be accepted again: he never learns from his mistakes (and his mistakes are almost inconceivably horrific).

cantusethatname 2025-06-27 00:42

The punch bowl is empty at this party.

AntiqueFigure6 2025-06-27 00:43

In fairness, if you had integrity and acumen, and could accept the golden handcuffs implications, resigning after the Nazi salute would be a completely rational response from a senior Tesla executive for several different reasons.

fitblubber 2025-06-27 00:44

only 70% ??

ForeignLeopard1427 2025-06-27 00:48

He also fired the head of HR

[deleted] 2025-06-27 00:50

He should spill all the beans

Apex_Drifter 2025-06-27 01:12

He's probably going to fire the head of the China region soon. The Xiaomi YU7 just had 200,000 pre-orders in 3 minutes after its launch, and Model Y's sales in China are likely to plummet significantly. Remind Me! 300 days

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-27 01:25

IIRC Tesla does indeed have higher than normal turnover rate for executives

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-27 01:27

that’s interesting when the excuse Tesla defenders would give for high executive turnover was that it was normal in tech to change jobs constantly

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-27 01:28

His sister has a softcore pornography company called Passionflix

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-27 01:29

He’s a massive narcissist. Clearly comes from his mother

InvisibleBlueRobot 2025-06-27 01:37

We will see when numbers keep trickling out during earnings calls. He's actually managed to alienate both liberals and maga.  Perhaps it will only be Tesla fan-boys buying Tesla vehicles for the next year or two. I guess we will see!

FlipZip69 2025-06-27 02:08

If they keep holding though they will hold right till they are back down at a normal level. And that could be pretty low.

[deleted] 2025-06-27 02:35

I wonder who on earth has the _most_ misinformation published about them. What do you guys think? (Obviously, it’s not Elon, I’m genuinely wondering who)

BuckRowdy 2025-06-27 02:41

Doesn't really come as a surprise, does it? Elon has no accountability.

poop_grunts 2025-06-27 02:45

Did you have a stroke while writing this?

ThePensiveE 2025-06-27 03:32

You just described the MAGA playbook. Blame someone else for something (can be real or make believe), make it worse, then fix that just to the point where you can blame someone else for them again and repeat the cycle on an infinite death spiral.

HaywoodBlues 2025-06-27 03:40

Ya there ones who have enough sense to not work for a nazi? Long gone

Pavores 2025-06-27 03:54

Teslas also been burnout culture in terms of work hours for as long as it's been around. A few engineers I know who worked these left over having to pull 80 hour weeks. This is back in 2014-2017 ish.

Big-Bike530 2025-06-27 04:39

Blaming him, or realizing there's not a damn thing the guy can do?

DeedsF1 2025-06-27 05:02

He should fire himself first. What a dunce! Play with fire and get burnt!

Opcn 2025-06-27 05:03

ColorfulImaginati0n 2025-06-27 05:06

lemonfreshhh 2025-06-27 05:24

Somehow I thought of the scene from the Untergang movie where Hitler is screaming at his lieutenants in the bunker while you can her soviet artillery outside.

Own_Switch_7561 2025-06-27 05:34

And the dominoes come crashing down.

Carlos-Danger_ 2025-06-27 05:47

This says a lot. Omead was Elon’s right hand man for a long time. He’s taken falls for Elon before and has been investigated. I wonder if he’s just the fall guy again.

warblingContinues 2025-06-27 06:21

not just someone, but a 14-15 years long employee of your company.  Then firing them on a whim.

Worksnotenuff 2025-06-27 07:05

Lesson: don’t be a nazi that try out mind control devices by ruining peoples brains while you advocate global fascism and Nazism, and don’t celebrate your final victory by doing nazi salutes. Nothing is ever final.

tangouniform2020 2025-06-27 07:39

Softcore is still a thing? Is skinemax (Cinemax) still around, I guess that would be the market.

tsaico 2025-06-27 07:41

I remember that… that was around when he divorced his first wife too isn’t it? I think that was when he really went off the rails. Has she ever spoken out about him since?

Honesty64 2025-06-27 07:46

Predictable that Musk fires someone else when he caused the issues and should have been fired by the board weeks ago.

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-27 07:47

It’s not technically softcore porn to be clear, but it’s effectively the same idea https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passionflix Softcore might exist in places where hardcore porn is banned, not sure. I’m sure it’s still a thing. it’s a type of porn

StanchoPanza 2025-06-27 07:53

MASSiVELYHungPeacock 2025-06-27 09:31

Musk fires Omead Afshar when he should've fired himself.

MASSiVELYHungPeacock 2025-06-27 09:35

coffeeluver2021 2025-06-27 09:48

Sounds like Trump also.

YossarianGolgi 2025-06-27 10:13

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-06-27 11:30

Mass layoffs probably coming. After the shit show last year… HR is NOT the place to be.

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-06-27 11:33

What reasons? Did Elon say “Cut 20% of staff” and both of them said “No”?

AdministrationTop772 2025-06-27 12:05

A lot of them are probably just waiting for the next chunk of stock to vest. Honestly for some of these guys an additional year worked could be worth millions.

entropy512 2025-06-27 12:15

Yup, or are visa-holding immigrants that get deported if they leave and don't find a new employer to sponsor them within a fairly short period of time. It's my suspicion that the vast majority of the remaining staff at Xitter are H-1B holders aka indentured servants.

entropy512 2025-06-27 12:19

It's ridiculous that MAGAts defend that as a misunderstanding as if it weren't mere icing on a gigantic cake of evidence that he's a transphobic racist Nazi asshat, such as him penning an op-ed in Germany where he stated that only neo-Nazis could save Germany. Even without the Nazi salute his sales in Germany would still be fucked.

entropy512 2025-06-27 12:21

I do wonder if there's some screwup that the guy made that we don't know about. If there isn't and he's been listed by Tesla as "fired for cause", he's probably got a solid foundation for suing Tesla for wrongful termination.

entropy512 2025-06-27 12:28

Even before his politics went off the rails, Elon is why Tesla's customer service is so shitty and why my attempt to buy a Model 3 in 2020 was the second worst customer service experience of my life. Tesla lied to me every step of the way, and everyone ghosted me the moment they had my reservation number for their metrics. When Jon McNeill left, Elon absorbed his responsibilities instead of replacing him.

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-06-27 12:45

Omead: “I’m waaayyy better at PoE2 than you, Elon!” Jenna: “Elon. You are a total Noob! You got pwnd!” Elon: “You’re both fired!”

big-papito 2025-06-27 12:54

And Big Balls just resigned from DOGE. Coincidence? I don't think so!

Radarhog1976 2025-06-27 14:02

Tesla stock is down despite lift from all time market high! When the Nasdaq bubble pops, Tesla will crash.

jaimi_wanders 2025-06-27 14:10

SpaceX was constantly posting ads on Indeed too, which can either signal expansion or a revolving door…

banditcleaner2 2025-06-27 14:13

I believe he’s been holding for awhile, maybe since the low of 2023, but my main point to him is that the entire main customer base of Tesla actually hates Tesla now after the shift in elons politics. And Elon can’t really shift back either because he’ll piss off donald Trump, who may retaliate with various actions like removing government contracts, or encouraging federal agencies to look into Tesla or to look into Elon himself

jaimi_wanders 2025-06-27 14:15

He had given his pro-Moscow game away by October 2022, with his public Twitter call to surrender the occupied territories with a “referendum” and using the Kremlin line “Khrushchev’s mistake” of Crimea — before we learned he’d used Starlink as a Trojan Horse to sabotage Ukrainian operations there.

Secure_Guest_6171 2025-06-27 15:18

He's also hired a former GM Cruise executive to be Tesla's new VP of Autonomy

krkrkrneki 2025-06-27 15:42

I was eyeing Model S about three years ago. It was a 10 year old model at that time. I was like, surely they are gonna introduce a new model, anytime now. Let's just wait a bit more. Well, in the meantime, Elon went off the handle, so I'm glad I waited. No Tesla for me. There are now better alternatives.

SwagginOnADragon69 2025-06-27 16:06

If you truly believe hes a nazi, you have the brainpower of a goldfish

patmiaz 2025-06-27 17:57

Hmm. His x platform encourages Nazi links. He has referenced Nazi thinking and did a Nazi salute. You are the one wishing it wasn’t true.

sir_racho 2025-06-27 19:32

Has he tried firing himself 🧐

Taraxian 2025-06-27 21:03

Unlucky_Okra7784 2025-06-27 23:36

Elon’s fault= yes man Omead / scapegoat

Unlucky_Okra7784 2025-06-27 23:51

Elon’s unprofessional actions caused Tesla carnage

demonicbullet 2025-06-28 02:00

That last big exec sale made me think that's probably the game for a lot of them at the moment, wait for the next big chunk to vest and sell out instead of just covering taxes. My question is, who is gonna take dudes place? "Oh mr musk you want me to take that spot? Didn't you just fire the other guy in charge of sales right after you created one of the worst PR situations an American company has ever gotten into?" To even apply for that you have to be thinking about leaving the company for something else and are just title securing, I don't care how much you idolize someone, if you actually have the level of education and knowledge required for that position you know damn well what just happened and you know it'll probably happen again. I want to point out, he was fired days after it was reported the descent in sales has slowed down, I believe that was the second time (really the first whole time) that it has been reported since he removed his head from Trump's waistline. Now correlation doesn't always mean causation, but I don't think that was a coincidence.

hilldog4lyfe 2025-06-28 02:01

you mean lewds? that’s different.

fitblubber 2025-06-28 03:55

Yeah, it's pretty sad, but I'm not surprised. It's not good when you have a system that is toxic & actively disencourages people to enrol to vote & to vote.

Curious-Paper1690 2025-06-28 04:09

So Elon tanks the company due to personal shit and then fires one of the top people having been there almost 15 years. Sounds illegal and if not it should be

Ok_Television9703 2025-06-28 13:45

I think most, or at least the smart ones are. But just like with anything with good pay, it’s not easy.

ThetaDeRaido 2025-06-28 15:20

Musk was never fully *good* with the liberals. He had good points with going all-in on electric cars and defending Pride in 2018, but he also had bad points with his labor practices and corner-cutting. Gradually, the bad outweighed the good. Now, Musk is fully in supervillain mode, burning fossil fuels without pollution controls in black communities, killing black people and harming farms because USAID didn’t give him millions of dollars without due diligence, etc.

lovely_sombrero 2025-06-28 15:36

Musk is rich because of liberals, mainly in NY, CA and the federal government (Obama, Biden). He got an insane amount of handouts, tax cuts, subsidies, money from coupon trading schemes and direct contracts (SpaceX). Especially the Obama government was just throwing money at him, the same goes for the Dem-controlled state government in California at the time (2009-2017). >but he also had bad points with his labor practices and corner-cutting. Liberals absolutely didn't care about this and worshipped him. Liberal media also gave him billions in free advertising, repeating his lies verbatim. Maybe you are thinking about leftists, who have hated Musk forever.
