It really isn't great as a truck if you want to do more serious truck things.
However, I think it is still a great vehicle with a ton of utility for 90% of truck owners who never actually fully utilize their truck's capability anyway.
Frankly most trucks are used as giant metal toys and I think that is perfectly fine as long as you embrace it which I think the cybertruck does.

InterstellarChange
2026-02-20 16:51
Inflation doesn't exist in a bubble. 2019 people had a lot more buying power than today.
Inflation also means everything has gone up and wages are flat with inflation, so all the rising costs of food, services, housing, medical, gas & power that have risen far beyond the rate of inflation wipe out any gains in income growth.
Restaurant costs before tip has gone up 35% since 2019. Starting couple avg down payment on a home went from 58% of their total income in 2019 to 70% today.
Unless you're making 30-40% more than you did in 2019, you have far less buying power than you did in 2019.

Agree. I love mine. I'm a DIY suburban guy who loathes the Cybertruck name but otherwise enjoys the retro sci-fi DeLorean aesthetic.
I find it not only surprisingly easy to maneuver and comfortable as hell, but also more than capable at hauling firewood, saplings, mulch, curbside finds, estate sale ellipticals/patio furniture, towing log-splitters & small trailers, etc. It also is fantastic for camping and tailgates, and it powers my home during blackouts.
You just have to be comfortable with opinionated people who've never (or barely) used one telling you about how it's actually not good for doing things you are already doing with it regularly.
Towing long-distances is where it falls short of conventional pickup performance but I usually don't drive more than 250 miles away in the average year so it's not been a problem.
Also, a lot of people find it ugly and seem to need you to know they find it ugly. They have a strong urge to convince you their opinion should also be yours.
I know many people are (understandably) angry about the state of affairs in the USA and it's unfortunate that this thing has become their lightning rod. This too shall pass.
But FWIW, I do agree it seems like Elon lost the plot somewhere in 2019.

2026-02-22 08:29
The sales do tell a story. The CT was the second best selling EV truck in 2025 behind the F150 Lightning. This is inspite of the cheapest trim being 80k and the Lightning being near 50k. Used CTs are holding at 70k and Lightnings are reselling around 40k. Clearly there is high demand for a cheaper CT, and despite the highly vocal detractors, a appreciation for how it looks (enough to get 2 million preorders).
Callierhino
2026-02-22 08:48
Most pre orders got cancelled, they had a lot of recalls, CT only made up 0.67% of truck sales, in 2025 CT sales dropped by 48% over 2023, the range is much less than what promised, they are sitting with around 10 000 new trucks in inventory that are not selling, new trucks like the Silverado EV are eating into CT sales, just because a CT is on the market for 70k it does not mean it is going to sell, used car dealers are less willing to hold CT in inventory, owners are seeing a 35-45% drop in value in the first 12 months of ownership.
Look if you like the thing, go for it, but it is not a sales success by any measure. When it was new there was a lot of hype, but that quickly died down
Present-Ad-9598
2026-02-22 09:41

Team-Rocketto-Dan
2026-02-22 11:39
It's not a success. But for the high price it sells for and despite it's long list of recalls, it is outperforming the EV truck segment. Now compared to the entire Truck segment, yes, it is mediocre, and comparing Tesla's sales goals also underperforming. But it's holding up better than expected against other EV Trucks. If that's not good enough, you'd have to concede that EV trucks are a failure as a whole, and that they have no business competing against proper ICE trucks.
Callierhino
2026-02-22 12:00
I would consider EV trucks a fail

HermesPassport
2026-03-04 21:05
Your presumption that there is anything different with the engineering of the truck specific to towing is probably wrong (just an equation). Do I think they would spend money to introduce a lower priced vehicle with hopes of selling more units while still being profitable...absolutely and welcome to the auto industry.
I also think the focus on towing, especially with an EV, is something that manufacturers recognize as not being meaningful and is more for bragging rights vs actual demand.
