They're a legal requirement during testing I believe. They'll be drive by wire, so could even be as simple as clip in place and plug a USB cable in. It'll be the same for a pedal box, if they even have to bother. If they could get away with a couple of paddles on the steering wheel then that would make more sense, as they're going for emergency takeover not long distance driving ergonomics.

IMHO they are also testing some sort of model 2

Never understood this form factor for a 'cab'. 2 doors? minimal storage? Something like a small crossover is what a cab should be.

I don't get it either, why go to the expense of developing an entirely new vehicle when your existing vehicles would work better for this application.

So what, is this really going to be twice as efficient as a Model 3/Y to justify the development costs and/or cost savings of the final vehicle. Such a half baked idea.

Even if it was 20% more efficient it would still be worthwhile, at the scale they're aiming for. But the all-in cost advantage will likely be significantly greater than that, making it a no-brainer. This car will drastically lower the cost of point-to-point transportation.

Because this will allow much cheaper rides and will be sufficient for the vast majority of rides.

If a ride has more requirements, they can just send a Model Y or something. Cybercab is for the vast majority of rides, not every single ride. It will make the vast majority of rides much cheaper.

If they release this in europe with steering wheel and mirrors, I'd get one. Perfect commuter car. Model 2 (Cybercab) to and from work, Model Y for the family.

The storage is actually pretty ridiculously large for a car that size.

Could be as the unboxed design can easily be replicated on the line with a different model

while it seems large it's neither square nor centered in the rear of the vehicle so a good amount of the available storage is center and forward making it difficult to reach from the hatch.

I think that is great news though because this would give them the option to rework it as a regular, low cost car for markets like China and Europe. It is likely a fly by wire so it could be just an optional add on.

I get it. That's what the ride share companies do and that's required by law but I haven't seen any mention of it in the trials of the cybercab.

It's neither a microcar suitable for EU city driving nor a sports car which has built in comprises. It's a taxi. You have to go to south asia or very old cities with small streets to find small taxis.

CA valley is hit with crazy fog right now. I'm not sure how only cameras system will assist these cab during these conditions? My Telsa keeps popping the messages about camera not being visible.

Robotaxi doesn't really exist. There are a few dozen cars in Austin and Elon promised 500 by the end of 2025 and a 1000 in SF (there are something like 100). So it's not material if they have one or two model Ys operating.

First of all, they don't have "one or two". There are currently 47 Model Ys in the fleet in Austin. So it does exist. It's small-scale right now, sure, but it exists, whether you like it or not. That's besides the point anyway. You said you haven't seen it even in trials, but Model Ys are literally live in the service today.

Yeah, by Sandwich83's logic, there'd be no reason for Chevy to build anything other than a Suburban. It's an existing vehicle and can fit more people, right? So why not use it for everything? Why differentiate products at all, ever, if the maximalist product can do everything?

The back seems quite large but from the video walkarounds the space is a bit of a weird shape so it looks like it will hold a good amount of luggage but not maybe strange shapes etc due to width and height variations.

yes it varies by location but in most cities with downtowns it's 85-90%. That being said there aren't any other US services where you might have to think about it to call for a 3 person car or something that can get you to the airport with a reasonable amount of luggage.

I'm actually thinking that maybe to meet current US regulations the initial cybercabs might ship with steering wheels and supervised FSD but have all the hardware so that in theory they can eventually be upgraded to unsupervised. It would be consistent with the approach of let's ship the hardware as fast as we can even if the software isn't ready approach.
