Advice on basic BYD

_Gnavin_ | 2025-12-04 04:47 | 22 views

I'm researching my first EV and first brand new car, and I'm interested in the BYD range because they're in my budget (\~$30-40k AUD) and have the AC charger, so I don't have to install a fast charger. I wanted to ask about any advice on what models people recommend, if there's anything coming out that I should wait for, or if there are certain times of year that are better to buy (eg annual sales)?

>and have the AC charger, so I don't have to install a fast charger. Every EV has AC charging. Essentially nobody is installing a DC charger at home.

If you are set on BYD and you are aiming for $30-$40k i think there’s not much new EVs to expect. They just introduced Atto 1 and Atto 2 and i think they need to take a break before adding more to the market. There might be more PHEV variants coming though but i think EV lineup is nearly complete.

I think they call it mobile charger vs wall charger, both are AC, neither are “fast charging” even 22kwh 3-Phase Wall Charger isn’t considered “fast” charging.

If you live in Europe, they are shifting their OS to Android Automotive with Google Automotive Services (so Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play Store preinstalled). First one to sport it will be the new Atto 2 DM-i. In Mexico it is happening as well. Seen it first on the new Atto 8. So it could be a Worldwide transition, except in China. Expecting all new models / facelifts coming in 2026 to wear the new OS.

As a BYD Atto-3 2025 Extended model I can tell you you won't come close to the claimed range. Around the city 10 to 15% less. On freeways, 25% less easily.

Atto 2 is the best value option at the moment, and it looks good, good tech and it looks like they started deliveries. But keep in mind that it has a 51kWh battery, good for 345km WLTP which is realistically be around 280km, which is plenty for a 1h trips and back. If you want a bit more range, have a look at used Atto 3 extended range with a 60kWh battery. If you can stretch it a bit there is Geely EX5 complete for 43,5k driveway. It is a bigger car and 60kWh battery, good for 300-350km

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the dolphin. Extended range is $41k OTR and currently has a 1.8% apr finance offer til end of December. We're jumping on it

Where did you read it? Do we expect old model to get migrated to adnoird automotive too? I'm getting the BYS seal and it would be a shame a car bought in December 2025 wouldn't be updated

You can see the apps running on many Atto 2 DM-I reviews on youtube. Not expected to be retroactive since the new OS is also hardware dependent. Source: https://www.autonocion.com/byd-atto-2-dmi-android-automotive-asistente-ia/

I bought the Dolphin Surf a few months back, very affordable. The I got the upgraded model which has about 190 miles range. Very fun to drive, spacious inside (4 full seats). Would absolutely recommend.

Deepal S05 and S07, both Electric and extended range are great valu either.

I think the question was narrowed down on BYD only! Hence my point above.

I've got an Atto 2, managed to get one of the first batch. For my style of driving, I find the WLTP estimates to be about right. But it very much depends on your style of driving (how much city vs how much rural vs how quickly you accelarate, etc). I almost bought a Dolphin but decided on the Atto 2 because it is slightly cheaper, bigger, and is newer tech.

Congrats! 2y ago I was torn between Dolphin for the size and Atto3 for better exterior design. I ended up picking Atto3, if I was buying now I would 100% pick atto2. It is the perfect and practical size and I would be ok with the smaller battery too.
