Not a fan of the cyber truck aesthetic normally, but this looks significantly better.

Cybertruck is really ideally suited as a police vehicle. I expect we will see more of this in the future.

How exactly? EV's in general are not suited to be police vehicles, they have tons of equiptment they have to run and the idle times for police vehicles is insane this was probably a spend it or lose it contract with the city

Tons of idle time is the ideal use case for an EV. you can run the AC for days in an EV. computers, radar, lights etc won't draw more than the AC.

Exactly! Cyber Truck is actually ideal for many job classes but suffers from a high price. I can actually see them being hot on the used market for contractors and such. For a Las Vegas cop car though CyberTruck should quickly pay for itself. This because you don't have to idle the engine to run the air conditioner.

I hate the Cybertruck with my whole heart. I have never seen one that looks cool, not even online. I have to admit, it makes a really cool looking cop car.

I'm thinking this should cost less for the PD to run over time. This because of all the energy wasted to run air conditioners which frank are required in the desert. Running a V8 to keep a different car cool has to be expensive.

You could idle computers and the AC for like 40h in a cybertruck before you’d need to plug it in - the officers eventually need to do a shift change or go to sleep and that’s the perfect time to charge it back up.

I am a contractor. We own 4 work trucks. I own a model X, but would never buy a Cyber Truck for contract work. Even if they were cheap on the used market, people would perceive them as expansive and begin to question my pricing. No one would bat an eye at an F150 lightning, but the looks of the cyber truck are a deal breaker.

Because sentry mode runs the very powerful HW3/4 computer. Poor design - would be better handing it off to a dedicated power power chip or even the AMD Ryzen (or even Intel) chip

The used price would have to come way, way down. A large engine will use a gallon of gas every two or three hours idling. So saving $20 per day in gas is nice but won't come close to covering a $50k premium for a Cybertruck.

Haha! We sometimes run product directly from our line to local customers. We own a pickup, van, and a box truck and sometimes employees will take their vehicles. One of our engineers wanted to take his Cybertruck over and the VP said no way, the customer would think we are charging too much. I have run product over in my Model 3.

I have always expected that they would be the EV police car of choice. Surprised there aren't more already. Almost all the cops in my town drive gas guzzling SUV's. I wonder how much this costs vs other cop cars.

I have a friend who always drives stupidly large vehicles for the tax write-off. I think it's 7000+ pounds or something. He had land rovers, but now got an EV hummer. He also ran out of battery in the first week.

More like 20-30k. Around me nothing but explorers, Durangos, and tahoes. Average shift uses 10-20 gallons according to Google. Even at 10 gallons that's 40 bucks plus the maintenance costs of a gas vehicle.

Nah. I know a few guys with F150’s and one with a Silverado. They’re envied. Only thing they have to hear is the occasional “look at moneybags” mock. You show up on a jobsite with a CT and you either get 1) a ton of shit from guys you know about driving a dumpster, or 2) a lot of polite curiosity that might flatter guys with no self awareness, but lots of jokes when they walk away.

Ford Explorers are not tanks at all. Its just this generation's 4 door full size sedan, which were the default cop car before the Explorer (Crown Vic). They dont really make full size sedans anymore because an SUV does everything it did but better. Other countries have smaller vehicles because they are poorer, or their roads are smaller, or that most cars there are small cars. No cop wants to sit in a small car for a shift, its murder.

it is failing indeed, but its not my fault. atleast our cars are safe, you dont get trapped in a lithium-ion fire and burn to death because you cant open the door or roll down the windows because the electronics are failing because the battery exploded and not being able to break the glass because its bullet proof. We only make EVs because market demand is forcing us to. Gasoline is safer than lithium batteries. Besides Diesel is still great.

I can reach through the sides of the truck to access tools in the center of the bed with the slide retracted. The CT wasn’t made with contractors in mind. Can someone buy one and play contractor, yes. But the majority of people are not gonna buy that for their businesses; Businesses which have already invested in ecosystems that are incompatible with the CT’s radical departure from trade norms. There’s actually a very real push going on right now to get them not only into police forces but all city utilities trucks. The savings in gas would be massive because of how long the others are left idling all the time.

That extra mass holding it to the ground and ability to quickly manipulate speed probably makes it very good at it.

Electric cars are the perfect use case for police. Sitting idle. Few quick accelerations to catch speeding. Charge it during lunch or if you've got some paperwork to do.

I don't know why Model 3s aren't used as govt vehicles, they would save tax payers so much money since there is little to no maintenance

I have a small insight at least in some aspects. I work on a military base, there is a requirement that the government can not choose favorites among brands. There has to be a somewhat even purchase amount between different suppliers for just about everything, as long as multiple places make it. The most common GSA provided EV (they handle vehicles for the government) is Tesla model 3s, by far. But there are quite a bunch of lightnings, some mach-e, some bolts, a few etransits. That's just for EVs, by far most vehicles for government where I am are still fossils Though it seems a bit odd to me seeing Korean cars.

I really dont think it would for a couple reasons depending on role. As a spec ops interceptor type thing, you'd have issues with range. You'd need a portable, preferably diesel generator to charge up all the trucks in a pinch. Totally feasible, but would spec ops really need a "budget option" or would they just use a purpose built vehicle like the LAT-V. As a standard vehicle, that aluminium frame has to go ASAP. Unlike steel, aluminium has a set lifespan, and random troopers beating on it for 50 years will end with cracked frames. In normal use it's not an issue, the frame doesn't actually take much stress in normal driving, but hauling, getting driven off road and the all important random hooning that will occur will pile on wear and tear much more aggressively than with a steel frame.

This looks sick, and might be the perfect use case. * Police are happy, as it is quicker, easier to PIT cars and maneuver than a regular SUV, and has bulletproof doors (9mm), and decent window strength. Apparently a lot * Civilians are happy, as they'll see it coming from a mile away and can act accordingly. * Environmentalists are happy as most of a police vehicle's usage is spent burning gas idling, while this, of course, doesn't have that problem. * Only opposition I see would be folk getting offended at the truck's affiliation to Elon, and criminals disliking the agility and durability of it.
