I love the creativity of all the various wraps and designs folks have done to their trucks, but after a year, I’m just super happy not caring about the exterior. It still looks brutally utilitarian, which is what I wanted and has held up just fine. Guess we’ll see what it looks like in 5 years, but I’m not anticipating any issues here in the northeast.

RegulusRemains 2025-06-21 15:00

Door dings. Rock chips. It's nice not having to care about stuff like that.

specter491 2025-06-21 15:45

If the range was better I would buy one. But I'm not sacrificing a bunch of creature comforts just to buy the long range version. Maybe in 3-4 years it'll be worth it

calr0x 2025-06-21 16:13

This is where I'm at. By far my biggest hurdle is the range. My F-150 is like 600 mi in a 35 gallon tank. It's primarily our vacation vehicle just cuz we have two dogs and a bunch of stuff having to stop frequently and charge for long durations is just really difficult.

VirtualLife76 2025-06-21 16:33

Haven't followed close enough. How much is rust actually an issue on the CT?

Kuriente 2025-06-21 16:42

Range and cost per mile. If I had one, it would replace my Y as my commuter and road trip vehicle. A big advantage of very efficient EVs is cost per mile. CT isn't terrible in that department, but a big step back from where I've grown accustomed.

Cha_Dude 2025-06-21 16:44

It's not - they address it in the article to show how well they've tested it.

VirtualLife76 2025-06-21 16:57

The article touches on it, but what should happen vs reality are sometimes different.

oxooc 2025-06-21 17:03

I don't want to rage against the Cybertruck here, I actually kind of like it, but the problem with "Impact Resistant" body that doesn't deform is the crumple zone. In the event of an accident, it's important that the body absorbs as much energy as possible, otherwise the occupants will absorb it - and I don't think you want that to happen.

S3kelman 2025-06-21 18:05

and you don't think in 2025 they thought of that? 5 star NHTSA crash test rating don't worry

VirtualLife76 2025-06-21 18:17

Door dings? Why, because the metal is harder than other cars?

Greeneland 2025-06-21 18:35

There have been crashes. You can see for yourself the rumored crumple zone issues are not true. The pics all show very effective crumpling.

casino_r0yale 2025-06-21 19:38

Reality being the testing .. these aren’t math projections

VirtualLife76 2025-06-21 19:44

Reality is there are countless articles saying there's an issue, so I'm guessing there's something. That article doesn't go into enough details for anything conclusive. Hence the reason I asked, obviously that was a bad idea.

CommunismDoesntWork 2025-06-21 19:46

It has a crumple zone

RegulusRemains 2025-06-21 19:56

Yeah there's no way a car door will damage the stainless.

calr0x 2025-06-21 19:56

Not saying you're wrong but you just have to be objective in terms of the source is all I would say.. I haven't seen any rusty CT's yet..

VirtualLife76 2025-06-21 20:25

100% agree. I don't trust most sources these days, was hoping to get a better answer here. Only seen a handful where I'm at and no rust.

NerdyGuy117 2025-06-21 23:36

Very cool post, but why is it being downvoted?

NerdyGuy117 2025-06-21 23:41

It has a crumple zone, also it is the safest pickup truck NHTSA has tested: [https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2025/TESLA/CYBERTRUCK%252520(ALL%252520VARIANTS)/PU%25252FCC/AWD](https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2025/TESLA/CYBERTRUCK%252520(ALL%252520VARIANTS)/PU%25252FCC/AWD) Honestly, after comparing the F-150 Lightning report ([v14307R001.pdf](https://nrd-static.nhtsa.dot.gov/reports/vehdb/v10000/v14300/v14307R001.pdf)) to the Cybertruck report ([v15312R001.pdf](https://nrd-static.nhtsa.dot.gov/reports/vehdb/v10000/v15300/v15312R001.pdf)), I will not be interested in the F-150 Lightning at all.

NerdyGuy117 2025-06-21 23:43

Can you link to those articles? Curious to see them. There is surface rust, but that is just oxidation of iron particles on the panel rusting (not the panel itself). Those iron particles are easily removed. EDIT: Wanted to add there is a rust warranty for vehicles: [Vehicle Warranty | Tesla Support](https://www.tesla.com/support/vehicle-warranty). Also, the surface rust is mentioned in the owners manual: [Cleaning](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/GUID-65384C1F-86F2-44E8-A8BC-8A12E7E00A40.html#:~:text=These%20spots%20may%20appear%20as%20orange%20or%20brown%20%3Cem%3Erust%3C%2Fem%3E.). "Over time, you may notice contamination on the surface of the stainless steel body panels. These spots may appear as orange or brown rust. However, it is important to note that your Cybertruck is not rusting. "

NerdyGuy117 2025-06-22 11:57

It’s not just 5 star, but compare it any other truck. The Cybertruck is the safest. Almost half the forces exerted on the human body compared to in an F-150 Lightning

feurie 2025-06-22 14:52

And just any other little things that could fall on it. Small branches etc.

feurie 2025-06-22 14:54

Cool. How about you look at the crash results and see its extremely safe

feurie 2025-06-22 14:54

And in reality it isn't an issue.

GanksOP 2025-06-24 17:09

Cuz this is Reddit.
