Why make robots in a humanoid form? As far as providing a service ( cleaning your house, cooking dinner, folding clothes, working in a factory) - is it the most efficient form to accomplish task? Seems like maintaining balance on two legs takes a great deal of ingenuity that could be used for something more substantial.

Instead of designing a million different robots for a million different purposes (and ever modifying/increasing), we can design a single all-purpose robot which can replace the jobs many of us would do (and I'm sure many we can't). It won't be perfect, but it will be good enough.

I don't think auto wipers can ever work good with how it is right now. It's just always going to be unreliable trying to have ai determine rainfall amount from such a small area of the windshield. Tesla could just do what every other manufacturer with rain detection does and use a dedicated sensor(laser thing that can detect water by measuring refraction of light) that's insanely accurate, cheap, and doesn't require ai processing power. But they likely won't.

Because the entire world they have to operate in is designed for humans. Stairs, doors, machines, cars, tools & equipment, the house interieur like height of the kitchen top and so forth. This has been discussed many times and generally agreed a humanoid robot is the best shape to be multifunctional

I’ve found that my wipers seem to be working better lately. If anything they are a bit too aggressive now (i. e. jumping to high speed a bit too frequently). We’ve had a lot of rain here in NJ recently so lots of opportunity to use them.

But even if all jobs were taken by robots and we built the world around them, I would argue it's still arguably better to build a single general purpose robot for many occasions than tailor every single design every single time. Often, of course it's best to tailor, but not every time.

Agreed about the auto wipers, and they are making progress out of beta, e.g. robotaxi launch but the robot is not motionless nor is it powered by humans. They have made incredibly impressive progress in a very short period of time. minimizing that shows malace or ignorance at best.

The auto wipers thing is because at some point the driver won’t need to look out the windshield. The idea is to perfect their tech of keeping the camera clean since that’s what will be driving the car. I don’t like it but I get why Tesla is trying to do it.

But what's the advantage over a water detector? A water detector is very cheap and extremely reliable and doesn't need to waste ai processing power. Being more reliable means the camera vision would have a better view a higher percentage of the time. Tesla is just obsessed with camera only bs. Other sensor exist and are a great addition alongside cameras.

Our homes, cities, etc are built for bipedal beings with a high vertical aspect ratio, a manipulator somewhere around half the height (hand) Stairs, doorknobs, lawn mowers, grocery stores - all designed for this specific form factor of a human Should the all purpose robot have wheels? No, it couldn't do stairs. Insert any modification here - I'll tell you why it might not work Sure does it NEED to be exactly humanoid, with a head? No. Doesn't need a head. But this is, in theory, a lot more comforting that something that looks completely alien to us. We literally already have specialized robots for almost all industrial tasks. But it doesn't make sense for an individual to buy a specialized lawn mowing machine, a specialized grocery grabbing machine, a specialized car washing machine. Buy one machine, it can in theory do anything a human can do because of the form factor. So it may not be the most efficient for any given task but I believe it's the most efficient for its purpose - which is general.

How do you keep the two cameras clean that are mounted on the inside the windshield behind the rear mirror? Most cars have cameras at this location, and the wipers are designed to clean this area.

You can buy a crappy used Kia for that much and although it is useful getting you from point A to B it’s nowhere near as advanced as this leap in technology.

I have a 2020 model 3, can confirm, the wiper speeds make 0 sense, it has no clue how much rain there is, and it also just randomly goes when it's not raining at all. Probably once or twice per week.

Task “efficiency” is not the most important metric Tesla is going for. Commonality and manufacturability is. A bipedal robot can theoretically be a drop-in replacement for any manual job a human can do. It doesn’t matter that a hyper-specific robot can do something at 100 percent when a generalized robot can do it at 80 percent (at way less cost than a human doing it). When you can crank out millions of units of the same thing, this maximizes total work being replaced.

Those robot lawn mowers are pretty cool though.

Early models are built for development and at most pre-production deployment to a factory environment. Here easy access for troubleshooting and maintenance is more important. Once they get them dialed in and eliminate common repair or maintenance concerns I would expect they'd produce a consumer model that covers all the moving parts perhaps even in a flexible skin that is able to eliminate pinch points and dust intrusion entirely.

A simple Google search would have proven you wrong. Why should anyone waste time trying to convince you of something you obviously refuse to accept anyways? Luminar LiDAR arrays are sold at ~ 500-1000USD. Sure, you may need multiple, but that’s actually pretty cheap already. The entire Waymo Gen 5 sensor suite costs 9300 USD per car, and apparently their gen 6 suite is even cheaper. And that 6th gen suite consists of thirteen cameras, four lidar sensors, and six radar units.

I just wish the auto hi beams would work. I often drive on very dark roads with no traffic, but occasional highly reflective signs. The high beams will go on, light up a sign, and immediately go off again. If I'm in FSD, I have to drop back to manual to get control of the lights. If I don't do so, the FSD slows to a crawl due to the low beams not providing light far enough ahead.

Optimus is the top reason for me to staying bullish on my 2019 long position 🚀🌕

Damn. Mine only wipes at rain, fog, dust, or mist. Sometimes when I pull into my garage it wipes once but it’s never an issue, so I guess that counts. When it rains I havnt had a single instance of it NOT wiping

But that applies to all cars, not just Tesla. The % of parts that come from here is what matters. Tesla’s lowest is 60%, their highest is 75% and the numbers will only get better. If you include Mexico, those numbers are 80% and 95%, respectively. Ironically, foreign brands have some of the most American made models out there. And guess how many of the top 25 are from American brands. Just one, Tesla. There’s a reason why cutting trade agreements with China or making imports significantly more expensive would cause a recession. Everybody in this country relies on products that aren’t produced with the best of ethics, knowingly or unknowingly. There are no pure local cars, and if there ever is Tesla will probably be the first.

I see a distinct lack of hyper alloy combat chassis. Microprocessor controlled. Very tough. I guess they can’t make stuff like that. Not for another year.

They are over represented as a problem, but it’s still weird it happens at all. I get leery driving around the woods because it’ll go off randomly when the sun flashes through the trees. Especially since it’ll end up smearing bug residues I hadn’t noticed with no washer fluid. They seem to have a photocell in the sensor cluster anyway. So they have real estate for a simple rain sensor where it would matter.

There's some chance HW4 mostly fixes it and all us early adopters are getting random wipes more and poor performance in rain compared to newer vehicles. Realized recently that's very true for FSD performance.

Well that’s why we would put the holes in a more private location, away from where rocks and sticks and stuff could get in. Can add some lubrication within the holes to make sure dirt doesn’t get in, and then We can also protect the holes with some type of cloth or thin fabric.

Meh, I think he's gotten much farther with vision only than most would have expected. I agree that in the near term LIDAR for FSD and laser for rain sensing would be better but I admire his principled psition that humans can drive vision only so can Teslas. If he is effective, others will follow.

It does this currently I believe, Tesla shared a video and spoke about it but I can’t remember where or when. That’s a no brainer though, if they ship it as a product, it will definitely do that.

I know you're being sarcastic to belittle the product, but think this through (using your $20K price tag). If it could really do your laundry (move from laundry basket to washer, then to dryer, then fold/hang *most* of your clothes) then it also would have the dexterity/ability to vacuum/mop floors/stairs, organize kids toys, load/empty dishwasher, etc. Currently my wife and I pay $250/visit for someone to come to our house and clean, which we usually do monthly (we'd do it weekly or every other week, but it's a headache cleaning all the kids' stuff up ahead of time). If there was a robot that could organize my kids' toys and then also clean whatever part of my house needed cleaning *every single day*, I'd pay a one time fee of $20K for years of work. Cheap? Not at all, but looking at what I pay someone to come to my house to just clean I'm already spending $3,000/year. If I had them come twice a month it would be $6,000/year. And if weekly (like some people do), it would be $12,000/year - and that's just for cleaning after we've already de-cluttered the house! Now I'm realistic and know this isn't going to occur anytime in the very near future, but 10 years from now I'm ready to write the check.

For rain, though, Tesla is using a camera with a focus of infinity to determine what's happening 1cm away. Stare into the distance. Place your finger in front of your eye. You'll notice that it's impossible to read your fingerprint. That's the challenge of the wipers.

Why make the cyber truck? Why take out lidar? Why try to make a hyperloop?

Imagine being able to create a human-like machine with room for improvements and still giving it knees...
