Tesla owners: I’d love self driving that’s out of beta and auto wipers that actually work. Tesla: How about a motionless robot powered by our interns remotely, best I can do.

Samesone2334 2025-06-18 10:56

Auto wipers that work 😅 I thought I was the only one ha, low wiper mode in a downpour is 🤌

Why make robots in a humanoid form? As far as providing a service ( cleaning your house, cooking dinner, folding clothes, working in a factory) - is it the most efficient form to accomplish task? Seems like maintaining balance on two legs takes a great deal of ingenuity that could be used for something more substantial.

[deleted] 2025-06-18 10:59

twinbee 2025-06-18 11:01

> is it the most efficient form to accomplish task? Probably not. But the point is it can be generalized and mass produced relatively cheaply. Instead of designing a million different robots for a million different purposes (and ever modifying/increasing), we can design a single all-purpose robot which can replace the jobs many of us would do (and I'm sure many we can't). It won't be perfect, but it will be good enough.

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 11:02

I don't think auto wipers can ever work good with how it is right now. It's just always going to be unreliable trying to have ai determine rainfall amount from such a small area of the windshield. Tesla could just do what every other manufacturer with rain detection does and use a dedicated sensor(laser thing that can detect water by measuring refraction of light) that's insanely accurate, cheap, and doesn't require ai processing power. But they likely won't.

TrickyElephant 2025-06-18 11:02

Because the entire world they have to operate in is designed for humans. Stairs, doors, machines, cars, tools & equipment, the house interieur like height of the kitchen top and so forth. This has been discussed many times and generally agreed a humanoid robot is the best shape to be multifunctional

issomewhatrelevant 2025-06-18 11:03

Just like their stubbornness for their own camera system vs LiDAR technology.

Overall_Affect_2782 2025-06-18 11:08

Yep, it needs a rain sensor. You know, like every other car on the market.

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 11:08

Yup, they seriously hinder themselves because of their stupid obsession with camera only tech.

issomewhatrelevant 2025-06-18 11:11

It honestly is the old adage of that Simpsons episode with brilliant engineers surrounding Homer (Musk) as he designs the cars of his dreams.

[deleted] 2025-06-18 12:03

I’ve found that my wipers seem to be working better lately. If anything they are a bit too aggressive now (i. e. jumping to high speed a bit too frequently). We’ve had a lot of rain here in NJ recently so lots of opportunity to use them.

twinbee 2025-06-18 12:09

But even if all jobs were taken by robots and we built the world around them, I would argue it's still arguably better to build a single general purpose robot for many occasions than tailor every single design every single time. Often, of course it's best to tailor, but not every time.

10xMaker 2025-06-18 12:10

Looks cool. I think they did a major redesign of the hands after this version.

bobstribe 2025-06-18 12:20

Not a single hole?

[deleted] 2025-06-18 12:21

Agreed about the auto wipers, and they are making progress out of beta, e.g. robotaxi launch but the robot is not motionless nor is it powered by humans. They have made incredibly impressive progress in a very short period of time. minimizing that shows malace or ignorance at best.

Jbsmitty44 2025-06-18 12:26

Gosh I can’t wait to spend $20k on one of these and make it fold my laundry

DaemonCRO 2025-06-18 12:27

We have that. They are in factories welding shit, and so on. This is a robot designed to work in human centred environment.

Ernapistapo 2025-06-18 12:27

Same for me. I haven’t thought much about the wipers lately, which means they are working as expected.

Present-Ad-9598 2025-06-18 12:30

What’s wrong with auto wipers?? Mine work fine, my only complaint is the wipers don’t move fast enough at the highest speed level

kylexy32 2025-06-18 12:34

Buying the best legally produced products and services makes you an effective participant in capitalism improving the standards of living for everyone.

cheeseshcripes 2025-06-18 12:35

Look at what they need to even mimic a fraction of our power!

LongApprehensive890 2025-06-18 12:37

The auto wipers thing is because at some point the driver won’t need to look out the windshield. The idea is to perfect their tech of keeping the camera clean since that’s what will be driving the car. I don’t like it but I get why Tesla is trying to do it.

socialistsRSubhuman 2025-06-18 12:38

throw it in the trash where it belongs. no humanoid robots and NO AI

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 12:39

But what's the advantage over a water detector? A water detector is very cheap and extremely reliable and doesn't need to waste ai processing power. Being more reliable means the camera vision would have a better view a higher percentage of the time. Tesla is just obsessed with camera only bs. Other sensor exist and are a great addition alongside cameras.

would_bang_out_of_10 2025-06-18 12:44

Don’t forget automatic mirrors that aren’t on a literal timer and can handle DST shifts.

TheBestPieIsAllPie 2025-06-18 12:44

cheeseshcripes 2025-06-18 12:45

Buying the most ethically produced products and services also makes you an effective participant in capitalism but improves the standards of everyone even more, especially in terms of those that actually produce the products and the environment we all share.

Responsible_Bee9448 2025-06-18 12:48

Not impressed until I see it moving around on its own in the showroom signing me up for a test drive. All I see is a metal mannequin.

Because the chinese factory workers have such a high standard of living? Buying and supporting locally is much more beneficial for all

kylexy32 2025-06-18 12:50

So the argument is teslas manufacturing or employment processes are unethical?

Jaws12 2025-06-18 12:50

Yeah, but even if it ends up not mattering, I plan to be nicer to any house robots we may own in the future, just in case.

There is certainly that, and other things.

kylexy32 2025-06-18 12:59

Surely there are examples of negligence and an abundance of labor lawsuits against them, I just don’t see these in quantities outside a standard of deviation from any given Fortune 500 company. Is your argument GM or Ford operate more ethical operations?

Skylak 2025-06-18 13:00

It's assembled in the US. Your circuit board is not made in the US. Maybe google where car parts are from? Or yet alone lithium, cobalt or nickel

Once again unsure if this is satire 😂 Of course there are raw materials and components still sourced internationally, but I do implore you to look into the % of domestically sourced components, raw materials, and especially labor for any vehicle manufacturer in the US. The numbers genuinely are not close Plenty of reasons to hate Tesla (misleading marketing practices, poor customer service, dropped promises…) Domestic manufacturing ain’t one of em

[deleted] 2025-06-18 13:35

And phantom braking seems to have disappeared for me was well, for a while now.

Jace265 2025-06-18 13:35

Our homes, cities, etc are built for bipedal beings with a high vertical aspect ratio, a manipulator somewhere around half the height (hand) Stairs, doorknobs, lawn mowers, grocery stores - all designed for this specific form factor of a human Should the all purpose robot have wheels? No, it couldn't do stairs. Insert any modification here - I'll tell you why it might not work Sure does it NEED to be exactly humanoid, with a head? No. Doesn't need a head. But this is, in theory, a lot more comforting that something that looks completely alien to us. We literally already have specialized robots for almost all industrial tasks. But it doesn't make sense for an individual to buy a specialized lawn mowing machine, a specialized grocery grabbing machine, a specialized car washing machine. Buy one machine, it can in theory do anything a human can do because of the form factor. So it may not be the most efficient for any given task but I believe it's the most efficient for its purpose - which is general.

MikeRizzo007 2025-06-18 14:06

Comes with a 10 hour battery but you can’t charge it 100% and can only use 60% of the total battery capacity, and it consistently uses more power that expected. Do we just keep it plugged in the entire time?

LongApprehensive890 2025-06-18 14:16

The water sensor is irrelevant when the only goal is to keep the camera free of obstruction.

graphic_fartist 2025-06-18 14:22

I can’t wait to have sex with one.

TheMartian2k14 2025-06-18 14:22

Shilling for Big Camera huh? What a crap take.

TheMartian2k14 2025-06-18 14:24

The goal is to also not look stupid with your wipers going 100mph for a light drizzle. It’s directing and wears out your wipers faster. This is the problem with going camera only.

kazaaksDog 2025-06-18 14:28

Why would anyone want something that looked that terrifying in their home or business?

R0sinhuntard 2025-06-18 14:29

Reddit is not the place to go if you’re inspired by the work Tesla it’s doing

JustACanadianGamer 2025-06-18 14:37

Maybe older LiDAR, but the new ones are definitely better than cameras

LavishLawyer 2025-06-18 14:42

I don’t think you’ll need to use it for 6 hours straight all the time. At least not for its intended use. I just want it to clean my home and do all the chores while I’m gone. I don’t think I even want to see this creepy thing in action while I’m home.

LavishLawyer 2025-06-18 14:45

Did you not see snakes on a plane? Why are people still flying overseas?

eugay 2025-06-18 15:02

It's only a problem on reddit. Works roughly as reliably as a dedicated sensor.

serrimo 2025-06-18 15:04

When the visor goes down, you'll be in for a treat

genuinefaker 2025-06-18 15:05

How do you keep the two cameras clean that are mounted on the inside the windshield behind the rear mirror? Most cars have cameras at this location, and the wipers are designed to clean this area.

cavey00 2025-06-18 15:12

Right? Its price tag is out of my range but if I had the money, it would definitely be tripping around my house “helping”. I don’t even think it’s too expensive for what you get either. You can buy a crappy used Kia for that much and although it is useful getting you from point A to B it’s nowhere near as advanced as this leap in technology.

I would absolutely pay 20k for a robot that could do my laundry. I have zero faith that Tesla will make a robot that can actually do laundry, but it would be nice.

Potential4752 2025-06-18 15:16

That’s a good point. I can’t imagine that these are safe around kids.

LongApprehensive890 2025-06-18 15:20

That’s exactly my point. In teslas eyes the wipers are to clean the cameras view not the drivers.

st1ckofbutter 2025-06-18 15:22

I’m so excited to know that this is just the beginning. Every generation will be more human like.

LittleYak1577 2025-06-18 15:33

I have a 2020 model 3, can confirm, the wiper speeds make 0 sense, it has no clue how much rain there is, and it also just randomly goes when it's not raining at all. Probably once or twice per week.

harda_toenail 2025-06-18 15:51

Make it like TARS from interstellar. Or Gerty from moon.

SHKEVE 2025-06-18 15:52

if home robots become a thing we’re going to have to deal with spending money on dbrand robot skins. people will dress up their robots to fit holidays and seasons.

harda_toenail 2025-06-18 15:52

Isn’t lidar super affordable these days? And they won’t use it probably just because the ceo said it wasn’t necessary a few years ago and won’t back off his stance

tenemu 2025-06-18 15:57

It's hip and cool to say incorrect facts to belittle Teslas achievements. Or to say one bad aspect means they are bad at engineering.

Quin1617 2025-06-18 16:02

“Oh so you wanna be snarky!?” [EXTERMINATE](https://youtu.be/mxD-5z_xHBU?t=11)

spartan22891 2025-06-18 16:03

Task “efficiency” is not the most important metric Tesla is going for. Commonality and manufacturability is. A bipedal robot can theoretically be a drop-in replacement for any manual job a human can do. It doesn’t matter that a hyper-specific robot can do something at 100 percent when a generalized robot can do it at 80 percent (at way less cost than a human doing it). When you can crank out millions of units of the same thing, this maximizes total work being replaced.

TheMartian2k14 2025-06-18 16:10

Those robot lawn mowers are pretty cool though.

steveman0 2025-06-18 16:17

Early models are built for development and at most pre-production deployment to a factory environment. Here easy access for troubleshooting and maintenance is more important. Once they get them dialed in and eliminate common repair or maintenance concerns I would expect they'd produce a consumer model that covers all the moving parts perhaps even in a flexible skin that is able to eliminate pinch points and dust intrusion entirely.

Jace265 2025-06-18 16:20

They definitely are, reminds me of Honey I Shrunk The Kids cause that kid had the remote controlled one in the 90s movie

echoingElephant 2025-06-18 16:21

A simple Google search would have proven you wrong. Why should anyone waste time trying to convince you of something you obviously refuse to accept anyways? Luminar LiDAR arrays are sold at ~ 500-1000USD. Sure, you may need multiple, but that’s actually pretty cheap already. The entire Waymo Gen 5 sensor suite costs 9300 USD per car, and apparently their gen 6 suite is even cheaper. And that 6th gen suite consists of thirteen cameras, four lidar sensors, and six radar units.

cryptoengineer 2025-06-18 16:48

I just wish the auto hi beams would work. I often drive on very dark roads with no traffic, but occasional highly reflective signs. The high beams will go on, light up a sign, and immediately go off again. If I'm in FSD, I have to drop back to manual to get control of the lights. If I don't do so, the FSD slows to a crawl due to the low beams not providing light far enough ahead.

Super1pMe 2025-06-18 16:50

Optimus is the top reason for me to staying bullish on my 2019 long position 🚀🌕

miraculum_one 2025-06-18 17:05

Impressed that person could stand perfectly still for that long. /s

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 17:13

In that case having ai "look" for water is also irrelevant, just run the wiper 24/7

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 17:15

You have the new update with adaptive auto high beams? Bc for me those have been working like a dream. Literally seems like magic it dims to not blind people but I still see my part of the road fine, and I get flashed less also.

TheBestPieIsAllPie 2025-06-18 17:18

Top tier comment.

TobysGrundlee 2025-06-18 17:26

For lots of people, myself included, they will start wiping when there's no rain and not consistently start wiping when there is rain.

TobysGrundlee 2025-06-18 17:26

Those hands will do just fine for now.

Teknomekanoid 2025-06-18 17:30

I hate how unoriginal the name is. Is it that hard to think of your own cool robot name?

Present-Ad-9598 2025-06-18 17:36

Damn. Mine only wipes at rain, fog, dust, or mist. Sometimes when I pull into my garage it wipes once but it’s never an issue, so I guess that counts. When it rains I havnt had a single instance of it NOT wiping

Present-Ad-9598 2025-06-18 17:36

That’s wild, I havnt had that experience on my 2018 m3

ROFLetzWaffle 2025-06-18 17:45

I was half joking about getting one, then thought "man, these cost as much as a car... why am I not considering their cars?" That was a January topic. Picked up my first Model 3 in March 😅. I'm still considering Optimus for the masseuse feature alone. If you were to get one, what would you use it for?

ROFLetzWaffle 2025-06-18 17:47

What if the interns controlled the wipers?

EverythingMustGo95 2025-06-18 17:49

Because making it look cute will sell more. If it looked like an office robot, maybe with 1 arm to manipulate things, it might be more useful but it wouldn’t be cute. This even dances, that should be very useful for sales pitches.

cryptoengineer 2025-06-18 18:03

I wish. I was an early adopter - I have a 2019 M3.

Upbeat-Ad-851 2025-06-18 18:10

I am good with my FSD, in fact astonished how good it is since, from 6 years ago to what it is now on my model 3.

elementfx2000 2025-06-18 18:10

Same. Mine are quite good. Not perfect, but very good.

imhere8888 2025-06-18 18:29

GOA_AMD65 2025-06-18 18:42

I don't own a Tesla but am thinking about one. If the wipers don't turn on but you are using FSD, does it really matter?

Suspicious-Piano2288 2025-06-18 18:45

When the Sun hits your eye like a big drop of rain, that's a wiping. When the world seems to shine like it's 5 and glare is prime, that's a wiping. Beeps will ring, ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling And it'll sing "Pay attention"

Spudly42 2025-06-18 18:59

Wouldn't things get stuck in them? I was imagining an Optimus doing yard work for me and then seeing the feet with lots of open spots all over them seemed risky with rocks and sticks and stuff. Unless we're going to get shoes/clothes for them, which maybe makes sense?

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 19:18

Awe that sucks, I assume that year doesn't even have matrix headlights?

Quin1617 2025-06-18 19:26

But that applies to all cars, not just Tesla. The % of parts that come from here is what matters. Tesla’s lowest is 60%, their highest is 75% and the numbers will only get better. If you include Mexico, those numbers are 80% and 95%, respectively. Ironically, foreign brands have some of the most American made models out there. And guess how many of the top 25 are from American brands. Just one, Tesla. There’s a reason why cutting trade agreements with China or making imports significantly more expensive would cause a recession. Everybody in this country relies on products that aren’t produced with the best of ethics, knowingly or unknowingly. There are no pure local cars, and if there ever is Tesla will probably be the first.

Skylak 2025-06-18 19:37

>Everybody in this country relies on products that aren’t produced with the best of ethics, knowingly or unknowingly Which is all that matters. The guy said that capitalism is making everyone have a better live which is not true, that's all. Nothing else was mentioned by me. You are using talking points nobody mentioned

GrandEquivalent8828 2025-06-18 19:37

Stay long enough and Optimus will transform into Megatron

cryptoengineer 2025-06-18 19:46

The didn't come to US cars until a year or two ago. Heck, I don't even have an external speaker.

snark42 2025-06-18 19:46

> Works roughly as reliably as a dedicated sensor. Nonsense, where do you get this? My 2015 Toyota works flawlessly only when it rains and runs at a reasonable frequency for conditions. Same for my 2025 Volvo. My 2019 Model 3 randomly wipes when it feels like it (most frequently when driving into the sun) and rarely gets the wipe frequency right when it is raining.

[deleted] 2025-06-18 19:51

Right. I recall a post saying "FSD is more dangerous than ever" and they called out that FSD wouldn't go above 80 miles per hour. Its mostly nonsense on this sub. When you call it out as objectively false, the response is "bootlicker."

HiddenSuccession 2025-06-18 20:06

Haha I thought this was just mine 😂

LongApprehensive890 2025-06-18 20:06

That’d impact range/aero and wear the wipers faster. Not a good idea.

[deleted] 2025-06-18 20:41

illyay 2025-06-18 20:47

I see a distinct lack of hyper alloy combat chassis. Microprocessor controlled. Very tough. I guess they can’t make stuff like that. Not for another year.

LoogyHead 2025-06-18 21:10

They are over represented as a problem, but it’s still weird it happens at all. I get leery driving around the woods because it’ll go off randomly when the sun flashes through the trees. Especially since it’ll end up smearing bug residues I hadn’t noticed with no washer fluid. They seem to have a photocell in the sensor cluster anyway. So they have real estate for a simple rain sensor where it would matter.

Reminds me of a Tesla

BikebutnotBeast 2025-06-18 22:51

What about the price of the computer system to run all of the sensors? Waymo has stated that the cost of adding the Gen 5 sensor suite and compute system to vehicles is under $100,000, though this figure does not include the vehicle itself or retrofitting costs.

eugay 2025-06-18 22:56

I have an hour long video of my cybertruck reacting to various rain levels perfectly somewhere. I might be assed to upload someday

snark42 2025-06-18 23:06

There's some chance HW4 mostly fixes it and all us early adopters are getting random wipes more and poor performance in rain compared to newer vehicles. Realized recently that's very true for FSD performance.

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-18 23:24

Uhhh how is lidar ugly? It's even more discreet that the current cameras?

HipHopGrandpa 2025-06-18 23:34

No, but the book series is the best Sci Fi I’ve read in years.

Odd_Manufacturer_328 2025-06-18 23:48

Model x robot with crocs

GreenAppleGummy420 2025-06-19 00:26

Well that’s why we would put the holes in a more private location, away from where rocks and sticks and stuff could get in. Can add some lubrication within the holes to make sure dirt doesn’t get in, and then We can also protect the holes with some type of cloth or thin fabric.

TwinkAvery 2025-06-19 00:45

There’s already a gen 2 when we haven’t seen gen 1 walk the streets (ie, doing what they’re made for)??

CaravanShaker83 2025-06-19 01:31

That’s paid for DLC. ……

jay_sugman 2025-06-19 01:35

Meh, I think he's gotten much farther with vision only than most would have expected. I agree that in the near term LIDAR for FSD and laser for rain sensing would be better but I admire his principled psition that humans can drive vision only so can Teslas. If he is effective, others will follow.

TipSuspicious7239 2025-06-19 01:44

Maybe more than happy to test one out that would be cool!!!

skd00sh 2025-06-19 02:13

I'd lease one for $420/mo at 6.9%

Hate to be that guy but I think u got a bit too close & personal in the ass part of the video 😂

Imagine this robot being the new nanny

Realistic-Bother-815 2025-06-19 09:16

I think there are some videos out there where you can see it moves...

Realistic-Bother-815 2025-06-19 09:18

Because it's the only way to design a true general purpose robot to replace human workforce (home or at work).

PraiseTalos66012 2025-06-19 11:40

Omg your talking about the 360 roof mount lidar? Ya no one else is wanting that. Static lidar sensors are basically invisible and cheap af.

It would be cool if it recognized that it was low on battery and went back to the charging station to charge itself

bootha8 2025-06-19 13:48

As cool as this looks.. it's still oddly scary 😅

laughncow 2025-06-19 14:20

Would also want some way to evacuate the holes in case there's any kind of blockage

wilbertthewalrus 2025-06-19 18:22

Its a bizarrely stupid priciple as humans famously arent that good at driving lol

McPants7 2025-06-19 18:27

It does this currently I believe, Tesla shared a video and spoke about it but I can’t remember where or when. That’s a no brainer though, if they ship it as a product, it will definitely do that.

Osman_0077 2025-06-19 18:28

Wack

jay_sugman 2025-06-19 20:00

I don't think the vast majority of problems of human driving are related to vision though.

Dr_Pippin 2025-06-19 21:30

I know you're being sarcastic to belittle the product, but think this through (using your $20K price tag). If it could really do your laundry (move from laundry basket to washer, then to dryer, then fold/hang *most* of your clothes) then it also would have the dexterity/ability to vacuum/mop floors/stairs, organize kids toys, load/empty dishwasher, etc. Currently my wife and I pay $250/visit for someone to come to our house and clean, which we usually do monthly (we'd do it weekly or every other week, but it's a headache cleaning all the kids' stuff up ahead of time). If there was a robot that could organize my kids' toys and then also clean whatever part of my house needed cleaning *every single day*, I'd pay a one time fee of $20K for years of work. Cheap? Not at all, but looking at what I pay someone to come to my house to just clean I'm already spending $3,000/year. If I had them come twice a month it would be $6,000/year. And if weekly (like some people do), it would be $12,000/year - and that's just for cleaning after we've already de-cluttered the house! Now I'm realistic and know this isn't going to occur anytime in the very near future, but 10 years from now I'm ready to write the check.

DreadChylde 2025-06-19 21:31

You're joking, right? You don't believe that's the LiDAR Mercedes use in their Level 3 self-driving tech?

[deleted] 2025-06-19 22:40

I think companies can do two things at once. Self driving is an unsolved problem—like getting to mars. Maybe lower your expectations a bit. Or of course you can build what you want!

MustardCoveredDogDik 2025-06-19 22:52

Deadass thought the same thing

MustardCoveredDogDik 2025-06-19 22:55

The search and rescue bots are human sized because they need to fit a human through the escape route.

Jbsmitty44 2025-06-20 00:00

Not being sarcastic at all lol I would pay $20k for a robot that can do my laundry and put the toys away at the end of the day — that gives me an hour back each day with my kids. If it can fold laundry at launch, I’ll write a $20k check.

model333 2025-06-20 01:03

Oh, sorry, I completely misinterpreted your comment.

echoingElephant 2025-06-20 15:34

Maybe you can tell me how exactly I did that? The claim was „LIDAR is very expensive, 10.000USD+“. Waymos entire sensor stack, consisting of LIDAR, cameras and radar, costs less than 10.000USD. So no, I didn’t prove him right, and you only proved that you apparently can’t read.

Mikey06154 2025-06-22 02:10

pkelly517 2025-06-22 11:55

For rain, though, Tesla is using a camera with a focus of infinity to determine what's happening 1cm away. Stare into the distance. Place your finger in front of your eye. You'll notice that it's impossible to read your fingerprint. That's the challenge of the wipers.

JohnAnchovy 2025-06-22 13:35

Why make the cyber truck? Why take out lidar? Why try to make a hyperloop?

lievepwoes 2025-06-22 20:34

Imagine being able to create a human-like machine with room for improvements and still giving it knees...

goba101 2025-06-26 01:39

that is impressive, like you can tell teh complex design

sp3085 2025-07-13 11:04

All I want know is, can this robot cook?

endofsight 2025-07-19 19:39

Why limit the ability on humans? There are animals with echolocation that can orient much more confidently in dark environments (bats).
