BYD Sealion 5 DMI review
I read that the car is going to be launched in Australia early 2026, and there's a lot of skepticism about the aged looks or the fact that it's an old model. This is especially being pushed on certain youtube channels, wherein they review the car and casually throw the term - 'dated looks' throughout the video. I recently purchased the Sealion 5, base variant that recently came out in South East Asia, and would like to give my take on my experience so far as an owner. I was initially considering the Sealion 6, because of how popular the model is across the globe, and hadn't even known about the Sealion 5 until I visited the dealership. They had the high end variant available - with the panoramic sun roof, motorized trunk, and 360 cameras. I immediately loved the car, given that it was about 30% cheaper than the Sealion 6, even though they shared the same engine. However, the dealership wasn't able to deliver the premium variant, so I settled for the base variant, as I realized lower moving parts meant lower maintenance over time. Everyday I drive this car, I can't believe what a steal it is. Here's why; 1. Plush Interiors - BYD has used soft materials everywhere, even places that manufacturers like Toyota and Mazda don't offer. It's synthetic leather, but just feels so good. 2. Technology - The base variant doesn't have ADAS. By tech I primarily mean the screen response, connectivity, and overall driver access to key information when driving the car. This may not sound like a lot, but Japaneses car makers just don't care about interior experience at this price point. 3. Hybrid System - I'm still in the break-in period, so I mainly drive in HEV mode. However, whenever I switch to EV, the ride quality is extremely comfortable. 0 drag, 0 noise, just amazing. I get a mileage between 5 to 6 l/100 city driving. Yet to take it on the highway. 4. Cabin Insulation & Space - It's so comfortable inside, especially at the back with recline seats. Again, comparing to the Yaris Cross, this is like luxury on wheels. There are times the family, we just switch to EV mode, and watch Youtube on the center screen. Because we can. 5. Handling and Control - You can choose the steering style you prefer - comfort or sport. I go with comfort, it's just so easy. Overall, I'm really impressed with the purchase, especially given the price point. It's a high value, no frills purchase.
