But why?

RingingInTheRain 2025-04-01 01:24

Would this not damage the truck?

It’s ok for about two and a half feet. Tesla calls it wade mode.

Yet I have a feeling it's not covered under warranty. Yup, im right.... It is your responsibility to gauge the depth of any body of water before entering. Damage or water ingress to Cybertruck as a result of driving in water is not covered by the warranty. Edit: In not bashing then for this, I get the reasoning. However this idiot who drove into a lake will be the first to complain when it falls.

Itchy_Platypus4085 2025-04-01 01:31

This was exactly my thought.... why? 😆

Family-Faith-Freedom 2025-04-01 01:33

Truck is safe. No neck beard basement dwellers in sight.

...which is typical for vehicles. No company will pay for damage to your vehicle because you drove through water that's too deep.

Intelligent_Ad4448 2025-04-01 01:42

That goes for all cars. They can have different modes like off road/rock but if you mess it up it’s not going to be covered. On another note it is ridiculous when cyber trucks got bricked from car washes and wasn’t covered if you didn’t put it in car wash mode.

KnowledgeSafe3160 2025-04-01 01:52

Huh? Cars have been able to drive in the water way before the cyber truck. For example: https://youtu.be/pf0lc93e2ng?si=U_4-Ek20X9jHKuTz Just add a snorkel to an off road car and you got yourself a car that can swim.

I certainly wouldn't do it in saltwater. I probably wouldn't do it in freshwater either, but absolutely not salt water.

NerdyGuy117 2025-04-01 01:55

You never been on a jet ski

[deleted] 2025-04-01 01:55

Is that salt water?

NerdyGuy117 2025-04-01 01:56

Bro, if you try to drive it under water they won’t cover the damages. Typical…. Oh wait it is typical of all car manufacturers.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-01 02:04

No car company will cover your car when your windshield wipers broke because you kept them on automatic mode while going through a car wash. That's all car wash mode does on Tesla's cars. It just disables things like the windshield wipers, charge port door opening, etc. It's simply a convenience feature so you don't have to disable these things individually like you do on other cars. It doesn't prevent it from "getting bricked". Stop blindly believing headlines and comments you read on a politically extreme website.

danisaccountant 2025-04-01 02:05

No

FunkyTangg 2025-04-01 02:05

BurgerMeter 2025-04-01 02:11

I’m more impressed with how it ate the transition from dirt to pavement at the end. It’s rather composed.

BranTheUnboiled 2025-04-01 02:12

If you have an old-school antenna that needs to be rolled down before a car wash and a brush yanks it off because you forgot to, would the manufacturer cover it? Of course not, that's user error and you were warned in your manual. Why would Tesla cover it if you forgot to turn off your auto wipers or lock your charge port? That's all car wash mode is doing to protect the car. No memetruck was ever bricked in a car wash to date that I'm aware of, just click bait headlines.

_MUY 2025-04-01 02:13

Damn it. Now I need one again.

SurelyFurious 2025-04-01 02:13

Deserved. Lakes are for boats not “trucks”

Bithiri_Sathi 2025-04-01 02:13

Same reason as people go off roading for.

Intelligent_Ad4448 2025-04-01 02:13

I can understand not covering auto windshield wipers. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the article but I recall the wirings shorting from water pooling which was caused by poor placement of the wiring. Supposedly fixed now but that’s still ridiculous to not cover it due to poor design. Relax man, I know you’re on Reddit but we can have a casual convo without assumptions here.

NerdyGuy117 2025-04-01 02:14

They may not be anymore lol

_schmuck 2025-04-01 02:14

If you’re in the water afraid of getting wet, get out of the water.

These_Foolish_Things 2025-04-01 02:17

Musk said that the Cybertruck could serve briefly as a boat.

greyscales 2025-04-01 02:18

Elon said: "Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy." Pretty sure that was just another over-promise, under-deliver though.

cadium 2025-04-01 02:18

Sure. I wouldn't, mostly because I'm sure Tesla or my insurance company would try to not cover it.

filletsheO 2025-04-01 02:19

I mean that’s pretty impressive

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-01 02:20

Ok now you're talking about something else that has nothing to do with car wash mode. Yes, the wiper motor on Cybertruck had a recall. Every vehicle has thousands of systems, and inevitably at least a few of them will have a design flaw, sometimes requiring a recall. So I'm not sure what your point is here. This is a normal thing in the car industry. Here's a similar recall from Toyota, if you somehow actually believe this unique to Tesla: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2015/RCMN-15V577-3850.pdf I'd like to have a reasonable conversation, so yeah, let's stick to the facts here.

Phil9151 2025-04-01 02:49

I'll say it for em! Touché

skippyjifluvr 2025-04-01 02:50

I don’t know the law where this took place but in my state it’s illegal to go above a wakeless speed within 150’ of another watercraft (and I’m sure the CT would qualify.)

[deleted] 2025-04-01 02:55

Are you joking? "Boating mode" will never be its primary use so it's inherently less reliable than other marine craft. Additionally, Tesla is obviously not equipped to implement such a design as they have no experience in this area. With the major design and manufacturing flaws of the CT, I simply would not trust them. You might be able to make it waterproof but never saltwater proof. Because the vehicle would need to deploy some kind of actuator in the water, this introduces another piece of equipment that will increase the weight of the car and could fail in deployment. Given the weight and body shape, it wouldn't be hydrodynamic and you run the risk of collision with more appropriate marine craft. It would also increase the cost of maintenance. There's also the insurance/liability issue as others have pointed out.

[deleted] 2025-04-01 02:56

That's the stuff of nightmares ngl

[deleted] 2025-04-01 02:57

I'm calling bullshit. Saltwater exposure to this vehicle? It's not made to handle that.

[deleted] 2025-04-01 02:57

Can they?

Blankcarbon 2025-04-01 02:57

Thin-Mixture-1827 2025-04-01 03:05

sixcylindersofdoom 2025-04-01 03:07

Its Tesla quality, there’s water getting in there lmao

Taylooor 2025-04-01 03:11

Used to be a time when people got stereotyped because of their appearance. Now they get stereotyped because of the appearance of their vehicle. Way to go, buddy, setting the bar lower for humanity.

azsheepdog 2025-04-01 03:12

The_Xenocide 2025-04-01 03:24

Was it floating or were the wheels touching the bottom? For anyone wondering why they joke about boat mode look at a map. starbase is very close to south padre island but it’s a 1 hour drive or 100m across the channel which is saltwater so there’s obvious corrosion to deal with but the spaceX engineers must think about that every time they Have to drive to south padre.

jschall2 2025-04-01 03:25

Haters: it can't handle water 🤣 it gets bricked by a car wash Also haters when it fords 4ft deep water: that's idiotic! 🤡

7f0b 2025-04-01 03:39

Yeah. People in this thread are like "it's not saltwater so it's fine". But it's still water, not really clean either, and will probably sit in various places for a long time before it evaporates. Going to have some smells later possibly. It also doesn't take saltwater to rust things; plain old lake water will do it too.

RexedLaminae 2025-04-01 03:40

I own one. Maybe risky was the better word.

icy1007 2025-04-01 03:40

This is cringe.

Injector22 2025-04-01 03:42

Lol no it isn't. Go look at some of the battery break down videos. You'll see these orange caps at the edge of the battery on the inside. They're drains to let out any water that could get in or if there's a coolant leak. Those same drains let in water. How do I know? I took apart a battery to use the modules in my solar ESS.

Simple_Post3187 2025-04-01 03:44

So right as the Cyrbertruck does something minorly/pretty impressive, Reddit downvotes.

[deleted] 2025-04-01 03:45

The asshole move is driving I giant battery into a body of water when you don't know if it'll actually come out...

jabba_the_wut 2025-04-01 03:46

You're not supposed to get it wet, or feed it after midnight.

wstsidhome 2025-04-01 04:19

I like how the camera person is more interested in the personal watercraft (by that I mean the actual watercraft, not the CT lol)

James-the-Bond-one 2025-04-01 04:21

Not without risking voiding his warranty.

Dr3amerInTheDark 2025-04-01 04:23

James-the-Bond-one 2025-04-01 04:24

This lake is just a few miles north of DFW airport.

UnmakingTheBan2022 2025-04-01 04:24

Same could be said to people who mod their cars.

[deleted] 2025-04-01 04:24

I could see it being kinda flash flood resistant, but like, intentionally trying to cross floodwater would still be super dangerous (and probably not covered by insurance)

James-the-Bond-one 2025-04-01 04:25

Can, they can. But should they?

James-the-Bond-one 2025-04-01 04:26

TheBeatCollector 2025-04-01 05:47

This you? [Tesla Buyers Regret](https://youtube.com/shorts/NpTFUpMsrMU) Nah I'm just playin'! It's me too. Had to spend a few years hearing conservative rednecks talk shit about them. Now liberal neckbeards wanna vandalize them. I just thought(and still do! mostly...) it was a great car. Now it lost like 2/3 it's value making it the first time I'm actually upside down on a vehicle. Which doesn't really matter because we'd already planned to keep it as long as possible, but it is an annoying thought. I'm also left leaning in Houston Suburbia, and all of Reddit is basically Haight and Ashbury compared to outside in real life.

CAMMARMANN 2025-04-01 05:49

This is actually one of the first impressive videos I’ve seen of the cybertruck as much as everyone absolutely hates this thing.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-04-01 05:52

Blaze9 2025-04-01 10:03

https://injen.com/ft-2436-magnuson-moss-warranty-act.html Your warranty can't be voided for modifying a part unless that modification is related to the part that went wrong. Modified injector size and engine blew up? Sucks Added a new audio system and engine blew up? Covered. And it's up to the insurer to prove that the modification was the thing that caused the problem to begin with.

Billy_Goat_ 2025-04-01 10:19

Any engineer who thinks it would be a good idea to do that in a cybertruck is obviously a shit one.

GatheringCircle 2025-04-01 10:48

Just never do this in salty water or the battery will guaranteed catch fire.

Upbeat-Ad-851 2025-04-01 10:51

I have seen 100’s of trucks lost to the see, so no different here.

Orbitect 2025-04-01 11:05

They have a few hovercraft that drive them back and forth... I'm pretty sure a cybertruck doing it isn't on the thought process.

Watada 2025-04-01 13:10

Cybertruck requires special mode just to survive carwash. So he can but only once.

_schmuck 2025-04-01 13:22

Yes. If you go off roading there is dirt and mud and you should expect to get muddy. It’s like going to the beach and being upset that there’s sand in everything.

BadManParade 2025-04-01 13:28

Nothing was gained but what was lost 🤤

ceo_of_banana 2025-04-01 13:31

Electric cars have much less moving parts so I guess it's easier to have motor etc water resistant. Still dumb but you know this is what happens if you combine disposable income with a midlife crisis.

Hohh20 2025-04-01 13:47

All teslas have a car wash mode. It essentially does everything you would need to do in a normal car, just all with 1 button press. Shift neutral, fold in mirrors, lock charging port, etc.

Yaggfu 2025-04-01 13:47

Not remotely true. I’ve taken mine through a car wash dozens of times over the last year. Completely false statement.

Watada 2025-04-01 15:31

I guess car wash mode is for sheep.

Watada 2025-04-01 15:32

Yeah. But we are talking about driving a cybertruck through a lake. That's not a mode.

UltraBallHog 2025-04-01 15:39

That’s badass

AssumedPseudonym 2025-04-01 15:42

Car wash mode is on every Tesla. It disables the charge port opening on touch, the auto windshield wipers, sentry mode, and a few other things. I just keep my vehicles in drive and turn off the wipers. The car wash mode also has free roll for car washes that drag your car through. There is no ‘special mode that the Cybertruck must use’. That is false. Period.

BKachur 2025-04-01 15:45

>it's up to the insurer to prove that the modification was the thing that caused the problem to begin with. The problem with that logic is that because cars are so technically complicated and interconnected, it gives the insurers more latitude to blame stuff on modifications even though they may have nothing to do with the warranty issue. Remember, insurance (and warranties) are in the business of not paying out, so always wise to be extra cautious.

Sealed. Batteries are individually sealed and battery packs are sealed again. Been thoroughly discussed that EVs are designed not to discharge into bodies of water. Even if water enters the battery pack, electricity always move in the direction of the highest conductive element and would be to the anode of the battery. The main issue would be thermal runaway if water got into the battery packs and cells.

Austinswill 2025-04-01 20:11

The power has to get out of those battery assemblies somehow... There are connections that come out of them and components galore that they connect to. There may be dozens of connections OUTSIDE of the battery pack that if not perfectly sealed and isolated from the water could leak current into the water, especially high voltage. >Even if water enters the battery pack, **electricity always move in the direction of the highest conductive element** and would be to the anode of the battery. This is just not true, You learned wrong and have never corrected yourself. Electricity flows through all available paths. Here is a short read but there are many more places you can go to see that this is true. https://www.mikeholt.com/technical-grounding-Path-of-Least-Resistance-(2-8-2K).php >No, electricity does not "take the path of least resistance." It takes all paths available-in inverse proportion to the impedance of the paths. Current flows through all available paths. The magnitude of the current flowing in each path depends on the voltage and impedance of each path.

BobertRosserton 2025-04-01 20:14

Actually I’m very emotionally broken up about this, i might just snap tbh. Yes im fine brother, i just think this truck is a hunk of cow poo.

I think the fact that so many people hate on these things is one of the main reasons I REALLY want one.

TimeTravellingCircus 2025-04-01 20:24

You need to learn that electricity moves towards the path of least resistance. That's how birds and squirrels climb on high voltage power lines and don't get zapped. The electricity avoids their less conductive bodies.

[deleted] 2025-04-01 20:49

Terry died of dysentery?

redarrow992 2025-04-01 20:51

Austinswill 2025-04-01 20:54

You need to learn to click links... Electricity does NOT follow the path of least resistance. I literally gave a link on such. Squirrels do not get shocked on power lines because they are only touching 1 conductor... You do not know what you are talking about.

Deathspiral222 2025-04-01 20:57

The doors and windows are electrically operated. There is no way to get out of a cybertruck if the water causes a short (no actual door handles) Seems super dangerous.

TimeTravellingCircus 2025-04-01 21:47

Sure let me click all the links everyone sends me.

TimeTravellingCircus 2025-04-01 22:00

Okay, I'm willing to learn. That wire has a current of electrons. Why doesn't it flow in all directions and through one of the squirrels feet and out the other foot, when both feet are on the same wire? By the simple statement that electrons take all paths, wouldn't that also be a new path to continue in the flow of electrons down the wire? I understand that a circuit with a ground or another conductor isnt created but in the statement that electrons take all paths the current in the single conductor must surely want to take all paths.

CLxJames 2025-04-02 01:02

Oh my bad, ty

Austinswill 2025-04-02 02:00

If there is no circuit, no power is flowing, it cannot take any path if it is not flowing. Think of Voltage as "pressure" that wants to flow from a + to a - in a DC circuit. In Terms of AC you have Hot and Common. The voltage is "pressure" to flow between the hot to the common. When the squirrel is on the line, it is only touching the HOT side of the circuit. The squirrel does in fact become charged and now has that voltage potential 'Pressure' in it and if it were to touch something that is grounded (same as common) it would indeed get zapped. YOu can see how line servicemen on HV power lines being repaired with helicopters have to equalize their electric potential before touching the line. Watch [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_NEAEGeFIw) video and you will see them hold a wand to the wire to equalize the potential without getting hurt. These lines are much higher voltage than what you are seeing birds and squirrels on, but the same thing is happening at a much smaller scale with them nonetheless. Your mistake (no offense) is imagining that power is flowing along the line like water... and while that is a good analogy for understanding circuits, it is not a perfect analogy and believing it is a perfect one would in fact lead one to believe that "power takes the path of least resistance". When there is conduction between power and ground, power flows relative to the resistance, along all paths to ground. Imagine a battery hooked up to a big ol coil of wire that has very little resistance and will pass loads of current easily and get very hot... If I hook that up to a battery... along side a little LED light with a resistor.... That LED will still light up... because it too has a path for current to flow... If the "path of least resistance" was true, then the LED would not light up since the current would all flow through the coil.

Cyb3rTruk 2025-04-02 02:16

Correct

[deleted] 2025-04-02 02:27

Except by your original logic, you should be on the beach in a truck.

TimeTravellingCircus 2025-04-02 03:51

I am imagining those power lines are in your example like a long coil that is straightened out and supplying all the homes along its route via service lines. Each service line to each home being like your LED light along the coil path and having current run through it. Then I would, as I did previously, conclude that squirrel is standing on top of a single strand of a completed circuit. I'm certain you're not spouting false information and my electrical knowledge is high school physics level, and clearly not even that good anymore. So I'm certain I'm still missing a vital piece of information to piece this together once more.

[Here](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fq0krsirsv4581.png) is a drawing of how it works.... Don't get wrapped around the 3 phase stuff. Just know that for power to flow, there has to be a pathway from a HOT to a Common/ground(they are essentially the same, which you can see on the drawing on the right with the orange trace) While current is running through the wires, it is doing so to pass through closed circuits "downstream". The squirrel on the wire is not part of any closed circuit. The power has no reason to leave the wire and go through the squirrel just to go back into the same wire. The squirrel will need to touch something and create a path for the power to flow FROM the HOT line it is touching TO a common/ground before any power will flow through the squirrel. Now, when there are higher voltages, the air itself can begin to conduct power (imagine lightning and Tesla coils!) But that is a topic for after we get the lightbulb to come on with the basics.

Everyone who posts this has never fought with a major car manufacturer over a warranty claim. Good luck quoting that after you add a supercharger kit to your truck or even just flash a new tune.

Blaze9 2025-04-02 22:58

Can you process what you read properly? Where does it say anywhere that anything to do with you adding a supercharger/tune mean you'll still be covered if the engine blows up? Unrelated system modifications will be covered. I literally just went through this with my hyundai. 85k miles, turbo blew up. Covered under warranty but they were saying I had aftermarket LEDs and sound system. less than an hour with corporate and that was resolved. (BTW never buy Hyundai.. cars are okay but their dealerships are the absolute worst)

Skoomafreak 2025-04-02 23:16

Sounds like a weird one-off situation with a shady dealership if true. Probably taking advantage of people who know very little. Almost every time anyone mentions Magnuson-Moss it’s in reference to engine modifications, not led lights or a sound system.

WhosUrBuddiee 2025-04-03 14:51

Sadly the problem with your logic is that you assume manufactures will honor the law without being forced to. While you are correct that it isnt legal for them to void a warranty for unrelated changes, there are no consequences if they do. Manufactures very commonly will void your warranty claims for unrelated modifications. Say you add a cold air intake and exhaust on your car and you have a brake caliper seize up. They absoultly can and often will deny your warranty claim. They are a multi billion dollar company, you are a single person, what are you going to do about it? Do you really have the time and money to let your car sit unable to drive for months/years while you hire a lawyer and take them to court to try to force them to fix it under warranty? Or do you simply cough up the $300 to get them to fix it so you can get your car on the road again? Well 99% of the time, people go with the second option. Dealers know this. You are mistaken that dealers have to prove anything to deny your claim. The only "proof" they needs is a service writer saying a modification lead to the failure, thats it. No proof or logic is required, until you get a court involved.

Typically insurance covers making stupid decisions. Don't get me wrong, if the *intent* was to blatantly destroy the vehicle (arson), they would definitely deny coverage, but in this case he could say he misjudged the depth of the water. If the carrier covered something like this, it's almost certain the insured will be getting a letter soon afterwards telling them they're not eligible for renewal.

[deleted] 2025-04-04 03:20

I had coverage (initially) denied for misjudging the depth of the water once. Their rationale was that they wouldn't cover crashing into a tree while off-roading either. It was eventually covered later, though.
