Scary episode.

Seal-EV | 2025-11-25 15:45 | 36 views

Today I had a very scary episode while driving in town. Speeds were low. A car driving towards me overtook another car and came into my lane about 50 meters away. My car braked suddenly almost causing an accident behind me. I lost all possibilities to take evasive action. As soon as my car stopped my accelerator was dead and I had to restart the car again. This happened in town but what would have happened on roads with higher speed limits? Seconds count in situations like this and I could do nothing.

Bad 12v battery? I’ve had the same and that was the solution

Seal-EV 2025-11-25 17:22

I have a lithium battery with a condenser. It will never go flat.

windsweptwonder 2025-11-25 17:34

Collision avoidance software kicked in. I've never experienced a total stop, more of a tug on the wheel and a jab of the brakes as the software alerts me to a potential hazard.

[deleted] 2025-11-25 18:13

Mine was defect, not flat. Maybe it has nothing to do with it in your case, but for me it was the problem

Seal-EV 2025-11-25 18:32

Did you have the same battery as mine or is it a lead battery?

[deleted] 2025-11-25 19:28

The standard, I guess not a lithium one

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-26 01:23

Yep, this happened to me as well. Completely unnecessary autonomous emergency braking in regular traffic. Scary. BYD need to get on top of it.

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-26 01:23

Seriously doubt this

Wonka0998 2025-11-26 02:45

I "think" I've been able to manually override the AEB by completely releasing and then flooring the accelerator. It has never just stopped responding and require a restart for the car to come back. I'd say you should have it checked by the dealership, but they probably won't do anything or just tell you everything's alright with the car. So a specialized EV repair shop might be the best alternative (I don't know how developed and trustworthy those services are in your country).

2021Noob 2025-11-26 03:11

Everything is logged, I'd be asking the service centre to provide detail about exactly what happened and why the car would not respond to the accelerator.

_TheMonster_ 2025-11-26 03:12

+1 to this. You would have to quickly switch between brake and accelerator pedal for the AEB to disengage and for you to continue driving/moving along in traffic. It takes time and the presence of mind, to do the above maneuver, similar to race car drivers 😅

Mysterious_Equal_951 2025-11-26 03:12

But why did the accelerator die? OP had to restart

Wonka0998 2025-11-26 04:06

Yes, I agree. I'm no racing driver, but I know a "regular" driver might not have the same reaction in that kind of situations.

_TheMonster_ 2025-11-26 06:15

It definitely catches one by surprise. 2-3 times even the car got confused about whom to save, a stray dog, a human or a person on a motorcycle. (I live in India, that would explain the chaos I have said in one sentence 😂) That's when I found a gap after all the obstacles moved to the left, and then just floored it to escape all 3, otherwise the heavy vehicle trailing me from behind would have rear ended me.

That’s okay

My BYD Atto 3 12V battery was replaced within the first six months under warranty, and it had zero impact on the autonomous systems when it started to drop because once the 400V battery is engaged, it isn't particularly relevant. The issue with the 12 volt battery is it doesn't allow you to start the car at all because it won't kick in the module that turns on the 400 volt. Facts are better than speculation

[deleted] 2025-11-27 06:51

My car started doing weird things because of the bad 12v battery, that isn’t speculation. It isn’t there just to start the car you know… One of the situations I had was the same as OP’s situation, but it wasn’t really normal breaking, the car switched off while driving but it’s hard to tell the difference. If OP want facts about his car he should go to the garage, if he wants to hear a possible explanation or experiences I can respond on Reddit.

juiceawonder 2025-11-27 08:22

Can we disable it? It happened to me a couple of days ago.

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-27 08:32

Fair enough. A lot of the modules are 12 volt, and no doubt low voltage would do some weird shit. I didn't experience it, and I haven't heard of it from the BYD Australia group, but you're entirely possibly right.

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-27 08:32

You can, but it restarts every time. It's AEB .

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-27 08:33

That's exactly how I avoided being rear-ended. I had to smash the throttle to avoid it when it just decided to stop in the middle of traffic.

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-27 08:33

They didn't even know what they were doing when I went to the dealership to report the AEB events.

[deleted] 2025-11-27 09:19

I was expecting a Reddit fight, but that’s really a reasonable response 🙂👍🏻

2021Noob 2025-11-27 23:29

Are you OP's 2nd account? That sucks, my dealer has been really good; there's definitely some bad stories on here about terrible dealers though.

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-28 01:30

No, I'm not OP. I've just had a BYD for three years and it's not uncommon at all.

2021Noob 2025-11-28 02:21

Is yours a Seal too? Same dead accelerator experience?

Suntzu_AU 2025-11-28 02:50

No, BYD, Atto, 3 for the past three years. I've had some pretty random emergency braking events which I do not like. Otherwise, I love the car.

2021Noob 2025-11-28 03:53

Yeah, my Seal did initially, but it's been fine since an update; hopefully they fix yours too 🤞 First I've heard of a dead accelerator like OP though.

tld8102 2025-11-30 05:57

Yeah. it is scary, at most for me it's a tap at the brakes, feel like my astro self leaving my body
