Pretty impressive how it caught itself from falling. Very human like.

FormalElements 2024-12-10 02:59

It took boston dynamics almost 20 years to get to this level. Tesla has done it in less than 2. Remarkable pace.

LurkerWithAnAccount 2024-12-10 03:11

Worth noting that they’ve confirmed no vision is being used in these particular tests. Optimus is walking “blindfolded” using only its position/balance sensors.

LakeSun 2024-12-10 03:21

Hmmm. How much is a good shotgun? Recommended brand?

transwarpconduit1 2024-12-10 03:23

What is the point? Why are we doing this to ourselves? Isn’t it clear by now this will not help us? There’s a point of diminishing returns to automation. We’re going to be our own demise.

JerryLeeDog 2024-12-10 03:34

Unreal…

Kayyam 2024-12-10 03:36

We are far away from diminishing returns. What are you afraid of?

Few_Guard_1938 2024-12-10 03:40

He walks like Biden right now. Impressive for a robot. It’ll get better.

bafadam 2024-12-10 03:46

I don’t really understand the obsession with making these robots bipedal. Like, it just seems like a shitload of balance work to figure out for… no benefit.

Salt_Job4615 2024-12-10 03:47

I guess no one has watched “Terminator “. You guys keep this shit up , skynet is coming online

[deleted] 2024-12-10 03:51

Looks like the hardware isn't going to be any kind of issue

skinnyeffinstone 2024-12-10 03:56

Optimus coming home from the bar?

Toastybunzz 2024-12-10 04:01

The same reason humans are bipedal, its better.

Rawalmond73 2024-12-10 04:02

Impressive considering it’s still a fairly new bot.

euxene 2024-12-10 04:08

have you heard of stairs or factories with more than a ground floor?

Cleanngreenn 2024-12-10 04:10

Idk about you but I know many senior citizens that would appreciate help around the house, even company, help with meds etc. it would revolutionize senior health care. I would want mine to cook clean maybe wash my Tesla

SucreTease 2024-12-10 04:16

Because the robot is made to do what humans can do. Which means that it must be able to walk and go where humans do, including stairs, uneven ground, etc. You must either redesign the world to accommodate the robot, or design the robot to accommodate the world that was designed for humans.

outkast8459 2024-12-10 04:20

It's a lot easier to read a book than it is to write it.

Oo0o8o0oO 2024-12-10 04:20

Four legs good, two legs bad.

FormalElements 2024-12-10 04:22

If you're implying that Tesla just took what BD and copied it, that is not the case.

outkast8459 2024-12-10 04:28

I'm not saying they just copied it. But they didn't make this in a vacuum, they benefitted from BD's research.

FormalElements 2024-12-10 04:29

In what ways?

Fletchetti 2024-12-10 04:39

Obviously this looks like Bigdog /s

outkast8459 2024-12-10 04:42

The same way it always works in tech. They hire ex-employees, they read research papers. This isn't really novel

It’d be cool if it had an occasional third leg to use for particularly tricky balancing situations. Like a tail that could extend to the ground as an anchor if it’s going to be in one place for a while

Seriously, this is me.

Equivalent_Owl_5644 2024-12-10 05:52

It is funny how we assume that robots should be built like humans as if we are the most superior and well-designed species. I’m sure we will find more superior beings to build as we use AI to engineer more. I’m thinking that an octopus-like robot with several arms that can move in any direction would far exceed the capabilities of a human.

TenshiS 2024-12-10 06:00

1) that shit would be terrifying and nobody would buy your product. 2) they already do the 4-legged dog-like robots 3) these are supposed to be used for tasks and in Environments made for humans, so it just makes sense from a practical point of view as well.

I_am_darkness 2024-12-10 06:14

I just realized that human form is made for things that we don't nneed robots for and robots would probably have a better form matchign animals for things we need animals for.

[deleted] 2024-12-10 06:15

What tag do you need to hunt these?

scriptedpixels 2024-12-10 06:19

It’s escaped the BMW factory after realising what it was being forced to make 😂😂

GuntherOfGunth 2024-12-10 06:37

Boston Dynamics and other firms started basically from scratch when they started, it was a new technology that they were attempting to harness. They paved the road for this technology. Tesla has hired people who worked in the industry and already had the building blocks needed to start further down the road.

childroid 2024-12-10 06:49

Oh my god how did I know

Pikauterangi 2024-12-10 06:50

Looks like an old blind person walking down a hill for the first time. Anything with half a brain would analyse the surface and dig its heals in or pick up some speed and not try and back pedal. Seems like they are decades behind the competition.

OGPresidentDixon 2024-12-10 06:51

The competition being me.

Pikauterangi 2024-12-10 06:52

Lols, see my other comment. I thought it looked like a blind person.

Flux_Inverter 2024-12-10 07:06

Keep in mind they operate on FSD. Once they are ready, if you have an ICE vehicle, an Optimus bot can drive and ICE vehicle as well as FSD operates a Tesla. As someone mentioned, these are created to do human things in a human environment to replace humans. Other configurations will come, but this one, the hardest one, is first.

c_c_c__combobreaker 2024-12-10 07:11

We're about 20 years before robots walking around won't turn heads.

evsincorporated 2024-12-10 07:11

It’s not using vision here…

rideincircles 2024-12-10 07:25

Just wait until Tesla starts mining asteroids and they need a robot that can hold itself in place, so they make the Tesla sentinel bot.

rideincircles 2024-12-10 07:26

We are still a decade or more away from the Tesla sentinel bot.

Few_Raisin_8981 2024-12-10 07:28

Few_Raisin_8981 2024-12-10 07:32

LimberAtg7krp 2024-12-10 07:37

If this was the zombie walking gate style in the walking dead, it would be a comedy.

My_Soul_to_Squeeze 2024-12-10 07:38

I don't think it's totally fair to compare timelines. Tesla has the advantage of beginning this project with modern computers and software. BD is a research lab, not a manufacturing powerhouse. Very different starting points, goals, and skill sets, plus second mover advantage for the things that are similar.

Pikauterangi 2024-12-10 07:38

No shit Sherlock, it looks like it’s blind as a bat, without the sonar.

WaiLinTun78 2024-12-10 07:39

Kaptainkid1 2024-12-10 07:43

Optimus and a 6 pack later.

Cheers59 2024-12-10 07:54

My goodness me what an original reference.

ackermann 2024-12-10 07:56

Yeah, but I’m sure Tesla hired some former Boston Dynamics engineers…

ackermann 2024-12-10 07:58

When can I buy this version?

Alienfreak 2024-12-10 08:07

Robotics has advanced like crazy. Even through open academic releases. Try building an electric vehicle in the middle ages and nowadays. Are you implying everyone is just stealing tech nowadays when they are building a vehicle? No. The general state of the art has advanced and everyone is basing their stuff on it. Actuators. Sensors. Processing hardware. Programming.....

Alienfreak 2024-12-10 08:08

Have you ever been to an assembly line? I guess not. Unless its inside an old building its usually completely flat. Everybody hates non flat assemblies. Takes away your flexibility.

Alienfreak 2024-12-10 08:10

That is very much wrong. For a robot four legs will be better in most cases. Some rare cases two legs might be better, for example if it has to work inside of the vehicle. For legs are much more stable and can carry more bulky and heavier stuff much easier.

phanibal 2024-12-10 08:26

That’s how I walk when drunk

ivan_denysov 2024-12-10 08:35

For sure. I bet you can avoid a lot of pitfalls even by analyzing the publicly available videos from Boston Dynamics. And in general it is easier to achieve a goal if you know that someone already did it. It gives you confidence and you stop doubting if it is even possible. Another example is Rocket Lab. It took less time to developed and launch a rocket into orbit than it took US/USSR the first time. Rocket Labs didn’t have access to workforce with deep experience in airspace or some secret information. But they still learned a lot about rockets from public sources and from visiting US space museums.

n0_1_here 2024-12-10 09:09

transwarpconduit1 2024-12-10 09:27

By diminishing returns I mean there’s a point where automation can’t help the masses because instead of eliminates the need for them. At that point of people can’t afford to buy things, what is the point of automation? We are rapidly approaching that.

transwarpconduit1 2024-12-10 09:28

So yet another thing that helps boomers but screws the upcoming generations?

starkiller_bass 2024-12-10 10:23

starkiller_bass 2024-12-10 10:24

starkiller_bass 2024-12-10 10:26

Yes. FULLY functional, Lieutenant Yar.

twinbee 2024-12-10 10:51

What are the odds Tesla completely outclass BD within a few years. Look at SpaceX, light years ahead of the competition.

BadRegEx 2024-12-10 11:02

Odd are very high Edit: BD is no where near the AI powerhouse that Tesla is. FSD is, by a long shot, the most advanced 3D spacial navigation system ever made.

RELLboba 2024-12-10 11:21

I just need this thing to do my laundry, hills won’t be involved.

WockySlushie 2024-12-10 12:20

Astronomically low, IMO. I like Tesla products, but they are infamously a “fake it till ya make it” style company. Lots of shiny demos, like this one. The latest products from BD are truly remarkable and seem really polished already. They’ve already progressed from proving the control systems through demos of acrobatics & path planning to actual useful application demos.

icyhotonmynuts 2024-12-10 12:21

Most of my nightmares start out like this too

WockySlushie 2024-12-10 12:26

Then it especially seems like a waste. Boston dynamics does it because they’re a research lab. Tesla does it because… it’s not particularly useful? The first application of robots like this is going to be in factories, so why not cater to the currently only use case that’s remotely profitable?

DIY_Colorado_Guy 2024-12-10 12:41

The mental gymnastics redditers will go throigh to try and rob Tesla of any achievement is insane.

Palestine4Eva 2024-12-10 12:46

Tinags 2024-12-10 12:46

When the robots attack, running for the hills may not be an option.

jcrckstdy 2024-12-10 13:03

how fsd drives mostly good sometimes wtf

lamgineer 2024-12-10 13:18

The point is with declining birth rate below replacement, there are less and less young people to work and support a rapidly aging population (average age going up). Robot is not just a nice to have but a necessity for society to continue to function in the long run.

JRskatr 2024-12-10 13:36

Kuriente 2024-12-10 14:05

Decades? Show me a humanoid robot from 20+ years ago walk untethered in open uneven terrain. Let's then consider how much humanoid robots might cost, and if smaller companies like Boston Dynamics can realistically catch up and compete with a manufacturing giant like Tesla. Also worth discussing teleoperation. People see that as Tesla *cheating*. I see it as them developing one of the most important features that everyone else is neglecting. Does anyone else have as much experience in that space?

Chip_Baskets 2024-12-10 14:09

Atlas did this in the snow 8 years ago untethered.

Kuriente 2024-12-10 15:59

That's less than a decade, let alone "decades".

blackinthmiddle 2024-12-10 16:05

Right, but that's not decades (as in at least 20 years) behind. What I find most fascinating with the race to improve robots like this is the power source. I'd love to see the day that they run on nuclear batteries, but I can understand why that's not likely to happen.

Cleanngreenn 2024-12-10 16:18

I see your point. I am not sure how it would impact housing — would it enable older folks to live longer in their homes that are too big for them now or would it bring down the cost of senior retirement homes enabling families to put old folks in there more affordably and create more housing supply

euxene 2024-12-10 16:19

a robot that can be trained to do anything a human can. how is this not useful? It is literally free labor once Tesla has everything working lol

[deleted] 2024-12-10 17:13

Applying it to a human made world.

[deleted] 2024-12-10 17:14

One application. This is made for homes.

bafadam 2024-12-10 17:17

Okay, but in 95+% of scenarios, four legs will go anywhere two legs will go and you don’t have nearly as many balance problems. Or carrying capacity balance problems. Or error correction problems.

bafadam 2024-12-10 17:19

Have you thought about how four legs will go up stairs just as easily as two legs? And for factory scenarios where you’ll be limited by a top heavy carrying capacity, how being able to centralize holding transport items in the center mass instead of having to juggle it around because of your awkward leg positioning would be an advantage? No, we made it look like a human because we thought it would look cool, no solve a problem.

ASmollzZ 2024-12-10 17:24

We are obsolete. What would Oppi or Einstein think?

Alienfreak 2024-12-10 17:27

Doing factory work in a controlled enviroment with clear steps of work content to be performed is about 1000000% easier to do than "everything in every home". Elon is just promising stuff again that he will not deliver in 10 years.

SodaPopin5ki 2024-12-10 18:29

They'll also fit in space suits made for humans, which can make them useful for the Mars colony. It's pretty hard making a robot vacuum rated, handle temperature extremes and handle all that dust and such.

LordFUHard 2024-12-10 18:33

And soon it'll be carrying an uzi and roaming the neighborhood so get ready to lock in step or else.

IntelligentPitch410 2024-12-10 18:48

What would be the purpose of a robot "walking around" ?

4_da_Lolz 2024-12-10 18:54

Me at 3 AM, walking home from the club.

bafadam 2024-12-10 18:57

Ehhhhhh, but space suits are … awfully specific to human physiology. The challenges of space machines, sure, but it’s hard enough to get in and out of them, this feels like more work than just designing a shitty bubble to work in.

Jkftl1 2024-12-10 18:58

'Ambulation' is one thing. 'Doing work' is another phase.

RunJumpJump 2024-12-10 19:02

Whatever activity we do not wish to perform, but it can.

korneliuslongshanks 2024-12-10 19:07

The difference between this and Boston Robotics is the speed in which it's advancing for Tesla. Sure, Boston Robotics is owned by Hyundai but Google kept all the patents and good stuff before selling them. And I'm sorry, but Elon is going to have a bigger sway in diverting manufacturing to Optimus vs Hyundai to Boston Robotics.

RunJumpJump 2024-12-10 19:10

A two-legged robot has 50% fewer leg parts, of course. That and, well... humans have a pretty good track record of doing work that only requires two legs. If a specific task requires more than two legs, then yeah build a bigger, leggier robot for it.

IntelligentPitch410 2024-12-10 19:12

What a depressing future

bafadam 2024-12-10 19:13

It does have 50% less leg parts, but you’re presumably going to have them all be interchangeable anyway, so you’ve got economy of scale there to work with. I mean, humans have a good track record of doing work with two legs because… what’s the option? We have a terrible track record of doing work with 2+ legs. Carrying things? Tracks or wheels work better than picking your feet up off the ground. Holding heavy things steady? Three legs work better in a tripod configuration. You waste a lot of abdominal muscles on balance. Traversing treacherous terrain? There’s a reason people use those hiking sticks. More legs.

3lectricFan 2024-12-10 19:14

That thing walks like FSD drives.

dtpearson 2024-12-10 19:17

> till ya make it And this is the most important part of your quote. Elon has a habit of eventually making it rather than saying "I cant make it", but it often takes far longer than he initially suggests it will.

WockySlushie 2024-12-10 19:26

Because the functionality you’re describing is 30 years out, as is the ROI on that type of use. Put wheels on it in a factory setting and they could be put to use in profitable positions within 5 years.

WockySlushie 2024-12-10 19:30

I agree, but I don’t exactly see how that applies here. That applies for applications where they’re attempting to make a huge leap in technology, like landing rockets upright and building the first profitable EV’s. This bipedal robot and their end goal of said robot seems to be entirely accomplished by Boston dynamics already.

c_c_c__combobreaker 2024-12-10 19:35

SodaPopin5ki 2024-12-10 20:15

How will they move the bubble around when working out on the Martian regolith? Spacesuits are specific to the environment conducive to human physiology. Since Optimus is designed to work in 1 atmosphere and around 20-25°C, throwing it in a suit may be the easiest way to adapt it to the Martian surface. One big issue is heat rejection, as the robots are expected to generate more heat than a human. On the other hand, no need for oxygen / CO2 filtration. Note: This isn't my idea. It was being discussed on a science or space podcast. I can't recall which one.

[deleted] 2024-12-10 20:19

Very hypocritical of you considering you could have walked to public square to deliver your comments to random strangers, rather than utilize machines to do it for you.

Time to start reading Isaac Asimov's Robot novels again. We must institute his three laws of robotics to save ourselves from robot tyranny. Won't be long before one of these shows up at my door demanding a recharge.

\>This bipedal robot and their end goal of said robot seems to be entirely accomplished by Boston dynamics already. Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I was not aware that Boston Dynamics had created a bipedal robot capable of handling \[most\] tasks a human can do.

“Man I could really go for a Starbucks…”

electric_boogaloo_72 2024-12-10 21:27

I wouldn’t put it past Elon to buy Mazda’s SkyActive and VW’s CarNet and then literally call it SKYNET.

This was posted by the official Optimus account. It's the only video posted. Everyone else has just been screen shooting it and reposting.

Doggerland-Dad 2024-12-10 23:34

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Atlas costs substantially more. Both to develope and cost to end user.

[deleted] 2024-12-10 23:38

It is currently doing factory work on an assembly line. It is designed to also work inside a home when that time comes. I'm not sure what you point is?

Doggerland-Dad 2024-12-10 23:40

In my opinion, long before robots become a part of our daily lives, they will blaze the trail for us on the Moon and Mars. With the proper AI, robots such as Optimus will be able to travel to and set up basic infrastructure for human habitation on hostile environments in space.

Kuriente 2024-12-10 23:40

The goal is not a bipedal robot. That's been done many times with varying degrees of success. Some of the goals (plural) I believe are something like: -Creating a robot that integrates an AI capable of complex human tasks. -Making it affordable and reliable enough to sell as a product for households. -(this one is my reading between the lines speculation) Developing a seamless teleoperation interface with these robots that enables professionals to ghost into their bodies and conduct complex specialized tasks from afar (think the best surgeons in the world, technicians in a dangerous environment, bomb disposal, etc...). The latter is also massively useful for AI training those robots and could further be used for entertainment (imagine having physical experiences through a haptic suit and VR interface through a physical humanoid robot). Those, I believe, are some of the goals. We're witnessing Tesla's early steps (literally) at creating the foundational building blocks towards those goals.

bafadam 2024-12-11 05:04

Yeah.

TenshiS 2024-12-11 05:38

it's being downvoted because that's just not the reason they build them to look like us. Familiarity, comfort, good fit in existing human processes and spaces etc are much more important criteria than being the "most advanced" in some imaginary context. I'm also pretty sure these companies investing billions in what they see as a new industry have sunk tens of millions in market research and base their decisions on more than mere intuition.

Alienfreak 2024-12-11 07:21

Yes and for a factory a bipedal robot is not the best to take your first steps. The main problem is identifying objects that change and your changing enviroment. Keep it simple.

WhereUGo_ThereUAre 2024-12-11 15:42

You really just don’t get it, the value of a humanoid robot isn’t just to walk or do a backflip, but instead is it’s ability to fully interact in the same world as humans do, BD has practically zero ability to that. Tesla is utilizing the same technology that allows its wheeled robots to navigate the same roads as human drivers to have its legged robots to do that everywhere we do.

Pilotguitar2 2024-12-11 16:05

Looks like its OIWTFYB

[deleted] 2024-12-11 16:21

And it will take the next FSD company 2 years to do what it took Tesla 20 years to do... That's how technology works. It starts off slow, and then becomes easy 20 years later.

FormalElements 2024-12-11 16:29

I think my comment is being viewed as if I'm saying BD was slow and Tesla is fast. I'm aware that technology is more advanced now. It would be similar if I drew a comparison to the Wright Brothers vs any modern air plane company. But nonetheless, the leapfrogging effect here is still impressive and it mostly has to do with their learning approach. I'm excited to see what Gen 3 will look like.

My_Soul_to_Squeeze 2024-12-11 16:31

Agreed. Really *Optimistic* about the future of this project.

CloseToMyActualName 2024-12-11 16:32

It's impressive from a technical standpoint, but is roughly the same as was [BD showed off 4 years ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhND7Mvp3f4). Tesla's real problem is the same as BD's, what's the use case? Walking outside is cool, but not really useful on its own. The actual use case is supposed to be replacing human labour, but everything that has been demonstrated so far is teleoperation (often disguised as AI). One can maybe imagine a simplified application like "get and fetch tools" for workers at a construction site, but even there you're spending as much effort accommodating the robot as you're getting work out of it. That's not to say it isn't a very impressive piece of hardware, and the final objective isn't plausible, but Tesla is being treated as revolutionary when they're still playing catch up.

FormalElements 2024-12-11 16:34

Hah. Oh come on. Not another Skynet outlook. Humanoid robotics will do meaningful tasks and help create abundance of resources, including time as a resource.

[deleted] 2024-12-11 16:40

[deleted] 2024-12-11 17:14

Vision and identifying objects is a software solution. Nothing to do with its legs. Keeping upright is a solved problem. What Tesla is doing is creating a robot that can fit into a human world. Factories don't need to be modified to fit the robot. This can be placed into any factory.

Olefarmer1566 2024-12-11 18:12

DIY_Colorado_Guy 2024-12-11 18:56

Tesla just started building the robot <2 years ago. Going from nothing to a robot that can walk, catch a ball, do very limited tasks in that amount of time is incredible. BD has had 20+ years to get where they are. I think you're missing the point, it's not about what it's currently doing, it's about the rate of improvement and the direction it's heading. Feel free to shit on it because you don't like Elon, the robot will be built with or without your support.

[deleted] 2024-12-11 18:56

Honda made this sort of robot 20 years ago.

CloseToMyActualName 2024-12-11 19:17

>Tesla just started building the robot <2 years ago. You mean [\>3 years ago](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimus_(robot)). >Going from nothing to a robot that can walk, catch a ball, do very limited tasks in that amount of time is incredible. It has very impressive hardware, but outside of the walking I don't think any of those tasks are completed autonomously. >Feel free to shit on it because you don't like Elon, the robot will be built with or without your support. I shit on people who hype things they clearly can't deliver, just like I shit on Elon back in 2016 or whenever it was for thinking self-driving was months/a year away, I shit on him today for convincing folks he's going to take over the robotics industry. There's already [robots working production in Japan](https://youtu.be/x2ep5EI4ivY?si=v-h4YXlJoSY2kLdH&t=614), the only innovative thing about Optimus is trying to give it an extremely human like form, which is fun for a demo, but doesn't make a lot of sense from a robotics perspective.

Main_Bank_7240 2024-12-11 19:46

CloseToMyActualName 2024-12-11 21:49

The stock has been well in excess of its PE ratio for years. The fact I think the stock is overvalued today doesn't mean I think the market is going to correct tomorrow. It just means I won't touch it with a 10-ft pole. Either way, I still don't see a justification for the claim that Optimus is particularly advanced. No one has pushed the human form as far for sure, but I'm not sure anyone has really wanted to.

I think you might be giving them too little credit: Tesla's using a completely different control systems paradigm than Boston Dynamics, and they went with electric motors where BD's decades of research largely focused on hydraulics. Optimus' hands are a lot more impressive than Atlas', too.

Lalooskee 2024-12-21 02:32

One limits the advantages of robotics once it’s just standing upright and limiting it to human physics. “Arms” nor the “legs” do not even extend or have any speed. It’s quite basic knowledge/physics and we are supposed to advance technology to aid us, not embarrass ourselves.

GENDERFLUIDRAHHH 2025-01-02 21:31

That hockey stick guy is not gonna have a good time during the robot uprising.

dahulk1984 2025-01-03 05:26

Reading through these comments, it’s painfully obvious that a lot of you don’t understand Elon’s vision with Optimus. It’s not enough to make a robot who can do lots of things. The robot has to be affordable for most families. This allows for more production, which keeps costs down. His team is working with one hand tied behind its back, intentionally, because Elon has a vision for a future where most households and businesses have at least one Optimus. I think I’ll bet on the man who is catching rockets on a ship in the ocean.

XxjptxX7 2025-04-05 12:16

Boston dynamics was doing this stuff a decade ago, they have robots that can run do parkour and do backflips, they already have robot dogs and factory arms on the market.

OGPresidentDixon 2025-04-05 14:54

Are you a bot?

XxjptxX7 2025-04-05 16:07

No just pointing out this stuff has existed for 10years, it’s not impressive.

OGPresidentDixon 2025-04-06 17:27

4 months ago it was impressive that I walked down a hill at a slightly less awkward level than the robot in the video. Now you're saying I gotta learn how to do backflips and parkour??

XxjptxX7 2025-04-06 20:32

No I’m talking about how the technology compares to competition not to humans. Your original comment literally asked what competition so I answered.

OGPresidentDixon 2025-04-20 22:52

My original comment: >The competition being me.

XxjptxX7 2025-04-21 00:42

Exactly I gave you the competition and you proceeded to compare the robot to yourself instead of the competition.
