freshfunk 2024-10-11 03:33

Is there only going to be a 2 door version?

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:34

[deleted]

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:34

Yes, two door, two seats with plenty of trunk space for luggage The Robovan can do 20 people or Goods across dense cities

lolpopulism 2024-10-11 03:35

The car aside that was one of the worst tech events I've ever seen

RazingsIsNotHomeNow 2024-10-11 03:35

There's got to be a better announcement page than this. They don't even have a real picture of the robotaxi on the site. Just a rendering.

freshfunk 2024-10-11 03:36

Was there more info on the bus (is that the robovan)? Only seeing pics and no details.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:37

They literally had them driving around and giving people rides. what are you talking about.

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:37

That's the Robovan. The only info I have is from the live stream which had it drive autonomously. 20 people walked out of it. Looked like comfy seats. Two widescreen TVs at each end. Edit: More info from the Tesla X Post "Robovan seats 20 & can be adapted to commercial or personal use – school bus, RV, cargo"

shanswami 2024-10-11 03:38

maybe they can bring that design language to a pickup truck of some kind

MDPROBIFE 2024-10-11 03:38

what? Dude, they have them driving around at the event

donhuell 2024-10-11 03:39

so what if I want to go somewhere with 3 or 4 of my friends? I have to call for a 20 person van?

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:40

The vision as I see it is, multiple 2 seater Robotaxis navigating constantly around. So you hop in, hop out. Your friends grab the one just after yours Or if you're a group, like a team lunch or dinner. You grab the 20 seater Robovan

pennywize81 2024-10-11 03:41

Call two cyber cabs?

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:41

A smaller Cybertruck would be nice! Truck Jr.

aaandfuckyou 2024-10-11 03:42

That was so disjointed. Seems he got off script so many times and they just ended up rolling out the robovan to try to get him back on track lmao

ColorMeMac 2024-10-11 03:42

Elon said all Model 3 and Y’s will be available to be autonomous too. So I would assume you use their app and select how many people in your party. Then a Model 3 or Y would pick you and your 3 friends up instead of a CyberCab.

Dont_Think_So 2024-10-11 03:42

They said there would also be robotaxi 3 and Ys. The cybercab is for the majority of traffic that is 1 or 2 people.

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-11 03:43

What more do you want out of a product announcement? It's a prototype that's several years out from production and they have 20 of them driving around. For the Model 3 announcement there were only 3 and one of them was clay lol.

22marks 2024-10-11 03:43

Yeah, so how will this work with even a small family of like four people? I guess they get a Model 3 or Model Y?

Alive_Werewolf_40 2024-10-11 03:43

Wireless only charging makes this DOA.

fedup-withtrump 2024-10-11 03:44

This just looks like nonsense, what am I missing?

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:45

[deleted]

22marks 2024-10-11 03:45

So, did he imply all current (at least HW4) cars will go to unsupervised next year? Or do you think that comes with HW5? Unless I missed it, I'm concerned he didn't clarify it. Yes, it will be on every *model*, but with what HW? EDIT: At 1:06:40 he says "The Model 3 and Y, and S and X, that we make today will be capable of full autonomy unsupervised." So, it sounds like HW4 will be capable. HW3 is up in the air. My original read on that was the models would be capable, but when I rewatched it seems to be clear.

RazingsIsNotHomeNow 2024-10-11 03:47

Actual press photos. This isn't complicated. The website doesn't have anything that Elon said on stage and there's not a single press photo of the prototypes. This is beyond lazy from their press team. Do they honestly expect everyone to sit through that awful presentation by Elon?

AlanDrakula 2024-10-11 03:47

Not that I can afford it but.... when roadster?

baldwalrus 2024-10-11 03:47

All the cars can be Robotaxis. 2-seater CyberCab 4-seater Model 3, Model Y or Model S 6- or 7-seater Model Y or Model X 20-seater Robovan These are your Tesla Robotaxi options. There's a size for whatever needs you have.

CryptoBlobbie 2024-10-11 03:47

The robo taxi looks really, cool, I'd like it as a normal, you know me old fashioned and all, with a steering wheel. Design language works MUCH better than the Cyber Dumpster. As for the event, I dunno, just more progress and yet to see if any of it will actually work. I didn't get the bit about pissing on public transport. Even these things would clog up the streets. No announcement of anything interesting to me, like VTG for the regular cars, no new Model Y. Meh.

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-11 03:47

My wife was never going to let me get an Optimus robot, but once she sees that they can bartend, I'm golden!

Tetrylene 2024-10-11 03:47

HW3 now finally confirmed never to get unsupervised fsd Hundreds of thousands of us were sold on it with that as a key feature No one outside of North America with hw3 has even received an fsd update, and probably never will. There will be blood

Cferra 2024-10-11 03:47

The SNL parody of this is going to be amazing

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:48

The Robotaxi seems to be on AI platform 5 and Elon claims it's overspecced so my understanding that every model running Hardware 4 will get fullself driving, unsupervised

ParksNet30 2024-10-11 03:48

All looks very impressive but we need a full spec sheet on the Robocab.

3rdm4n 2024-10-11 03:48

What about the Roadster?

Mundane-Tennis2885 2024-10-11 03:48

He said all models being "made today" so that guarantees hw4 in my eyes anyways

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:49

*crickets*

nipplesaurus 2024-10-11 03:50

Sounded to me like HW5 is what’s required. But Elon also said HW3 would be all that’s needed for FSD. So, who knows, maybe HW6 or 7 will be the minimum.

OkAmbassador8161 2024-10-11 03:50

All model 3 and y "in production today" he said. Big difference.

mundaneDetail 2024-10-11 03:50

This event is a pivot/distraction because they seemingly cant make a model 2 at the promised price point. So they had to make a car that could work off a 30k price tag with cab fares to seem cheap. Based entirely on the promise of unsupervised FSD.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:51

Can’t wait to see these in action in ten years.

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 03:51

I'm excited for the future

d1ckpunch68 2024-10-11 03:51

i mean the model 3 and Y fundamentally don't have the hardware needed for fully autonomous level 4 or 5 driving (radar and lidar). waymo is at level 4, while tesla is at level 2 for reference. so then what, will there be a backup driver in the drivers seat? so an expensive uber?

almosttan 2024-10-11 03:52

He's the worst public speaker in recent memory.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:52

Thought my 3 was going to be a robo-taxi. Thanks Elon, I love my R1T

freshfunk 2024-10-11 03:53

Ah yes. Seeing the posts on X now.

szzzn 2024-10-11 03:53

Doesn’t he have asbergers?

Mundane-Tennis2885 2024-10-11 03:53

That's how I took it too.. Just after I bought a hw3 car eh. Atleast I don't think we'll have unsupervised fsd until 2028 at least and by then I'll be only a few years away from upgrading my car..

Craftbjjr 2024-10-11 03:54

Yes he did he said all vehicles currently produced will be unsupervised capable next year. I am not holding my breath on next year. I have had FSD since it was first launched in beta mode years back and although it has made huge improvements, I can’t imagine it is anywhere close to be unsupervised capable next year.

EljayDude 2024-10-11 03:54

Yeah if it was just a regular car I bet my teenagers would like it. It's cute.

musical_bear 2024-10-11 03:54

It’s ridiculous but if they’re actually marketing it as “fully autonomous” that’s the only way, because no matter how good a car’s autonomy is, it’ll never be able to charge itself on plug chargers. I’m assuming the reason there seems to be no charge port as even an option is then no one would install induction plates if it was optional, but they need a large network of induction plates out in the wild for any chance at autonomy being a thing. I kind of “get it,” but at the same time, that seems like a huge issue for people who’d want to buy one for their homes and don’t have money/space for an induction charger. But then, arguably, the response might be to get a M3/MY if that’s an issue for you.

codex_lake 2024-10-11 03:55

That’s what I was wondering. It seems really silly. Often times Uber rides take 2-4 people. Why not have a 4 seater?

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:56

[deleted]

d1ckpunch68 2024-10-11 03:56

there are actually electric buses that use inductive wireless charging. but i think there are many other factors that make this DOA, like the fact that it won't ever get released lol

DoggyAfuera0 2024-10-11 03:56

Originally he was an awful speaker but then grew to be a somewhat decent presenter. Now with late stage k brain, it was so painful to try and keep up with what he was saying.

scott_steiner_phd 2024-10-11 03:56

lol imagine if they owed you like six free ones like poor Fred.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:57

was that not what we saw tonight?

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:57

He literally said in the presentation that HW5 was beyond what was needed, but they might as well do it for the the computing capacity of the fleet to do other things as well.

McRedditz 2024-10-11 03:57

To my surprise, the lack of organized thoughts to deliver his speech was an eye opening. I am no expert in public speaking nor am I good at story telling, but for someone who has gotten to his position over so many big projects, how was he able to deliver his visions to his shareholders, designers, and engineers to envision without a logical and orderly communication skills? The closing remark was "Let's get the party started"? No thank you closing remarks? A lot of people including myself weren't sure if that was it. He could have shared a bit of his spot light with other team members to help deliver his vision. Nonetheless, Cybercab seems promising, but if they offer the option to buy with steering wheel and a sedan version, while staying similar pricing, it's going to be a hit. Those wheels are what I imagine how future vehicle should look like. On the other hand, Robovan is a meh, as the design doesn't correlate with the Cybercab theme, it looks off and isn't as aesthetic pleasing as the rest of the Tesla vehicles.

engwish 2024-10-11 03:57

How was it confirmed?

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:58

He said that in 2019 too. Before HW3 was a thing.

FormalElements 2024-10-11 03:58

The Roboster? That's the limited edition air taxi equipped with spacex rockets and zero-gravity suits.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 03:58

Seems a little crazy to me that they wouldn't slap a steering wheel/pedals on a separate cyber cab model and make it a cheap 2 seater EV to sell alongside the cab.

CyberaxIzh 2024-10-11 04:02

So basically, a hideous and impractical van and a ridiculously gimmicky Cyber Cab. Both "two years" away, and no hard promises. At the time when Waymo is operating actual real-life robotaxis in SF and is preparing to expand to other cities. This was as dud as it can be. The stock is going to suffer tomorrow.

KieferSutherland 2024-10-11 04:03

It's all projections and hope. None of it is going to come true like he says.

bardob 2024-10-11 04:03

Asperger's?

johnnygobbs1 2024-10-11 04:04

What does my launch edition plaid have? Hw3 or 4? Will that work as a taxi?

Redditmau5 2024-10-11 04:04

Yes

cryptoengineer 2024-10-11 04:05

I'm curious about the trunk. The robotaxis shown had no rear window, nor an obvious seam for a trunk.

No_Supermarket_3683 2024-10-11 04:05

Yes, he is on the spectrum

frownGuy12 2024-10-11 04:05

Also inefficient. Do we really want to pay 2x for electricity for the convenience? Snake charged was a much better concept.

dotexperiment 2024-10-11 04:05

I think OP is referring to Elon saying: > The Model 3 and Y, and S and X, **that we make today** will be capable of full autonomy unsupervised. As a HW3 FSD owner, I do personally believe less and less that these cars will ever see unsupervised FSD. It seems incredibly unlikely that HW5 will be shipping with Cybercab, yet the will-be eight-year-old hardware will support the same functionality just fine.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:06

Announce? Nothing was announced. Just some POC.

laserdicks 2024-10-11 04:07

It's the same every time.

arloun 2024-10-11 04:08

They could retro-fit lots of superchargers with plates, not ideal, but considering they often have to cut up some of the parking lots they install in its not impossible to think they may do that.

Brick_Waste 2024-10-11 04:08

Waymo is geofenced and relies heavily on maps. No one has made autonomous vehicles that aren't heavily reliant on maps and are geofenced yet, so we don't have a formula for what does and doesn't work. If anything, tesla is showing that radar / lidar isn't a necessity

allaboutandroids 2024-10-11 04:08

Here's a render of it: https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/1844583051449467202?s=19 Not too sure if someone captured a live image or video of the trunk opening/closing

Alive_Werewolf_40 2024-10-11 04:09

I imagine they'd upgrade everyone to hw4 instead of paying millions in lawsuits and getting a ton of bad rep.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:12

Give him a break he’s part-time.

Economy-Fee5830 2024-10-11 04:12

Do *you* have radar and lidar?

willlusk 2024-10-11 04:13

So was that the end of the event? Where do you click to pre order anything?!? The music is still playing in the live stream... Wtf is happening?!?

chfp 2024-10-11 04:14

Anyone else notice that the Cybercab doesn't have sideview mirrors?

Paul721 2024-10-11 04:14

Thank people? Not sure he has ever thanked anyone in his whole life.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:14

Because then no one will buy the cab, “I’ll let others beta test it” is exactly what I’m thinking

watergoesdownhill 2024-10-11 04:15

There’s a whole chapter on this in Walter Isaacson’s book. Since four years ago, there’s been pressure to sell a super-economical small car, but Elon always resisted it and wanted it to be a robo-taxi. This is the fruition of that.

vagaliki 2024-10-11 04:15

Oh that's why the back looks like that (it's the size of a Corolla)

OrangeVoxel 2024-10-11 04:15

He’s always been that way. I’m reading his biography currently. He has Asperger’s and also loves drama. Around the time of these events he often creates some drama in his life and can’t focus on his speeches

vagaliki 2024-10-11 04:15

How many seats?

vagaliki 2024-10-11 04:17

Wait I like the way the van looks

justinlindh 2024-10-11 04:17

No, it won't. Because it would literally be unable to navigate in inclement weather. If rain, snow, or fog gets on the cameras it has no hardware to "blink". There's dozens of other reasons, too, but honestly without them even trying to explain this simple issue it's not even worth listing them.

ken830 2024-10-11 04:17

It's shocking how so many people in this subreddit apparently have never heard Elon speak.

Urbantreefrog 2024-10-11 04:19

Bruh late stage k brain lol im done

vagaliki 2024-10-11 04:19

California electricity is already 4x the rest of the country lol

Rav4Primer 2024-10-11 04:19

Don't sell yourself short. If you'd invested that same $10k in the S&P 500 back in 2021 it would be worth $15k today.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:21

jinxjy 2024-10-11 04:22

What blood? The same promises were made and failed prior to HW3 and yet they keep selling more.

It will have spacex rockets that’s for sure

shibiwan 2024-10-11 04:24

Noooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:24

And they expected it to start on time! They're so young, so naive. They remind me of 2018 me

Miami_da_U 2024-10-11 04:25

I don't think you know what confirmed means.

22marks 2024-10-11 04:25

With the FSD transfer, I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded one of the first Model 3s to the new Highland. It's superior in every meaningful way. I'm thoroughly impressed.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:26

I hope they'll eventually think about a 50 person van too. If it actually works this is how much city buses should be

V8-Turbo-Hybrid 2024-10-11 04:26

It even doesn't have rear window.

McRedditz 2024-10-11 04:26

It's also shocking how so many people are supporting him blindly and allowing him to do whatever he wants and speaks whatever he wants as a public figure. PS: I get downvoted for speaking my mind, yet it's okay if he speaks his mind. You see the problem?

_Captain_Amazing_ 2024-10-11 04:28

Folks - vision only fully automated driving is a pipe dream at the moment - and nothing is pointing to a breakthrough any time soon. Until they even apply for the permits for public testing of a vision only system, it remains a pipe dream no matter how many times Elon says it’s just around the corner.

arithmetike 2024-10-11 04:28

Did Tesla show off some snake like automatic EVSE at one point? I think that would have been an easier approach and it would have probably been Supercharging capable.

Rav4Primer 2024-10-11 04:31

FYI in addition to SF, Waymo is already operating robotaxi services in parts of Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin.

nevets85 2024-10-11 04:33

Agreed

hoang51 2024-10-11 04:33

Why cry? If I recall correctly, if you want to use FSD, you'd be upgraded to HW3 in the included FSD cost, assuming this is Model 3.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 04:33

[deleted]

CaliSummerDream 2024-10-11 04:34

They need to do it because in a couple of years no supplier will be producing HW4 components. Technologies age fast.

Historical-Bug-7536 2024-10-11 04:34

He said that in 2016 too. Yet I paid $1000 to get HW3 in my 2018. Remember “3 months maybe, 6 months definitely” ??

musical_bear 2024-10-11 04:35

They did, but I don’t think they ever showed it again after that, whenever that was, and that was a long time ago now. I actually think induction makes a ton of sense _except_ that it requires new infrastructure. But the “snake” plug has the exact same problem, and seems way, way more complicated. A plate requires no robotics, no moving parts. Way easier to maintain, way cheaper to build and install, I’d think.

Brave_Nerve_6871 2024-10-11 04:38

I think I've heard that one before. They are now officially at Level 2, good luck making it to Level 5 (that some experts are saying may never be attainable in real life) in a reasonable time.

spillingbeansagain 2024-10-11 04:39

Elon and his promises!

anon__a__mouse__ 2024-10-11 04:40

That whole presentation was coordinated but someone that was autistic. I couldn’t follow anything that was happening and then they had 2 different types of music playing over each other and I was done.

bartturner 2024-10-11 04:40

Not missing a thing. It was nonsense. The talking points were talking points that Google gave a decade ago.

bartturner 2024-10-11 04:41

With Atlanta next.

arithmetike 2024-10-11 04:42

The problem is induction isn't as efficient as an actual wire, and it will never be as efficient. If the cars are truly self driving, then they can align themselves to make it easier for the automated plug to work. The cars would need to align anyway to make the induction charging work anyways.

EnjoyMyDownvote 2024-10-11 04:42

Will that increase the price of FSD I wonder? 🤔

kennyveltre 2024-10-11 04:44

so, where's the new roadster?

sozmateimlate 2024-10-11 04:44

God damn it all looks so futuristic

FlatAd768 2024-10-11 04:57

so, the car can pick me up(unsupervised) to the airport and back home?

senatortruth 2024-10-11 04:58

It's because it looks cooler. Don't worry it'll have a steering wheel and pedals when its actually launched cause there's no way this passes regulations without them.

Darekbarquero 2024-10-11 05:01

I know it’s never gonna be the same but with electric buses and trucks, they can do like 4-500 kw inductively

TimTom8321 2024-10-11 05:02

It seems to me, that the bigger takeaway here rather than "next year" is "we didn't abandon the thought of having FSD unsupervised". There was a big talk a week or two ago, when Tesla changed some stuff on their site in the FSD sections and people thought that maybe Tesla makes up the stage for not going beyond FSD supervised.

silverf1re 2024-10-11 05:07

If Unsupervised becomes a thing, Tesla will benefit from it for sure.

flying-auk 2024-10-11 05:10

He claimed to have Asperger's then later said it wasn't the case. He'll probably switch again if he thinks there's some benefit to the claim.

Paul721 2024-10-11 05:11

Yes for years, and they do not have permission for a retail car option. There’s no way Tesla can offer unsupervised FSD in consumer purchased car in the next year, as they haven’t had permission to trial it anywhere yet.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:11

Honestly I don't think induction home chargers will be notably more expensive to install vs a current L2 charger. The copper that's currently in the length of the cable (20ft approximately) would essentially be used in the coil instead. Only expensive part may be needing an electrician to install a shielded cable run across the garage floor to the unit. Maybe 20% extra for the unit and 30-40% for install? But we're not talking thousands.

FlyingSolo57 2024-10-11 05:13

I'd like to see the cybercab pull into a parking spot and open those doors. Maybe there's room if the cab itself is narrow.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:13

Induction chargers would be installed on top of the asphalt. Whether they wanted/needed to trench for the run depends on local code but my understanding is that the induction pad will be raised and sit only 3-4 inches from the bottom of the vehicle.

Separate-Forever4845 2024-10-11 05:14

It is always next year…

rabbitwonker 2024-10-11 05:14

Also said HW5 in the cabs is overpowered

SamEdwards1959 2024-10-11 05:16

He’s been saying next year for 10 years!

TianZiGaming 2024-10-11 05:17

He mentioned they will all be unsupervised capable, but followed up with 'with permission, wherever regulators approve it in the US'. I think that would be by far the bigger hurdle. Currently the only cars with approval for unsupervised in both the US and China are using lidar systems. It's really anyone's guess when he gets approval on a non-lidar system. His reasons for being stuck in 2020 were also due to 'regulations'. Even if he meets his timeline, which it seems he never does, it's years behind other companies that already have unsupervised cars on the road.

Ged_UK 2024-10-11 05:18

'Capable' is doing a lot of work in what he said.

22marks 2024-10-11 05:18

In theory. We don't know exactly what "unsupervised" means. That's a Tesla marketing term as opposed to saying "Level 4" or "Level 5." My guess it we're years away (5+) from being able to sleep. In the shorter term, I think we'll see closer to Level 3 to Level 4, like it can take you to the airport and back home, but you still need to be there just in case.

Stokesy7 2024-10-11 05:19

I'd buy a drivable version of this in a heart beat. I've never liked how big my Model 3 is.

Sesquatchhegyi 2024-10-11 05:20

The efficiency loss is only 10-15%. Compare this to the cost of robot cable OR human labour, maintenance, etc.

22marks 2024-10-11 05:20

Was that were he said something like "Let's not get into the details"? That leads me to think HW3 won't be supported, especially since they announced they'll continue to transfer FSD to a new car with HW4 for free.

stinkybumbum 2024-10-11 05:23

I’m sure we heard this years ago……next year etc etc

PtrDan 2024-10-11 05:24

I wonder what it would take for Elon and Tesla to face consequences for all these forward looking statements that they know are complete bullshit.

drowsy_coffee 2024-10-11 05:29

It will be made by Porsche.

CycleOfLove 2024-10-11 05:35

I might buy the van: imagine a bed, tiny washroom, kitchenette, and a TV. There are quite a bit of options for the Tesla Van. Voila your mini camper!

BoopetySchmoople 2024-10-11 05:37

Such a bland presentation? "Hey remember how wr said they'll be able to drive themselves? Yep, they will be able to indeed. When? Can't tell you. Hw3 vs hw4? Can't tell you. And it's usa only. When will it be outside the USA? Can't tell you"

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:39

I’m not sure if you’re into technology/programming but it’s entirely different hard coding a robot to dance and using deep learning to teach a robot to anything then tell it to dance.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:40

Yeah right.

Huckdog720027 2024-10-11 05:40

Hasn't he been saying "next year" since something like 2016?

Aphelion 2024-10-11 05:43

You mean in testing phase?

Paul721 2024-10-11 05:45

I mean it is totally illegal but unfortunately not really an enforced part of our commerce laws. It’s also just really hard to enforce. Look at all these companies pushing up there stock prices based on bullshit AI claims. Prior to that machine learning, prior to that cloud computing. There’s a lot of companies spinning BS but it really sucks IMHO as I have always loved Tesla.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:46

Take some other interesting projects in consideration: The human genome project costed 3 billion and started in 1990. First successful sequence in June 2000, first full draft in feb 2001, finalization in 2003 2 years before deadline.  Could be the same story for autonomous driving, but then again it’s Musk haha.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Genome_Project

Also in the book, the design team consistently has designed versions with conventional controls in tandem. Franz is keeping Elon happy and keeping the company a bit more grounded.

What if it rains and the cameras get wet? Or if it snows and they get covered? Or if mud spills onto it? This whole thing is make believe, always was. It’s marketing.

ChapGod 2024-10-11 05:50

No steering wheel or pedals. Tesla has lost the plot. I know I'll get downvoted, but this was insanely underwhelming.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 05:50

Because it’s only concept, with the only goal to land the demo. There’s no way it’s been designed keeping in mind the needs of actual users and cities. People with kids can’t use it. Old people can’t get in. Etc.

sowaffled 2024-10-11 05:53

I had to scroll forever to see a gdam positive comment and this is still the only positive one I see lol. These types of designs and concepts aren’t coming from anyone but Tesla. So sad how obsessively negative people are to prevent themselves from feeling even a tad bit of joy and excitement for new and different things.

JebryathHS 2024-10-11 06:04

>His reasons for being stuck in 2020 were also due to 'regulations'. Which is funny because regulations in this case is code for "major safety issues that make regulatory approval impossible". I think that driver assistance features are fantastic and have a lot of potential to hugely improve traffic safety by letting us move away from second to second micromanagement and more into watching what's going on around us. But this constant implication that it's ready and safe already is getting annoying. We know it's not, Elon! Just say you're working on it.

Terron1965 2024-10-11 06:12

Without drivers it could be more efficient to have smaller vehicles. Less loading/unloading time and more frequent stops

Socile 2024-10-11 06:13

But at Chuck E Cheese, they weren’t bipedal, self-contained humanoids. They didn’t have fingers capable of grasping things. This comparison is so ridiculous.

I bet with you that all the cars that were driving there were controlled remotely. The little black info screen at the beginning with the legal notice makes it also very likely imo.

SuperMazziveH3r0 2024-10-11 06:20

Why would anyone pay 30k to buy a (not)car that you can’t even drive? If it can be operated profitably why is Tesla even selling it? Why not eat the whole market? Unless it can’t be profitable and they want gullible people with extra cash to subsidize the cab fees and FSD development costs.

sozmateimlate 2024-10-11 06:24

Mate, 100%! It gave me Apple 2007 vibes. You see things here that made me excited to see IRL. But tbh, it’s more of a Reddit thing. I just showed it to my coworkers, and everyone thinks it’s pretty neat. Unfortunately, Reddit has become radicalised :(

Even if Tesla is ready to roll out Unsupervised FSD to all vehicles with HW4 next year, I doubt very much that regulatory clearance will be ready for it as well. Apart from a few test areas or, with luck, a few states in the US, we are still years away from wider availability. Supervised FSD is still not available in most countries where you can buy a Tesla, and depending on the approval process, it may never come.

IAmAnAnonymousCoward 2024-10-11 07:16

Can't believe I woke up at 4 am for this 🤣

SkynetUser1 2024-10-11 07:16

That's one of Tesla's core problems. If the CEO of a company goes on stage and tells people something is going to happen, you should be able to trust them. For me, this whole thing was just a concept show. Nothing can be trusted to actually happen.

hawktron 2024-10-11 07:20

It was always going to be about their autonomous taxi. Why would you expect controls?

yootani 2024-10-11 07:22

My guess is that Uber rides have on average 1.2 passenger. So with a 2 seater you cover 95% of the market.

hawktron 2024-10-11 07:22

The doors and aperture are massive. They couldn’t do that with conventional doors. It’s good for entry / exit to have big opening.

CandidGround2248 2024-10-11 07:29

What if a passenger does not close a door after exiting? What if the camera's are obscured by fog, rain, mud or snow? How can that ever work with existing hardware?

brillebarda 2024-10-11 07:30

May I introduce you to the pantograph. Build a charging garage where it comes from top down and the problem is solved. Elon, that will be 20 dollars please.

GreyGreenBrownOakova 2024-10-11 07:39

depends on the price. A lot of savings can be made if they lower the Cybercab's performance, interior quality, sound system and battery. Tesla could make it a loss leader to get rideshare revenue from it.

XmasNavidad 2024-10-11 07:41

Didn't he say that back in like 2016 too?

XmasNavidad 2024-10-11 07:44

TooMuchTaurine 2024-10-11 07:53

They have the data, a very high percentage of uber rides are only 1 or 2 people... (Well into the 90's)

softcore_robot 2024-10-11 07:54

My theory is that if moving the planet to autonomy is the goal, why make more traditional cars? Even if you could make billions from one. If this is the real goal, Tesla will discontinue each model like Apple did to the iPod. If they solve FSD. Tesla will move to Optimus and energy as their main business with CyberCab fleets being a cash cow. Maybe the cabs will come in new shapes, but they are banking on new generations not wanting to drive at all. That’s already kinda happening depending on where you live.

TechSupportTime 2024-10-11 07:55

Meh, I'd be willing to bet that they are actually driving autonomously. There was news earlier that they were mapping out the warner bros lot, so it's likely that it's a fork of FSD on pre programmed guiderails. That being said it says nothing about its' viability on real roads or as a product.

_Torks_ 2024-10-11 07:58

TechSupportTime 2024-10-11 08:17

I think the pitch is to sell it to people who want to reclaim more time in the car while they go someplace. That's a big IF they can make it function as advertised. I also wonder if the sub 30k price point comes with asterisks that you make it available on their ride hailing service, or if they provide incentives for you to put it on their service. My guess on why they're selling it is so they're not asset heavy. Running a cab service comes with costs like cleaning crew, maintenance, warehouse/ charging infrastructure etc. If you sell them, you can offload ALL of that to the owner plus the actual cost of the vehicle itself, plus make a percentage on each ride they serve. Guaranteed that these are going to be exclusive to Tesla's rideshare, so on paper I can see it make sense to their accountants.

You'll need humans to clean the cars anyway. They don't intend for this to be real. If they did it would charge normally(and faster) and have regular doors with a steering wheel.  Of course they might plan on making a more reasonable model later...I guess.

I'm seeing way more Teslas with anti-Elon stickers which tells me that people are not pleased. people buy cars with whom they identify with and Elon has lost the cool factor. I thought the whole robotaxi idea was that your very own Tesla could eventually just go off and drive itself picking someone up that needs a ride. Is that an entire idea dead?

baldwalrus 2024-10-11 11:00

There's a few things at play here. First, a two seater with decent range probably wouldn't be that much cheaper than a model 3, which with incentives can be had for less than $30k. Second, the market for 2-seater cars isn't that big. That's why very few manufacturers make them. And finally, Musk is now assuming that by the time you get the 2-seater to mass market autonomy will be fully solved (2027?). Now you're bringing a product to market with a smaller TAM, that's not much cheaper than your cheap 4-seater, at a time when many people who want cheap cars will just call Robotaxis. I'm not saying it's right, but I think those are the reasons for ditching the steering wheel and pedals altogether.

HW3 was going to be capable “next year” at some point too. He’s not worth paying any attention to whatsoever. What you can believe: Tesla is working on this. What you shouldn’t believe: anything about the timeline or specific hardware that will be capable. In the stock market there’s this idea if “beat and raise” where you sandbag your own projections so you can beat them and raise them every quarter for the bump. Elon has made a career of “fall short and raise” and more recently, “fall short and re-set the same goal like it’s new again”. And for whatever reason people still listen to him

Because no Tesla is ever going to be capable of driving unsupervised in all weather and geographical areas. If there are no controls in the car, they’d better let you hook a game controller up to it or they will constantly be stranded.

nipplesaurus 2024-10-11 12:01

Elon also said something very similar about the HW3 FSD computer in that it has two chips but they will run in parallel, and if one fails the other could handle everything. Now Tesla is using both chips and it’s still not enough.

bdsee 2024-10-11 12:01

He doesn't have the sensor package, vision only can never be fully autonomous, it could probably be done without LiDAR but would require a bunch of effort in using at least some form of radio frequency sensing package/s....but LiDAR is the easiest so LiDAR will likely remain a requirement for approvals in many places around the world.

Most ppl commute solo

Merker6 2024-10-11 12:14

People that commute via car are almost certainly going to be doing almost everything else with the car too and need the utility of carrying more than two people. There's a reason that 2-doors don't exist on the US market outside of select sports cars

BMWbill 2024-10-11 12:15

This is true. There is definitely a market for a 2 seater robotaxi car in the future. But then you’ll need your regular car for your family and for going out of town where you need to charge at a supercharger. (This thing has no charge port)

ZeroWashu 2024-10-11 12:15

What this tells me is there are no new vehicles coming from Tesla for people to drive. So what is giga mexico going to do if there is not a low cost two or four seat option for people who won't give up a steering wheel? All we can look forward in the traditional format is the refreshed model Y. Apparently Tesla is betting so hard on autonomous driving they are willing to give up all other markets other than those they are already in

MexicanGuey 2024-10-11 12:20

In 2016 he said the same exact thing. “By 2017 all cars made today (hw2.5) will be able to drive coast to coast with no driver needed, pending regulatory approval” Lmao. If you guys believe him again it’s on ya.

Kidd_Funkadelic 2024-10-11 12:20

My take is they will. You get a lot more hype initially with an unusual decision like no steering wheel. That gets them free PR. Then when it comes time to scale up production numbers they add a steering wheel, even if they do solve FSD enough to sell them without. I feel like that was the plan all along when they did the yoke. It got a lot more people talking than if it was just the rest of the S/X refresh without it. Now it's an afterthought that costs an extra grand if I recall because most people never really wanted it.

oasiscat 2024-10-11 12:25

He said he would be surprised if it wasn't out at the end of this year. He has been "surprised" at the end of every year for almost 10 years. Is it even a surprise anymore if it's a surprise every year? I'm convinced Tesla's engineers keep giving him rosy outlooks on timetables to keep him happy or else risk losing their jobs. That's not an effective CEO.

worlds_okayest_skier 2024-10-11 12:26

I think he needed to provide an update, but there wasn’t much here, probably because he’s been too busy owning the libs on X.

New_Substance0420 2024-10-11 12:29

Tesla is in a weird position. Tesla originally gained popularity in part because they were unique luxury cars. A significant portion of their revenue stream was designed around selling expensive luxury cars at a high margin, but with the introduction of lower cost vehicles it ends up cannibalizing the revenue of their higher end vehicles. While more people end up buying cheaper teslas, there is a smaller margin on each car and an associated reduction in sales for high end models. At the same time tesla is losing market share from their luxury vehicles to other luxury EV manufacturers like BMW, Volvo and Mercedes

Birraytequenos 2024-10-11 12:36

I want to be optimus best friend… i want one…

Sethcran 2024-10-11 12:39

I wouldn't say vision only can *never* be fully autonomous, given that humans pretty much do this now. I'm not saying it's anywhere near capable right now, or that it's the right approach given today's technology, or even that with perfect technology there aren't probably still better options, but in theory, vision only can be just as capable as human drivers.

esproductions 2024-10-11 12:39

The way people use cars now is very different compared to how people will use robotaxis. You’re looking at it through the wrong lens. Owning a vehicle means you need to buy one that is big enough for your more niche needs, but in reality, 90% of road use now is commuting for work reasons and that is mostly done alone, one person. If your family of 4 needs to go somewhere, you’d summon 2 robo taxis and it will still be cheaper and more effective of a network.

Ok_Frosting6547 2024-10-11 12:48

Going unsupervised next year is far too optimistic, even if we did have the perfect software for it, the jump from supervised autopilot to unsupervised true self driving is a chasm of legality and safety concerns. I don't see myself trusting my M3 to drive me somewhere safely while I am sleeping with my seat reclined. I like what we saw here, a self-driving robotaxi that could be available to the public for a reasonable price and robots that can cook and shop for you. But we should be realistic about the timing here, this will happen in our lifetime but we still got a ways to go.

CatStretchPics 2024-10-11 12:55

thedirtytroll13 2024-10-11 12:57

We are going to see a lesson about wants vs needs

enzo32ferrari 2024-10-11 13:04

Yeah I was kind of disappointed in the design here. Models S/X/Y/3 have such a nice design language then Cybertruck disrupts that, and now we’re off the rails with this Art Deco car/van

[deleted] 2024-10-11 13:05

It feels a bit like George R.R. Martin's abandoning the "Game of Thrones" books to work on the TV show. Don't get me wrong, I find the Robotaxi's looks very impressive, a blend of Cybertruck and Model 3 that would DEFINITELY work on its own, on a "normal" Tesla. But I think this is fluff to keep investors happy rather than a viable product, especially in Europe, where Tesla is still NOT offering anything beyond EAP. I always advise AGAINST trying to second guess trillion dollar companies, and I am usually right. There MUST be a market for the Robotaxi, just in other parts of the world. And if that contributes to improving everyone's Tesla experience, I am all in. Maybe I'm just butt hurt for Tesla's nickel and diming Premium Connectivity subscribers by removing Spotify. All for the mighty investors.

Snakend 2024-10-11 13:09

3 seats. The center console folds up.

BMWbill 2024-10-11 13:14

Whatever. It’s a concept that is decades ahead of government regulation or insurance. The day Elon says Tesla will assume responsibility for accidents and deaths when these things crash is the day I’ll actually believe these things have a future.

Snakend 2024-10-11 13:17

Waymo is already operating in SF and Los Angeles. They don't have have anything to deal with those things either. The front cameras get cleared with the windshield wipers. The 4 cameras on the side don't get blocked from rain, they are angled down and are covered.

Snakend 2024-10-11 13:17

Waymo is already operating with no drivers. It is here today.

B1Turb0 2024-10-11 13:25

Agreed. Great perspective.

Dstrongest 2024-10-11 13:32

And the price drops by huge margin . 😂

Anxious-Jellyfish226 2024-10-11 13:35

I think they are right to not do a 25k car. At those volumes they need to basically bet the company on an absurd amount of capital to build the volume needed to sustain millions of cars selling at razer thin margins. If there is any hesitation in the market then it could tank the company. People seem to not be aware of I flation either. A 25k car now is a 10k car in 1980.. the compromises need would be astonomical

Huskerzfan 2024-10-11 13:44

Then why can’t you buy out a lease? Do they just want the batteries back?

starshiptraveler 2024-10-11 13:46

I love my yoke. Much better than a wheel in my opinion. I would not buy a car without a means of manually driving it though, no matter how good the software is.

tayl428 2024-10-11 13:50

Exactly what I've been saying for quite a while. People are tired of the same old S, 3, and Y. Even though refreshed, they still are basically the same cars. Many people (and I'd probably argue, most people) have never bought the exact same car twice in a row. While I love the AP on my Y, I really miss all the other basic AND luxury things I gave up to get it. With nothing coming out new, what are people going to do in the near future? Good question.

Reed82 2024-10-11 14:06

It won’t be hard to add since the car is all drive by wire.

OneCyrus 2024-10-11 14:07

well they just didn‘t announce it yet. pretty good way to start pre-production units with this design. so they can hide the actual new model by pretending it is the robotaxi. they announced the new model for H1 2025. so they can‘t hide it for too long until public tests are required.

lee1026 2024-10-11 14:11

Once there is steering by wire, that pivot can come late. Bolt in a Logitech steering wheel if you really have to.

Leungal 2024-10-11 14:11

This argument holds a lot less water now that we've seen what Chinese EV makers have done in the last few years. They've proven that there's a market for cheap EVs all across the world and with practically guaranteed tariffs on Chinese EVs in the US/EU Tesla had a massive first-mover advantage that they've now squandered.

Reed82 2024-10-11 14:13

That’s where I was at the time. Now I can barely stomach him. My fingers are crossed for Tesla, but he can’t be gone from the helm soon enough. He should just let Frans present from now on.

Reed82 2024-10-11 14:14

They don’t need to do it! How can they improve what we just got?

T7RSky 2024-10-11 14:15

Honestly, with the rush redesign that supposedly happened, their lack of steering and pedals, and the shape and front end look of it... It almost looks to me like they got their hands on an Aptera (same 2 seater, sweeping body design, etc), ripped out the steering and motor, then threw their motors and panels on it to make it 4 wheel. Otherwise I can't understand the reason they would go with that design.

I have a hw3 and was fully expecting unsupervised driving from it. This company is just disappointment after disappointment.

albinobluesheep 2024-10-11 14:43

I've admittedly only watched bits and pieces, but the Autonomous robot friends having to walk down an isle way of tesla employees on either side to make sure they didn't walk into the crowd was pretty funny.

shadrap 2024-10-11 14:45

He did one event in recent memory and he appeared on stage with an "Elon whisperer," where Elon would look in the mid distance and and mumble "So... uh... yeah...." and the guy would jump in with, "and we should tell them about the new driving computer!" or something and Elon would get back on track briefly. I wish they had stuck to that format.

DreadChylde 2024-10-11 14:46

There is never going to be unsupervised selfdriving with only cameras. It was always a ridiculous claim and it remains ridiculous.

joblesspirate 2024-10-11 14:48

I am also pretending the cybertruck isn't real.

oldguy3333 2024-10-11 14:49

You do not need a steering wheel or pedals on a drive by wire car. All you need is a controller.

understando 2024-10-11 14:49

Right. I’m so over it. My MYP has matrix lights. Do they work? No. Tesla can’t be bothered to play by the rules to get them approved. Rivian has functioning matrix lights. Just an example

Edg-R 2024-10-11 15:01

So those of us who purchased FSD full price on a HW3 model with the promise of unsupervised FSD...

Edg-R 2024-10-11 15:02

I mean... isn't that what they advertised when we purchased our HW3 models?

ramxquake 2024-10-11 15:02

Then why would anyone buy a Cybercab and not just a Model Y which is far more flexible?

parolang 2024-10-11 15:08

I think the idea is that Robotaxi will replace existing taxi/shuttle fleets. I can see it happening.

parolang 2024-10-11 15:15

>it's years behind other companies that already have unsupervised cars on the road. Are you talking about Waymo or something else? Because Waymo is the only other one I know of and we all know it's limitations.

Craftbjjr 2024-10-11 15:18

Yes and you better buy FSD before they increase the price!!! Don’t pay attention to the fact that they have been actually decreasing the price lately 😂

Liam_M 2024-10-11 15:50

I know right because nothing ever goes wrong in even the best automation systems

basey 2024-10-11 15:51

Useless? The vast majority of Uber rides are solo. When more seats are needed, the model 3/Y will be used. But Robotaxi is meant to be the workhorse.

22marks 2024-10-11 15:55

I'm with you and an early owner of FSD. I had HW 2.5, and 3.0, and now 4.0. Here's the thing. FSD 12.5 on HW4 is really good. *Finally*. Hands-free (supervised, obviously) in almost all situations. Yes, it's *really* late. Previous updates have felt like something gets a little better, and other things break. There was a lot of "I *think* it's getting better." This is the first time it feels like a jump forward. I was undoubtedly losing hope, but this makes it feel tangible. I can do 45-minute drives on a mix of highway and surface streets, around stopped cars, construction zones, unprotected turns, and pedestrians, and it regularly finishes with zero interventions. So, I get the laughing, but I also see what I'm using right now. Do I think it will be unsupervised next year? No. It'll be late again. And might even need HW5. But for the first time, it feels less like a scam and more like being overly optimistic.

22marks 2024-10-11 16:01

If you got a new Model S/X after March 2023, you probably have HW4. A Model Y after late May 2023 for American-made is HW4. Model 3 Highland (2024) comes with HW4, but if you’ve got a Model 3 from 2017-2023, you’ll be on HW3. Technically, very early Model 3s were on HW2.5 and can be updated. If you owned FSD, they updated to HW3 for free. You can look at the cameras to check. On the front camera cluster, HW4 has two active cameras and one black covered one. HW3 has three cameras. The lenses are also more red on HW4.

All those awkward, silent "pause for applause" moments, like when Hanz introduced him. "Who better than Elon to explain it?" Audience murmuring 'you? Anyone?'. Invite a bunch of investors and this is what you get. I'm not partying while you light my money on fire, dude.

haight6716 2024-10-11 16:12

baggedBoneParcel 2024-10-11 16:36

I don't understand how there's not some kind of possibility of a lawsuit from shareholders or car buyers who have been repeatedly misinformed by Tesla on the availability of unsupervised FSD since 2016. It's always a year or two away...

AlwaysStayHumble 2024-10-11 16:37

If they make it narrower it’s a win for me. Model 3 is 1,93m wide mirrors folded which is too much for many narrow streets and garages across Europe. Should be around 1,80. Which isn’t that hard, but the mirrors stick out way too much.

Terminator857 2024-10-11 16:38

Some states are lenient and may not require authorization. Arizona, Florida, Texas, come to mind.

spinwizard69 2024-10-11 16:39

baloney

BornUnderPunches 2024-10-11 16:42

Agreed, but what Tesla really needs is a smaller Golf-sized Model 2 hatchback. I don’t understand why Elon won’t make that, it would be very popular in the European market.

engelhartt 2024-10-11 16:46

It probably happens before the wheel-less version gets released in 10 years.

justinlindh 2024-10-11 17:09

I think they get warmer than ambient as a byproduct of it having some small amount of energy flowing through it, but maybe I'm wrong. In either case, though, it doesn't solve for rain or fog. It's not uncommon to get "cameras degraded" during these conditions.

Kuriente 2024-10-11 17:19

We know it's capable of wireless charging, but do we know it also has no charge port? I don't remember that from the presentation.

BMWbill 2024-10-11 17:22

According to several people there who checked out the car and asked the Tesla team, there is no charge port.

BMWbill 2024-10-11 17:33

I did not choose my words carefully and apologize. This prototype robotaxi could indeed be very useful one day, as a taxi and uber replacement. But it’s only meant to replace a small segment of people who own cars. It’s an uber replacement, not a private car replacement. So Tesla still needs to make regular cars for many many years to come. I’d guess decades. And if that is the case, why aren’t they going full steam ahead to build the $25,000 EV car before someone else does? That car will dominate the world in numbers far greater than the model Y which is already the #1 car sold in the world. Why? Because Elon doesn’t want a steering wheel in his new cars. He needs to leave. Or he needs to go back to the way he used to be.

Kuriente 2024-10-11 17:34

Interesting. If that's really their plan with it, I would imagine we'll eventually see that charging interface at supercharger stations. Maybe that's a long-term replacement for the current system? Who knows.

Synthiandrakon 2024-10-11 17:37

I mean also a 2 seater taxi is an absurd concept in general

DoomBot5 2024-10-11 17:43

I imagine they will add the charge port when they add the steering wheel

radiationshield 2024-10-11 17:54

the real fun is if it does come about the same types of investment groups from Wall Street that buy homes to rent will buy fleets of robotaxis which will mean private owners will be priced out of autonomous market. they just won't be able to compete. this will be the clear indication if it works when investment money buys them

81Winfield 2024-10-11 21:17

On my commute to work every morning, 95% of the vehicles have a single occupant.

[deleted] 2024-10-11 21:40

Less priced out and more like outcompeted. Good luck competing with Uber with your little 10 car fleet of taxis. They'll be superior in every way and you'll pick up the crumbs, if there are any. I can't believe he's trying to sell this as some sort of small business idea.

TBJ12 2024-10-11 23:09

BMW I3 1,78. Renault 5 1,77. Honda e 1,75. New Mini 1,74. Peugeot e208 1,75. Smart Fortwo 1,66. Fiat 500e 1,68…

Even subway trains travelling in tubes with nothing to see have big windows. Because otherwise it's just terrifying. Best comment I've seen is: "Looks like a prop from Total Recall, which — ironically — is also what is going to happen".

There has been a recent lawsuit about the claim that Tesla mislead investors about FSD. A judge threw out the lawsuit and Tesla won [https://www.theregister.com/2024/10/02/tesla\_defeats\_shareholders\_lawsuit/](https://www.theregister.com/2024/10/02/tesla_defeats_shareholders_lawsuit/)

So it basically hinges upon whether Tesla is intentionally lying or knows it is lying. "fraudulent scheme" "maliciously and deliberately trick investors." But what about people buying FSD/a tesla vehicle because they were told their car would support it in 2016 etc? Or for investors at what point does it become malfeasance/negligence to such a degree that some compensation is required? I guess if you keep hearing the same story over 10 years and never seeing a delivery, you're a fool for investing more?
