Now this is a law enforcement vehicle that can handle stuff.

averagecrazyliberal 2024-10-09 11:23

Woah, who knew the standard Ford Interceptors are $116k?!

footbag 2024-10-09 12:51

Except they don't plan to actually use it for anything more intense than community outreach.

Electrical_Quality_6 2024-10-09 12:55

It’s a start and a precedent for other agencies to follow suit.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-10-09 13:10

"police duty" > The vehicle is capable of responding to emergencies, but the department does not plan to use the truck for patrols. The Cybertruck will be used for community outreach and engagement, police officials said, and will principally be driven by DARE officers to schools. Also not sure what's with the vinyl covering parts of the windshield. Just for "stealth fighter" looks I guess?

Namelock 2024-10-09 13:29

Normally with a modified engine, new rims, new & modified lighting, outfit the back seat area with cage, etc etc It all adds up. Plus add on the High Cost of Living into the wages & pricing that makes sense. Even wilder is they just said it cost "more than $150k" for the CT + mods.

Namelock 2024-10-09 13:31

DARE has been on the out and declared as [wholly ineffective](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1448384/) time and time again. It's insane PDs keep dumping money into it for the marketing

footbag 2024-10-09 13:49

I don't think Cybertrucks being used by agencies country wide just for community engagement does that much good. It certainly won't help the CT escape the reputation that it can't do 'truck stuff'.

dsf_oc 2024-10-09 14:14

My kids went through DARE and they do drugs.

titus65 2024-10-09 14:19

it's probably the most able vehicle for actual police duty (chases, tight turns, collision, partial bulletproof, etc.) but hey let's not use it except for meaningless "outreach"

Namelock 2024-10-09 14:36

When I was a kid they had this big outing for my school's 5th graders. Activities included a drunk driving simulator. Take a lap in a golf cart, then do it again with their "$600 drunk goggles". One kid did better with the goggles on 🤣 Hindsight, maybe the kid needed glasses? Still a pretty big demonstration fail if it looks like kids drive better drunk.

shumpitostick 2024-10-09 15:21

Doesn't the police have better things to spend their money on? Is driving luxury vehicles for DARE programs really a good use of tax money?

ersatzcrab 2024-10-09 17:11

They're wasting on waste. Vehicle is absurdly expensive compared to an interceptor, and it being used on a historically ineffective program. Double whammy.

a3ZKdvQnhjDt9jJ 2024-10-09 17:18

that’s after the aftermarket equipment is installed. The SUV itself is about $40k

paulwesterberg 2024-10-09 17:20

I guess it is better than driving a [3mpg armored personnel carrier.](https://www.valleyrecord.com/news/why-the-small-town-of-snoqualmie-has-a-mine-resistant-armored-vehicle/)

Independent-Court-46 2024-10-09 17:30

It says the intercepter was upwards of 110k. Doesn’t seem that much more expensive per the article, especially as a non recurring purchase.

Dragunspecter 2024-10-09 17:55

It would be far more expensive to uplift it for police duty than a Ford fleet vehicle

Similar_Nebula_9414 2024-10-09 18:12

Why not use it for patrols

ersatzcrab 2024-10-09 18:20

Ya got me there

ersatzcrab 2024-10-09 18:22

Eh, I'm mixed. With the numbers in the article, the Cybertruck outfitted was $34,000. They do anticipate $6,000/yr in gas savings which is $60k over 10 years, but that's more TCO numbers than upfront stuff.

dsf_oc 2024-10-09 18:28

Love to see a PD Cybertruck take down one of our many Model Ys.

horse_medic 2024-10-09 18:46

Lol this thing will be perma-garaged or sold long before they get 10 years out of it, probably as soon as the PR novelty fades.

shumpitostick 2024-10-09 19:13

Replacing a wrong with a wrong doesn't make a right.

Malcompliant 2024-10-09 19:15

Not the first. Dubai got one a few months ago.

dsf_oc 2024-10-09 19:49

First domestically I guess. Thanks for the clarification.

nidanman1 2024-10-09 20:22

It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas.

Hlcptrgod 2024-10-09 21:13

Definitely not for police duty......

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-09 21:21

They're getting extremely creative with their numbers. We bought like 20 Ford Interceptor Explorers last year for K9 units and we definitely didn't spend $116k a piece.

AmateurEarthling 2024-10-09 21:25

Where do you get the tight turns and collision from? It does not have a good turning radius. And it would not be great for collisions. Hard to repair and with fewer crumple zones it will injure officers more often plus the sharp angles are worse for a pedestrian getting hit.

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-09 21:30

It looks like mostly the same equipment they put in that we have in our Interceptors; Havis console, Whelen light package, Motorola radio, etc. The most expensive thing was probably that dumb wrap.

Dragunspecter 2024-10-09 21:38

Economies of scale, they already have kits and procedures to do that. With cybertruck dimensions and 48v system, everything would be 1 of 1 custom.

Merker6 2024-10-09 21:44

Govt contracting is a hell of a financial drug

shayKyarbouti 2024-10-09 21:46

They should remake Robocop with this

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-09 21:54

Like any new model, it's only a 1:1 custom the first time.

averagecrazyliberal 2024-10-09 22:06

What was your pricing? I assume there are options you can choose from?

[deleted] 2024-10-10 00:20

It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark... and we’re wearing sunglasses.

[deleted] 2024-10-10 00:21

All they need is Robocop now

ArtOfWarfare 2024-10-10 01:04

How many Rivians does this police department have? Rivian is literally headquartered in Irvine…

TheKobayashiMoron 2024-10-10 01:10

I wasn't involved in the purchasing but the window stickers were still on the vehicles when I was helping shuffle them around back and forth to the upfitting shop and they were in the upper $40k's. There's no way we were adding $60k-$70k in equipment, even with the K9 enclosures. They must be factoring gas savings for the life of the vehicle.

[deleted] 2024-10-10 05:10

Of course this would be in Irvine lol

Emergency-Scheme6002 2024-10-10 05:42

the difference is that interceptors can actually be used for, y'know, policing. The cybertruck is reasonably fast, but in the end, it is still a truck, and handles like a boat, and the concept of a cybertruck weaving through traffic to chase somebody, even with a proffessional driver, is terrifying. Additionally, the cybertruck has a poor history of taking hits to the front wheel wells, which is the most vulnerable spot when pitting. furthermore, police interceptors or patrol cars have a higher bullet resistence rating then the cybertruck, which is not even a B4 rating. It is a similar price, but with very few benefits.

Emergency-Scheme6002 2024-10-10 05:43

the cybertruck has a lower bullet resistance rating then standard patrol cars and is barely considered "armored" by police standards.

Emergency-Scheme6002 2024-10-10 05:45

The cybertruck has a very bad history of damage to the front wheel well area, which is the most vulnerable place during a PIT maneuver or other similar movements. Also the thought of the cybertruck careening through traffic in a chase is terrifying, considering it is a truck. There is nothing wrong with handling like a boat, it is a large vehicle, but there is a reason that we use interceptors.

Independent-Court-46 2024-10-10 05:54

The car was bought with DARE funding, for the purpose of community outreach though.

Emergency-Scheme6002 2024-10-10 06:15

hasn’t that program been flatlining in effectiveness? Sounds like misuse of money that could be going to useful causes

willzyx01 2024-10-10 11:33

The interceptor can and will be used for several years. This will be a garage queen with no use. Or maybe the police chief will use it as a personal vehicle. Cops have done that before.

DIY_Colorado_Guy 2024-10-10 12:11

I work for the Gov, and they probably did a contract bid since the cost is over $25K and the company that did the fitting overcharged the government on every little piece. Normal products tend to cost the government almost double because companies know how to game the system and extort the government.

dubie4x8 2024-10-10 15:27

I’m all for the CT, but I can see why people are complaining about how much of a waste of money this was for just a “DARE show vehicle”

Burning_Flags 2024-10-10 15:30

What a waste of money for a community

DupeStash 2024-10-10 15:34

The decision to not use it for patrols is definitely questionable. It looks like they spent all of the money to outfit it for that purpose anyway

Substantial_Fly_6458 2024-10-10 20:32

Full disclosure I think the cybertruck is awful regardless. But I think its particular design aesthetic, which is already like a very aggressive, unfriendly, "I want to make sure I do as much damage to you as possible if I accidentally (or purposefully I guess) hit you", overcompensating kind of thing, is even more dystopian in law enforcement. *Especially* as community outreach, which seems like all it will do is reinforce the idea that police are scary stormtroopers. If you saw that thing styled like that in a movie you would 100% assume that that was the bad guy.

[deleted] 2024-10-10 20:39

it's not for police duty it says it's for dare lol

xSwiftVengeancex 2024-10-10 22:37

>Doesn't the police have better things to spend their money on Not in Irvine, which has been the safest large city in the nation for about 15 years in a row now. The police here can get any toy they want, and as long as they continue to keep the city safe, residents are happy.

adhd_asmr 2024-10-11 01:40

Police community outreach is essentially just copaganda. The point of DARE was never to get kids off drugs but instead to convince people that drug law enforcement is a good use of police resources.
