Android auto, screen in portrait mode

Long-White-Man | 2025-11-21 16:25 | 25 views

I would like to turn the screen to portrait mode when I'm using Android Auto. For the built-in navigation this is supported, but when I have Waze opened through AA, it tells me the portrait mode isn't supported. Strange.. because when I use Waze on my phone, it supports portrait and landscape orientation. Other apps are telling me the same, but I'm looking for some override option :) Was anyone able to make it possible tot use it in portrait mode?

Not supported for android auto or CarPlay. Nothing you can do out of the box.

Too bad :( Hopefully google will add some option for that in the future 🤞🏼

Dont think its Google AA, rather BYD implementation of it.

Yeah AA is natively horizontal, so unless BYD forcefully downsizes the display using a software lock which will leave an ugly bar at the bottom of the screen, horizontal nav it is.

What about putting AA in a window at the top with other controls in the space underneath?

I think the problem is with the split screen issues too, think about the unintended side effects when you have car play and a native app below. Eg. Voice assistance, does it activate BYD or Google Assistant; maps, is it good too have 2 map apps running at the same time, especially for car play which can display apple maps and native maps on the HUD and dash. I mean it could be done but it would be slightly confusing in my opinion in terms of UX.
