How to supprise my spouse?

dovi5988 | 2026-03-12 01:11 | 10 views

This is our first Telsa. My wife mentioned that when the Y seven seater came out she wanted it. The day it was available for order I put one in. I should be getting it g-d willing on March 16th. She has no idea that I ordered it. For those that have supprised their spouses, how did you do it? We live in a suburban neighborhood. One idea I had was to get a large bow, call her outside and use sumon to bring it up to the house. Another idea was to park it a block away go on a walk, and casually walk buy it and make a corny joke like "I didn't know they had the new model out" etc. For those that did it how did you do it?

Summon doesnt work on public roads. I just bought it and had it in the driveway.

No ideas from the initial delivery side, but afterwards you can surprise her by changing the nav destination remotely from the app.

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 01:45

I think in the history of buying cars, spouses that spend 50k on a car without telling their spouse tend to regret it.

aim4squirrels 2026-03-12 01:46

Park it at her favorite restaurant. Uber home.  Go have dinner with her, and make sure to walk by it on the way back to the car.   If she doesn't notice it, make mention of it, like "Hey isn't that the new 7 seater Model Y? Weren't you interested in that? Let's go take a quick look at it." Insist she comes over to take a look.  If your phone is set up as a key, it'll start making sounds when you get near it.  You could play that however you want: shocked, confident, risque, whatever.  Jump in and sit down on the passenger side.  If she thinks you're crazy, point to the screen and say "hey, what's that? Look at this!"  Make sure you've named the car *her name’s* car on the infotainment screen.  You can figure out the rest. If you don't want to do that, you could use a key card instead.  You can choose how you present it to her and what to say at that point.  If she has a favorite song that someone has made into a light show, you could trigger that if you think she'd like that.  Just make sure you've tried that feature out before the big reveal so that you know it was loaded correctly, it is set correctly, and that it will go off when you activate it and want it to.

If you live on a public roadway, you can't use Summon. It only works on private property.

IPThereforeIAm 2026-03-12 01:59

Hopefully you all talked about car color and other options. I wouldn’t want to be surprised with a big purchase without having input

silentbutdead1y 2026-03-12 02:49

I would probably wear a bulletproof vest.

whywhatif 2026-03-12 02:53

I'd find a way to creatively tell her before you pay more than the $250 deposit.  There can be a big difference between "I want one" and "I really think we should buy one now."

Summon it onto the driveway 😉

LordFly88 2026-03-12 04:09

First thing that came to my mind 🤣

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 04:12

Yep, almost linked that as well! lol

Fine_Budget2529 2026-03-12 04:26

Why not just take her to pick it up? Let her have the fun of taking delivery. That’s always the most exciting part for me of getting a new car. I wouldn’t want someone doing it for me.

Kahnspiracy 2026-03-12 06:36

He should buy one of [these](https://shop.tesla.com/product/model-y-air-mattress). He's going to need some place to sleep when she kicks him out.

ProofPrinciple4219 2026-03-12 06:56

Park in drive way and leave keys on kitchen table

Logic_Contradict 2026-03-12 07:26

Make sure you have emissions testing on before she sits in it.

word-dragon 2026-03-12 07:31

“I’ve been thinking about this car for months! But I always saw it as red…”

SoloPlayerSama 2026-03-12 07:49

Unfortunate, the 7 seater sucks lol.

Defiant-Opposite-501 2026-03-12 09:03

Make sure you let us know how this went for you.

CopperBlitter 2026-03-12 10:53

Ordinarily, I'd completely agree with you, but this could be a case where they already had a firm agreement to get the car when one was available and she just doesn't know one is available yet. I guess it's also possible that their income is so high that $50K is nothing to them (think people who would regularly take the Concord from NYC just to have breakfast in Paris), but that's a lot less likely.

asdf4fdsa 2026-03-12 11:27

Summon the car and schedule a light show!

Puzzleheaded-Cup-854 2026-03-12 12:34

I bought a 7 sweater y in 2023. The extra room was a waste of money in my mind. There is zero legroom in the last row. I wouldn't put anybody older than 6 years old there

stadce071012 2026-03-12 12:46

Guess we’re just looking over this part: > My wife mentioned that when the Y seven seater came out she wanted it. Seems like pretty clear communication to me. Wife said what she wanted. Husband listened.

SimilarComfortable69 2026-03-12 13:16

Why don't you drive your Tesla and her to the Tesla dealer and say that you have to go pick something up for your car, and then have her participate in picking up her car.? It's not that complicated to surprise someone you have a long-term relationship with

VinceInMT 2026-03-12 13:28

My wife is an accountant and is in charge of our finances (not in control of them) and there is no way I can spend more than $10 without her knowing. And it was her who wanted the Y. She was looking to upgrade from her last car, a ‘99 Suburban that she’d been driving for over 20 years and went through lots of possibilities. Then she decided on the Y and put in the order. Then she told me we were making a trip to Spokane (the nearest Tesla place) to pick it up. So I guess I was the one surprised. In the meantime, my daily driver is an ‘83 Volvo that I’ve been driving since ‘89 and have no plans to upgrade.

Jawnski 2026-03-12 13:33

Just set up to have an electrician installing a charger in the garage and see if she puts it together

hotrod427 2026-03-12 14:04

I want a lot of things. That doesn't mean I'm in a financial spot to purchase those things.

84brian 2026-03-12 14:19

The MYL?

CellistJust6964 2026-03-12 14:40

Did you finance it, or pay cash? Personally, I think it is a terrible idea to 'surprise' someone with such a large purchase. This is how marriages are destroyed.

stc313is 2026-03-12 14:54

Summon doesn't work on main roads. You'd be better off parking it at a store like Walmart, going home, then both of you go on a walmart run, then surprise her with the summon from there.

PracticlySpeaking 2026-03-12 15:04

>it'll start making sounds when you get near it What?

aim4squirrels 2026-03-12 15:19

The HV contacts engage when my phone gets anywhere near my car, and if you stray anywhere near the tailgate, the auto open feature can start beeping. Wouldn't want him to run the surprise before he's ready to reveal it.

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 15:34

Are you married? My wife sends me houses on Zillow every week to look at…  That doesn’t mean I go out and buy a 400k house without telling her, lol.

ajn63 2026-03-12 15:37

Let us know if it goes anything like this. [Tesla gift](https://youtu.be/-RH9KTkIQ_k)

stadce071012 2026-03-12 15:40

Yes I’m married. Guess my wife is a different breed. She doesn’t waste my time saying she wants things we can’t afford. If she mentions it, it’s usually something reasonable and in the budget.

dovi5988 2026-03-12 16:50

I wish. Just the Y.

Delror 2026-03-12 17:15

\>She doesn’t waste my time saying she wants things we can’t afford. Oh brother, what a catch this guy is.

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 17:18

It’s not a matter of affording or not, it’s that couples normally talk before purchasing large items.

stadce071012 2026-03-12 17:30

Who said we don’t? You guys immediately jumped on OP with zero knowledge of his/her finances. You just assume everyone else’s situation is exactly like yours.

AlmostLiveRadio 2026-03-12 17:39

I don’t think I would surprise her with the actual car. Maybe I would surprise her with a printout telling him when the car will be ready.

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 18:05

No, there’s no financial advisor in the country that would recommend buying a 50k car without involving your spouse, unless you’re a multi millionaire. And let’s be honest, people in that tax bracket aren’t buying 7 seater Tesla’s lol

No-Plan2799 2026-03-12 19:28

♥️ This is really sweet you did this! Some of the comments here are surprising - don’t let them ruin this for you guys. I love the idea of a big bow on the car and the summon feature. ♥️

dubie4x8 2026-03-12 20:06

Definitely don’t leave the lot with it without her seeing it. You never know if she’s 100% committed to it and then you’d be out a lot of money. What I suggest is when the deliver day comes, maybe schedule it for a Saturday and be like “hey let’s go look and see if we can test drive a Model Y and see if we like really it”. That’s your excuse to go there and have her see it without her knowing it’s hers. Then you’d can do whatever to surprise her with the car, but the car remains there and you don’t lose out on a shit ton of money if it’s not to her 100% liking!

hwcminh 2026-03-12 22:35

No it doesn't. Third row is plenty of space for kids.

PIRANHASQUIRREL 2026-03-13 00:04

OP I hope you got the white seats.

SoloPlayerSama 2026-03-13 07:11

Tell yourself whatever you want, getting into and out of the 3rd row is absolute garbage, haven't met anyone who was happy with them, and I sure as hell wouldnt be. Yes you can stuff young children or small people there, that doesn't make it good.

hwcminh 2026-03-13 07:27

I'd rather have a third row that I occasionally use to transport two more people than an extra little subtrunk. I appreciate the added functionality.
