Advice

My son has a Model 3 and I want to get a M3P. My wife also wants a Model Y. I’m wondering if a whole household should have EVs. Thanks in advance

Should a whole household have ICE vehicles?

rwhe83 2026-03-04 00:26

Plenty do.

short_bus_genius 2026-03-04 00:26

Yes. We are an all EV house hold. It’s great. With three EVs, figure out your charging solution. It will be a hassle if you have to shuffle car parking to charge your cars.

ThaiTum 2026-03-04 00:27

We did for a long time.

chfp 2026-03-04 00:27

Yes. Not being chained to oil is worth its weight in lithium.

beanpoppa 2026-03-04 00:36

We've got 3 EVs (3, Y, and Bolt) plus a VW GLI for the 5 drivers in our house. The VW mostly just makes the trip back and forth to the high school. Don't trust it for long trips. I also enjoy having it around for the manual transmission. It's not for safety of being an ICE. If you can charge at home, and don't tow long distances, there's no issues having only EVs.

Lobenz 2026-03-04 00:37

I ditched a BMW and my wife ditched her Yukon. We both drive MYPs and couldnt be happier.

reddituser4049 2026-03-04 00:38

Yes. Best vehicles available.

ptronus31 2026-03-04 00:40

Why not? After driving EVs for 9 years now, I don't understand the question.

AJ_Mexico 2026-03-04 00:46

Yes. I have one EV now, but wonder how I would conveniently charge another one. It can be done, but you have to think it through. For instance, I back into the garage, which puts the charge port in a convenient spot. My wife wouldn't want to do that, and depending on where the charge port is on a 2nd EV, it could be pretty inconvenient. Also, you want to make sure you have enough amperage available, or have a plan or hardware to time-share the charging sessions between cars.

ZKoomah 2026-03-04 00:48

My whole household has EVs. It's just me, I'm the whole household.

indiancarebear 2026-03-04 00:59

So what's your question?I don't think you need a supercharger at home...

Usual-Royal4560 2026-03-04 00:59

It's gonna be hard for you to keep charging. I have 3 ev's right now, 2 being teslas and It's hard between at home charging and supercharging

snakefighting 2026-03-04 01:09

Of course, just think it out. Get two charging systems. Best case is on two separate amps/ breakers. On their own circuit. Run one for inside your garage and run one outside. Easy rotation and full charging mode on each vehicle when plugged. My system and no headache. Only stop to charge outside of home when traveling.gl https://preview.redd.it/g3dgmtouhxmg1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=511a4fdcab895ad972b9221cfbdce97d42f36012

sbell360 2026-03-04 01:12

Agreed. I think I may have that figured out

amandaryan1051 2026-03-04 01:13

While technically we still have one gas car, it’s never used, except on rare occasions. We have an X and 3 as our daily drivers.

sbell360 2026-03-04 01:20

Just wanting some advice. We’ve had my sons for almost a year now. The self driving is what pushing me further towards getting one

sbell360 2026-03-04 01:24

I think I have the charging situation figured out. Just got to get the wife on board

sbell360 2026-03-04 01:26

That’s a nice setup you have there!

anothercynic2112 2026-03-04 01:40

Wife and I both have Ys. Zero issues.

No_Chipmunk2833 2026-03-04 01:46

One thing you can do is just rent a gas car for the road trips

_casshern_ 2026-03-04 01:52

Yes! Sure, if there's a catastrophe and you have no power for 3 weeks you'll wish you had an ICE car. But chances are that if that happens there would be a gas shortage too! We have 2 electric cars and never looked back!

fratzba 2026-03-04 01:53

I would consider it, but can’t afford the Tesla semi, and need the ability to tow a large 5th wheel RV. The MY gets the majority of the miles (and smiles) though

oculus42 2026-03-04 01:54

Or use an EV. We did 9400 miles cross country three years ago.

sbell360 2026-03-04 01:55

Should they?

cruisereg 2026-03-04 01:58

Interesting, why two MYP? Why not a MYP and a MYLR for instance? Genuine question.

_casshern_ 2026-03-04 01:58

If you have 2 Tesla wall connectors, they can be on the same line and they will talk to each other to share power when needed. We have 2 Teslas and both will charge at the same time. Technically, you could do the same set up for up to 6 wall connectors, but that entails buying several and the possibility that not all cars will fully charge overnight. https://energylibrary.tesla.com/docs/Public/Charging/WallConnector/Gen3/Install/UniversalWC/en-us/GUID-CAAE8A55-7DE4-4C15-8F7B-B1325D669A7B.html

Usual-Royal4560 2026-03-04 02:00

Yes but my charger is inside the garage. I can't fit more than 1 car rn as it's really cluttered and the cabinets take too much space

Minimum_Contributor 2026-03-04 02:16

Grizzl-duo was my solution

Harry_Twatter_69 2026-03-04 02:19

Where do you live? We have two teslas and I also have a GMC 2500 HD. I think it depends on why you’re doing it. Saving the planet? If you want to save money, the cost of electricity where we live (PG&E area in California) is more than the gas in my wife’s hybrid was costing us. Not by much, but driving either of the Tesla’s isn’t saving us any money. Actually my wife wants to get rid of hers and get a Toyota again. No matter what we will always have at least one vehicle that’s not an EV for when we go out of town.

sbell360 2026-03-04 02:21

I live North Louisiana. EV is definitely cheaper here

Representative-Air82 2026-03-04 02:22

Personally I would have atleast one ice vehicle for roadtrips to national parks where charging is not as guaranteed. Also incase someone needs to borrow my car im more comfortable with them driving an ICE vs my tesla

Lobenz 2026-03-04 02:24

I originally bought the 2023 for my wife. I enjoyed so much that she said I should have it. We considered an S and an X for her but in the end she wanted another Y. After driving the MYLR she felt it was “sluggish” compared to the P lol. The extra mileage wasn’t an issue since we have solar and home charging. Plus the travel driving we do is only SoCal and trips to Vegas with ample charging nearly everywhere.

PossibleYam 2026-03-04 02:24

I find it useful to have one gas/hybrid car for road trips

PossibleYam 2026-03-04 02:36

What kind of wall connector is that?

FunkHavoc 2026-03-04 02:38

Gas cars and road trips are much better bet

NoaLink 2026-03-04 02:41

sure, why not?

goodvibezone 2026-03-04 03:06

Also the head of the household!

6100315 2026-03-04 03:42

Yes. Both our cars are EVs and we've both very happy with it.

Salty-Hat-3994 2026-03-04 05:12

Yes

silverbk65105 2026-03-04 13:46

We are a two Tesla household. Wife still drives a gasser but my son is all in in Tesla.  I am driving his S and he has my Y up at college.  I am considering trading the S for another Y or used X. If they make me an offer that includes transferring lifetime free supercharging I am in. Buy two Tesla wall connectors so they talk to each other. Another pro tip is to put some solar on your roof if possible. My utility has gone rogue and is increasing their prices 2-3 fold lately.

chfp 2026-03-06 06:42

Mount at least one EVSE on the garage door side. That way you can run the cord outside to charge the 3rd EV in the driveway. Either leave the garage door slightly cracked open, or close it on top of the cord. They can withstand the weight no problem (as long as it's not sharp, the bottom of the door should have a rubber cushion)
