The idea is nice of course, but as for complexity perspective from the software point of view, a pin is easy, whereas storing and authenticating biometric data. That also brings more data privacy issues and steps to be taken from Tesla.
That being said, facial recognition hardware is relatively expensive if you go for a proper way, not just a camera flat image.
Then a fingerprint sensor is a cheaper way to go, but still hardware, wiring, potential failure points etc.
Not impossible, and I agree it would be a nice convenient feature, but I also see why not to implement it

A Tesla is already about 90% less likely to be stolen than other cars......so what problem are you seeking to solve??

That’s literally the point of PIN to drive

> But with ease comes some risk
There's not any more risk than someone stealing your keys with a traditional car.

The hypothetical problem of someone stealing your phone who knows where you parked your sweet ride.
Or teenagers trying to joyride in the family car.

How is having to take your phone out of your pocket or purse and unlock it less complex than simply letting the phone unlock the car and getting in and entering a PIN to drive?

>PIN to drive, but this adds a level of complexity
I'm shaking my head in despair if entering a PIN to drive is considered adding complexity.

I dont think they can really do that tbh, however what they maybe could do is require you to use biometrics on your phone to start the car maybe? I dont know.

Someone steals your car key, and they have the same access as with your phone, PIN to drive already adds a second layer of security.

PIN to drive......problem solved. Some folks are always making problems where there either isn't really a problem or for which there is already a simple solution. Here's an interesting search result: "People who consistently look for, create, or dwell on things to worry about are often described as chronic worriers, catastrophizers, or ruminators. Psychologically, this behavior is closely tied to (generalized anxiety disorder (GAD))"

PIN to drive is complex?
Good grief.

The PIN to drive couldn't be simpler, and it adds the protection you seek. It's a last line of defense to a lost phone or card.

I guess that you got it right. Yes, I use PIN to drive. They phone has it too but they have added face recognition for seamless integration. Isn't it all about Tesla. Seamless integration.
Using PIN is annoying. At lease for me. SO this woul be a great feature. Face recognition. At lease pass through the Phone security before opening the car

How many of you are using PIN to drive? I bet not many. I have two Teslas and we have never used it until realizing the risk.

How would talking your phone out and unlocking it be less "complex" than pin to drive. Really glad you don't work on the Tesla App Development Team.

Pin to drive is a hassle. Something like FaceID would be much better

This is pointless .dont need or want my car having to scan biometrics to drive it lol. Pin to drive does same thing . And also what’s the point. Teslas rarely get stolen and you’re talking about someone stealing your phone and then your car? That happens even less if ever at all. No other car does this and they can be Hotwires without a key at all. I can see having the option but I doubt it would get used much

We use it. Like you said, to prevent theft. Face recognition with the low resolution cabin camera is useless, hold up a picture and it won't know it's fake.

I want a fingerprint reader built in the steering wheel so no matter where I grip it, it can authenticate I'm allowed to drive it.
And a side order of fries too. Lol
Kidding aside, I've never used a pin cause I like getting in and driving off. Most of the time it deduces correctly which direction I need to drive and it's already in reverse or drive. I've gotten so used to it that when I have to drive a regular car, I forget to turn it on and turn it off.
I have forgotten my phone in the charging bay a couple of times. I'm glad it now beeps at you as you are leaving.

Lmao punching in a four digit code is more complex than facial recognition?
